A Right Royal Do
by Allan Mirfield
The Friends of Prince of Wales Park are cooking up a fantastic familyfriendly event on 21 May between 12.30 and 5pm in the Prince of Wales Park arena. Take a pinch of African drumming, a generous dollop of Punch and Judy, two scoops of Morris dancing, a large helping of fancy dress parades, drizzle it all with jazz music, a real ale bar and hog roast and what do you get? A Right Royal Do! If you also add in Forest School activities, peg doll-making and the usual selection of stalls, they have a tasty afternoon planned. Why call it A Right Royal Do? Well, the park is named after the Prince of Wales so the theme of the event is royalty. The Friends invite everyone to come dressed as a king, queen, prince or princess. Prizes will be given for the best costumes. They ask for a minimum donation of £1 per person on arrival to help them cover event costs and fund future work. Let’s face it, where else would you get such a feast of entertainment for £1 per person? Start wishing for a warm, dry 21 May.

Bingley’s Five Rise Beer Festival by Kevin Watt
Following their successful inaugural event last year the Rotary Clubs of Bingley and Bingley Airedale have been busy over the last 12 months organising their second two-day beer festival, to be held at the Bingley Arts Centre on the weekend of 2 and 3 June. In its first year the festival was proud to make a profit for the benefit of good causes in the local community.
Tickets are available from Bingley Arts Centre, 01274 567983. An early response is suggested to avoid disappointment.
The festival aims to provide over 70 different perfectly cooled ales and ciders available from around the UK, including some local specialities to suit everyone’s taste.
There are excellent rail links to Bingley from all over West Yorkshire, and the venue is only a short walk away.
Entertainment will be provided on Friday evening by the Peter Franks Allstar Jazz Band and on Saturday evening by the very popular classic covers rock group, Sawdust. If you missed out on Bingley’s Five Rise Beer Festival last year, it really is worth getting your hands on some tickets for this one. Not only is the event a brilliant excuse to enjoy yourself whilst raising money for great causes, it’s also a fantastic community project, bringing together people from all walks of life through the love of beer. The popularity of beer festivals is growing and we expect demand for tickets to be greater than last year so there’s a need to grab them early. There’s a limit of 300 for each of the three sessions. Tickets for the evening sessions, from 6 to 11pm, are £6 and entry to the Saturday afternoon session is £5. This includes souvenir glass, two drinks and beer tasting notes. Food will be available throughout the festival.
Do come along and have a great time, all profits from the event will be used to support local charities. Further details can be found at our website www.fiverisebeerfest.co.uk

Local Producers... Darren Marks by Haigh Simpson
Darren Marks is the owner and head brewer of Bingley Brewery, a Wilsden-based brewery established in 2014. Can you tell us briefly how Bingley Brewery came to be?
Have local people and local businesses been supportive?
I previously worked in financial services, IT to be more specific. Like a lot of people I became disenfranchised with the day job so I decided to make a change. About five years ago I sent myself on a practical brewing course in Sunderland, at a place called Brewlab. After that it was a case of selecting a supplier for the brew kit, finding suitable premises and of course deciding what we would be called.
In our early days, even before we had our premises and I was cuckoo brewing at Brewlab, a local pub - Off The Tap allowed us to set up a pop-up bar on their premises one evening. It was an extremely busy night and we made some money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
How important was it to include Bingley in the company’s name and branding? Extremely important. I was born and have lived in the area all my life and wanted locality to be at the forefront of our branding and logo.
Another local publican, Dave Morris, who opened Chip N Ern over a year ago, approached me and said he was interested in taking our beer to supply four out of eight hand pumps. As a new business this kind of support was extremely welcome and helped give us exposure locally. To this day we are still delivering four or five casks weekly to The Chip and now know Dave and his wife Jacqui really well.
Closer to the brewery other companies in the business park have offered help when we have needed it, which has been greatly appreciated. 14 Interview Feature
What’s been your proudest moment as a brewery? My proudest moment to date was winning the Beer Of The Festival award last year at the Baildon Beer Festival. That first award confirmed to me that as a new brewery we were doing the right things.
How would you assess Yorkshire’s independent brewing industry? Extremely vibrant. I think it’s great to see Yorkshire flying the flag for small independent breweries providing a breadth and depth of choice to publicans in our county and beyond. The backdrop though has been a prolonged decline in pub stock in the UK. However that too is changing on the high street, where we are seeing both old pub stock being bought and renewed and new micro pubs appearing all the time.
Do you think the recent boom in ale and craft beer is sustainable and what challenges do you expect to face as a business in the coming years? Yes, I do think the craft beer market is sustainable. We have more breweries today producing a wide and varied array of beer styles than ever before because that’s what today’s beer drinker wants and expects. We’ve seen inner city areas such as North Parade in Bradford flourish off the back of the boom in craft beer and I don’t see why it shouldn’t spread to other areas in the city.
We’re growing, but I think the number one challenge is to ensure that we stay relevant to the buying public and that, to me, means we need to continually look at developing new and interesting beers as well as exploring new markets. At the moment we produce for bottle and cask but soon we’ll be looking at investing in other areas such as keg and maybe further down the line at providing beers in cans. Interview Feature 15

