Bingley Music Live is back with biggest lineup ever by Dominique Daly
Bingley’s Myrtle Park is set to host something very special as Bingley Music Festival returns to this leafy setting for another weekend, 1 to 3 September. The Festival, now in its eleventh year, burst onto the circuit back in 2007 and has quickly become one of Yorkshire’s most celebrated outdoor music events. Returning bigger and better than ever, Bingley Music Festival is spread across two stages packed with established and emerging talent. 2017’s line up boasts some heavy-hitting headliners with Welsh legends Manic Street Preachers, the Kaiser Chiefs and The Wombats playing on the main stage across the weekend. Also playing on stage one will be a host of artists, with Pete Doherty, Milburn, Badly Drawn Boy, Feeder, Soul II Soul, British Sea Power, Little Comets, High Tyde and many more gracing Myrtle Park. Headlining the first day of the festival in true rock style are the Manic Street Preachers, on Friday 1 September. Formed in Blackwood in 1986, the founding members

of the band - James Dean Bradfield (lead vocals, lead guitar), Nicky Wire (bass guitar, lyrics) and Sean Moore (drums, percussion) - still remain today. First single Suicide Alley was released in 1988, followed by their debut album Generation Terrorists in 1992. The band celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their eighth studio album Send Away The Tigers in May 2017, marking the occasion with a 10 Year Collectors’ Edition, including unheard tracks, never before seen footage and artwork from the band’s own archive. In 2017 Manic Street Preachers announced their return with a string of huge outdoor performances, including a headline set at this year’s Bingley Music Live. Frontman James Dean Bradfield has also spoken
The Manic Street Preachers
about the upcoming release of new material, saying, “It will be nice to feel like a band again.” On Saturday 2 September Myrtle Park will be treated to a show of epic proportions as the wild energy of the Kaiser Chiefs takes over Bingley. Formed in 2003, the band had huge hits with I Predict a Riot and Ruby, which has sold over 461,000 copies. Summer 2016 saw the Chiefs release their sixth studio album Stay Together – the follow up to their #1 album from 2014, Education, Education, Education & War. Frontman Ricky Wilson also recently found popularity as a judge for the hit TV show The Voice. Closing the festival on Sunday 3 September are The Wombats, a band who were at the peak of the noughties British indie-rock explosion. With a knack for smashing out indie dance floor fillers, the Wombats won NME Award for Best Dance Floor Filler in 2008 with Let’s Dance To Joy Division.
Other massive hits such as Kill The Director, Backfire At The Disco and Moving To New York skyrocketed the band’s combined sales to an impressive 300,000. 2017 saw The Wombats announce a 10-year anniversary in celebration of their debut album A Guide To Love, Loss And Desperation with a show at London’s 02 Brixton Academy. The exciting return for the band is accompanied by front man Murphy’s announcement that work is underway for The Wombat’s fourth studio album, scheduled for release at the end of summer 2017. It’s not just the main stage that boasts acts to make it worth getting down to the Park stage two will be showcasing some of the best new and emerging artists from the UK. Bingley Music Live is the spot to discover your new favourite band with rising stars like Tom Grennan, The Big Moon, Tigercub, Fangclub, The Orielles and more playing across the weekend.

Bingley Music Live provides a platform for new artists to burst onto the scene and this year, after a tough selection process through the BML emerging talent competition, four bands have been awarded the opportunity to open stages at the Festival. The lucky winners are anthemic pop-rockers Your Illuminations, Huddersfield’s Able’s Army, power-pop outfit The Harriets and Leeds seven-piece Sifaka. Camping is not available on site for the festival - however there are a number of close-by options for festival goers to get the full experience. Bingley Music Live has teamed up with Bradford & Bingley Sports Club for the festival weekend, and their campsite is within easy walking distance of Myrtle Park and has great facilities, close to all local amenities. Site pitches book up early, so don’t leave it too late to get yours or you may be disappointed. Festivalgoers who prefer four posts to the floor can find many nearby hotels and B&Bs. 10 Preview Feature

