WELCOME

Welcome to Festival No.6, a festival unlike any other, situated in the most unique of locations. Uncover a world of luxury and discovery

N

umber Two: Quite a beautiful place, really, isn’t it? Almost like a world on its own. Number Six: I shall miss it when I’m gone. Number Two: Oh, it will grow on you. Step inside Festival No.6 – an event built around its unique whereabouts and carefully curated to deliver something unlike anything else. No.6 is set apart from the rest of the European festival circuit, proudly committing to a more considered approach to programming and organisation.

Sidestepping formula and replication, No.6 started out by seeking inspiration from its picturesque location – the Italiante coastal village of Portmeirion. Now gearing up for

its fifth year, the inimitable backdrop of Portmeirion has provided the foundations for an event like no other. One where festival becomes fairytale and artists and audiences alike lose themselves in an expedition of eclecticism and discovery.

estuary and soak up some sea shanties. You can shake it off to the sounds of your favourite DJs selecting cuts into the early hours. You can immerse yourself in an award-winning timetable of screenings, readings, performance art, installations, conversations and so much more. You can relax in the luxury spa and explore through the 70 acres of exotic woods that surround Portmeirion. You can eat and drink from renowned establishments and celebrated eateries.

The event is named after ‘No.6’, Patrick McGoohan’s character in the classic 1960s TV series The Prisoner which was filmed in Portmeirion. In the original series, No.6 is a free spirit – an idealist hoping to change the course of his own reality. It’s a philosophy we’ve tried to adopt.

You can experience it all under one banner. It is this accumulated experience which sits at the heart of No.6 – a place where you can put reality on hold, escape, and indulge all the senses.

You can sleep in a castle, cottages, tipis or tents. You can watch world class live acts in the gardens. You can stroll down to the

The team behind No.6 is still determined to deliver the UK’s most unique festival experience and 2016 will be the best yet. The vision was always to create a truly distinctive experience but also one which is welcoming and hospitable. Through constant review and refinement, No.6 has blossomed into a uniquely intimate boutique festival of music, art and culture. This meeting point of attractions and surroundings has to be experienced to be believed.

PORTMEIRION

P

buildings”, a village built on regeneration and imagination.

ortmeirion is a paradisal hideaway village in the North Wales county of Gwynedd. Surrounded by subtropical vegetation and tracking the coastline of the River Dwyryd, there is something superbly peaceful and special about this singular location. Like a kind of retreat from reality and the minutiae of everyday life, Portmeirion was always destined to be a sanctuary of escapism.

For the festival, this truly singular location is made the most of – from performances in the grade II listed Jacobean Town Hall right through to spoken word acts and talks on the Central Piazza. The breadth and depth of the Festival No.6 programme is meticulously organised to utilise Portmeiron in its fullest. Openair performances at Castell Park can be followed up with late-night sessions at Studio 6 situated in the gardens of Castell Deudraeth.

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis designed and built the village between 1925 and 1975, his goal being to emulate the atmospheres of the Mediterranean. Bringing together the

“ A paradisal hideaway village in the North Wales county of Gwynedd ” work of other architects and reassembling fragments from abandoned structures, Williams-Ellis orchestrated a kind of bricolage masterpiece. What remains is a playful, peculiar and fantastical structure which owes the bulk of its charm to the exquisite land it was built upon. It’s the ideal setting for a weekend like No.6. Now celebrated as one of the top tourist attractions in the North of Wales, Portmeirion is made up of a structure resembling the Italian Riviera – one where buildings and manmade structures are furnished by greenery. As you journey through the climes of No.6, you will soon see how the village’s natural structure provides the anchor of its appeal. WilliamsEllis once described it as “a home for fallen

In a sense, Festival No.6 is an extension of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis’ initial vision. His motto was “cherish the past, adorn the present and construct for the future”. Aside from bringing contemporary music acts together with bonafide legends and offering a full spectrum of gastronomical possibility, Festival No.6 is unique in its relationship with its surroundings. The rich history of Portmeiron is integral to the fabric of No.6. Classic scenes from The Prisoner will be reenacted, the torchlight parade will illuminate the village pathways and our stage of new, exciting and homegrown talent shares its name with the village’s founder. Through a devotion to the past and a commitment to the enrichment of the here-and-now, Portmeiron’s remarkable story continues long into the 21st century.

DID YOU KNOW? Sir Clough Williams-Ellis found the site for what is now Portmeirion in 1925 after looking for a site for around two decades. It was on sale and exactly what he’d been searching for – he bought it for around £5,000. TripAdvisor listed Portmeirion as one of the most colourful places in the world celebrating the polychrome layout of the village houses which ticket holders can stay at during No.6.

Siouxsie and the Banshees used Portmeirion as a location for their 1987 music video for The Passenger. The video also made use of clips from The Prisoner. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Blithe Spirit which Noel Coward wrote while staying at Portmeirion. He wrote the work in a room at the legendary Hotel Portmeirion.

STAGE NO.6 -

GRAND PAVILION

Embodying the event’s spirit of blending the old with the new, this stage will play host to a true mix of unshakable icons and unstoppable ascendant talents. In the past, the stage has been graced by Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones and Chic. That legacy continues for 2016 with outings from Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds, Hot Chip and Super Furry Animals. Most fitting for a stage walked by legends, Stage No.6 will be the stage for our very special David Bowie Reimagined tribute which you can find out more about on page 18.

Situated in the heart of the festival’s main outdoor field space, Castell Park, No.6 and The i newspaper have worked together to produce a programme of the finest new talent all timed carefully to allow you to see as much music as possible across the two main stages. As second stages go, few match up to the open air grandeur of the Grand Pavilion. As well as providing a showcase for fresh talent, The i Stage soaks up the very essence of No.6 surrounded by the natural elements of Portmeirion.

HOT CHIP

Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard Talks Springsteen, Studio Sessions And Pleasure-Seeking Ahead Of The Band’s Headline Set At No.6 -

“ I guess a festival just needs to stick to its guns and build a kind of ethos… that’s something that Festival No.6 have achieved. ” 12

HEADLINER

T

o borrow from the world of musical theatre, Joe Goddard could be labelled a ‘triple threat’. One fifth of the ineffably intriguing, pop-inflected electronic band Hot Chip, one half of the club-ready duo, The 2 Bears, and cofounder of colourfully off-kilter GrecoRoman records, he is as at home filling expansive outdoor crowds with large-scale anthemic sounds as he is DJing in darker underground dives. Such skill draws from experience; with Hot Chip’s first LP released in 2004, and a love of clubbing in his hometown of London stretching back even further, Goddard has ridden the crest of the ever evolving wave of electronicfuelled sounds for quite some time. It’s this craving for dance – the essential pleasure principle – which lies at the heart of everything he does. Whether layering over the gruffer vocals in Hot Chip’s headline live outing or cueing up selections as one of 2 Bears at the late night Studio No.6 session, it’s this pursuit of pleasure which Goddard strongly emphasises and is certain to inject into No.6 across the weekend.

