Das verflixte Siebte und ein «Artist in Residence» Das verflixte siebte Jahr. Nach sieben Jahren zeigt sich, ob eine Idee bestand hat oder nicht. Was sollen wir Spezielles machen? Ein richtiges Jubiläum ist es noch nicht – dennoch: Auch in diesem Jahr warten wir mit etlichen Neuerungen auf. Da wäre einmal ein «Artist in Residence» – der Komponist, Pianist und Arrangeur Dave Grusin, der singende italienische Anwalt Paolo Conte oder «The Gallery». Endlich wird das Festival da Jazz auch in Bildern präsent sein! Ferner weihen wir eine weitere gloriose Konzert-Lokalität ein: The Laudinella Concert Hall. Gleich drei Hauptkonzerte werden in der ehrwürdigen Laudinella stattfinden, bevor sie dann komplett umgebaut wird. Zum zweiten Mal können wir mit Freuden das Open-Air auf Muottas Muragl durchführen; dank grosszügigen Partnern spielen «The Brand New Heavies» kostenlos für Sie zum Sonnenuntergang auf dem Berg. Ich danke all den Menschen, Firmen und Institutionen, die dieses gegenstromförmige Festival Jahr für Jahr ermöglichen!

The seventh year of our festival is approaching fast. And of course the question is, will there be a seven year itch? After seven years it becomes apparent whether an idea will last or not. What can we do to make it special? It isn’t really a proper anniversary as such – but still: even in our seventh year we don’t just take it easy. On the contrary, we have come up with a number of novelties. This year’s festival features an ‘Artist in Residence’, the composer, pianist and arranger Dave Grusin, the singing Italian lawyer Paolo Conte and The Gallery. Grusin left a lasting mark on my musical childhood. Up to then I had thought that ‘real jazz’ stopped in Chicago. Soon I realised that this wasn’t the case. Grusin and his label GRP opened up a new musical world for me, crossing the limits of genres. For me it is therefore a very special honour to celebrate the 80th birthday of a true legend with you! I would like to thank all the people, companies and institutions who make this counter-streamlined festival possible year after year.

Auf der einen Seite ein Pionier, der hochklassigen Jazz zurück zu seinen Ursprüngen, in einen kleinen und sehr gepflegten Club, bringt. Und auf der anderen Seite der Pionier des Vollhybridantriebs bei Premium-Fahrzeugen mit seiner dynamischen Innovationskraft. Festival da Jazz and Lexus – By now six years have passed since the Festival da Jazz and Lexus found each other – two partners that suit each other perfectly. On the one hand, a pioneer bringing top class jazz back to its roots in a small, sophisticated club and on the other hand, the pioneer of hybrid drive technology for premium cars with their innovative strength. Both partners have a common goal of convincing with highest quality, be it with automobiles or in creating a concert experience. Dave Grusin artist in residence

Zum ersten Mal hat das Festival da Jazz St. Moritz einen «Artist in Residence»: Mit Dave Grusin ehren wir einen polyvalenten Künstler, der beim geneigten Publikum vielleicht erst beim Hören seiner Musik den «Aha-Effekt» auslöst. Der mehrfache Grammy-Gewinner, Filmkomponist, Arrangeur und Pianist ist ausserdem Gründer des renommierten Jazz & Fusionlabels GRP-Records. Dave Grusin komponierte und produzierte zudem Filmmusiken, für die er teilweise mit Preisen überhäuft wurde: 1975 schrieb er den Soundtrack zum Film «Die drei Tage des Condors», 1989 «Die fabelhaften Baker Boys», 1990 zu «Havanna», 1993 zu «Die Firma» und 1999 zum Film «Begegnung des Schicksals». Auch als Arrangeur wurde er mehrfach ausgezeichnet; und erhielt dafür acht Grammys, etwa 2003 für sein Instrumentalarrangement von «Mean Old Man» (für James Taylor).

