Presenting her first full OzAsia Festival program in 2021, Artistic Director Annette Shun Wah is our country’s most prominent and respected advocate for Asian Australian artists and their work. I am also looking forward to the Moon Lantern Trail, a reimagining of the ever-popular Moon Lantern Parade, with performances and lanterns along Adelaide’s riverbank. Taste and smell evoke deep memories in this unique culinary and theatrical experience as five stellar storytellercooks reveal the secrets of dishes significant to their lives. Kimchi master Heather Jeong tears into a cabbage recalling meeting her father at the age of nine. Writer Benjamin Law brings a Queensland drawl to his hilarious story about growing up in the shadow of the Big Pineapple. Dancer Raghav Handa’s fluid choreography adds pathos to a personal dilemma about the loss of ritual. Michael Mohammed Ahmad An action-filled, neo-noir investigation into the history of White Australia. In the early 1860s, violence erupted against Chinese miners in the goldfields of Victoria and New South Wales, directly contributing to the NSW Chinese Restriction Act and ultimately the 1901 Immigration Restriction Act – otherwise known as the White Australia Policy. In modern-day Sydney, Chinese Australian street fighter Wei draws two detectives – Arab Australian Jihad and his Aboriginal Muslim partner Matthew/Muhammad – on a road trip to Burrangong; site of the infamous Lambing Flat Riots. Here they must confront the landscape and its demons to ask themselves: does a curse inhabit a land or its people?

HAND TO EARTH Australian Art Orchestra

In a collaboration that spans continents and cultures, the Australian Art Orchestra pushes the boundaries of musical form and plays in the spaces between cultural practices. In Hand To Earth, Yolngu songman Daniel Wilfred, as the keeper of ‘manikay’ (songs) from South East Arnhem Land, brings the voices of his people tracing back over 40,000 years. While Sunny Kim – one of Korea’s most sought-after jazz vocalists – uses her voice and wordless gestures to invoke raw elemental forces. Against a backdrop created by trumpeter/ composer Peter Knight, David Yipininy Wilfred on yidaki and Aviva Endean on clarinet, Sunny and Daniel sing of timeless things – from the stars, to fire, to the cooling rain. Weaving their voices into minimalist soundscapes reminiscent of Brain Eno and Jon Hassell, their interplay and improvisation creates an immediate expression of contemporary Australia. Somewhere, Everywhere, Nowhere bridges the similarities and differences that connect us all. Australian and Japanese cochoreographers and dancers Alison Currie (whose recent work was commissioned by Australian Dance Theatre) and award-winning soloist Yui Kawaguchi join forces to compose a collision between the everyday and imagined possibilities. Using sound, light and form to accentuate the comparing techniques between each dancer, Alison and Yui’s stunning choreography drifts in and out of sync to expose the significant, simple and absurd. AHIMSA MEDITATIONS ON GANDHI During times of social and political unrest, the great Mahatma Gandhi’s example of peaceful protest now seems more important and relevant than ever. Along with thousands of fellow Indians rallying against European rule, his great Salt March of 1930 led directly to the granting of Indian independence and has become a testament to the power of civil disobedience.

Joining Sandy on stage are inspirational artist Sarangan Sriranganathan on sitar and highly esteemed and versatile tabla player Bobby Singh in an innovative pairing with the inventor of the airsticks (or ‘electronic drums’) Alon Ilsar. In this heartfelt tribute celebrating the 150th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, Ahimsa features original pieces from one of Australia’s finest jazz composers Sandy Evans, inspired by the freedom fighter’s writings and philosophy of non-violence. In customary Indian Kathak, the dancer must never touch the drums. The player commands and the dancer must follow. That’s the rule. This interplay lies at the heart of Raghav Handa’s Two: an intergenerational, interdisciplinary bromance between the dynamic contemporary dancer, Raghav, and maestro tabla musician Maharshi Raval. For close to ten years, Raghav and Maharshi have built a friendship defined – and sometimes challenged – by the hierarchy inherent between dancer and musician in traditional Indian Kathak.