Having played festivals in the past with Hot Chip and The 2 Bears, what do you think people are looking for from good festivals? I think it varies across a festival audience; if you’re at a good festival, there will be people going for something more wholesome in a beautiful place, eating good food and checking out folk bands, sitting down in the sunshine with their families. Then other people are going for a hedonistic kind of escape from the daily routine, staying up all night and dancing, getting dressed up. That’s what makes a good festival - people having all these amazing experiences, and how the festival can encompass all of that.

have fun and enjoy themselves, which is always the most important thing.

And it seems like Festival No.6 captures all of that? Definitely, Festival No.6 is a really wideranging experience.

There are so many festivals in the UK now – do you think it’s hard for events to stand out and build loyalty with ticket buyers? I guess a festival just needs to stick to its guns and build a kind of ethos, and carry that ethos through to all the other activities music, food, culture, decoration. I think if a festival works really hard at all of that then they will build a good crowd over many years and develop into something that’s good. I think that’s something that Festival No.6 have achieved, which is a very tough process for new festivals starting

You played No.6 last year with a Two Bears live show, what was your first time there like? I’d visited Portmeirion when I was a kid with my family, which was lovely, it was an amazing place in itself. But my first time at the festival was with 2 Bears and it was a really great experience. We were staying down at the hotel right by the sea, which was beautiful. I watched the Welsh Male Voice Choir covering Blue Monday and various other contemporary pop songs

“ I watched a male voice choir covering Blue Monday ... which was a lovely moment. “ You’re also DJing after your headline slot with Hot Chip, how does your approach change playing to the dancefloor? The Hot Chip set is a little bit like a DJ club set. Musically, it’s similar in that a lot of the music is like house and disco. But we also plan and play live sets in a similar way that a DJ might, building intensity and tempo. We think about a Hot Chip set quite like a DJ set. I guess the main difference is that when I DJ I’m completely free to play any music I want; it means you have a greater ability to read the crowd and change what you’re going to play next. That’s the main thing. It’s just me on my own, and the responsibility falls on me. There are less opinions to take on board - you’re a bit more in control.

which was a lovely moment. People were there with their candles, and the singing sounded really beautiful. What do you think makes it such a special festival? It’s about the festival presenting itself in a way where people from all different walks of life come together - where party people want to visit, people that are open to having a good time with strangers - it has a lot of happy, fun people getting together. I had a really good DJ set with 2 Bears involving our friends from Sink the Pink, who were dancing with us on stage. It was great – I think there’s a good vibe at the festival – there’s an audience which is very ready to

13

Are there any tracks we can expect to hear at Studio No.6? It’s a bit early to say! We’ll develop our DJ set over the next coming months as we get into summer festivals, building up a group of tracks that we feel work well and that people respond to. Things that feel like big summer tracks. I don’t really know what they are going to be yet. All I can say now is that it will be a selection of house and disco and some of our own work – all just mixed together. It’s been fifteen years now playing as a band with Hot Chip, how do you keep it fresh and exciting? When we approach a summer of festivals we try to change it around: remix our set, play a few songs in a different style, change the order, add a couple of covers. We also change up the instruments, or use different synthesisers. We just want to get something together that feels substantially different to what we did the previous year to keep things exciting for ourself – to keep the palette evolving. Hot Chip have built a reputation over the years as one of the best festival bands on the circuit. Was that something you intentionally worked on as a band? Totally – any gig that we’re approaching we try to create as fun and as entertaining a gig as possible really. When it comes to festivals that’s something we think about and work at a lot. That explains why we did a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark last year! We wanted to resurrect a pop song that would be a great festival moment. We want it to be like a joyful experience for everybody, so we definitely work hard at that. Hot Chip Headline Stage No.6, Saturday

SPECIAL GUESTS

- NO PLACE LIKE HOME -

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS Finally arriving at No.6 with the Super Furry Animals in tow, Gruff Rhys looks forward to a special return visit to Portmeirion -

SPECIAL GUESTS

A

fter being persuaded to relinquish themselves from a five-year hiatus last year by their unwavering fan-base, it is with total delight that we can say the mighty Super Furry Animals are back again. What’s even more exciting is their debut performance at Festival No.6 as a newly reignited outfit.

Renowned for an energetic and exhilarating live show, the band has become synonymous with their native Wales and are considered a bona fide national treasure. This is exhibited by last year’s special 15th anniversary re-issue of their only entirely Welsh language long player Mwng by Domino Records.

Of all the exports of the 1990s boom in British alternative music, Super Furry Animals always existed slightly to the left of the status quo. Growing into the role of indie’s most electrifying psychedelic eccentrics, the band had a phenomenal and inimitable nine-album, 13-year run which led to NME once declaring, “There’s a case to be argued that SFA are the most important band of the past 15 years.”

Although frontman Gruff Rhys has appeared at No.6 under various guises in previous years, the arrival of Super Furry Animals at Portmeirion is one of the most exciting prospects of No.6 this year. Aside from being icons within the host country, their music and overall creative perspective aligns with the dreamy surrealist reverie which the setting offers. As we gear up for their triumphant homecoming, Rhys shares his thoughts on late-night futurism, his mother tongue and the joys of the extraordinary village. Super Furry Animals are Special Guests on Stage No.6, Sunday

Skewing britpop into something more transcendent and subverting pop into something more exploratory – the band effortlessly crafted their own lane and won over the industry and legions of loyal disciples.

“Playing Festival No.6 is a huge deal for us Super Furry Animals! Three of us grew up in the surrounding mountain villages so it feels like a bit of a homecoming show, as a big part of the audience will be from that area. As festivals go it’s hard to imagine a crazier and more beautiful setting. It’s also located in the heartland of the Welsh language so visitors from afar get not only to experience the insanely fantastical architecture of Clough Williams-Ellis’s surreal village of Portmeirion, and the incredible landscape of Eryri (Snowdonia), but also it’s a chance to hear and see one of Europe’s oldest and most vibrant living languages close up. It’s great for us to get all these amazing bands and DJs coming to the area as not many touring acts usually come here. Equally, it’s a chance for music fans who have travelled far to No.6 to hear some of the local bands. It’s a festival where you can hear great international bands like Hot Chip and also get to see acts like the legendary Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog who are popular in Wales and deserve a bigger stage elsewhere. Alternatively, you can just dance to Andy Votel DJ, as he usually mixes in a few old Welsh language psychedelic numbers and industrial bangers into his set of world wide Utopian futurist music from the past, and joins up all the dots in one go.” - Gruff Rhys, Super Furry Animals 15

MUSIC

Certified legends of their craft and the brightest new talents on the map – every adventure needs a soundtrack and yours awaits you in the form of the No.6 music programme -

BASTILLE Brit-winning indie/electro outfit Bastille arrive with a new album ready to be unveiled. The chart-topping four-piece will be crafting an upbeat set bringing fresh material together with hits like the platinum smash Pompeii and the infectious anthem Of the Night. The word Bastille is synonymous with change – turning the city upside down with the spirit of the new. These leading lights of British music’s next generation will not disappoint. Headline Stage No.6, Friday

RÓISÍN MURPHY Disco pop diva and former half of 90s dance duo Moloko, Róisín Murphy has transformed into a soulful, electrifying bastion of modernity. Murphy’s set at No.6 will be a varied one to say the least. Whether she unleashes her dalliances with soulful disco or her skewed interpretations of Italian pop styles, she will arrive on Portmeirion like a mystical visitor – ready to hypnotise. Stage No.6, Saturday

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS Undoubtedly one of the most influential musicians of the last two decades, Gallagher will close out No.6 with a set made up of anthems which continue to define entire generations. As well as the 70 million albums sold by Oasis, Noel’s two number one albums with the High Flying Birds has made sure his place at the top table of British music remains unchallenged. Under the Portmeirion night sky, this will be a finale for the annals of No.6 history.

