There is simply nothing like OzAsia Festival. No other arts festival demonstrates as well as this one the value of artistic exchange and the contribution to positive social, cultural and economic relationships between Australia and Asia. This year’s program is a feast of theatre, dance, music, visual arts, literature, ideas, film, food and community events, with an emphasis on contemporary performance, collaboration and new commissions. In addition, all the Asia-Pacific UNESCO Creative Cities (50 in all) have

excellence in arts and celebrating our culturally rich and diverse society. The Government of South Australia is proud to support OzAsia Festival 2019 and I look forward to three packed weeks of creative energy from around the world.
As Australia’s largest lantern parade, it features more than 40 handmade lanterns, with community performances and a stunning firework display over the Torrens. I congratulate everyone involved in OzAsia Festival 2019, including the thousands of volunteers who help to make this event such a memorable experience for us all.
been invited to Adelaide for their inaugural conference, with OzAsia as the backdrop. Celebrating the stories and culture of India, as well as perspectives on our AsiaPacific region, the Jaipur Literature Festival returns to OzAsia Festival for a second year. Writers and provocateurs from around the world will gather on the Riverbank to share ideas and imagination. Join us at the most happening literary festival in the world.
Welcome to the 2019 edition of OzAsia Festival, Adelaide’s boundarypushing contemporary international arts festival. This year’s program celebrates two generations of artists who have shaped the identity of contemporary arts practice in the 21st century. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, a trailblazing group of artists explored blending styles and genres from their cultural backgrounds and contemporary surroundings. Several of these artists, including Akram Khan, Nitin Sawhney, Fiona Tan, Lee Mingwei and Stan Lai, not only continue to be pioneers in their fields, but also inspire a new cohort of artists like Kuro Tanino, Joyce Ho, Jaha Koo, Abhishek Thapar and Toco Nikaido. So, it’s fitting that the 2019 program weaves in themes of generational exchange, like Stan Lai’s epic masterpiece The Village which follows three families across three generations in Taiwan. Light re-examines the founding stories of Penang and Adelaide by Francis Light and his son William Light. And vinyl cabaret Shik Shak Shok recalls the retro golden years of Lebanon while Beiruit Electro Parade ushers in a daring new electronic scene. Some of the most loved artists from previous OzAsia Festivals return with new works – so if you missed out the first time, make sure to catch Outwitting the Devil by Akram Khan, The Dark Master by Kuro Tanino and the indescribable Miss Revolutionary Idol Berserker. For adventurous audiences, check out the immersive theatre event £¥€$ and put yourself in control of the world banking system. Spend time with three talkative rice cookers in the darkly humorous Cuckoo. Finally, don’t miss the world premiere of Stuck in the Narrowest Path by Japan’s highly acclaimed Contact Gonzo and Adelaide’s Zephyr Quartet – an experience that’s anything but conventional! The producers of Jaipur Literature Festival return with JLF Adelaide, Lucky Dumpling Market is back with even more food stalls and free family activities, and the stunning Moon Lantern Parade will be a delight for all in Elder Park. There is something for everyone this year, so come and enjoy the festivities and celebrate springtime in Adelaide with us, here at OzAsia Festival. Joseph Mitchell Artistic Director

BEYOND SKIN – REVISITED
Nitin Sawhney
Twenty years have passed since multiaward-winning musician and composer Nitin Sawhney released his seminal album, Beyond Skin. Now, to mark its 20th anniversary, he revisits both its beautifully reflective melodies and its still-relevant political statements in this unforgettable live event. Nitin has had a rich and varied career since Beyond Skin’s 1999 release, working across music, film, television, theatre and dance, and collaborating with iconic artists including Paul McCartney, Sting, A.R. Rahman, Anoushka Shankar and Joss Stone. The BritishIndian producer and composer has 8
released 20 albums and scored 60 films, including the recent Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. When an ordinary hiker stumbles into a dark and timeworn restaurant in Osaka, he is surprisingly asked to take over the venue by the misanthropic chef, despite having no prior cooking experience. The young man receives a cordless earphone and whispered instructions on how to make everything from the menu. From that moment on, the strange chef vanishes from sight; yet he sees everything, without being seen. Delicious smells fill the theatre as the young man is instructed to cook for a host of endearing and colourful characters that enter the restaurant and lead us down paths which are both sensual and disturbing, burlesque and demonic. All the while, the audience listens in on the chef’s commands using headphones of their own.