Stage 84’s Broadway Showcase by Craig Winward
Stage 84 will make a welcome return to Bingley Arts Centre on 21-22 July with their brand new Broadway Showcase, featuring favourite songs from some of the most popular musicals and suitable for all ages. The production follows Stage 84’s past critically-acclaimed productions at the town’s local theatre, including Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Starlight Express and Oliver. This year, the group have chosen to stage a showcase-format production, which features a cast of more than 50 young people aged between 7 and 18. The show’s director and Stage 84’s managing director Craig Winward said, “This dynamic project has been another wonderful opportunity for our many performing arts class students. It has enabled them to learn music covering a variety of periods and styles, and to think about storytelling in a new way. We have been careful to include something that will be of interest to people of all ages – both our students and audiences alike. “Our young people are now very fortunate to have the opportunity to perform on
18 Preview Feature
several local theatre stages throughout the year, and Bingley remains one of our favourite venues. Audiences are so supportive, and this serves to enhance the effect of the show on the night. Despite staging our production in the height of summer, the theatre is now air-conditioned so audiences can rest assured they will also be comfortable on the night. There is always something interesting to book for at theatres such as Bingley Arts Centre and we hope to see many local people at our own show once more in July.” The group’s Broadway Showcase will include favourite songs from musicals such as Annie, Carousel, Wicked, Hairspray, Chicago, Matilda and many more, musically directed by Jim Lunt. Choreographer Sophie Lindley has produced two new contemporary dance numbers which have become something of a highlight of Stage 84 shows. Several cast members have multiple professional
credits to their name, including James Slingsby, who has recently performed in Billy Budd with Opera North, as part of the 2017 Aldeburgh Festival. Other cast members have recently appeared in short films or on stage in a professional capacity. Edward Cooke, who sings several solos in Stage 84’s show, appears as a school student in Channel 4’s new series Ackley Bridge, and has appeared on stage in London and at the West Yorkshire Playhouse on multiple occasions. Georgia Cox, Mia Dearnley and Sophie Chellam have enjoyed recent success, getting through to the second round of auditions for ITV’s singing competition The Voice. Stage 84 have previously received fourstar reviews from Broadway Baby for their productions at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and won countless accolades for the standard of performances both at home and around the UK. Earlier this year, their junior performing arts students presented excerpts of Disney’s
Little Mermaid Jr for adjudicators at the inaugural Junior Theatre Celebration at the Curve Theatre, Leicester. The group were selected as the winners of their category and invited to perform in a special showcase headlining the event. The school has offered high quality training in all aspects of the performing arts since it was founded in 1984 by the principal, Valerie Jackson MBE. Young people aged 3+ who are interested in treading the boards themselves, or who have an interest in acting for screen, can experience the world of performing arts at Stage 84’s upcoming Summer Schools, which run in Skipton 24-28 July and in Bradford 31 July to 4 August. For further information about any of Stage 84’s productions and classes, visit www. stage84.com

Bradford & Bingley Sports Club
by Haigh Simpson
Following a difficult few years that included flooding and financial problems, the future of Bradford and Bingley Sports Club appeared to be in real danger at this time last year. The site is the home of several separate sports clubs with facilities for cricket, rugby, hockey and canoeing and has been an important hub for sport in the area for generations. But with land developers circling and debts mounting, there appeared to be a genuine possibility that all this could be lost. Fortunately a family trust, with historic ties to the club, stepped in in its hour of need to purchase the land and secure the long term future of sport at Wagon Lane.
We spoke to director of the Craven Family trust Lee Craven about the takeover and their ambitions for the future of the site. How did the takeover of the sports club come about and what sort of structure has been put in place? My father used to play rugby for Bingley Rugby Club, before it became Bradford & Bingley. He kept in touch with the club and a couple of years ago he got wind that it was struggling. He gave a bit of money towards keeping things going but it was only really a sticking plaster solution. So we discussed it with Richard Bottomley OBE and former sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe. We discussed a way to put the sports club on a proper long term footing. The danger was that if the sports club fell the land would be in jeopardy. It may be on a floodplain but it’s a big site and there are areas that could be developed so developers were circling. There was a real danger that the whole sports club would disappear. We came up with a solution to put the club on a firm foundation, which was to set up a charitable trust and buy the assets from the former sports club. This enabled the sports club to pay off their debts, and the trust has granted long term leases to all the individual sports clubs at a generous rate. It’s given the clubs a chance to focus on what they do without worrying too much about the bigger picture. The way it’s structured is that if anything bad happened to any of the clubs the land would not be lost, the land would just revert back to the trust who would look for another club or group to take it on. We could just sit back and say we’ve done what we wanted to do. But it’s a great site in a great location and we think we can do a lot with it.
How do you plan to take it forward from here? It’s early days but we had a meeting with representatives of all the clubs, the trustees and Philip Davies MP, who supports what we are doing. It was a very early discussion on how to take the club forward. Obviously we want to involve Bradford Council because there are a lot of changes happening in terms of sports provision, particularly in mixed ability sports. We feel we can develop the site as a real hub for mixed ability and disabled sports and we are working on an expression of interest to send to Sports England. At the moment there are some small improvements being made. For example the Rugby Club are improving their dressing rooms with a bit of help from the trust. There are some improvements happening to the river bank. But looking further ahead we want to build a proper facility to replace what is already there that is protected from flooding. But also to include the sort of facilities you need these days, like proper disabled access, proper female changing rooms and so on. How did the clubs react? I think it was relief more than anything. The sports club had been struggling on and I think the individual clubs were just doing their own thing and hoping for the best. So it couldn’t have continued as it was. It needed a fundamental change. The clubs now know they’re not going to lose the land so they can concentrate properly on developing their respective sports.