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE -

The stratospheric rise of Oasis is the subject of a new film which is released this autumn. We’re delighted to announce we will have one of the first sneak previews of the film at this year’s Festival No.6, alongside a Q&A with director Mat Whitecross. Find out more on page 33. Headlines Stage No.6, Sunday

Emerging from the wintry climes of Toronto in the early 2000s, Broken Social Scene quickly asserted themselves as one of the most dynamic collectives in contemporary alternative music. Their legacy is still unfurling – expect expansive arrangements and huge melodies when Canada’s foremost experimentalists touch down in Portmeirion. Headline the Grand Pavilion, Saturday

MUSIC

ANDREW WEATHERALL Andrew Weatherall is an incredibly important part of the No.6 family. His contributions to the event throughout the years have been emblematic of one of music’s true intrepid elder statesmen – always in tune with some faraway celestial frequency. Having played every single No.6, he shared a few thoughts on visits of the past ahead of 2016… What have been your highlights in the past? I really enjoyed having the piss taken out of me by the poet Mike Garry last year. He was performing St Anthony to the remix that I did, and he started reassuring the crowd at the start, “Don’t worry, it gets going in a bit, it’s a Weatherall remix isn’t it?”, taking the piss out of my penchant for an elongated intro.

You’re playing back-to-back with Justin Robertson, is it the first time the pair of you have ever done that? It’s the first time we’ve played back to back. I would only ever do it with someone whose music I knew and liked, otherwise it could be a bit of a disaster! Are you looking forward to seeing anyone else at this year’s No.6? I fly in time to play with Justin, then the next day I’m interviewing Cosey Fanni Tutti (on the Estuary Stage). When I finish that I’m straight over to do a set (on The Stone Boat). I don’t think I’m going to a get chance to see anyone, I’m being worked like a dog! The Castell Gardens, Saturday and The Stone Boat & The Estuary, Sunday

BLOSSOMS Hailing from Stockport in Greater Manchester and following in the lineage of No.6 headliner Noel Gallagher, Blossoms have very quickly become one of the most exciting prospects in British guitar music. This summer, they are gearing up to unleash their eponymous debut LP onto the world in August and elevate their nostalgic alt-rock stylings to a whole other level. Returning to Portmeirion for 2016, we spoke to the five-piece for a few pre-festival enquiries. Are you guys excited to get back to Portmeirion? We absolutely loved it when we played last year so we can’t wait to be back!

ROOTS MANUVA -

CASSIUS -

In terms of artists who reflect the creative perspective of Festival No.6, very few come close to Roots Manuva. A true musical adventurer, Roots soaked up the sound system culture of London and crafted his own breed of spacey dub-inspired British rap which was unlike anything that came before or followed. Now rightly revered as a true British luminary, Manuva’s bass heavy rumblings are headed for North Wales to give No.6 a touch of compelling spaciousness. The Grand Pavilion, Friday

Landing on Portmeirion in phosphorescent blaze, iconic French electronic duo Cassius will be providing No.6 with a dose of houseinfused disco pandemonium. Throughout their prolific career, the duo have remixed for the likes of Daft Punk, produced for artists like Phoenix and Drake and even been sampled by Jay Z and Kanye. Even with that resumé to their name, they are at their finest in the spotlight where their left field house and electro-pop can belt across our coastal hideaway. The Late Night Pavilion, Saturday

LUCY ROSE Other than No.6, what’s the best adventure music has ever taken you on? Good question, probably to a karaoke bar in Tokyo… Who else are you looking forward to seeing at the event? Noel Gallagher has always been a hero of ours so we’d love to catch him. Also, Echo and The Bunnymen! Stage No.6, Saturday

Lucy Rose released her second studio album Work It Out last summer, after refusing to pair up with songwriters as her label requested. She focused in on her personal sound and her rich, melodious folk reached bold new heights – embracing infectious pop tropes without losing any of her authentic sensibilities. As No.6 draws closer, Rose shared a few thoughts on the adventure ahead. Hoping to discover anything at No.6? I’ve just gone vegetarian so I’m looking for a new signature dish! Good people, great food and some inspiration for my new record.

P.17

Who else are you looking forward to seeing at the event? I’ve never been so excited about a festival! Mainly because I’m so obsessed with M. Ward, I even flew to Amsterdam once to see him play. Oh, and also I can’t wait to see Broken Social Scene, awesome man. Who would be your dream guests for a long table banquet? Probably M. Ward and Broken Social Scene… along with Neil Young… The Grand Pavilion, Sunday

BOWIE

- IS THERE LIFE ON MARS? -

BOWIE REIMAGINED A musical tribute to a timeless visionary organised by our esteemed composer-in-residence with a cast of musicians and vocalists. -

A

s we look forward to the 2016 edition of Festival No.6, one artistic legacy guides our pursuit – the transfixing superhuman magic of David Bowie. As lifelong music fans and true believers in escapism, we had to plan something special for a man who taught us that tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming.

The project begins with our in-house composer. The brilliant Joe Duddell has been No.6’s Composer-in-Residence since the festival began. Fresh from headlining Sydney Opera House with New Order and the Australian Chamber Orchestra this summer, Joe is now preparing some very special performances for this year’s Festival No.6. Joe’s works have been performed around the world, most recently recording with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. He was also asked to orchestrate the now infamous Elbow & The Hallé performance for Manchester International Festival, followed by BBC Philharmonic Presents commissions with Richard Hawley and Nero.