For the first time the Festival da Jazz St. Moritz features an “Artist in Residence”. And it isn’t just anyone. With Dave Grusin we honour a multifaceted artist. Maybe the audience will only have their wow-moment once they hear his music: I think, I now this from somewhere! The multiple Grammy Award winner, film music composer, arranger and pianist is also founder of the renowned jazz & fusion label GRPRecords. Dave Grusin has composed and produced several film soundtracks, for which he was awarded among others an Oscar and a Grammy. In 1975 he wrote the soundtrack for the film “Three days of the Condor”, 1989 “The Fabulous Baker Boys”, in 1990 for “Havanna”, and in 1999 for the film “Random Hearts”. In addition, he also produced the soundtrack for “The Firm”. Furthermore, he has also won several awards as an arranger. From 1986 on he was awarded a total of eight Grammys, for instance in 2003 for the instrumental arrangement of “Mean Old Man” (for James Taylor).

a personal note from christian jott jenny Während meine Mit-Teenager «Guns n’ Roses» oder vielleicht «R.E.M.» hörten, wurde meine musikalische Jugend von Musikern wie Grusin geprägt. Bis dahin glaubte ich, dass der «richtige» Jazz spätestens in Chicago aufhören muss – wohnt doch die Jazzpolizei in den USA immer noch an der Ostküste. Bald wurde mir klar: Dem ist nicht so. Grusin und seine GRP eröffneten mir einen musikalischen Fundus, für den ich meinen letzten Rappen ausgab. Und vor allem bewies er, wie einst schon Kurt Weill, Lenny Bernstein oder George Gershwin, dass unser Genre-Denken eigentlich stupide ist. So umfasst sein Werk alles von zeitgenössischem Jazz über Kammermusik bis hin zu Fusion.

Up to then I had thought that “real jazz” stopped in Chicago – and the “jazz police” still resides on the Eastside of the USA, so to speak… Soon I realised that this wasn’t the case. Grusin and his GRP opened up a new musical world for me, for which I was prepared to spend my last centimes. But most of all he proved, like Kurt Weill, Lenny Bernstein or George Gershwin had done before, that our way of thinking in genres is in fact rather stupid. As a result, his work spans from temporary jazz to chamber music and to fusion.

Als 2011 Grusins musikalischer Ziehsohn Lee Ritenour mit seiner Band auch Dave im Gepäck mitgebracht hat, ging für mich ein doppelter Kindheitstraum in Erfüllung. So ist es für das Festival da Jazz, aber auch für mich persönlich eine grosse Ehre, zusammen mit Ihnen den 80. Geburtstag einer grossen lebenden Legende feiern zu dürfen! Und dies gleich in dreifacher Ausführung: Ein kammermusikalisches Konzert zusammen mit der Bündner Kammerphilharmonie wird Grusins geniale Gratwanderung zwischen Klassik und Jazz zeigen. Der zweite Abend wird der intimste sein: One Night only – zusammen mit seinem Bruder Don an zwei Konzertflügeln und Special Guests. Der dritte Abend ist die Reprise zusammen mit Lee Ritenour & Band. When Lee Ritenour and his band came to St. Moritz in 2011 and brought along their musical mentor Dave Grusin, a childhood dream came true for me. For me personally it is therefore a very special honour to celebrate the 80th birthday of a true legend with you – and this not only once, but three times: a chamber music concert with the Grisons Chamber Philharmonic will show Grusin’s ingenious balancing act between classic music and jazz. The second evening will be the most intimate. One night only – together with his brother Don on two grand pianos and special guests. The third evening will feature Dave Grusin with Lee Ritenour & Band. (see pages 83–87)