THE VILLAGE
Stan Lai and Performance Workshop in collaboration with Wang Weizhong
An epic theatre event, tracing the lives of three different families across half a century, by the Chinese speaking world’s most revered playwright and director, Stan Lai. The Village is a deeply emotive coming-of-age story; expect to laugh and cry as heart-warming themes of identity, community and belonging are masterfully explored, appealing to the humanity within us all. In the late 1940s, thousands of Communist-defeated Chinese Nationalist Party soldiers fled to safety with their families in makeshift “military 12
dependents’ villages” in Taiwan. Over the next fifty years, what was presumed to be a temporary refugee exile transformed into a permanent communal meltingpot that would vibrantly colour Taiwan’s cultural heritage forever. Drawing from true-life stories in such villages, legendary director Stan Lai has captured poignant experiences and crafted a spellbinding set design and period costumes. Staged over 200 times worldwide, including in China, Singapore and the US, The Village is a masterful and compassionate production that depicts the true, moving history of Taiwan.

LIGHT
Thomas Henning in collaboration with TerryandTheCuz Guns, drugs, love, war, freedom, racism and free market capitalism: Light explores our darkness through a revisionist history of the theft of Penang, the birth of Adelaide, and the rise of the British Empire. In 1786 Francis Light claimed a Malaysian island as British property. Fifty years later his son, William, pitched an unpopular vision for the city of Adelaide. Witness one hundred years of semi-remembered history across four continents, performed by three actors, over two hours, underlaid with a challenge: does how we remember history decide who we believe ourselves to be?
Light is a collaboration between Australian writer/director Thomas Henning (The Black Lung) and radical Malaysian theatre makers TerryandTheCuz, who are known for breaking all the rules of theatre. This world premiere drama depicts the phenomenal story of how the irreversible impact of the actions of two generations of adventurers continue to resonate today. A ‘beeline’ is the shortest route one takes to go back home, which in the case of expats is complicated. Join six expats as they thoughtfully navigate this idea by cooking and sharing typical dishes from their home countries in an intimate dinner party setting. Food and story become movingly intertwined as childhood memories, culture, home and the future are slowly deconstructed. Highly qualified and independent, the experiences of expatriates are not very present in debates on migration. This compelled Indian-born and Amsterdambased theatremaker Abhishek Thapar to explore intentional immigration by bringing personal histories and recipes to the table.
Surpassing the Beeline is Abhishek’s theatrical-culinary experience specifically curated for OzAsia Festival – bringing together three expatriates from Amsterdam with three living in Adelaide – in what promises to be delicious, thoughtprovoking and memorable. Japanese avant-garde rock trio Kukangendai bring their eccentric style and experimental attitude to Adelaide on the final stage of their Australian tour. Known as a math rock band – a disciplined musical form dealing with time and articulation – their live shows dissect and then reconstruct rhythms and phrases using bass, drums and guitar in obscure and captivating ways.
This rare musical experience incorporates ambient textures, hip-hop beats, experimental improvisation and traditional Chinese music. Creating multi-layered music reminiscent of old Hong Kong movies, Mindy Wang on Guzheng (Chinese harp), and Joel Ma on synthesizers, samplers and drum machine, collaborate to create a perfect vibe for a chilled day. KAMRUL HUSSIN
FADE TO BLUE
[MALAYSIA]
[TAIWAN]
Hailing from the village of Banggol Gelang Mas in the north-eastern Malaysian state of Kelantan, an area known for its traditional performing arts and ritual healing, is award-winning classical musician Kamrul Hussin. Hussin explores a new way of colouring the music, combining traditional Malaysian and Western sounds.
East meets West in a lively musical conversation between an unlikely pair of instruments: the traditional four-stringed pipa (lute) and resonator and 12-string guitars. Fade to Blue is a collaborative project between Taipei-based pipa player Chung Yufeng and singer and guitarist, David Chen. Their unconventional repertoire mixes American Delta blues with traditional Chinese music, creating an innovative musical style that proves to be immense fun for both musicians and listeners.

JOYCE HO Still
Trivial, sometimes obscure everyday matters are placed into the absurd by Taipei-based interdisciplinary artist Joyce Ho. Her painting, installation and video works have been internationally exhibited and admired for their striking aesthetics, saturated planes of colour and thought-provoking details. Joyce Ho’s superb vision delineates the intimate yet distant relationship and tension between people and reality. Her creations offer unusual atmospheres and strange situations that are at once uneasy, seductive and playfully humorous.
Her uncanny takes on gender roles, bureaucratic control and cultural conventions are simultaneously enveloping and confronting. As she explores the restrictions, desires and emotions that human beings experience, Joyce Ho’s works open up a space where mistakes, errors and imperfections are allowed not only to exist, but to evolve into unexpected stories. A moody slow-motion pan captures a wild, sadomasochistic bacchanal during the Tang dynasty. Presented without narrative context, the scene plays out like an unsettling fantasy. This emotive video artwork from Taiwan’s Su HuiYu is influenced by the 1985 cult film Tang Chao Chi Li Nan, which translates to the same title as this artwork – The Glamorous Boys of Tang. When Su Hui-Yu became interested in the original 1985 film, he located the original script and discovered several scenes had never been shot or were drastically changed when filmed. Therefore, the artist created this new four channel installation work as a response to the missing and altered scenes, and layered in contemporary reflections around gender, identity and subcultures relevant in Taiwan society today.