In 2013 Joe was invited by Phillip Glass to take park in the Tibet House Annual Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall, performing his eulogy to Anthony H Wilson with poet Mike Garry and New Order, also arranging for the band’s collaboration with Iggy Pop. He

Manchester Camerata chamber orchestra, to create David Bowie Reimagined, a No.6 tribute to the legendary Bowie, with very special guest vocalists. “I’ve been involved in the festival since the first year”, Joe told us ahead of the event, “I’ve been composer-

“ I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring ” went on to write the string arrangements for New Order’s most recent album Music Complete. For the past four years, Joe has curated a series of intimate Town Hall Sessions in the village with a small classical ensemble and artists such as Daughter, James, Gaz Coombes and Steve Mason. This year, Joe will also be working with the famous

in-residence each year which has involved gigs in the Town Hall with my classical ensemble and artists such as Daughter, East India Youth and Nadine Shah”. For Joe, this ambitious tribute to a British icon is another exciting chapter in his story with No.6, “The Bowie gig is an extension of our approach of reimagining songs. This time it’s just for a much larger orchestra on the main stage with many special guests”.

Few orchestras are better suited to an undertaking like this than Manchester’s celebrated Camerata chamber orchestra. Once dubbed “Britain’s most adventurous orchestra” by The Times, they channel the diverse and inclusionary fabric of their city into performances through collaborations and innovative projects. Last year, they blindfolded their audience in a multisensory experience at the Royal Exchange. As they continue to stretch the boundaries of what an orchestra can achieve – they proceed towards the village to work with Duddell on this most unique of festival attractions. The creativity and innovation powering this project will create less of a eulogy and more of an electrifying celebration. An accomplished composer and a worldclass orchestra take on the music of one of the best songwriters in history with a cast of carefully selected vocalists. Take it from us, it won’t be boring. Bowie Reimagined performance takes place on Stage No.6, Sunday

IN PLACE OF WAR

Festival No.6 is proud to welcome In Place of War back to Portmeirion, to curate two days of international female artists from zones of violence and disruption across the world. -

“ Sharing stories, fostering radicals and fomenting creative resistance ”

I

n Place of War (IPOW) is building a creative movement that allows voices to be heard. IPOW aim to open up new creative spaces; sharing stories, fostering radicals and fomenting creative resistance. From the grassroots up, the IPOW community of artists and collaborators are exchanging their ideas, insights and passions to bring about change in their communities. IPOW academies support artists who have been held back from realising their ambitions through a lack of equipment, facilities and support. The ground breaking creative entrepreneurial programme aims to empower the world’s most marginalised communities to create sustainable organisations and social change through their creativity.

IPOW will bring an inspirational line up of all-female musicians from Brazil, Colombia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and The Middle East to Portmeirion, to share, collaborate, create and perform with the UK’s first black female composer for the Proms, Errollyn Wallen. This will be a unique new work, and we are hugely looking forward to welcoming these inspiring artists to Festival No.6. In Place Of War will run across the weekend at The Village Hall

A.W.A -

ERROLLYN WALLEN -

LEI DI DAI -

Awakhiwe Sibanda, known on stage as A.W.A (African Women Arise) is a 23-year-old female emcee and vocalist from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. She started rapping in 2012 and her first single Wangishiya Lengane was an Ndebele song about teenage pregnancy. She released her second single Ngoneni Na? in 2014 which centred around gender based violence. Looking forward, she is currently working on her album Feminism which is an advocacy for women’s rights. IPOW made a film about A.W.A, which was released by VICE / Noisey and documented her socially conscious outlook on creativity and frank expression. Performs in the Village Hall, Saturday

Errollyn Wallen is a respected singersongwriter of pop music and a composer of the contemporary, The Observer once called her a “renaissance woman of contemporary British music”. Born in Belize, Wallen gave up her training at the Dance Theatre of Harlem to study composition at the universities of London and Cambridge. She founded her own Ensemble X and its motto, “we don’t break down barriers in music, we don’t see any” reflects her free-spirited approach and eclectic musicianship. She has been commissioned by many outstanding music institutions, from the BBC to the Royal Opera House. PORTMEIRION VILLAGE

PORTMEIRION VILLAGE - A L O C AT I O N L I K E N O O T H E R The beating heart of the festival site

THE CENTRAL PIAZZA -

THE ESTUARY STAGE -

THE DOME GALLERY -

THE TOWN HALL -

Perhaps the most surreal and distinctive of all the venues at No.6, this central hub was inspired by an Italian Piazza when the village was first designed. For the festival, it serves precisely that purpose. Much like a forum or a traditional market square, The Central Piazza forms the key centre of activity for Portmeirion and Festival No.6. This year we welcome Dr John Cooper Clarke, revered harpist Catrin Finch, Johnny Vegas and many more performers to this picturesque focal point. It will also play host to the unforgettable scenes of our Saturday afternoon carnival finale.

Lovingly curated by The Social and Faber Social, the Estuary Stage at Festival No.6 is located at the village’s most stunning viewpoint. If you aren’t making use of the view across the River Dwyryd, you can always dangle your legs into the swimming pool and take it easy to the sounds of world-class live music.

Back for another year, Tim Burgess is bringing his Tim Peaks Diner to the standout structure in the Portmeirion vista – the spectacular Portmeirion Dome gallery. Burgess curates Tim Peaks and invites an ensemble of friends, collaborators and special guests along for acoustic performances, DJ sets and talks. The gallery is also the home of No.6’s Welsh language classes and dance sessions – immeasurably good for the soul.

Characteristic of the Jacobean style blending gothic features with more classical architectural trademarks, the Grade II listed town hall is a real representation of the rich history and heritage of Portmeirion village. For the festival, the hall becomes the most intimate and charming of venues. Find out more about the Town Hall Sessions and No.6’s composer-in-residence on page 18 but rest assured, stepping inside the town hall would be a wise way to spend some of your visit.

THE GATEHOUSE -

STONE BOAT -

DINNER AT CLOUGH’S -

Tucked away near the Portmeirion village entrance sits The Gatehouse. At No.6, this venue plays host to a wide range of attractions, performances, cinema screenings and live scores boasting the full breadth of the festival programme. Enjoy live performances of Morricone soundtracks complete with eerie slasher Giallo visuals and many more screenings and Q&As to furnish your complete festival experience. Discover more on page 33.

Journey down to the Portmeirion quayside and discover The Stone Boat. The graceful old trading ketch was originally used by Clough Williams-Ellis as a house boat. After a gale storm, the boat found itself stranded on the island of Ynys Gifften. Clough salvaged what he could and a tribute now stands tall and proud as one of No.6’s most unique and distinctive venues, overlooking the water and the scenic landscape. Rescued, restored, and reclaimed, DJs will be soundtracking your visits to Portmeirion’s storied vessel.

Booking essential, and extremely worthwhile. Enjoy a one-off bespoke dining experience created especially for No.6. Three extraordinary menus which have been put together exclusively for the event by high profile, Michelin star chefs can be perused and enjoyed on the White Horses Promenade – a unique respite from the event’s weekend-long festivities. Meet the chefs on page 34.

- CHOOSE LIFE -

IRVINE WELSH Scotland’s most visceral author sets his sights on Portmeirion -

“He’s one of Britain’s greatest songwriters.”