Bradford Science Festival by Haigh Simpson
26 Preview Feature
Bradford Science Festival will bring three days of fun, experiments and exploration to the city centre this July, with dinosaurs roaming through The Broadway shopping centre and a live crime investigation in the National Science and Media Museum. The Festival is re-launching in a new format following a year off in 2016 and will aim to inspire a new generation of science-lovers in Bradford. Festival organiser Robin Dark said, “We’ve got some fantastic acts and activities from all over that will really help raise the profile of science across the whole district.” The launch event on Friday 14 July will take place in the National Science & Media Museum with a special edition of the popular Lates events, featuring the usual mix of interactive entertainment, as well as a preview of the museum’s summer exhibition Supersenses. Expect something similar to the Wonderlab launch with a big, fun event to kick off the weekend’s proceedings. Over the weekend there will be activities in the Museum, The Broadway and in City Park. A range of community groups, attractions, scientific organisations, plus the college and university will be helping create a familyfriendly festival themed around science, technology, engineering and maths. “It will be very much focused on Bradford, the people and places. It will be a chance for everyone to come down and get in that festival spirit,” said Robin. In line with this, the festival hopes to appeal to disadvantaged groups and people who don’t always have the opportunity to engage with science in a fun way. “We want to show them that there’s science in everything and really inspire those who come to the event.”

Robin Dark said, “This year is about creating a big launch and building on previous science festivals in Bradford. We’re grateful to all the organisations who are getting involved and going forward the Museum will focus its year-round activities towards the Science Festival, so it will be a really important event for us and for Bradford.

We’d like it to grow over the next ten years and hopefully we can create the kind of atmosphere and community spirit that we know Bradford is famous for. Putting on The Bingley Show by Haigh Simpson
Over 10,000 visitors are expected to attend The Bingley Show as it returns to Myrtle Park for the 136th edition on 22 July. The one day event is organised by the Airedale Agricultural Society and we spoke to vice chairman David Hempel to find out how an event like this comes together. What attractions do you have lined up for this year’s festival?
Our main attraction is the Bolddog Lings Freestyle Team, who are the official Honda motorcycle display team in the UK. They will be jumping up to 30 feet in the air with jumps over 75 feet in length. So that’s going to require a bigger main ring than we have ever had and should be a real spectacle. Tying in with our agricultural roots, the sheep show educates people about different breeds of sheep and is always incredibly popular.
32 Community Feature
We’ve also got regular attractions such as show jumping and the Harriers Fell Race and dozens of traders showcasing local Yorkshire produce. Hopefully there’s something for everyone. It’s a relatively urban setting for an agricultural show, how does that shape the event? We are one of the more urban shows, which I think both helps and hinders us really. We do things a lot differently from some

