This year OzAsia Festival will present 40 major events including five world premiere and 15 Australian premiere performances. With more than 270 professional artists and over 170 programmed activities. There is something for everyone in South Australia to enjoy. Festival Director
HON JACK SNELLING Minister for The Arts
OzAsia Festival is Australia’s leading arts festival for engagement with Asia. Now in its ninth year, the festival is an integral part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s dedicated focus on enhancing AustralianAsian cultural relationships and engaging local Australian-Asian communities.
I am greatly honoured to be the Patron of OzAsia Festival – Australia’s flagship arts festival engaging with Asia. The Festival is a celebration of Asia’s diversity and it plays an important role in facilitating opportunities for South Australians to experience the best arts and culture from across Asia.
As a result of our collaboration and agreement with West Java Province Department of Tourism and Culture, we are delighted to present an Indonesian focus to OzAsia Festival this year. The program features the Australian premiere of five different events from West Java and we look forward to the ongoing development of cultural relationships with Indonesia.
This year’s OzAsia Festival presents an array of contemporary arts from across Asia with a special theme on Indonesia across the opening weekend. Indonesia is our closest neighbour and with the largest ever showcase of Indonesian arts and culture presented in Australia, audiences can celebrate the delights of the Indonesian archipelago here in South Australia.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank everyone involved in this Festival – artists, staff, sponsors, presenting partners, community groups and audiences.

DIVE INTO A NEW WORLD Rhythmic and unnerving, Cry Jailolo is gripping, edge-of-your-seat dance. Renowned choreographer Eko Supriyanto crafts a mesmeric, contemporary re-imagining of an authentic tribal dance from North Maluku. Be transported to the pristine underwater world of Jailolo Bay, where seven men move in percussive waves, crashing on a shore. They plead for the fish to return. They pray for renewal. The natural beauty of this underwater realm is threatened by human-induced destruction of the coral reefs. Cry Jailolo is a hypnotic, sensory journey to another world.

TEATER GARASI Award-winning performance collective Teater Garasi bring the streets of Jakarta to Adelaide. Multiple overlapping narratives, composed from six months of field research, reveal the complexities of living in urban Indonesia and reflect on contemporary life. Directed by Yudi Ahmad Tajudin, The Streets explores encounters between modernity and tradition, negotiations between the cosmopolitan and the countrified, and contests between the elite and the common. A truly visceral experience, The Streets is a critical enquiry into Indonesia’s contemporary urban life. Indonesian with English surtitles.

Legendary choreographer Pina Bausch championed the work of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Shantala Shivalingappa, inviting them to collaborate; and Play is the result. Merging the traditional form of Indian Kuchipudi with contemporary dance, Play intertwines two cultural forms into an astonishingly beautiful aesthetic. A subtle hand gesture reveals hidden meanings. Voices dance. Music and song create an unseen choreography. Play pivots on two intertwined conceits: the role-playing required in theatre and the games people play – in this case, a man and a woman. Games of chess, games of seduction, ploys where male-female energies are pitted, not so much against each other as in winning over the other.

BEYOND IDENTITY
1OO MASKS OF CIREBON
Highly acclaimed visual artist FX Harsono explores themes of displacement, identity and his dual heritage: Chinese and Indonesian. Beyond Identity is an exhibition that unites a number of pivotal pieces from the oeuvre of this important artist. Included are works depicting the erasure of Chinese deaths in mass graves throughout Java, and the artist’s own struggles with his family heritage. FX Harsono has exhibited widely since the 1970s and was recently awarded the 2014 Prince Claus Award. His work is a part of major collections including The National Gallery of Indonesia, Singapore Art Museum and the National Gallery of Australia.
Immerse yourself deep in history as you explore the 100 Masks of Cirebon exhibition. The highly elaborate masks convey a stark beauty and powerful presence. These masks are used in traditional Topeng dance performances and are unique to the historic Indonesian city of Cirebon in West Java. The collection, from Indonesia’s Narada Art Gallery, is a manifestation of the great work of the ancestors. The masks are steeped in mysticism as they transform the dancer into the character they dipict: the older the mask, the more powerful the performance. Look deep into the face of history, as it looks back on you.

WORLD PREMIERE 9 Sep – 4 Oct Artspace Gallery Wed – Sun 11am – 4pm FREE
At the forefront of Indonesia’s contemporary photography movement is MES 56, a collective of artists disseminating ideas through the lens. In a new exhibition specially commissioned for OzAsia Festival, MES 56 draws on the visual rhetoric of post-WWII immigration posters boasting Australia as the future land, with promises of occupation, housing and opportunity. Using this iconic poster artwork as an influence, MES 56 uncover the story of asylum seekers based in Indonesia today. The photographic works visualise their idea of a dreamland, the stories and dreams of the asylum seekers form the narrative, and their portraits form part of the digitally staged vision of arriving safely in Australia. MES 56 boldly use documentary and experimental art to capture the social tension surrounding global migration.