I

t was somewhat unsurprising when Irvine Welsh shared this opinion on No.6 headliner Noel Gallagher when we spoke with him ahead of the event in September. While they may have excelled in totally different disciplines, they are – in many ways – kindred spirits. Both approach their craft with a sincere honesty, both are innately in tune with their background and both have achieved a cult following through unique vision and an inimitable writing style.

Welsh, the writer responsible for iconic British literary works like Trainspotting, The Acid House and Filth visited No.6 for the first time last year and caught the bug almost immediately. “It’s a festival like no other”, he recalls, “completely unique and in the most idyllic setting – an art deco Italianiate village in Wales”. No stranger to the perils of the British summertime, Welsh is confident that Portmeirion’s charm runs deeper than just sunshine and still skies, “Even when you don’t get the weather, it’s still impossible to believe that you’re in the UK. It’s a stunning, beautiful, intimate experience and there is nothing else like it.”

Welsh is arriving this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Trainspotting – Danny Boyle’s seminal film adaptation of his debut novel where urban Scottish met conventional literature and an unfamiliar kind of youthful energy was succinctly captured in writing. Welsh has remained a controversial figure ever since the early days. He’s a figure whose novels, stage and screen plays, novellas and short stories have proved difficult for more unadventurous literary critics to assimilate, a difficulty made only more noticeable by Welsh’s continued commercial success. He is a perfect fit for No.6 – a creative who understands the importance of adventure, no-holds-barred candour and piercingly sharp humour. Reflecting more on his first visit last year, Welsh identified his time with a British trailblazer as a highlight. “I enjoyed my chat with Bernard Sumner about his life and music. I’ve been a New Order fan before they were New Order, and he was refreshingly forthright, candid and witty about his experiences”. His first-hand experiences of real-life struggles and sociopolitical challenges have left him with an overarching authenticity

into the No.6 family – praying for an Iggy Pop headline set like the one featured in Trainspotting. “I’d love to see him tear it up at No.6!”. We’re in no position to make any promises for the years to come. All we know for sure is that this returning visitor will be worth listening out for. Appearing in The Gatehouse, Saturday and The Central Piazza, Sunday

which runs through all his work. As legends of British art and culture go, Welsh continues to resonate with generations because of that unflinching honesty – a socially conscious voice dedicated to presenting original and exciting pieces of work. Welsh will be bringing his own unique British perspective to Portmeirion to contribute to the festival’s atmosphere of ideas and language. He’s fully inaugurated

“ “It’s completely unique… and in the most idyllic setting” ”

- OUTSIDER PERSPECTIVE -

SARA PASCOE The award-winning comedian and writer talks festivals, feminism and the written word -

W

Do you think the internet has changed people’s perception of writing as a creative process? It’s great for research – all that information right there for me and it’s so easy to navigate. On the other hand, I worry that I’m so deluged with other people’s opinions so it’s difficult to find clarity. If you get up in the morning and the first thing you do is check your phone, that affects your day. If you talk to people and read books, that will make you behave in a different way.

e’re thrilled to be welcoming award-winning standup, writer and actor Sara Pascoe into the fold for Festival No.6 this year. She arrives in Portmeirion to talk about Animal, her debut book, an imaginative, funny and poignant exploration of feminism, sexuality and the female body in the modern world. Having long supported the encouragement of open dialogue and opportunity among young writers and creatives, we spoke to Sara ahead of No.6 about self-discovery and the importance of opening the conversation.

How has your relationship with the concept of gender changed since writing the book? I thought afterwards that it’s a bit like understanding gravity – you can understand that it’s a force and you can’t help it but that

How did the concept for the book come about? It came out of an Edinburgh show which was a combination of meeting someone and falling in love and reading this book about monogamy maybe not being the natural state

“ It’s always the outliers, people who see things from the outside, they make the best work. ” of human beings. The combination of those two things started me off on this journey of thinking about evolution and love. I wanted to write about women in particular – female sexuality and the female body.

doesn’t mean it hurts any less when you fall down. You can’t resist just because you know.

How was the process different to writing comedy? I had a lot more space and time. It was a lot more time consuming but I didn’t have that pressure of finding a punchline. I could be interesting and talk in a way which is far too self-indulgent for a live show!

Is it important to you to share your experiences and talk about writing? For me, it’s especially important with young people. I think because I came from a working class background, I always want to break that bubble of people thinking there’s anything magical about artistry, creativity and getting on television. It’s always the outliers, people who see things from the outside, they make the best work.

What’s been more nerve-wracking, writing it or talking about it? I didn’t really think about the content of the book until it was released. I hadn’t been going on the internet – that’s a really easy door to close. In person, I’ve had some really fascinating conversations with women – mothers, daughters and people talking about their experiences. I’ve met with book groups and it’s so amazing because me being open has led to other people being open.

So what should people expect from you at No.6? I’ll try and do a short stand-up but then it will be questions really! It’s always better when people shape what they are interested in and share their responses. What’s so fantastic about these cross-discipline festivals is that you can almost fall into a tent and end up learning about something completely different. Appearing on the Estuary Stage, Saturday

ARTS

- BEYOND MUSIC -

ARTS & CULTURE Nourish your mind and explore a world of entertainment which stretches far beyond the realm of mere sound. Spectaculars, screenings, comedy and cabaret – a comprehensive programme of art and culture lies ahead -

JOHNNY VEGAS -

Johnny Vegas is one of Britain’s best loved performers. His seminal early appearances are the stuff of legend, with his wilfully shambolic and dangerously out-of-control stage persona capable of producing moments of spontaneous magic that are the very essence of what makes live comedy such an enduringly exciting medium. More recently he has moved into dramatic acting and directing. This is Johnny’s first No.6 and he will be making several appearances across the weekend, including his own stand-up show and a Q&A with Ricky Tomlinson. The Gatehouse, Saturday

DR JOHN COOPER CLARKE -

JONATHAN MEADES -

CATRIN FINCH -

We’re delighted to welcome the one and only Dr John Cooper Clarke back to Festival No.6. Poet, movie star, rock star, comedian, social and cultural commentator, Dr John Cooper Clarke is a key orator of British society, name checked by everyone from Alex Turner to Jarvis Cocker, Plan B to Steve Coogan. Clarke’s performance on the Central Piazza in Portmeirion back in 2013 was a true highlight of that year’s No.6, so we’re delighted to welcome him back to the village. The Central Piazza, Saturday

The brilliant broadcaster, author and filmmaker Jonathan Meades will be making his debut appearance at Festival No.6 this year. This brilliant picture shows a 15-yearold Meades on holiday at Portmeirion in the 60s: “It was taken in early August 1962,” remembers Meades. “I was 15. My last holiday with my parents. It was the week Marilyn Monroe died. I heard The Crystals’ Uptown for the first time and bought Absolute Beginners.” Imaginative, passionate and creative – we’re thrilled Jonathan is returning to the village 54 years after his first visit. The Gatehouse, Saturday