of the Dales shows, whose organising committees, exhibitors and visitors are from a more agricultural or rural background. We try to educate a little bit more, so we try to demonstrate the workings of agricultural life and how food might be produced. We want to make people aware that meat doesn’t come ready-packed on a tray! We have a lot of visitors who have been coming for a lot of years. I know there are cases where people who have been going since they were children now bring their own children and grandchildren, so it’s a real family event. Because of that we’re always careful to make sure there’s something for everybody, whether that’s to see the cattle and sheep, the vintage cars or the daredevil shows. We also try to create a unique shopping experience with a range of local producers showcasing some fantastic Yorkshire products. It’s nice to be able to do that and a lot of the exhibitors like to come to Bingley as they get a different audience and often a lot more questions about what they do and how they do it. People who haven’t grown up in that environment often find it quite strange or surprising to see exhibitors using a big hairdryer and hairspray on cattle. But it’s
common practice for these people to want to make the best of their animals and really make them stand out in front of a judge. The park itself is in great condition and it’s a lovely place to be on any day, so we’re very lucky to be able to use it. We obviously have to make sure we return it in the state we find it and a huge amount of effort goes into making sure we do that. What sort of people are involved in the organising committee and how did you get involved?
Most of the organising committee tend to have an agricultural background. I used to farm, I married into a farming family and I used to keep pedigree sheep. I showed at Bingley, I then got involved in the running of the cattle and sheep section and subsequently became involved with the management committee. I’m now a director of the Society and vice chairman. But it’s by no means essential for people to come from a farming background - we need people with a range of skills and backgrounds. The event aims to attract a wide range of visitors so having a range of people involved helps us to create an appealing event.
Community Feature 33
What are the biggest challenges facing the organising committee? It’s one of those things that grows in complexity and the amount of time it takes to organise every year. We’re all voluntary and there are fewer and fewer of us taking up an ever-increasing load. Costs are increasing every year, things like hiring in fencing, marquees, tables and chairs etc. always seem to be going up while we try desperately to maintain the entry fee. It leaves us with a finer and finer margin to put the event on.
How soon after the event has finished does work start on the following year’s event?
We start packing down immediately after the show and normally by the Sunday tea time the park looks pretty much back to normal. In a lot of cases you would hardly know we were there. We normally then have a week or two to gather our thoughts and in early August we have a meeting to go over the show and discuss things we’d like to improve or change. For a one day event it’s a year-round commitment and a year-round operation. How does it feel to be continuing an event with such a long history?
136 years is a very long time and we live in a different world now compared to then. But what we offer is still as relevant as ever. People are taking more and more interest in where their food comes from and that’s at the heart of what the Bingley Show is all about. All the organising committee are aware that we’re caretakers of this. It’s not ours and we want to pass the baton on, hopefully with the show in better shape than it was when we took it on. What’s your role on the day?
We hope that everything that needs doing has already been done prior to the event itself. But I tend to be there from about 6am and it’s a case of making sure all our trade stand holders and exhibitors get to where they need to and everybody has what they need. There are always last minute wrinkles that need ironing out but it’s just a case of going around and dealing with things as they come. Apart from that it’s just making sure everyone is happy. Hockney, heritage and happy times for all by Claire Gibbons
2017 is a big year for one of Bradford’s most famous sons and Saltaire Festival is joining in the celebrations in a big way. David Hockney turns 80 in July and the Silver family are honouring Hockney’s life and works with a birthday exhibition in Salts Mill, which will be running across the 10 days of the Festival in September. Schools are also getting involved with their own artwork in the style of Hockney and celebrating all things ‘birthday’. The new Hockney exhibition underpins a strong visual arts strand across Saltaire Festival this year, which starts with the Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September. Village residents will be opening their yards, gardens and allotments to the general public, exhibiting professional sculptures from local and national artists, specifically chosen for each different space. Following on from the success of previous years there’ll also be Pop Up houses across the village featuring music, food, stalls and entertainment across the opening weekend.
to the Festival with painting workshops and a new piece of work based on the early days of Saltaire, and to celebrate 150 years of worship in the village. Through her work, Kay will be showing how she makes her pencil ‘sing’ as she coaxes an image out of a blank piece of paper. And as ever, there is much more happening right across the village over the ten days of the Festival, not least the annual comedy night on Wednesday 13 September at Caroline Street Social Club - guaranteed to sell out yet again.
Visitors can guide themselves around the village with the Open Gardens and Sculpture Trail leaflet and learn about the history of each house and its residents as they go.
Ros Garside, chair of Saltaire Festival, and the teams of volunteers have been busy curating a packed programme to suit all ages and tastes and to celebrate the uniqueness of Saltaire village.
The Festival has an artist in residence this year - renowned pencil and mixed media artist Kay Andrews. Kay will be bringing her unique style