Artist Spotlight Esperanza Spalding jazz joy ahoi

Otto und Ottfriede Normalverbraucher denken beim Stichwort Jazz gerne mal an verkopfte, auf den Boden starrende Tonleiter-Saxophonisten, welche emotional nicht berühren. Das Gegengift hat einen Namen: Esperanza Spalding. Unter der auffälligen Wuschelfrisur steckt eine brillante Musikerin mit Charme, Verve und Lebensfreude, die selbst den best-gecoachte Popstar neidisch werden lässt. Sie begeistert am Bass und Gesangsmikrophon gleichermassen, ihr erfrischender Crossover-Mix lässt niemanden kalt und ihre Kooperationen mit Grössen wie Joe Lovano oder Tom Harrell deuten den Weg in den Jazz-Olymp. Der Weg dorthin führt sie dieses Jahr durchs Oberengadin. Einfach schön. (s. Seite 53)

Average Joe and Jane probably tend to associate jazz with a nerdy saxophone player, staring at the ground, playing up and down the scales, completely out of touch with the audience. However, the antidote has a name: Esperanza Spalding. The brilliant musician with her trademark hair, full of verve and charm could even make the most commercialised pop star envious. She inspires the audience with her bass guitar and her voice, and her fresh and intriguing crossover mix touches a cord with everyone. Her cooperation with saxophone colossus Joe Lovano or Tom Harrel points the way to the Mount Olympus of jazz. And on her way there, she will pass through the Upper Engandine this year. Simply beautiful. (see page 53)

Artist Spotlight Pepe Lienhard jazzmusiker, bigband-leader, schweizer legende Wenige Musiker werden in der Schweiz derart unterschätzt wie der Saxophonist, Bigband-Leader und Arrangeur Pepe Lienhard. Es ist an der Zeit, das ewige «Swisslady»-Image endlich zu revidieren. Dieser Mann ist zu weit mehr fähig – schlägt doch Pepes Musikherz für den Jazz, für den Swing und gute Musik... Sein Orchester, welches sich ohne Probleme mit hervorragenden US-Bands à la Nelson Riddle u.a. messen darf, begleitet seit über 30 Jahren Udo Jürgens mit genialsten, ausgeklügelten Arrangements, die Spass machen! Wir sind glücklich und stolz, als Premiere Pepe’s BigBand in ihrem Ursprung zu präsentieren: mit einem prächtigen Swingprogramm, dies auf engstem Raum, 18 Mannen zusammengepfercht, ohne ein Mikrofon. Zurück in die Zukunft! (s. Seite 69)

Few musician are as much underrated in Switzerland as the saxophone player, big band leader and arranger Pepe Lienhard. So it’s about high time to revise his ‘Swiss Lady’ image. With his passion for jazz, swing and good music, this artist is capable of much more. His orchestra has been accompanying Udo Jürgens with ingenious and sophisticated arrangements for over 30 years and can easily match US bands in the style of the Nelson Riddle Orchestra and others. And not to forget: they’re great fun! We are proud and happy to present Pepe’s big band in their original line-up with a superb swing programme. And this in a very small space: 18 guys jammed together, without microphones. Welcome back to the future! (see page 69)

Der 1974 von Gunter Sachs gegründete Club der Vampire wurde durch all seine Sagen, Märchen und Wahrheiten mit der Zeit zum Mythos und erreicht unter dem Präsidium ihrer Heiligkeit, dem Designer und Professor mit Leerstuhl in England, «his Highness» Rolf Sachs, definitiv Kultstatus. Hier treffen Geist und Humor aufeinander, auch wenn es nur darum geht, mal aus dem alltäglichen Schema auszubrechen. IMPROVISATION wird hier gross geschrieben. So wird dem wundersamen Gebälk seit 2007 neuer Atem eingehaucht: Jazz. Der Dracula Club ist das Herzstück des Festival da Jazz, bietet mit seinen 150 Plätzen eine ideale Clubstimmung und für Künstler und Besucher eine neue Heimat.