This year marks the first visit for the UK’s finest harpist and a truly brilliant Welsh musician to No.6 for the first time. Catrin started playing the harp at the age of 5. She was the youngest member of the National Youth Orchestra to play at The Proms and was appointed Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales. Last year she released her own album Tides, and toured Patagonia with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Welsh settlement there. The Central Piazza, Friday

DBC PIERRE -

SHAUN RYDER -

CASSETTEBOY -

RICKY TOMLINSON -

It’s said that everyone has a book inside them – but where inside does it live? And how do we release it? When DBC Pierre burst onto the literary scene in 2003 he arrived with no particular literary experience and no writing education. Part memoir, part reflection and part practical guide, DBC Pierre’s Release The Bats: Writing Your Way Out Of It invests everything he learned the hard way in a book aimed at anyone with a love of ideas, reading, and the magical act of communication on (and off) the page. A welcome arrival to the No.6 programme. The Estuary, Saturday

A real diamond of the No.6 bill for 2016, the leader of Happy Mondays and Black Grape, Shaun Ryder heads to Portmeirion to talk for the first time about his unique approach to lyricism. The late, great Tony Wilson famously declared Shaun Ryder was “on a par with W.B Yeats” and he’s also been deservedly lauded as ‘the Salford Dylan’. Ryder will be discussing his inimitable handle on the English language, his rock’n’roll career and his brilliant, unforgettable lyrics, which are to be published for the first time by Faber & Faber this autumn. The Gatehouse, Sunday

Cassetteboy are a British electronic music and comedy duo whose political and celebrity pastiches have scored millions and millions of hits on YouTube with their no holds barred clips over the past few years. For Festival No.6, Cassetteboy will create their own hilarious audiovisual disco, with the usual suspects from the worlds of celebrity and politics translated in to a big, stupid, messy festival party. Be seeing you down the front. The Gatehouse, Saturday

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the wonderful Ricky Tomlinson to Festival No.6 for the first time. Ricky will be in conversation with Johnny Vegas about Ragged, the film based on Ricky’s true experiences as a political prisoner on hunger strike in the early 70s, when his life was changed forever by reading Robert Tressel’s The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, when he was given it by the prison governor. Q magazine declared DJ Yoda one of the ‘Ten DJs to see before you die’ so we’re hugely excited to welcome him to Festival No.6 for an exclusive special edition of DJ Yoda Goes To The Sci-Fi Movies. 2016 marks 40 years since Doctor Who was filmed at Portmeirion and 50 years since filming of The Prisoner started, so at No.6, DJ Yoda will celebrate both of these local sci-fi anniversaries with a one-off audio-visual spectacular. The Gatehouse, Friday

A thrilling addition to the arts programme for No.6 this year – award-winning comic, celebrated writer and regular TV panelist, Aisling Bea has become a leading light in British comedy thanks to her distinctive, motormouth delivery and whip-smart writing. As her ascent continues apace, she will be bringing her expressive energy and frank musings to the village. The Gatehouse, Saturday

TIM BURGESS’ SIX PICKS FOR FESTIVAL N0.6

Having performed under many guises across the years, British alternative luminary Tim Burgess is an honorary member of the Festival No.6 family, this year curating the Tim Peaks programme housed at The Dome Gallery. Looking ahead to 2016’s activities at Portmeirion, Tim shared six of his picks for the special weekend. 1. Brythoniaid Male Voice Choir The Brythoniaid Male Voice Choir fit into Portmeirion like part of the landscape, all 60 of them! 2. A Certain Ratio As relevant and vital as ever but with a back catalogue that seems to be older than the band members look. Always a joyful experience watching them! 3. Beds In Parks At this very moment they are my favourite new band – hints of Mazzy Star and some C86 sensibilities but doing their own thing too. 4. Tim Burgess and Peter Gordon So I have a bit of a dilemma – if I recommend that you come and see myself and Peter Gordon, it might seem a little crass and big headed. Then again if I don’t, it might seem that I’m saying I wouldn’t recommend that you came to see us. I’m definitely saying you should. We’ve made an album together and I think you’ll like it. 5. Cabbage Once seen never forgotten. Their live shows are like a firework display when you don’t quite know where the fireworks are. 6. John Cooper Clarke How could you not watch John Cooper Clarke when you are in the same place as he? Never before or since has bleak social commentary been so hilarious. All hail Doctor John Cooper Clarke. Tim Burgess performs The Estuary Stage, Saturday

The 60-strong choir has become an essential component of the No.6 experience. SPECTACLES

- A TRUE SIGHT -

PARADES & SPECTACLES A Portmeirion rite of passage awaits your involvement, play your part in a stunningly bright spectacle through the village streets -

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LA COMPAGNIE DES QUIDAMS Founded in 1994 by its artistic director, Jean-Baptiste Duperray, the international Company Quidams created more than a dozen performances in over 40 countries, from Europe to Australia via Asia and South America. They bring together 20 artists and technicians from different creative backgrounds – theatre, dance, music, circus. or any other pursuit. La Compagnie des Quidams is based in the Étrez village in the north of the Ain, France. Founder and stage director JeanBaptiste Duperray once shared his thoughts on the company. They are translated below. “We see our creations as an invitation to dream, to unleash the imaginary, a space of freedom where everyone, through the proposed images, can write his own history. Language is made of gestures, dances, music, silence, language meets all cultures.”

CARNIVAL No.6 -

LA COMPAGNIE DES QUIDAMS -

ILLUMINATED PARADE & TORCHLIT PROCESSION -

Carnival No.6 has become one of the highlights of Saturday at the festival every year. A huge riot of colourful costumes and music weaves its way through the village on Saturday afternoon from 3pm. Expect sequinned samba headdresses, marching bands, flamboyant feathery backpacks and glittering gowns. Festival goers will have the opportunity to sign up in advance to take part and we have even more costumes available for free hire this year. These must be pre-booked prior to the festival, but there’s no charge. Or if you are more of a voyeur than a peacock, simply find yourself a great vantage point, and watch the amazing carnival parade pass by.

A new invitation to dream… a passing dream. A procession of images which begins with bizarrely dressed, sciencefiction Venetians. In the space of 30 seconds the world changes into an atmosphere of dreamlike images, the characters transform into fantastic luminous horses. The “man of tracks”, lends himself to games, to jousting, to the choreographies of this fantastic herd. An original musical creation accompanies the show in the symphonic universe of legends. The images of the journey are changing, dynamic, poetical, in metamorphosis. No words but sounds, no barriers just musical atmospheres – this is a dream that passes by, a fantastic cavalade.

The nightly torchlit and illuminated processions have become a real tradition at Festival No.6 over the years, and every year we look to make them bigger and better and add a new twist. Last year’s Grace Jones Mirrorball parade was a brilliant precursor to her headline slot. Each night the processions start in the village and make their way to the main arena in time for the headline act. We have some really special touches planned for this year’s edition, which will be announced through the website shortly. Any festival goer can sign up free to be part of the glowing spectacles, and we provide everything you need to be a part of the quintessential No.6 experience.