Local Producers... Mandi Iles by Haigh Simpson
What made you become a producer? Finishing a career in IT sales, I wanted to do something completely different. Always having had a love of baking and especially pies, it made sense what with Paul being a butcher and being a true believer in local produce we started the journey towards producing a truly artisan pie.
Where and how do you make your produce? Everything is made on site in Saltaire in a purpose-built kitchen. Our hot water pastry recipe took us three months to perfect and is made with the best ingredients. Along with all our seasonings, which again are our own, we guarantee our meat is locally sourced from Yorkshire farmers.
Why should people buy local? To support small local businesses. I believe that local businesses understand their product and have a passion for what they do. When you come to visit us in Saltaire or Sunbridge Wells you’re made welcome, and we

understand our product and can answer any questions. We offer a full bespoke service - we can make any pie with any filling and any size within 48 hrs ... you can’t buy this type of service nationally.
If you could recommend one product from your stall, what would it be? The good old traditional Pig Thinks Yorkshire pork pie.

Life drawing in Bingley by Haigh Simpson
Artist Jane Fielder, who runs The Bingley Gallery, has attended or run life drawing classes for over 20 years. She first started at Limerick School of Art in Ireland when she was just 16. When she moved to Yorkshire over 30 years ago it was not long before she was looking for a group to join. She found just what she was looking for at a course run by Keighley College at Hillworth Lodge on the Oakworth Road. Then the class moved to Dalton Lane, but this building changed use and Jane again found herself searching for a group. Having little luck she decided to set one up herself and was lucky enough to be offered the use of the art room at Parkside School in Cullingworth, where the group ran for many years until it finally settled in Bingley, when Jane got her own gallery 10 years ago. Once a week the drawers meet to take on one of the hardest subjects of all, the human figure. Jane has about 30 different models on her books. All are reliable, hard working and professional, and each week between two and seventeen artists gather in the cosy cellar of The Bingley Gallery in Park Road to take on the challenge. They generally start with two or three quick five or ten minute poses to get their eye in and then do a half hour one, break for a cuppa and a chat and finish up with another half hour pose.
28 Community Feature
Jane says, “It’s a really lovely group. I look forward to it. For two hours your mind is completely focussed, day to day thoughts, worries and cares totally disappear, whilst you mind is absorbed in one of the hardest tasks of all. Sometimes we meet in the summer and draw in the garden, which adds a different dimension. I’ve even drawn one of models in the snow!” One of our models, writer and poet Sue Vickerman, has written several books about her experience as a model, with many drawings by members. Our group are all ages, from students right up to people in their 70s and 80s and our models too range from 17 to one man in his 90s, who had always wanted to give it a go. Jane’s life drawing sessions take place every Thursday evening starting at 6:30pm. For more info visit www.janefielder.com.