Thanks to myths, fairy tales and truths, the Club of the Vampires, founded by Gunter Sachs in 1974, has over the years become a legend and under the presidency of his holiness, the designer and professor with a chair in England, his highness Rolf Sachs, it has definitely gained cult status. Intellect and humour come together here, even if it is just to leave the daily grind behind for a while. Here it’s improvisation with a capital I. Since 2007 the vault has been given a breath of fresh air: jazz. The Dracula Club is the heart of the Festival da Jazz. With just 150 seats it offers an ideal club atmosphere and a delightful temporary home for artists and visitors alike.

Dirty Loops hit me!

Die Band Dirty Loops aus Schweden wurde dank Youtube und Facebook zu einem internationalen Phänomen: Was als Insider-Scherz von drei Musikstudenten begann, zieht immer weitere Kreise. Die Spezialität von Dirty Loops waren freche Coverversionen von Hitparadennummern wie «Just Dance» (Lady Gaga), «Baby» (Justin Bieber), «Rolling in the Deep» (Adele) oder «Circus» (Britney Spears). Nachdem man damit begonnen

hatte, ihre Covers zu covern, war es für Dirty Loops an der Zeit, eigene Stücke zu schreiben – als Vorbilder nennen die Schweden Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson und Pat Metheny. The Swedish band Dirty Loops has become internationally known thanks to Youtube and Facebook. What began just to have fun and a creative outlet is by now attracting ever increasing

Natalie Cole unforgettable – with love

Nat «King» Cole und die Folgen – Teil 1. Natürlich tut man Natalie Cole unrecht, wenn man sie auf die Rolle als Tochter einer Legende reduziert: Damit verkauft man weder Millionen von Alben, noch heimst man neun Grammys ein. Nichtsdestotrotz schwebt natürlich bei den Auftritten Natalie Coles etwas vom Geist ihres unvergessenen Vaters über der Bühne. Natalie Cole hat zwei autobiografische Bücher veröffentlicht, in

denen sie schonungslos von den Höhen und Tiefen in ihrem Leben berichtet: Triumphe auf der Bühne, Drogenabstürze daneben. Gerettet wurde sie schliesslich durch die Kraft der Liebe. Er wurde 1931 als Nesthäkchen der Famile Cole und 16 Jahre nach seinem berühmtesten Bruder, der 1965 starb, geboren. 1976 nahm Freddy Cole das Album «The Cole Nobody Knows» auf – ganze vier Jahrzehnte später trug ein Dokumentarfilm denselben Titel. Tatsächlich wurde Freddy Cole erst sehr

spät berühmt: In einem Alter, in dem andere sich zur Ruhe setzen, startete er voll durch und wurde für seine reife Jazz-Vokalkunst mit Lob geradezu überschüttet. Nat “King” Cole, the sequel – part 2. Bê Ignacio ist die Idealbesetzung für eine heisse Brasil Night in St. Moritz. Die Sängerin, die früher als Model für Jill Sander arbeitete, ist eine echte Weltbürgerin: Sie wuchs in Sao Paulo auf und lebt nun in Deutschland – auf ihrer Facebook-Seite sieht man sie sowohl im Tonstudio (in New York!) als auch beim Skifahren (in St. Moritz!). Und mit der Nummer «Rhythm of the Sea» hat sie das Radiopublikum in

Deutschland ganz närrisch gemacht. Das Lebensmotto von Bê lautet: «Com Samba no Pé, e o Pé no Samba.» Frei übersetzt: Mit Musik in den Beinen gehst du mühelos durchs Leben. Bê Ignacio is the perfect act for a hot Brazilian night in St. Moritz. The singer who used to work as a model for Jill Sander is a real cosmopolitan. She grew up in Sao Paulo and now lives in Germany.