the village itself, as well as showcase the best in music, art, food and drink from the local area and beyond,” said Ros. “It’s an opportunity to really show-off the village in all its Victorian glory, and show the many thousands of visitors why Saltaire is so special, and for the residents to share their sense of pride in the area.” The Festival is supported by Bradford Council who organise the markets on Exhibition Road each year, but other than that there’s no permanent funding in place. Each year the volunteer teams work hard to generate the £60,000 or so needed to put on such a wide range of events and activities for all ages, across the whole cultural, historical and artistic spectrum – and to keep the vast majority of events free for all. This is no mean feat and the Festival team are still on the look-out for sponsors to help make this year’s Festival a success, as well as encouraging donations from the general public who come along each year and enjoy the free entertainment. “If every visitor gave £1 each year to the Festival we could guarantee a full programme of events without the worry of fundraising as we do now,” Ros added. “The Festival is a registered charity and everyone involved is a volunteer – everyone giving their time and expertise for free. The general public can help by donating through our JustGiving page and through the new charity collection boxes across the village.” The Festival Guide will be launched in July and visitors will be able to see the full list of events and activities on the website as well in the printed version of the Guide, available across the village and beyond. So, for now, save the dates, keep your eyes on the social media channels, visit the website for information as it happens and give a pound or two towards the Festival funds. Saltaire Camac Harp Weekend by Heather Sager
This popular event is now in its fourth year and if you’ve ever dreamed of owning and playing a harp then the Early Music Shop, Salts Mill, Victoria Road, Saltaire is the place to be, Friday 22 to Sunday 24 September. Visitors to the showroom can expect to see a fabulous display of Camac lever and pedal harps and the Camac France team will be present throughout the weekend to offer expert advice on their range. If you’re lucky enough to already own a Camac harp, free service and regulation can be arranged over the weekend (reservation required). Eira Lynn Jones, head of harp studies at the Royal Northern College of Music Manchester, working with EMS harp tutors Rhian Evans and Alice Kirwan, has devised a stunning weekend programme for each and every type of harpist, from complete beginners to professionals, children and adults. Tristan Le Govic, one of the leading Celtic harpers today will also be visiting from France as guest artist and tutor.
There will be opportunities to work with Eira, Tristan, Alice and Rhian in a wide variety of workshops on Saturday for intermediate/ advanced players. Take your pick, from dance tunes from across the Celtic lands to creative harping, or pick up a few tips from tutors and technicians on such things as how to change a harp string and tuning at the Harp TLC talk. A Come And Try session on Sunday morning is for complete beginners, but book early as this session is usually sold out. Harps will be provided for those wanting to participate. Above all, don’t miss the Festival Concert, this year in the beautiful third floor gallery of Salts Mill. Eira will be joined by students past and present in a programme featuring six pedal harps, and Tristan will perform his new programme, Dãns. Formed at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in 2014, The Sweet Water Warblers have gone on to attract serious admiration wherever they appear.
When they finally gelled into the potent force they have become, it was the most natural coming together – three singing sirens and multi-instrumentalists whose repertoire swings from gospel and bluegrass to soul and even joyful interpretations of pop. With three-part vocal harmonies that are sublime, they trade instruments including mountain fiddle and banjo, uke, guitar and double bass. 25 August, 8pm, Caroline Street Club , www, theliveroom.info

Dan Baird and Homemade Sin
Daniel John “Dan” Baird (born December 12, 1953, in San Diego, California) is an American singer-songwriter, musician and producer. He is best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist from the chart-topping 1980s rock band The Georgia Satellites. Homemade Sin performs a mixture of Baird’s solo material in addition to the hits and fan favourites from his years with The Georgia Satellites. To achieve a classic tube amplifier sound with Homemade Sin, Baird relies heavily on a vintage setup very similar to what was used during his tenure with The Georgia Satellites. Creating confusion for some fans, there is a reformed version of The Georgia Satellites featuring original guitarist Rick Richards and bassist Rick Price, who joined the group to replace original bassist Keith Christopher, who left the band prior to their fame.