PEOPLE’S PRESENCE
INTER SECTION
PAINTINGS BY HONG TONG
TOK BASUKI
Imagine the population of Australia crammed into one city. That’s Beijing. Chinese-Australian Artist Hong Tong travelled the Beijing subways, observing the people. So many silent faces sharing a moment in time together, crammed in close, riding side-by-side. Yet each face portrays an individual story. Hong Tong delves into the subliminal messages etched on those faces: people’s daily struggles, their triumphs and failures, and the wonder of the world around them. Hong Tong discovers a shared humanity. Come with us on this inspirational journey.
The light in Australia is glaring, the heat punishing. The effect on the land makes it shimmer with a bright intensity. Tok Basuki looks upon the Australian landscape with fresh eyes and interprets it anew. His artworks offer a symbolic view of the rhythmic symmetry of the land. Mirrored forms. Angled reflections. Colour and light are manipulated to visually jolt you away from everyday preoccupations. The works present a contemporary interpretation of the Javanese belief that the power of the natural world is there to guide us if we actively engage with it. These are intense works of symmetrical beauty.

EKO NUGROHO
An intense cultural and temporal journey seen through landscape: Landscape of Longing explores the rich world of internationally recognised Australian-Indonesian artist, Jumaadi. Working across disciplines, Jumaadi works with painting, watercolour, installation, sculpture, poetry, drawing and wayang shadow puppet tradition. Grounded in his Indonesian heritage and informed by his Australian experiences, Jumaadi’s contemplative practice reveals a unique visual language. Jumaadi seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary references that are highly autobiographical, but universally relevant. Landscape of
Acclaimed Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho is known for his sense of playfulness alongside deep reflection and commentary of the socio-political issues of contemporary life in his country. For OzAsia Festival, Nugroho will create a new large-scale outdoor work to hang across the entrance of The Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace. This bold and colourful work will be a beacon signaling the arrival of contemporary Indonesia across the art and cultural institutions on North Terrace. To complement Nugroho's installation, a display of his works from the permanent collection are in Gallery 21.
Longing is a series of recent works that are playful, but at the same time tormenting. Themes of collective memory and universality inhabit internal and external landscapes.

THE LOOK OF SILENCE Wed 30 Sep, 6pm
Denmark/Indonesia/2012/115mins
Denmark/Indonesia/2014/103mins
This inventive Oscar®-nominated documentary sees former Indonesian death-squad leaders invited to re-enact their mass-killings in a movie genre of their choice. What sounds like a sick joke actually results in confessions of enormous and grisly candor, and a picture of endemic and almost accepted corruption. The perpetrators reveal an alarming lack of introspection. The effect is chilling.
The Look of Silence focuses on a family of survivors from the 1965 Indonesian genocide. The youngest son, who is an optometrist, decides to break the suffocating spell of submission and terror by doing something unimaginable: he confronts the men who killed his brother and, while testing their eyesight, asks them to accept responsibility for their actions.

KUROSAWA’S FILM NOIR Akira Kurosawa is arguably the most influential Japanese film director of all time. Famous for his samurai epics such as Throne of Blood and Seven Samurai, Kurosawa directed prolifically across many genres. Double crosses, insults, mystery, intrigue and dirty dealings – this is visceral film noir at its very best. It is also a showcase for the virtuosity of star Toshirô Mifune in the lead role, who gives a restrained performance of barely contained anger.

HIGH AND LOW (M) Wed 23 Sep, 7pm Japan/1963 /143mins
Like a Japanese Macbeth, the characters in High and Low live in a complex world of ideological contradictions, strategic powerplays and moral dilemmas. Providing all the pleasures of a classic crime drama, the filmmaking shines with the assurance of a director absolutely in control of his medium, stretching beyond mere mastery of technique and performance to also offer an insightful multi-layered portrait of social life in 1960’s Japan.
“HUMAN BEINGS SHARE THE SAME COMMON PROBLEMS. A FILM CAN ONLY BE UNDERSTOOD IF IT DEPICTS THESE PROPERLY.” Akira Kurosawa

ANN HUI
– FILM DIRECTOR
A CAREER RETROSPECTIVE “ANN HUI IS ONE OF HONG KONG’S GREATEST DIRECTORS, RENOWNED FOR TACKLING HUMANITARIAN ISSUES WITH FINESSE AND CINEMATIC STYLE.” Time Out, Beijing
Hong Kong Cinema has few successful women directors, but one of the best known and most respected filmmakers to come out of the Hong Kong New Wave is Ann Hui. While occasionally dipping into genre films, Hui is most well-known for her intimate family-based dramas that often deal with the displacement of characters across borders and conflicting values within families. Film writer Lawrence Chua describes her work as ‘cunningly metaphoric’. Last year Hui was named Asian Filmmaker of the Year at the Busan International Film Festival. She said the award would inspire her to further push the boundaries of her craft.