Mit «Colors of a Dream» ist Tom Harrell ein weiterer Geniestreich geglückt, mit dem er einmal mehr unter Beweis stellt, dass er nicht nur einen siebten Sinn für traumhafte Melodien, sondern auch für aussergewöhnliche Klangfarben hat. Dieses Mal verzichtet der Trompeter und Komponist Harrell auf ein Harmonieinstrument, dafür arbeitet er mit zwei Bässen. Einer dieser Bässe wird von der Überfliegerin Esperanza Spalding

From an early age Pepe Lienhard, born in Lenzburg in 1946, was on the sunny side of the Swiss music scene. At the age of 12 he set up his own Dixieland band, and at 17 launched his first big band, winning the first prize at the Zurich Jazz Festival

Wunderbar wandelbar – bereits für ihr zweites Album hat sich Anna Rossinelli für ein neues Gleis entschieden. Grooviger, tanzbarer und direkter springen ihre grandiosen Songs von der Bühne zum Publikum und fordern das Tanzbein. Der Olympiasong «shine in the light» war der Anfang; weiter geht’s an unserer kleinen Jazz-Olympiade.

Am selben Tag, an dem seine Tochter Delia in der Sunny Bar zu hören ist, ist auch Vali Mayer, der früher mit Miles Davis und Charles Aznavour auftrat, in St. Moritz zu Gast (und wer weiss, vielleicht schaut ja auch noch Jojo Mayer vorbei...). Mit dem flinkfingrigen Gitarristen Haens’che Weiss bildet der singende Bassist Vali Mayer ein swingendes Gipsy-Jazz-Duo der Extraklasse.

«Highest Club Festival» Bereits im siebten Jahr in Folge kann die Frage, wie man auf die Idee kommt gerade in St. Moritz ein Jazz Festival aufzuziehen, mit der simplen Antwort: «Wo sonst spiegelt sich die unbändige Kraft, die Freiheit und Schönheit des Jazz so sehr in der unmittelbaren Umgebung wieder wie hier, in den Bündner Bergen?», beantwortet werden. Es ist tatsächlich so, dass wir das wohl höchstgelegene Jazz Festival der Welt veranstalten. Eingerahmt von Piz Bernina und Piz Nair strahlt die Musik des Festivals mittlerweile weit über die Grenzen der Schweiz hinaus und macht es so zu einem Anziehungspunkt von Musikliebhabern aus der ganzen Welt. Deshalb wird in Zukunft die Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Warum nur noch lauten: «Wo denn sonst, wenn nicht hier in St. Moritz?»

Already for the seventh year in a row, the question of how we came up with the idea of organising a jazz festival in St. Moritz has a simple answer: “Is there another place where the boundless energy, the freedom and beauty of jazz is better reflected in the immediate surroundings than here, in the mountains of Grisons?” As a matter of fact, with the Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz, we organise the highest jazz festival in the world. Nestling between the imposing peaks of Piz Bernina and Piz Nair, the festival is today known far beyond the borders of Switzerland and has become an attraction for fans of good music from all over the world. In future, the answer to the question why will therefore simply be: “Where else, if not here in St. Moritz?”

Er gehört zum Festival-Inventar wie Othella Dallas oder die unverwechselbare Atmosphäre im Dracula Club. Entstanden ist ein bunter Fundus extraordinärer Momentaufnahmen. Diese sind während des ganzen Festivals in den Schaufenstern ausgewählter Geschäften und im Hotel Laudinella zu bestaunen. Mit «Pictures in Town» freuen wir uns, Ihnen ein weiteres Novum am Festival da Jazz offerieren zu dürfen – auch für etwas mehr Festivalstimmung im Dorf.

Since the very beginning of the Festival da Jazz, the photographer Giancarlo Cattaneo from St. Moritz has been accompanying the festival and its artists from concert to concert. He belongs to the festival like Othella Dallas or the unique atmosphere of the Dracula Club. The result is a colourful collection of extraordinary snap-shots in time. The photographs are exhibited in selected shop windows and at Hotel Laudinella during the festival. With “Pictures in Town” we are delighted to present another attraction at the Festival da Jazz and to bring more of the festival’s atmosphere to the village.

