THE LIGHT IN WINTER

festival program

1

Welcome to Festival of Voices 2013 The light in winter Festival of Voices celebrates voice in all its forms, providing a platform for singers, celebrities, choirs, cabaret artists, performers, actors, speakers and thinkers. The Festival brings the best talent from around the world to Hobart to work with and entertain local artists and audiences. It’s a bright star shining on the city of Hobart for ten days. Light is to the eyes what music is to the soul, and this year’s festival will be a feast for both.

Be enchanted by a program packed full of one-off events both intimate and breathtaking, hold-in-your-hand moments for artists and audiences, celebrities and school kids, experiences as bright and startling as a shooting star, which melt like a handmade snowflake, unique and never to be repeated in exactly the same way. Its flavour is personal. Its texture is soft and accessible. Its taste is fresh and feel-good. The Festival kicks off with its traditional spectacular opening night at Salamanca: a family friendly, warm and fuzzy fireball of entertainment

including Christine Anu and a 300 children’s choir singing My Island Home. Twinkle in the trees and music in the air; it’s the perfect start to the Festival, an evening of enchantment which branches off to the everpopular Voicebox at City Hall, Coupling in the Barn, pairing food and music at Rosny Barn, and Handmade at the Peacock. The night blurs into ten days of joy, a packed program of the magical and unmissable. Iconic events, major concerts, pop up performances and more: a plethora of choice and voice.

L o r d M ayo r o f H o b a r t The City of Hobart is proud to continue its support of the Festival of Voices program this year through the much lauded Voicebox cabaret performance series and the exciting Kringle celebration in North Hobart. Festival of Voices allows our community to participate and to observe brilliant voice talent and creativity from around Tasmania and the world. Council’s support reflects a commitment to the development of quality events and attractions in our city during the winter months as well as for the cultural sector through the new Hobart City Council cultural strategy – Creative Hobart. What better way to engage with our beautiful city than through cabaret, concerts, choirs, workshops and community events. The extensive program offers a diverse way for audiences to celebrate the human voice at various locations across Hobart. I encourage everyone to enjoy and participate in this excellent program of events provided for our community.

Welcome to the Festival of Voices for 2013, one of Tasmania’s best-loved events and a bright light in Tasmania’s winter season.

The 2013 Festival marks a milestone on a stellar artistic trajectory.

Third time lucky. Third time’s a charm!

mp

Now in its ninth year, the Festival delights visitors and locals alike with an intense celebration of the voice in its many forms. This year’s event features artists from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, all bringing their distinct expertise and skills to perform in Hobart. The Festival continues to evolve, crossing the Derwent River to Clarence for the first time this year with an event celebrating two of life’s essential ingredients: music and food. There is so much to look forward to in this year’s Festival – choirs, solo artists and ensembles performing a capella, gospel, music theatre, and cabaret in venues ranging from historic buildings to concert halls. The Festival also provides important opportunities for local and visiting artists to add to their repertoire and further develop their skills through workshops and masterclasses. The Tasmanian Government is proud to support the Festival of Voices and I encourage you to get involved and enjoy this wonderful event.

Voicebox, last year’s stand-out hit, is bigger and brighter this year. A partnership with Hobart City Council, it’s a sublime, sexy, seedy, cabaret of stars. Get in early. So many shows were sold-out last year, book early and book often. Building on Kris Stewart’s success last year, we are offering the best of international, national and local talent. And in turn the Festival’s success converts directly into economic impact for Tasmania. The 2012 Festival generated a 69% increase in total attendances, with a leap of 143% in ticket sales. It contributed $8.2 million in economic impact to the state – the equivalent of 52 full-time jobs – and a 15-fold return on government investment. Now that’s a productivity gain! This year we build on the voice – of song, of storytelling, of new ideas – of Tasmania. The Festival of Ideas this year builds towards maturity with its own program following Festival of Voices. We welcome Paul Kooperman as General Manager and while we wish Kris Stewart well in his new role, we’re delighted to announce he will again be curating Voicebox in 2014. This is a watershed year. Enjoy every minute.

In three short years, I have witnessed the growth of FOV from being in its formative stages to a festival full of body and spirit, mature and capable of achieving significant impact. Three festivals down the track, it’s been such a pleasure putting the program together, given the experience of the past two years and the terrific success of 2012, plus the development of some highly innovative programming and the introduction of new key staff member: Paul Kooperman, our new General Manager. I remember having early conversations with Hobart City Council pondering something we could do to increase audiences and engagement. We wanted something surprising, something ‘out of the box’ and the result is Voicebox. And look how it’s developed, now an icon of the Hobart cultural landscape. But there is still more to do. Ideas keep coming, partnerships develop. It’s an exciting prospect to take what we’ve achieved, all of us – from the staff to the Board to the partners, supporters, venues and audiences – and plan an even more satisfying experience for everyone involved. We’re thrilled to unveil a program like nothing you’ve ever heard, seen or experienced.

first light

Opening night for Festival of Voices has become a tradition in Hobart you don’t want to miss, an event people talk about months after. Based on the ‘bonfire event’ Firesong of 2012, First Light is Hobart’s free music spectacular. In 2013, Festival of Voices will use sound and light to show off the very best of Salamanca and our first light local and national talent.

