WELCOME
FROM THE CEO & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Adelaide Festival Centre’s 2017 season, includes a superb array of theatre, dance, music, festivals and exhibitions. Firstly though let us remind you of our 2016 festive season with the popular Christmas Proms concerts and A Very Kransky Christmas. Also in December 2016, explore the lives and songs of Porter & Piaf. In January 2017, ring in the New Year with Dusty the Musical, featuring the return of Amy Lehpamer who charmed Adelaide in The Sound of Music. The multi-award winning and spectacular Matilda the Musical comes to Festival Theatre in May, and you will have the opportunity to purchase Matilda tickets as part of a subscription to our 2017 Season (selected shows only). Do consider buying four shows including Matilda to become a 2017 subscriber. On Stage, a fun two-week intensive arts summer school for children aged 8-16 returns in January. While celebrating its 40th year, Something on Saturday brings quality family programming from April to August. We will also celebrate the 10th birthday of GreenRoom, Adelaide Festival Centre’s arts membership program for 18 to 30 year olds.
Our festivals in 2017 are DreamBIG Children’s Festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and OzAsia Festival. Five shows from Ali McGregor and Eddie Perfect’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival program are on sale now, with much more to come. Group pricing is available on many of our shows, so do get a group together and take advantage of this special ticket pricing! We’re delighted to work with South Australia’s leading performing arts companies, bringing you a range of programming from the Adelaide Festival, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian Dance Theatre, State Theatre Company, and the State Opera of South Australia. REDEVELOPMENT NEWS We are embarking upon an exciting period of renewal and change as redevelopment plans for the Adelaide Riverbank and Adelaide Festival Centre take shape. As part of these upgrades there will be some challenges for us all in 2017, but the result will be a Festival Centre which connects much more effectively with the facilities in the riverbank and the riverfront.
Adelaide Festival Centre’s foyers, food and beverage facilities and amenities will be upgraded to enhance the patron experience.
STAYING INFORMED
Construction will begin in 2016 and continue through 2017, with the Festival Theatre closing for five months from July. Other Adelaide Festival Centre venues, including Dunstan Playhouse, Space Theatre, Artspace Gallery and Her Majesty’s Theatre will all remain open during this period and we are looking forward to a year of great programming with your attendance. Adelaide Festival Centre car park will cease operations from January 2017. We have arranged discounted parking for patrons at Wilson Parking’s North Terrace car park and will provide information on how to access this customer parking with confirmation of your ticket purchase. We acknowledge that the redevelopment will result in some inconveniences but rest assured we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption. The end result will be a world class arts and entertainment precinct for all South Australians and visitors to our state to enjoy.
Our future is very exciting and I look forward to welcoming you to Adelaide Festival Centre in 2017. DOUGLAS GAUTIER

SOMETHING ON SATURDAY TURNS 4O!
Photo: Cath Leo
FOR 2 TO 10 YEAR OLDS EVERY SATURDAY FROM APRIL – AUGUST Adelaide Festival Centre’s Something on Saturday celebrates a milestone birthday in 2017 – it’s turning 40! This amazing program, which was originally called “An Alternative to Football”, has become a South Australian institution, entertaining and engaging generations of local families through the winter months. Many children have enjoyed their first theatrical experience through Something on Saturday, which incorporates a performance and free craft workshop each week. More than 15,000 children and their families participate in the program each year and Something on Saturday will continue to provide quality shows and workshops aimed at inspiring the hearts and minds of little South Australians – hopefully for the next 40 years! Adelaide grandmother Sue Collins is living proof that Something on Saturday is a pivotal program, captivating the audiences of yesterday, today and, most importantly, tomorrow… The program is released in early March every year. Check our website for full details.
FANFARE Fanfare is an annual competition open to young Australians aged 12-21 years. It invites young people to compose a 30 second Fanfare that call audiences to their seats in venues around Australia. The young composers are mentored by professionals and work with the Australian Youth Orchestra to record their compositions. Listen out for the Fanfares at the Adelaide Festival Centre throughout 2017. For more information go to: artology.org.au