Das Herzstück ist eine beeindruckende Ausstellung des Berliner Photographen Matthias Heyde. Die Bilder sind zum grössten Teil während des letztjährigen Festivals entstanden. Werfen Sie einen Blick hinter die Kulissen und schauen Sie den Musikern über die Schultern. Daneben darf in alten Aufnahmen und Büchern gestöbert und neue Musik entdeckt werden oder Sie geniessen einfach ein gutes Glas Wein oder eine Tasse Kaffee. Wie auch immer - Wir freuen uns auf Ihren Besuch in «The Gallery» und laden Sie herzlich zur Vernissage am 12 Juli ein...

Before the concerts the Château Papillon des Arts will be the new meeting point of the Festival da Jazz. The centrepiece is the impressive exhibition by the photographer Matthias Heyde from Berlin. Most photographs were taken during last year’s festival. So take a look behind the scenes or over the shoulders of the musicians. In addition you can browse through old books and photographs or just relax with a nice glass of wine or a delicious cup of coffee. Whatever you feel like doing, we are looking forward to your visit at “The Gallery” and invite you to our opening event on July 12.

Laudinella Concert Hall Zum ersten Mal findet in der altehrwürdigen Laudinella-Concert-Hall eine Trilogie des Festival da Jazz St. Moritz statt: Drei unserer Hauptakteure werden – massgeblich aufgrund der orchestralen Erscheinung und Logistik – ihr Konzert dort geben: Die amerikanische Superband PINK MARTINI, die italienische Naturgewalt PAOLO CONTE sowie unser Artist in Residence, Mr. DAVE GRUSIN zusammen mit der Kammerphilharmonie Graubünden. Durchaus ein historischer Moment, denn die Laudinella wird nie wieder so sein, wie sie nun ist: Die unfassbaren Baupläne der Genossenschaft Laudinella, verkörpert durch ihren Deus ex Machina, Felix Schlatter, sehen für 2016 ein Konzertsaal erster Güte vor, auf welchen wir in St. Moritz schon seit einem halben Jahrhundert gewartet haben! Diesen werden wir dann bestimmt mit weiteren Grössen und Stars bespielen, auch wenn uns der unvergleichbare Charme eines Kirchgemeindehauses fehlen wird...

For the first time, the time-honoured Laudinella Concert Hall will be at the heart of a trilogy of the Festival da Jazz St. Moritz. Three of the main acts of this year’s festival will perform at the venue – not least because of their orchestral appearance and logistic reasons: the American super band PINK MARTINI, the italian force of nature PAOLO CONTE, and our Artist in Residence DAVE GRUSIN featuring the Grisons Chamber Philharmonic. It will be quite a historical moment, because the Laudinella will never be the same again as it is now. The extraordinary plans of the Laudinella cooperative, embodied by their deus ex machina, Felix Schlatter, envisage a brand new, exquisite concert hall to be opened in 2016. St. Moritz has been waiting for this, for over half a century and we are looking forward to this new venue even though the incomparable charm of a parish hall will probably be missed…

The Balloon

das festival da jazz heizt ein Es ist und bleibt immer noch die vornehmste Art zu reisen, beziehungsweise: zu fahren. Der Ballon ist ein archaisches, individuelles Fortbewegungsmittel. Umweltfreundlich und der Natur und Ihren Gesetzen verpflichtet, sind Fahrten in einem Ballon wie frische Jazz-Improvisationen: Niemand kann voraussehen, wohin die Reise geht, wie weit man kommt und wie sanft man landet. Der Heissluftballon des Festival da Jazz & des Kulm Hotels wird anlässlich des 7. Festivals als Fesselballon regelmässig aufsteigen, und über unserer geliebten FestivalHeimat schweben.

It is and will be the most genteel way to travel or ride, respectively. A balloon is an archaic and individual means of transportation. Environmentally friendly, following the laws of nature, ballooning is like a fresh jazz improvisation: nobody knows where and how far the journey will go, or whether there will be a soft landing. The hot-air balloon of the Festival da Jazz & the Kulm Hotel will regularly take to the sky during the 7th festival and float above our beloved festival as a captive balloon.