THE SAD + BEAUTIFUL WORLD OF SPARKLEHORSE AND Q&A -

Everyone at Festival No.6 was truly saddened to hear about the passing of the legendary Howard Marks. Hailing from South Wales, Howard was one of the country’s finest counterculture heroes and we were honoured to welcome him to No.6 last year. We’ll be raising a toast to Howard this year. We will also be showing a preview of the new Howard Marks film The Real Mr Nice. Howard granted filmmakers access to his highly organised and extraordinarily eclectic personal archive. The Real Mr Nice shines a light on sides of Howard’s life and personality not previously revealed to the media – his hobbies, academic endeavours, family life, friendships and 1970s career in music production.

We’re thrilled to confirm an exclusive preview of the new Oasis film at this year’s festival, alongside a Q&A with director Mat Whitecross. Noel and Liam Gallagher star in the documentary which charts their rise to fame from the early days to the fastest selling debut in UK history. Noel said of the film, “The love and the vibe and the passion and the rage and the joy that are coming from the crowd, if anything, that’s what Oasis was”, while Liam commented, “Oasis was definitely like a Ferrari, great to look at, great to drive and it will fucking spin out of control every now and again.” What better way to prepare yourself for a headline set from the mighty Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds?

Introducing the brilliant Cinescora to No.6 for two special performances – Morricone in Love and Morricone Giallo. In a fusion of live music and cinema, Italian ‘Giallo’ films will provide a sublime backdrop as Fiona Staniland and her band explore the haunting wordless female activities of Edda Dell’Orso and the psychedelic lounge trippiness of Ennio Morricone’s cult erotic thriller scores of 1968-72. Expect a trippy mix of hypnotic jazz rhythms, bossa beats, soaring soprano and avant garde expressionism – all to a stunning backdrop of the original films. Featuring Fiona Staniland on vocals, Nick Ramm on keyboards, Jon Gingell on guitars, Gerry Hunt on brass, Tom Mason on bass and Chris Preece on drums.

No.6 is proud to present a special screening of The Sad + Beautiful World of Sparklehorse, the magical film about Mark Linkous, singersongwriter and founder of the alternative rock band Sparklehorse, along with a Q&A with director Alex Crowton. A cult and hugely influential figure in the alternative music scene, the critically-acclaimed Linkous had a dramatic life that saw him battle with drug and alcohol addiction, paralysis, and debilitating depression that resulted in his eventual suicide. The Sad + Beautiful World of Sparklehorse mines Mark’s life and music and navigates the sacrifices and highs and lows of his art.

DINNER AT CLOUGH’S A culinary experience like no other createdespecially for Festival No.6. Three bespoke menus curated by Michelin star chefs. Your table awaits... -

eframe your understanding of festival eating by treating yourself to Dinner at Clough’s – No.6’s very own temple of taste and cuisine. Food will play an integral part of your experience in Portmeirion whatever the weather so why not elevate your palette to the next level and get a taste of some bonafide world-class dining options. The concept is simple – premier chefs who we selected as carefully as our music and art headliners, a dining space fit for our esteemed visitors and three one-off menus designed specifically for the temporary residents of the village. Reserve your place and invest in a festival experience unlike any other.

AIDEN BYRNE “ At festivals such as No.6, the clientele is a little more discerning. Spending three days indulging in the niceties of life doesn’t exclude eating good food! ” After a tremendous turn at last year’s festival, we are delighted to welcome Aiden Byrne back into the kitchen for 2016. In 2002, Byrne became the youngest chef to ever receive a Michelin star at the tender age of 22. Since then, the prodigious restauranteur has maintained a status as one of the country’s most distinguished and dedicated chefs. “What I love about No.6 is that I feel like I belong there”, Byrne told us ahead of his Clough’s takeover, “I’m a 44 year old man who has a passion for food, music and art – this festival has all of these in abundance!”. The No.6 experience functions on an ethos of indulgence and quality – a spirit Byrne emulates through his own work. “At festivals such as No.6, the clientele is a little more discerning. Spending three days indulging in the niceties of life doesn’t exclude eating good food!”.

34

Like a kind of imaginative traditionalist, Bryne’s philosophy is fuelled by refinement and a focus on familiar flavours. “I’m a passionate man when it comes to food and I was brought up professionally in kitchens that concentrated on classical flavour marriages.” Now over a decade on from that historic Michelin star, Aiden’s passion has only grown as he’s widened his palette and worked on his craft. “My desire to please people and make them happy is only getting stronger and stronger. It is an affair that will never die.” Seasoned host, award-winning chef and true patron of No.6, Aiden is looking forward to the bespoke offering he will bring to Clough’s. “Our job is to help enhance the experience” he tells us, with his sights set once again on Portmeirion, “No.6 is a special place and if they will have me, I will return year after year.”

If you’re craving dumplings, kimchi and other nostalgic east-Asian recipes, then Dorshi have got you sorted.

The sudden craving for a fish finger buttie is often difficult to shake off. It consumes you and simply must be satisfied. If such an appetite strikes at Festival No.6 then head over to Fabulous Fishfinger Co in the Street Food Village. You can choose from traditional classics such as cod fingers with homemade tartare sauce or the slightly more adventurous salmon fingers with wasabi mayo.

Le Bao bring a modern twist to Taiwan’s traditional Gua Bao - a street food staple made from a fluffy soft steamed bun and traditionally filled with braised meat. At Le Bao, buns are made with soy milk and rice flour and stuffed with a variety of fresh and bold ingredients inspired by a diverse selection of cuisines. The buns are gluten free and all fillings and sauces are made from free range and locally sourced ingredients.

There is nothing quite like the smoky aroma of a Southern Texan barbecue to complement a summer evening. Sometimes, however, we can’t travel to the US just to experience it. Luckily Smokestak is bringing their Texan imported triple axled, 4.5 tonne custom-built barbecue smoker to the Street Food Village. With a focus on slow-smoked US grade cuts of meat, this barbecue has been hailed as the best this side of the pond.

FOOD

“ A mix of cuisines inspired by styles and cultures from all over the world. ”

STAKE HAUS -

FUNDI PIZZA -

HAPPY MAKI -

THE WHOLE CHEESE -

The hallowed cut of meat. When cooked to perfection, steak is one the purest carnivorous pleasures known to man. STAKE Haus will be serving up premium steaks all weekend long. With a choice of French fries, sweet potato fries, courgette fries and homemade sauces all on offer, it is a match made in a meat-eating paradise.

Fundi. n. person skilled in maintaining or making specialised equipment. [Swahili]. fundo n. – anatomic nomenclature for bottom i.e. crust [Italian]… Fundi Pizza, mobile wood powered pizza made with hand-built equipment.