“I brought my own three children along to Something on Saturday many years ago when it was called “An Alternative to Football” and now, 40 years down the track, it’s a great opportunity to bring along my grandson Charlie. This program is a great way to get them interested in the arts, music and craft – Charlie already has a great interest in the arts at four years of age, as do my children who are now in their 30s and 40s. Having a program like Something on Saturday aimed at children is just a wonderful thing. I’m so pleased I could introduce my children to it, as well as Charlie and hopefully the younger grandchildren as well over the next few years. It has truly become a tradition in our family.” Sue Collins (patron)
EXHIBITIONS COME AND ENGAGE WITH OUR YEAR-LONG EXHIBITION PROGRAM Enjoy a unique cultural experience when you visit one of the Adelaide Festival Centre’s many exhibitions. The exhibition program is as diverse as the spaces it occupies. From outdoor sculptural works to new media exhibitions, the program provides the chance to educate, interact and enjoy. Highlights of the program include our annual artist-in-residence program, solo exhibitions by local artists and world-first performance projects by international artists. The program demonstrates excellence and leadership in the arts through the display of its significant permanent collections, a rich and diverse ongoing curated exhibition program and associated public programs throughout the Adelaide Festival Centre in the Artspace Gallery and theatre foyers.
PERFORMING ARTS COLLECTION Every show comes to a close but its memory is forever captured and preserved within the Performing Arts Collection. Dame Edna’s iconic glasses, Judith Anderson’s ashes and an astonishing program collection dating back to 1881 – the Performing Arts Collection is home to these and hundreds of unique objects. These objects tell the dramatic on-stage and behind-the-scenes stories of performing arts in South Australia. Established in 1979, the collection is an amazingly rich resource. It holds a stunning array of costumes, set models, designs, posters, ephemera, photographs and programs from theatre, music, music theatre, opera, dance, circus, festivals, theatre décor and design. Items are donated to the collection by the performers, creatives and family members who want a permanent home to preserve and display our illustrious performing arts history.

Art by South Australian Aboriginal Artists
2O17 Adelaide Festival Centre is proud to be celebrating the 12th OUR MOB program. Over the years, since it began in 2006, we have continuously celebrated the diversity and talent of South Australia’s Aboriginal artists through OUR MOB exhibitions. OUR MOB, a state-wide community program, presents artworks by South Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in curated exhibitions held in the Adelaide Festival Centre foyers and Artspace Gallery. The program ensures that significant and varied art works are seen by theatre patrons, visual art lovers and those keen to learn about the stories of South Australia’s talented Indigenous artists. Over the years the OUR MOB project has boosted the careers of numerous Indigenous artists and generated sales to support their art practices and families.
Entries to OUR MOB are open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists living in South Australia. This includes young or emerging artists, as well as established art makers. Applications open in April 2017 and close in August. All eligible artists are encouraged to “give it a go”. Entry forms are available on the OUR MOB web page. Emerging artists can also apply for the Don Dunstan Foundation Our Mob Emerging Artists Prize of $5,000, while artists under 18 are eligible to win the OUR YOUNG MOB prize. The work of South Australian Aboriginal artists are as diverse as the environments in which they live. This is your chance to buy new work for home or office; see fascinating, innovative pieces in one place – a tribute to the Indigenous talent that exists right here in South Australia.

Ludovico Einaudi returns to Australia with the release of his highly anticipated album Elements. Breathtaking and extraordinary, Elements is an exceptionally beautiful, moving work brought to life on stage with his band and a striking multimedia & lighting display. Ludovico Einaudi’s hauntingly beautiful and evocative music tops the charts in the UK and Europe, and he was BAFTA-nominated for his score of This is England. His genre-defying music has been described as minimalist, alt-classical, ambient and contemporary. Inspired by classical, African music to folk and rock, Ludovico Einaudi is arguably one of the most influential and popular composers in Europe.

ADELAIDE UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC
INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY
Since it was named a UNESCO City of Music in December, 2015, Adelaide’s reputation as a vibrant musical mecca has continued to grow. This global recognition shines a spotlight on Adelaide’s thriving music scene and provides a platform on which to build further exchange programs and musical collaborations within the worldwide Creative Cities Network of UNESCO. One of those collaborations is UNESCO’s International Jazz Day, held annually on April 30. This is a global celebration that recognizes the incredible artform of jazz – and it has the backing of some big names including legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as a UNESCO Ambassador. In 2017, Adelaide Festival Centre will play a major role in these worldwide jazz celebrations, with International Jazz Day forming a springboard into a week of jazz events in May. Expect international artists, world premieres, grassroots talent and so much more. Celebrations will also include Generations in Jazz, an incredible event bringing together thousands of young jazz musicians in Mount Gambier each year. Adelaide Festival Centre and jazz legend James Morrison are working in close collaboration to ensure the eyes of the world will be on South Australia throughout April and May as we salute all things jazz.