First conceptualised by artist Jeffrey Tan for the Singapore International Festival of Arts, this season includes six generous Asian Australian storytellers as they host listeners and share stories of their own lived experience of making Adelaide home. A rare opportunity for a very small audience, Open Homes uses no actors – just real people sharing their terraces, backyards and apartments in this series of fleeting and intimate encounters. THE LONG WALK Sue Healey

Braving hostile ports upholding the Chinese Immigration Act of the 1850s, more than 16,000 Chinese miners sought landfall in South Australia over a century ago to make the 500 kilometre pilgrimage to the goldfields of Victoria. Performing on Robe’s rugged yet beautiful coastline where those miners first docked, The Long Walk pays homage to their tenacity in this unique contemporary dance spectacle. Streaming online via real-time drone recording, boundarypushing choreographer Sue Healey’s new work reveals split-second decision-making between drone pilot, director, musician and performer as isolated dancers Billy Keohavong and Taiga-Kita Leong move spontaneously across the landscape. OzAsia Festival’s exciting new writing and ideas program Welcome to In Other Words, OzAsia Festival’s forum for conversations about Australia’s engagement with Asia, and the largest dedicated showcase for Asian and Asian Australian writers and thinkers. On the banks of the River Torrens, novelists, poets, performers, journalists, historians and playwrights will

As the program comes together, themes have begun to reveal themselves. Below is a glimpse of the writers joining us in 2021. Together they will take audiences from the curious world that is suburbia into a region experiencing radical change. THE TIES THAT BIND The modern family is explored in Michael Mohammed Ahmad’s The Other Half of You as a young Muslim Australian man becomes the first in his family to attend university, and sparks some undesired consequences. In After Story, Larissa Behrendt takes a tour of the relationship between a mother and daughter as they travel England’s literary landscapes. While in poetry, Eileen Chong’s new collection A Thousand Crimson Blooms examines the complex emotions and family histories that inform our identities. COVID CONTINUES The Asia-Pacific has seen some of the worst effects of COVID-19 and enjoyed some of the best public health measures. As the pandemic continues to move through our region, we will look back at the terrible toll the disease has taken. Journalist James Oaten reflects on covering the disease in India while OzAsia Festival artists interrogate the effects of distance, isolation, and loss. We will peer into the future with Satyajit Das as he considers the economic, environmental and social challenges we face in the wake of the virus.

MAKING BABIES In her new novel One Hundred Days, Alice Pung tells the story of a pregnant teenager held hostage by her mother. In her debut memoir, Ruhi Lee negotiates her reluctance to have a daughter, an experience which forces her to reconsider her childhood in Good Indian Daughter. Amani Haydar was five months pregnant when her father killed her mother; her new memoir chronicles that devastating experience in The Mother Wound. DANGER LURKS Fiction is full of women in peril, as in Laura Elizabeth Woollett’s novel The Newcomer, in which a woman waits in a sleepy Pacific Island hotel for her daughter to return. SL Lim’s Stella shortlisted Revenge: Murder in Three Parts tells the story of Yanni, a young girl whose misfortune is to be born female in Malaysia. More whimsically, in Paige Clark’s She is Haunted, a dead woman watches her neighbours, while another leaves her boyfriend because he reminds her of a corpse. THE STRANGERS Yuan Goang-Ming

On weekends or holidays, the Zhongli train station in Taiwan is always filled with migrant workers moving to seek out better economic or living conditions. Screening daily in the Adelaide train station entrance to Dunstan Playhouse, Taiwanese artist Yuan Goang-Ming’s The Strangers is a portrait of these displaced people. Shot using high-speed cameras from the window of a moving passenger car, Yuan captures fleeting yet captivating portraits of these travelers frozen in time.