Anyone that’s tried to stop eating fish will be all too aware of the difficulty to find vegan friendly sushi. Funny, considering that sushi actually means “seasoned rice”, not raw fish. Fortunately Happy Maki’s freshly rolled to order sushi is rectifying that. Vegan, healthy, and bursting with fusion fillings, top picks such as the Hoisin “Duck” will please even the biggest of carnivores. The menu is designed with you and the environment in mind, with all packaging compostable. They even donate a meal to children in poverty for every wrap that they sell.

Cheese, the whole cheese and nothing but the cheese. We’re thrilled to be welcoming fellow cheese fanatics, The Whole Cheese, to the Street Food Village. Providing a delicious range of artisan and organic West Country cheese, these cheese missionaries will be serving up a variety of rarebits, ploughmans, and picnic boxes all weekend.

Brothers Charlie and Rory Nelson are real artisans. They built their own wood-fired pizza oven from scratch and hit the streets making authentic, Neapolitan pizzas in 2013. They try to keep all aspects of their set-up inhouse and source all materials and ingredients responsibly. A fully hand-crafted pizza.

WOODLANDS

- A WORLD OF ADVENTURE -

THE WOODLANDS If you go down to the woods today... -

LOST IN THE WOODS STAGE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PRS FOR MUSIC If you go down to the woods at No.6, you’re in for a real delight. Lose yourself in a swell of funk and scuzzy garage rock all presented in partnership with PRS for Music. The stage is tucked away amidst 70 acres of woodland for you to explore and discover. Catch appearances from rising names like Beach Baby and Trembling Bells alongside seasoned pros like Bill Ryder Jones and Crazy P. With a host of other attractions and discotheques all situated deep among the greenery, a trip into the woods never seemed more appealing.

AUDIO FARM PRESENTS THE DUGOUT A more back-to-basics approach to alfresco raving, Mancunian party-starting extraordinaries Audio Farm take the reins on The Dugout. One of the best loved venues on the No.6 map, this secret party in the woods will have Audio Farm residents playing across the weekend to keep the forest bouncing. This one isn’t on the map – located right in the heart of the woodland wonderland so move fast and search long and hard – blink and you’ll miss them.

THE VIRGIN TRAINS VILLAGE LIMITS -

GOTTWOOD PRESENTS THE TANGLED WOODS -

From sunrise to sunfall, The Village Limits in association with Virgin Trains will host underground DJs and experienced selectors all weekend long. You can join in the fun so long as you find it, out of sight in the middle of the stunning Chinese Lake.

Positioned under the incredible natural canopy created by the tangled branches – this pop-up woodland rave is another prime example of Portmeirion’s supernatural beauty. Hosted by our neighbours from Gottwood festival, this promises to be a glowing gem in the nightlife programme. If you’ve been to No.6 before and never made it this far into the wood then you don’t know what you’re missing. If 2016 is going to be your first year – this spot should be high up on your list of priorities.

38

THE GROVE The woodlands offer all – release, mindexpanding exploration and, now, a hub of creative expression. Brand new for the 2016 edition of No.6, a weekend-long programme of scene-setting storytelling and rousing spoken word will be housed in The Grove. There’s a curious and intriguing quality to this area of Portmeirion already so allow well versed wordsmiths to guide your discovery.

PRS for Music is proud to be partnering with Festival No. 6 this year presenting the Lost in the Woods stage and a panel celebrating the 40th anniversary of punk

CELEBRATIONS

- FESTIVAL No.6 -

SPECIAL OCCASIONS Catch these unique happenings if you can. -

THE PRISONER The official Prisoner appreciation society, Six of One will be re-enacting one of the most classic and iconic scenes from the show at No.6 – the human chess game. For fans of the programme – this reenactment in the heart of Portmeirion will be the closest you can come to entering the unsettling and strange cosmos of The Village. For those who have never seen the show, this will be a perfect introduction into the plight of the bewildered Prisoner.

DR WHO AT PORTMEIRION 40TH ANNIVERSARY 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of Dr Who being filmed at Portmeirion. The first serial of the 14th season of the classic British science fiction series was called The Masque of Mandragora, and was broadcast in four weekly parts from 4-25 September 1976. The weekend of Festival No.6 falls exactly 40 years after the first episode of the Dr Who Portmeirion serial was broadcast, and we’ll be announcing details of our own Dr Who anniversary celebration closer to the date. Watch this space, and remember, somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, somewhere else, the tea’s getting cold.

UNIVERSAL WORKS COLLABORATION Festival No.6 and contemporary menswear house Universal Works are collaborating for the second year, creating limited edition pieces to purchase on site. As an independent retailer, Universal Works perfectly align with the ideology of this event. They approach their work with a playfulness and creativity which manifests itself in a sophisticated and refined range of garments. Items on sale include a one off Bakers Jacket, essential festival bag, UW x No.6 socks and many more.

Fortunately, we’ve got a comprehensive programme of yoga sessions and meditation practices lined up to keep you mindful and measured as you explore Portmeirion.

MERMAID SPA -

PADDLE BOARDING -

SWIMMING -

THE VOLVO SWEDISH SPA -

Recuperation and rejuvenation are both readily available for you at No.6. You’ll be hard pressed to find a retreat for restoration quite as efficacious as The Portmeirion Mermaid Spa. They specialise in bespoke treatments which are blended and prepared for each individual on a client-to-client basis. The work of the Spa also benefits from a dose of that indefinable Portmeirion magic – a chance to pamper and party in coastal climes.

Returning for 2016, the very best way to experience the views of Portmeirion’s stunning coastline is on a paddle board during one of No.6’s free sessions. In collaboration with Volvo, this is a real chance to take a diversion from the festival programme and wade through even more tranquil waters. Booking essential but totally free of charge.

If you’re in need of an alternate route to peacefulness at No.6 then make your way to the Portmeirion swimming pool. Aside from being one of the most scenic spots on the No.6 map, the pool is situated close enough to the Estuary Stage to soundtrack your swimming with our brilliant bill of live acts.

Aligning with our overall mission of blending natural beauty with communal experience and taking fun and enjoyment seriously, we’ve worked with Volvo to bring a Scandinavian-style spa to the Welsh coastline in order to make No.6 even more beneficial for the soul. Feel free to recline, repose and recover in this mineral paradise of wellness and good health.

GETTING TO FESTIVAL NO.6 -

DISABLED ACCESS -

As with any secluded paradise, preserving the natural beauty of the land is of the utmost importance. With that in mind, in order to protect the beautiful surroundings of Portmeirion, we operate a Park & Ride system. The car park is approximately 4 miles from the site, and will take around 2 to 3 minutes on one of our frequent shuttle buses. Alternatively, coach options can be found on the No.6 website alongside campervan information and the addresses of local caravan parks. There are also options for you to extend your stay in the coastal paradise – a smart option considering visitors’ tendency to not want the magic to end…

If you would like more information on the access facilities at the event or to get in touch please email: access@festivalnumber6.com or write to us at: Ground Control Production LTD (FN6 Access), 3rd Floor, 14 Little Lever Street, Manchester, M1 1HR.
