Adelaide Festival Centre is the heart of the arts in South Australia. Established in 1973, it is Australia’s first capital city arts venue and hosts more than one million people annually. As well as presenting theatre, dance, music, and exhibitions, Adelaide Festival Centre creates diverse festivals to inspire, challenge, educate and entertain. We welcome audiences of all ages, experience, and cultures.

Adelaide Festival Centre is located on the traditional lands for the Kaurna people. We pay respect to ancestors and elders past, present, and emerging as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains. We honour their cultural and spiritual relationship with their country and we do so in the spirit of reconciliation.

Adelaide Festival Centre celebrates Adelaide’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music.

WELCOME TO A NEW CHAPTER FOR

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE

2

Welcome to Adelaide Festival Centre and the start of a new decade. We are delighted to present you with a wideranging and satisfying three months of theatre, musicals, festivals and activities for children and families.

Adelaide has a long and proud history in generating world-class musicians and terrific music festivals and the international recognition that comes with being a city of music is invaluable.

Adelaide Festival Centre is very proud to be the historic home of the Adelaide Festival. This year’s AF program includes some of the world’s best opera, ballet and theatre and the festival activities continue here throughout the day and night.

This autumn we will celebrate live music in all its manifestations. State Opera South Australia will present two magnificent productions and Adelaide Festival Centre will present International Jazz Day, Grandmothers Songs and the latest chapter in Morgan’s International Piano Series.

The international phenomenon that is School of Rock the Musical bursts onto the stage at Festival Theatre in March – it’s the perfect show for all music-lovers and secret rebels. Adelaide loves all kinds of music and the endorsement of Adelaide as a Creative City of Music by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) in 2015 highlighted our strong music heritage.

Thanks to all our home companies, production and presenting partners for bringing great artists and live performances to our venues and to the Government of South Australia for its ongoing support. Douglas Gautier AM

SCHOOL OF ROCK THE MUSICAL The film blew your mind. The musical conquered Broadway and London! Now it’s finally Adelaide’s turn to experience this epic award-winning production in March 2020 for a strictly limited season! Based on the iconic hit movie, with music by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, this irresistible new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?

DANCE FRANCE AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Presented by Adelaide Festival

LYON OPERA BALLET 6

The work of three women, all seminal figures in contemporary dance, converge on a single piece of music in this unique program that has wowed critics and audiences worldwide. The three works – each to a different recording of Beethoven’s ‘Grand Fugue’ couldn’t be more varied. Lucinda Childs: elegant and mathematically precise, Anne Teressa De Keersmaeker: wild and freespirited (small wonder Beyonce gave in to the temptation to rip her off!), Maguy Marin: an earthy, reckless blood red rage against death.

OPERA UK AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Co-produced by Opera Ventures, Scottish Opera, Houston Grand Opera and Théâtre national de l’Opéra Comique in association with Adelaide Festival

BREAKING THE WAVES Fresh from its European premiere season at the 2019 Edinburgh International Festival comes the Adelaide Festival exclusive season of Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves, one of the most sensational operas of recent years. It does a great film justice but goes further, the score giving voice to the screenplay’s subtleties and creating some of the repertoire’s most complex characters. With the full original cast, along with the orchestra and chorus of Scottish Opera, this is a must-see for opera, music and theatre lovers alike.

ENTER ACHILLES 8

One pub, eight blokes, a stacked jukebox and a load of pints. It was always going to kick off. Twenty-five years after legendary dance iconoclast Lloyd Newson (DV8) first dragged British pub culture kicking and yelling onto the stage, Rambert and Sadler’s Wells present Newson’s reworking of this landmark physical-theatre production. As pertinent now as it was when first staged in 1995, the production lifts the lid on “the straitjacket of what’s deemed to be masculine” (The Observer), examining the terrors and tenderness of beer-soaked testosterone. It now returns to the stage with a new cast, selected by Newson, in his first-ever collaboration with another company, the world-renowned Rambert alongside Sadler’s Wells. 13–15 MAR DUNSTAN PLAYHOUSE 1 hr 20 mins no interval Warning: Recommended for ages 15+. TWO CREWS

A cornerstone of hip hop culture, crews grew out of the territorialism of street gangs in the Bronx of the 1970s. The collective creativity of a group of dancers, united by culture, style or connection to place, was honed through competition in block party “battles”. Recent years have seen a shift to individuality in hip hop dance styles but in this spectacular piece choreographer Nick Power showcases two unique crews from opposite sides of the globe: Lady Rocks and Riddim Nation. 10-14 MAR SPACE THEATRE 1 hr no interval SINGLE

REGURGITATOR’S POGOGO SHOW

CREATION CREATION

Renowned Brisbane mashup rock/electro/ punk/poppin’ fun time outfit Regurgitator have cooked up a sugar-soaked record written especially for kids!

How did we get here? What is the meaning of life?

Having performed at a number of children’s events in recent years, the multiplatinum, multi-ARIA Award-winning band has developed the kids’ music project Regurgitator’s Pogogo Show.

And is it possible to lick your elbow? Following in-depth interviews with the general public, we tasked two of our favourite artists to answer life’s big questions. Before your very eyes, our unreliable experts build, battle and brawl their way through the mysteries of the universe.

The collection of songs from The Really Really Really Really Boring Album is about as silly and cheeky as a record can get.

Tackling everything from the big bang to the afterlife, Creation Creation is a big hearted and hilarious escapade for the whole family that guarantees your most baffling question answered… sort of.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO PAUL

EUPHORIA

By Jonathan Biggins

Australian politics are in peril and there’s only one man who can save it. Luckily a window has opened up in his very busy schedule. Paul Keating is a giant in Australia’s political memory. He knows it, you know it. And he’s here to tell you why he’s remembered so fondly. A smash-hit comedy, The Gospel According to Paul sees the hilarious Jonathan Biggins become Keating in a virtuousic performance that brims with the former Prime Minister’s signature wit, charisma and very expensive suits. Breathlessly funny and gently poignant, Biggins as Keating might just make you a believer.

By Emily Steel

Commissioned by Country Arts SA

Meg is busy and she’d rather not be. But sometimes she can’t help it. She’s holding a town meeting and her ex-student Ethan is there. He hasn’t got a job... he can’t help that either. She wants to start a new festival to celebrate everything their country town has to offer. It’s going to be called “Euphoria”, which means “happiness”. And they should be happy, right? Informed by real conversations with members of South Australia’s regional communities, Euphoria is a moving new work about love and connection that will see audiences come together for a town meeting they’ll never forget. 21-30 MAY SPACE THEATRE