When Christine Anu and 300 children sing My Island Home, you’ll melt and be transfixed by the twinkle in the trees, the glow of mountains under moonlight, reflections through candlelight, families and fires. It’s a warm community hug you need to experience to believe. Come at 5.30 for a 6pm start and grab a candle or laser for a fully interactive community experience.

major concerts As the Festival grows, it has become an increasingly attractive performance opportunity for talent from across the country and across the globe. A highlight of the Festival is our major concert series, a big draw card which provides an exciting entry for audiences, serving up headliner shows and artists whilst inviting them to dig a little deeper and taste other lesser known, but equally exciting, festival offerings.

Featuring an all-star band led by accomplished Australian musician and producer Stu Hunter, the show features a selection of McDermott’s original songs from his early DAAS days through to his current TV career. Is Paul Sings finally an expression of the ‘real’ Paul McDermott?

Following on from its sell out season at the 2012 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, acclaimed singer Johanna Allen has collated a series of songs that reflect her own personal mixtape.

Direct from a smash hit season in Edinburgh, Ali’s new show Alchemy is inspired by her influences: Opera, Burlesque, and trashy 80’s pop divas. Expect to hear unique mash-ups and genre-defying versions of Madonna, Salt ‘n Pepa, Radiohead and Elvis like they were sung by a 40’s siren in a Las Vegas club.

From Blondie to Brel, Allen takes you through 80’s classics, classical arias, jazz standards and theatre hits, all encased in soprano cheekiness with a voice described by critics as ‘pure bliss... achingly beautiful and capable of any musical genre’. Mixtape is a musical journey from an artist that loves The Pixies as much as Puccini.

Ali is one of this country’s most versatile singers and her incredible vocal range and entertaining and emotive performance style brings a truly individual flavour to some of your most favourite songs.

Sirens is a lyrical and musical journey through longing, light and love. Over nine settings, Sirens is a journey of both the voyeur and the voyager. Through a series of song poems, a husband watches his wife dress, a traveller drinks to the young in Greenwich Village, a parent aches at dawn, a kitchen is observed after the morning rush, a heart begins to open, sketches are made for the empty page. Sirens is an exquisite composition written by internationally acclaimed songwriter Rowan Smith who for 18 years had made his home in Tasmania. Special guest star vocalist is Philippa Nihill from the Underground Lovers.

Proud supporters of Festival of Voices 2013

A matching pair of magnificently disgruntled divas collide in a tuneful tantrum about losing yourself in the labyrinths of love and life. Cheerfully corralled by musical director Iestyn Parry, Tasmania’s own Di Richards and Miz Ima Starr keep bitterness at bay with a barrage of sisterly temperament and song. 20th and 21st century composers from the showbiz capitols of the world – and yes, that includes Hobart – provide an unpredictable musical roadmap through two parallel lives that have taken the bitter with the sweet… and relished every morsel!

a bird does not sing

because it has an answer tess hansen

Inspired by Hansen’s favourite ancient Chinese proverb ‘A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song’, this night of song covers stories of disloyalty, heart ache, provocative memories, yearning for independence and companionship. Coinciding with the vibe of an intimate soiree, it is a performance that presents Tess Hansen’s original songs and offers an hour of vulnerability, poetry and grace embellished with beads and feathers.

If they made an album, Kylie would be the A-side and Dannii, the B-side. The C-Side is the story of their unremarkable younger sister, Erin. A one-hour, one-woman comic cabaret about the ‘nearly-ran’ who never ran, featuring a swag of classic Kylie and Dannii hits, sung by Erin (Lizzie Moore) from her own unique perspective. The C-Side is an eye-opening staged-biopic of an extraordinary life unled, revealing untold insight into a celebrity sibling who never existed, based on an entirely untrue story.

Eight of Tasmania’s finest songwriters have been handpicked to present exciting original works reflecting their life in Tasmania. Stories from a Rwandan refugee who now calls Tasmania home to a Hobart girl who took her guitar to New York in search of her dreams. Each artist explores what it means to be ‘Tasmanian’ through the medium of song. Artists include Jude Elliot, John Coleman, Harrison Manton, Annick Audrey, Tané, Mel Brown, Georgia Males and Andrew Jordon.

Scores of young voices will fill the air for the Festival’s Schools Concert. This is a meeting of the minds and voices that will shape the future of singing in Tasmania. Primary schoolaged children from Hobart and surrounds have come together in the months before Festival of Voices 2013 – learning, sharing and rehearsing for a grand performance at the Farrell Centre especially for you.

Combine a beautiful mix of Australian queer choirs with the Festival’s Out & Loud Workshop Choir, add a few secret surprises to the world-famous art of this extraordinary building – and you have one glorious rainbow of a concert.

Under the direction of renowned music educator and conductor, Claire Preston, and the much loved music education advocate and teacher Joan Wright, together they continue to inspire choristers of all ages to the joys of singing.

Hosted by gifted performer Michael Griffith, who is currently channelling Annie Lennox at the Festival, the show is an amazing expression of divas and diversity and truly a night to remember. mona s at u r d ay 13 j uly | 8 p m $3 9.50