“We really are turning this into a celebration that I believe the rest of the world will look at and say, ‘now that’s how it’s done’. It’s going to be huge!” JAMES MORRISON

MR STINK
IN A DEEP DARK FOREST
LIVE ON STAGE!
Written by Roslyn Oades Produced by The Inhabitors
A play by Maryam Master Based on the book by David Walliams Directed by Jonathan Biggins
An exciting new adventure game set in a magical pop-up forest, played in the dark!
“Mr Stink stank. He also stunk. And if it was correct English to say he stinked, then he stinked as well…”
Once upon a time, an enchanted forest was in trouble. The ancient trees that had once bathed in shafts of golden sun had been plunged into darkest shadow. The story begins when a tribe of brave children set forth into the darkness on a daring quest to return the light and save the beautiful forest. Guided by the Storyteller you will undergo a series of fun challenges to complete the quest and bring to life this classic storytelling adventure. The quest is limited to 12 brave people per adventure – book early before it sells out!
It all starts when Chloe, just about the loneliest girl in the world, makes friends with Mr Stink, the local tramp. Sure he smells a bit, but he’s the only person who’s ever been nice to her. So, when Mr Stink needs a place to stay, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed. Now Chloe’s got to make sure no one finds out her secret, but she’s about to learn that some secrets have a way of leading to disaster. And speaking of secrets, there just might be more to Mr Stink than meets the eye… or the nose… Mr Stink is a touching, twisted, hilarious, and very smelly tale by David Walliams of Little Britain fame… hold on to your nose! JUMP FIRST, ASK LATER
HART
By Powerhouse Youth Theatre and Force Majeure Directed by Byron Perry
By She Said Theatre “I was always like, like a magnet with my Dad, like everywhere he went I was right next to him… He never got rid of me…”
Urban Dance Meets Parkour Jump First, Ask Later embodies the spirit of Parkour. This powerful work tells the collective stories of six young champions of Parkour – stories of first and secondgeneration Australians overcoming social isolation and stigma through movement. It may be an adrenaline-pumping extreme sport, but at the heart of Parkour is a mindset of creativity. Scrambling, jumping and tumbling through the urban landscape; Parkour sets up a notion that the obstacles you encounter shouldn’t be avoided but rather deliberately engaged with in order to find your path – ‘jump first, ask later’. Between the years 1900-1970, an unknown number of Indigenous Australian children were forcibly removed from their families. Using testimonials from survivors of the Stolen Generations, Noongar man Ian Michael shares the silenced stories of this country in a multi-award-winning performance that is moving and heartfelt, giving a voice to members of our community who have often been silenced. ANCIENT RAIN Paul Kelly & Camille O’Sullivan with Feargal Murray
The words of great Irish poets are given new breath in this premiere collaboration between three inimitable artists. Paul Kelly is a master chronicler of love, loss, guilt and redemption. His songs are filled with deeply flawed and hungry humanity, recognisable to us all. Camille O’Sullivan, either in full flight or stillness, is powerful, vulnerable, complex and shape-shifting. With pianist Feargal Murray, Camille and Paul have set poems to original music – some well known and loved by Yeats, Heaney and Kavanagh. Others by Eavan Boland, Paula Meehan and Jessica Traynor emerging in recent years are already becoming classics. YOUNG BARBARIANS
KREUTZER & TOLSTOY
Kodály models perfectly the crosspollination of Hungarian folk materials and the formal structures of art music. His populist, folk-based approach provided a model for educational systems worldwide. Written in 1914, the Duo for violin and cello, Opus 7 maintains a perfect balance between the two instruments with Hungarian contours, rhapsodic textures and enigmatic virtuosity. “Our movement rejects all distinctions based on class or social status. Music belongs to all.” Zoltán Kodály
“Music carries me instantly and directly into the state of consciousness that was experienced by the composer. My soul merges with his, and together with him I’m transported from one state of consciousness into another” Leo Tolstoy. Beethoven’s heroic sonata for violin and piano inspired Tolstoy’s dark and disturbing novella linked by the same name: the Kreutzer Sonata. The ninth of Beethoven’s ten sonatas for violin and piano it is the grandest and most impressive of them all. The dedicatee of Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata considered it so impenetrable that he never even played it.

RENEWAL OF
HER MAJESTY’S THEATRE In October 2014 we launched a successful major Foundation Appeal to raise funds to purchase 62 Grote Street, next door to Her Majesty’s Theatre. This purchase enables us to increase the seating capacity of this iconic theatre from 950 to 1450. In July 2016 we received the exciting news that the State Government were injecting $35.2 million to this redevelopment project. Our Foundation needs to raise $3 million in 3 years to complete the project. Please support the largest capital campaign ever managed by our Foundation – get behind this worthwhile project and donate online via our website: Support Us/Her Majesty’s Theatre Renewal Project or phone us on: (08) 8216 8826. Your support will be greatly appreciated. Gifts of $2 or more are tax deductible.