TABITA REZAIRE Sorry For Real
What is the function of an apology and who really benefits? What power structures are hidden behind our apologetic age? Sorry for Real is a virtual apology on behalf of the Western world from French Guyanese/Danish artist, Tabita Rezaire. Featuring a video and five large light boxes filled with text message exchanges laced with barbed wire witticisms, the works interrogate the violent deeds of colonial histories and their legacies. Holding space for what still needs to be heard, healed, and accounted for, this cyber exchange 56
unapologetically addresses the politics of ‘reparations’ and the need to decolonise our technologies and reconciliation strategies. This exhibition, brought together by Adelaide artist Daniel Connell, displays the work of 14 emerging and established artists from India and South Australia. This collective came together in 2017 in the City Palace Jaipur, Rajasthan, to investigate the notion of a sister-state.
No god but God: The art of Islam is the Gallery’s first major display of Islamic art to encompass a geographical span extending from Morocco to Australia.
Each of the 42 works, spanning mediums including painting, photography, print, animation, sculpture, video and sound has multiple authors. The collaborative process was driven by the Indian artists and resulted in rich dialogue and ambitious artworks. THE HISTORY BOYS
There are few experiences as unsettling as that of being displaced, be it by the fantastical as in Sheng Keyi’s dystopian novel Death Fugue – a story about a man, and a storm – or by death, when in Wu Ming-Yi’s award-winning novel The Stolen Bicycle, a man searches for his missing father’s bicycle. In Melanie Cheng’s novel Room for a Stranger, a visiting student from Hong Kong moves in with an elderly woman in Melbourne. Or in reaching back into a fabled past, as Paulo Lemos Horta considers in both Aladdin and the Arabian Nights.
Celebrated writer and Festival Co-Director, William Dalrymple returns to Adelaide with a new book, The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company, a timely consideration of trade and power. Also with a new book, How To Be A Dictator, Frank Dikötter considers eight of the despots of the 20th century. Long-time Asia commentator James Crabtree explores India’s recent wealth in his award–winning book The Billionaire Raj. And for the first time, politician-turnedwriter Shashi Tharoor visits with Inglorious Empire, his best-selling exploration of the Indian experience of British colonialism.
THE RHYTHM SECTION Welcome to the performers: the artists who tell their stories on stage. Abhishek Thapar is a master performer whose work explores memories, history and the idea of home. Actress, activist and cancer survivor Manisha Koirala looks back at her long career, and offers a message of hope. As does Usha Uthup, one of India’s most celebrated singers of pop, jazz, film and playback as well as a long-time advocate for love and unity. More controversially, spoken word poet Melizarani T. Selva explores taboos – about women, identity and empowerment.
ON LIVING AND DYING As we age, we begin to wonder how to die. In her hugely anticipated new novel, The Weekend, Charlotte Wood wrestles with death though the story of four old friends. As an oncologist and writer, Ranjana Srivastava explores ways of dying in her most recent book A Better Death, a practical approach to life’s end. Intan Paramaditha explores sex and death in the supernatural stories that make up the collection Apple and Knife. More joyfully, Robert Dessaix offers us a guide to the considered life in The Pleasures of Leisure.

CHINESE CULTURAL EVENTS
Two events hosted by the University of Adelaide celebrating Chinese music and culture.
RENAO STREET A mid-autumn celebration
All over China, public spaces including streets, markets, parks and squares bustle with life, colour and noise. Along the streets, hawkers ply their trade, markets are crowded with shoppers and stalls are piled high with produce. The Chinese word for this is renao (热闹), which literally means ‘hot and noisy’. And that’s exactly the atmosphere of this unique event at the University of Adelaide when the Student Hub Central will be transformed into Renao Street (热闹街) to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Enjoy food, music, activities and all the vitality and excitement of Chinese hubbub in the Hub. HUB CENTRAL, UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE FRI 18 OCT 12 noon DURATION 5 hrs FREE 72
CHINESE MUSIC CONCERT
With a history stretching over thousands of years, Chinese music is one of the world’s oldest and greatest musical traditions. From the restrained, poetic sounds of the guqin played by a solitary scholar, to the raucous music accompanying China’s many festivals, music evokes the essence of Chinese culture in sound. The tradition continues today (accommodating itself to the modern world), with traditional instruments likely to be joined by electric guitars or laptops. Join the Elder Conservatorium Chinese Orchestra, the Chinese School of Music and Art, and guest artists in celebrating the fabulous sounds of Chinese music.
