Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival is Australia’s leading contemporary arts festival focusing on Asia and an important event in the Australian festival calendar. On behalf of the Government of South Australia, I congratulate OzAsia Festival on another strong program. The Government proudly continues its longstanding support of OzAsia Festival and recognises its important role in South Australia’s Asian engagement strategy. Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival builds cultural connections and influences not only the way South Australians see Asia but also the perception of South Australia in the Asian region, helping to develop and facilitate the State’s economic links and relationships across Asia.
HON JACK SNELLING MP Minister for the Arts Government of South Australia
For over a decade, OzAsia Festival has brought the very best of Asian arts and culture to South Australia. As Australia’s premier international arts festival focusing on Asia, OzAsia Festival attracted more than 150,000 attendances in 2016 and this year’s festival is set to be just as popular. A particular strength of OzAsia Festival is that it brings professional and community performers together. I am so pleased that this year 400 community artists will join with 350 professional artists to deliver an innovative and engaging festival, which includes a special program of visual and performing art from Singapore. I wish you, your family, and friends a wonderful OzAsia Festival!

“Lean, thrilling and beautiful” The Guardian

Akram Khan started his career as a 13 year old performer in Peter Brook’s famous staging of The Mahabharata. Now established as one of the world’s most important choreographers, Akram returns to this iconic text in his latest production, Until the Lions. In this lean and powerful dance-theatre production, the story of princess Amba is revisited from a female perspective, more relatable to modern audiences. Abducted by the powerful warrior Bheeshma, Amba is rendered unmarriageable. Invoking the power of the Gods, she seeks her revenge against the mighty Bheeshma. Incredible dance and compelling storytelling with a Pan-Asian cast from Indonesia, Taiwan and the Philippines.

COCOON AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA MEETING POINTS: CHINA Composed by Mindy Meng Wang (China) Arranged and orchestrated by Jem Savage (Australia) Mindy Meng Wang is a guzheng (Chinese string instrument) virtuoso and part of a significant movement of Chinese musicians redefining and reinvigorating their musical traditions.
Cocoon will be Mindy Meng Wang’s first major music composition to feature guzheng as part of a chamber orchestra. This concert traces her upbringing in Lanzhou, China (along the famous Silk Road) – beginning with the gentle traditions of the guzheng – to the avant-garde music scene in London, and her arrival in Australia in 2014. Mindy Meng Wang has composed for a chamber formation that includes violin, contra bass, electronics, wind, and percussion. SEOUL MEETS ARNHEM LAND: ECSTATIC VOICE AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA MEETING POINTS: SOUTH KOREA/ARNHEM LAND Featuring Bae Il Dong (South Korea) Daniel Wilfred (Arnhem Land)
A new collaborative concert that brings together two of the world’s most distinctive vocal practices: Yolngu manikay (song) tradition from Arnhem Land, and South Korean p’ansori ‘street opera’, in a world premiere fusion of music. P’ansori involves years of isolated practice in the mountains of South Korea, with dedicated performers singing into waterfalls to develop volume and intensity. Yolgnu manikay is one of the oldest continuously practiced music traditions in the world, and consists of songs passed down through generations from the ancestral beings that originally shaped and named the Yolngu homelands in Arnhem Land. While manikay and p’ansori embody different approaches to voice and sound, they also have much in common: stories, improvisation, focus on extreme refinement of vocal techniques, and hypnotic rhythmic elements, along with a sense of voice that rises from the earth.

HOME Created by GayBird Leung
GayBird Leung is one of Hong Kong’s most exciting artists. Exclusively for Adelaide, Leung has developed a new large-scale artwork that will spread across the Goodman Lawns on North Terrace for audiences to explore. This art installation consists of sculptures representing a literal interpretation of the Chinese character for home (家) – a pig under a roof. As you move through the installation during the day, the sculptures are complimented by playful sounds. At night, the sculptures emit a brilliant white light. This creates a stunning landscape on an iconic Adelaide location, evoking Chinese traditional and contemporary ideas of home and family.

Winner of Best Film at this year’s Asian Film Awards, this is a deeply involving tale of the way power works in contemporary China. I’M NOT ANGRY!
Director Shahram Mokri IRAN | 2013 | 134 mins
Director Reza Dormeshian IRAN | 2014 | 110 mins
Iranian cinema is renowned for its bold formal innovations. Prepare yourself for a 134-minute single take slasher film with no blood. It’s the tale of an encounter between a group of university students who have gathered by a lake for a kite-flying competition and the cooks from a nearby restaurant ostensibly serving human flesh. Inspired by a true story, Fish & Cat has enthralled audiences and critics everywhere.
An intense young Kurdish activist who has been expelled from university is engaged to a former classmate, but after four years he still cannot afford a place for them to live. His doctor suggests he cope by repeating the mantra “I’m not angry.” Set amidst the protests following Iran’s contested presidential elections of 2009, there is no better reflection of the mood of anger and disillusionment of that moment.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY TOO FAR AWAY
WOMEN'S PRISON
Director Mohsen Abdolvahab IRAN | 2010 | 80 mins
Director Ali Mosaffa IRAN | 2005 | 98 mins
This blackly humorous collection contains three Tehran stories. The host of a religious game show is terrified of the embarrassment if his wife reports that he has beaten her. A clergyman who has just moved from the countryside has his wallet and phone stolen. And an elderly couple lead a claustrophobic existence, afraid to even open the door for the television repairman.
An architect gets a disturbing message from an unknown woman who claims to have dialled him at random, telling him she’s planning suicide. This intricate drama stars Leila Hatami who quickly became one of the major actresses in Iranian cinema. On its international debut Mosaffa’s work was hailed as reminiscent of Tarkovsky for its mysterious, disturbing atmosphere.
Set over three turbulent decades of Iranian history, this debut feature from a veteran female producer follows the relationship between a warden and Mitra, a prisoner sentenced for murder. As Mitra mixes with political prisoners, victims of poverty, and even children who have never known any existence other than prison, the film provides a compelling portrait of women’s experience in Iran.

TURNS 20! Named one of Asia’s premier literary festivals, Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) celebrates its historic 20th edition this year. Bringing together more than 250 authors from all over the world, it explores the human condition with the theme, ARAM (அறம்). A Tamil word from the ancient literary text THIRUKKURAL, it exhorts us to ask tough questions regarding conscience and virtues, and envisions an ideal which all people can aspire to – in thought, words and actions. This year, several prominent Australian writers, including Jay Kristoff, A. L. Tait, John Mateer, as well as Cameron and Samantha Bloom, will make their exclusive appearances at SWF. Catch them at one of the world’s few inter-cultural and multi-lingual literary festivals today.