UNTITLED.SHOWA Mayu Kanamori, Chie Muraoka and Sandy Edwards When visiting a flea market on the outskirts of Daylesford, Victoria in 2015, Japanese Australian artist Mayu Kanamori stumbled upon an intriguing mystery. Inside a pile of bulky envelopes, she discovered a collection of over 300 beautiful handprinted family photographs taken during Japan’s Showa period (1926 through 1989). Who were the people in the photographs? And who did they belong to? An evolving and interactive exhibition aimed at reuniting the photos with their rightful owner, Untitled. Showa is a revealing window into the universality of love, memory and photography. Featuring video archives, music by Satsuki Odamura and a performance video work by Yumi Umiumare, audiences are invited to participate in the search via onsite records and help unravel the mystery of this unfolding contemporary story. A dreamlike exhibition bringing together renowned international visual artists, True Self presents a compelling series of works traversing the divide between truth and fiction in search for the self. Lindy Lee’s episodic shadow prints contemplate the Zen Buddhist koan about a woman named Ch’ien whose body and spirit are separated. Yayoi Kusama’s painting ‘Infinity Net’ wonders where the self begins and ends. And Ai Weiwei’s diaristic twelve screen installation ‘258 Fake’ scrolls through the 7,677 digital photographs questioning the very role of surveillance in the construction of the self. The exhibition True Self inspires musical responses from Zhao Liang, South Australia’s own uniquely accomplished composer with a heart for the community and touch of an artist. Playing works alongside San Ureshi and friends, the performance features exhibited works by Lindy Lee including “Small hearts find each other” and “Going where the river flows” as part of AGSA’s Start at the Gallery event. A VAST EMPORIUM The discovery of sea routes that directly connected Europe to the vast maritime world of Asia enabled the creation of a global trading community. For the first time, Europeans had direct access to a wealth of luxurious commodities such as lustrous Chinese porcelain, vivid Indian textiles, and elegant Japanese lacquer.

With everything from fresh yakitori on the BBQ complemented by Japanese beer for that izakaya feel, to Japanese sweets delicious enough to transport you to the backstreets of Harajuku lined with endless dessert cafes, AnimeGO! is set to ignite your senses this October. The festival features a dedicated arcade area (whilst not a towering Taito Station in Akihabara, it will still give you a taste of some popular pastimes) and lots of anime and manga favourites. Restless Dance Theatre will also present a new work in collaboration with Light Sound Friends, Seoul Street Arts Festival and Dialogue Six Strings that explores how we respond to space. TRUC TRUONG Festival Designer

Examining the influence of the past and its continuing effect on the present lives of diaspora communities, emerging South Australian artist Truc Truong’s work evokes the stories and histories passed down through her family and heritage of Lady Triệu (famed female warrior of the third century).

“Lady Triệu is a symbol of strength and at the forefront of women who fought against oppression. Her legacy has inspired many women, it challenges gender roles, and I felt it was fitting for her to be reimagined in this festival to welcome the new artistic director Annette Shun Wah.“ Truc Truong

Still celebrated in Vietnamese tradition, at age 19 Bà Triệu led over a thousand men and women into battle to resist the rule of the Eastern Wu dynasty. Described as three metres tall wearing a golden tunic, with breasts one metre long and the voice of a tower bell, Bà Triệu’s image was embellished to be larger than life. Part contemporary dance and part digital documentary, 12 Doors is an international collaboration between Korean Australian installation artist Jonathan Kim and choreographer Sunyoung Lee working alongside dancers with disabilities to explore obstacles they have passed through to become independent members of society. Represented as twelve key moments in their lives, or ‘doors’, it is the story of when those doors were found locked and when their families were there to help them through. Featuring Light Sound Friends and 29-Dong Dance Theatre, it is a fearless exploration of the journey to reach the final door. Hosted by the Elder Conservatorium of Music, the sounds of China are set to fill Elder Hall for this special concert event.