An Uncommon visit to Cliffe Castle by Andy Abbott
32 Preview Feature
UnCommons is a series of events from Recon, Bradford Threadfest and M@BU (Music at Bradford University), bringing together live music, performance, installations and interactive technology in unusual spaces in and around Bradford. So far we’ve had events at the former Marks & Spencer on Darley Street, working with The Brick Box in their Wild Woods installation, and an after party for the National Science and Media Museum’s Lates event at the Delius Arts and Cultural Centre in the German Church. The events have included silent gigs - live performances tuned into via headphones - virtual reality and augmented reality experiences, a European noise-rock showcase, movement-reactive projections and sound installations, amplified drawings, 360 video hotspots and psychedelic thumb piano busking. For the third edition we’re working with Bradford Museums and Galleries to offer an exclusive alternative exploration of one of the district’s - if not the UK’s - most unusual and eccentric heritage museums, Cliffe Castle in Keighley. If you’ve not visited Cliffe Castle before you’re in for a treat. Without wanting to spoil the surprises in store there’s something for everyone - from preserved Victorian rooms to two headed lambs, natural and social history galleries, endless rooms of taxidermy, a Chewbacca toy (the actor was from Keighley) and the intriguing ‘wife rocker’ alongside an internationally important display of stained glass by Morris and Co. Performances and contributions come from composer, musician, producer and sound artist James Mabbett, aka Napoleon IVth, who has worked with Bob McDougall to document
buildings and institutions, using sounds recorded within these places and including both the public and users of the building in the final production. Creative technologist and artist Joanne Armitage will offer a workshop sharing her skills with sound, physical computing, digital media and interaction design and focused on turning objects into instruments. Reet Maff’l is a spoken word and sound collage duo who have developed siteresponsive and context-specific sets for a variety of scenarios, including performing in a spaceship on top of Matt’s Gallery in London and an augmented reality futuristic tour of Derby’s Silk Mill Museum. They offer a surreal take on some of the museum’s collections and objects. Artists Amelia Crouch, Luke Drozd and Katch Skinner have been commissioned by South Square Gallery in Thornton to create new objects and works for the Cliffe Castle gift shop. These works, spanning print, ceramics and a special tea towel, will also be displayed at South Square Gallery throughout May and June. Daru Rooke, the area museum manager for Bradford Museums and Galleries, will offer a special guided tour of Cliffe Castle Museum during which you may get chance to ask him about choosing the hairy pelt of Benicio del Toro in the 2010 horror movie The Wolfman. UnCommons #3 takes place Sunday 28 May 2017 at Cliffe Castle, Keighley BD20 6LH from 1 - 4pm. The event is free, but bring some money for the limited edition souvenirs in the gift shop! A Quick Chat with
Benjamin Comstive Benjamin Comstive is the manager of The Potting Shed and The Firepit
Favourite place to hang around in Bingley? It’s got to be St Ives. I love to get away from the stress of running a business in the beautiful surroundings. I’m lucky because round the back of the Potting Shed and the FirePit is such a beautiful area, it’s nice being on your own, in that open space.
Local event you couldn’t live without? Bingley Music Live. I’m particularly looking forward to this year’s line up with Kaisers Chiefs, Pete Doherty and Maximo Park. We’re hoping the Potting Shed & FirePit can do something big with festival this year; watch this space...
Local business you admire Big Issue in the North. I worked for them for four years as an outreach support worker. I’ve always admired what they do for homeless people I just think it’s such a good scheme.
Local person you most admire? My mum. She has been a strong figure in my life and a great role model and has provided me with the platform to be where I am now.
Name a guilty pleasure Haribo Starmix - love them jelly sweets. Keep them away from me.