EIGHTEEN SPRINGS (PG) Thurs 1 Oct, 7pm HK/1997/126 mins
Based on the novel by influential Chinese writer Eileen Chang, Eighteen Springs is the story of an ill-fated romance set in Shanghai and Nanjing during the 1930s and 40s. Visually lush, brilliantly layered and using voiceover to great effect, this film has rarely been screened in the West.

A SIMPLE LIFE Mon 28 Sep, 7pm
BOAT PEOPLE (M) Tue 29 Sep, 6pm
HK/2011/118 mins
HK-China/1982/106 mins
A Simple Life gently and lovingly portrays the changing relationship between Roger (played by Andy Lau) and Sister Peach (Deanie Ip), the now retired servant who once worked for Roger's family. A Simple Life garnered 4 awards at the Venice Film Festival, including Best Actress for Deanie Ip.
Boat People is a must see work in Hui's filmography. It looks through the eyes of a Japanese photographer at the plight of displaced Vietnamese after the fall of Saigon, and the enormous difficulties they face. In 2005, a list of the 100 best Chinese films was announced: Boat People was listed 8th.
LOVE IN A FALLEN CITY (PG) Fri 2 Oct, 7pm

THE GOLDEN ERA Sun 4 Oct, 3pm
HK/1984/93 mins
Taiwan/1991/104 mins
HK-China/2014/179 mins
Love in A Fallen City was Hui's first commercial film. Starring Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun Fat and based on Eileen Chang's famous novel, Love in a Fallen City is a tale of love and longing. Not just a romantic saga, this film retains the novel's dark and melancholic tenor, depicting how people's lives are dramatically changed by society and events, in this case WWII.
Through the story of a retired Shanghai teacher whose spoiled and hyperactive American-raised grandson comes to visit, Hui investigates the clash of cultures, the different approaches to Chinese traditions and the generation gap emphasised by Western versus Eastern values.
Winner of Best Film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival 2015, Hui's magnificently mounted biopic of Chinese essayist and novelist Xiao Hong is directed with elegance to give a powerful depiction of China's tumultuous 1930s. Using Xiao's letters, Hui follows her life and career from leaving home in Manchuria at 20, through study, work, revolution and relationships, to her early death at 32. This beautiful and epic film brings to life an accurate portrayal of China while shedding light on a writer who has long been overshadowed by her male counterparts.

China/2013/133mins Director: Jia Zhangke
China/2015/106mins Director: Du Haibin
China/2014/98 mins Director: Xiaofeng Li
Inspired by true-life tales culled from the Chinese social media website Weibo, Jia Zhangke's attention-grabbing epic (which won the Cannes Festival screenplay prize last year) teases together four disparate stories of people driven to violence by the purgatorial pain of their modern existence.
19-year-old Zhao is a flag-waving, slogan-shouting 'patriotic exhibitionist'. His father is a gambling-addicted factory worker, his mother a housewife. They live in a run-down courtyard. Zhao leaves home to go to university where his values are challenged by new western influences. Director Du questions what patriotism is, its growth and dangers in modern China
A charming coming-of-age drama about the complex dynamics of female friendship. Perhaps mirroring the vigorous social upheavals of 1990’s China, the intense friendship between two teenagers falls apart as the girls’ lives are thrown into different paths. Years later, Xiaolu tries to track down her long-lost friend but is confronted with the reality of a country going through great changes.
EAST BY SOUTH EAST (PG) Sun 4 Oct, 7:30pm Australia/2015/70mins
East by South East is a collection of short films looking at contemporary East and South-East Asian cultures by honours student filmmakers at Flinders University. To explore contemporary cultures across Asia, the student filmmakers have placed emphasis on experimentation and risk taking, mixing media modes and styles to explore diverse topics including Vietnamese puppets, Japanese woodblock art, meditation and the flourish of Martial Arts.

The Government of South Australia is a proud supporter of the world-renowned OzAsia Festival, the biggest Australian festival focused on Asian arts and culture.
Government
The OzAsia Festival provides an exciting opportunity for South Australians to experience some of the artistic and cultural wonders of some of our near neighbours. As Asia and Australia continue to grow closer, both culturally and economically, South Australia is already building strong links in the region to realise mutual benefit in trade, investment, tourism, food and wine and enhanced cultural awareness. I released the South Australia-South East Asia Engagement Strategy in March this year, which recognises the opportunity to internationalise our economy through deep and multi-faceted partnerships with our South East Asian neighbours. The Strategy celebrates and aims to build on our historical connections across all spheres of our society including government, business, academia, cultural institutions and the broader community. Arts and culture are seen as key building blocks in pursuing our vision for engagement with the region.
It is therefore very timely that the country of focus for OzAsia 2015 is Indonesia. I am confident that the Festival will play a key role in deepening mutual understanding between the peoples of Australia and Indonesia. I also look forward to seeing the artistic and cultural content from other Asian countries reflecting the rich social tapestry of the region. The Adelaide Festival Centre continues to deliver a diverse programme of quality events and I commend its work in contributing to Adelaide’s vibrancy and enhancing South Australia’s international artistic and cultural reputation. Enjoy this year’s OzAsia Festival.
