Books and Information

Learn

We do, of course, have books. Fiction books for pleasure. Non-fiction for learning and information. Books for all ages. We also have quiet spaces to study and just read.

What Can I Borrow? You can borrow books, maps, DVDs, E-Books, Audiobooks, e-Audiobooks, Playaway MP3s and E-Magazines. You can borrow up to 25 items at any one time. Children can also borrow 25 items. In all libraries you will be given a single ‘credit card’ type ticket which you will need to present each time you borrow material. All libraries use the computerised library card. You can reserve any item we have in stock for free. Just pop into your library or you can do it online. You can renew books by visiting your local library, online, or via our automated phone line 01274 430094. http://capitadiscovery.co.uk/bradford/

Bookstart Bear Club

Sharing books and stories is all about having fun together.

Babies and pre-school children join Bookstart Bear Club – where they will collect stickers at each visit and a certifcate every sixth visit. Along the way they will also receive incentives including a free Bookstart Teddy Bear, picture books and vouchers for free swims. Do not worry if your child wants to hang onto a favourite book, plus you can renew them by calling the library or online.

It’s never too early to introduce babies to the colourful world of books. We encourage parents to get library cards for their babies. Libraries are really friendly places to go. Children have their own area where they can play and look at books. We have a wide collection of board books and picture books for you to borrow and share. Books are for using. Accidents happen – we are happy to make allowances for damage as long as it doesn’t happen too often. There are no fines on overdue books for children.

Whether it’s a general interest in your local heritage or a study of a particular aspect of local or family history, friendly and supportive members of staff are available to help – just ask! As well as books, our collections include various types of printed and digital material including newspapers, maps, photographs, census, electoral registers, directories, parish records and much more. Online The Bradford Collection The Bradford collection covers the history and development of the whole of Bradford district. It has its roots in the first public library in Bradford which was established in 1872. We are constantly adding current local material so the collection spans many years right up to the present day. Today, Bradford Local Studies library is housed in the recently refurbished library at Margaret McMillan Tower along with the Bradford branch of the West Yorkshire Archive Service.

The Keighley Collection Keighley Local Studies library is on the first floor of Keighley’s historic Carnegie library, the first public library in England to be funded by Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1904. It includes the extensive Keighley Town Archives covering all aspects of Keighley’s history as well as an excellent Bronte collection.

The library service provides free access to genealogy and historical newspaper websites in every library, including ancestry library, find my past, British newspaper archive and nineteenth century newspapers. Ancestry Library offers comprehensive genealogical information available online with access to historical records such as Census returns, Birth Marriage and Death indexes, Military records and much more. Find My Past also provides a range of historical records including the 1939 register containing the details of 41 million people. Explore the wealth of resources in the library via our blog at https://bradfordlocalstudies. wordpress.com/ Here you can find out about upcoming events, read the latest features and book reviews or browse through our hundreds of historic photographs of Bradford and the surrounding areas available online via flickr.

Reading and Writing Reading Groups

Writers Groups

Reading groups are a great way to meet people and talk about books. We have over 80 reading groups in schools, pubs, community centres, churches, private homes and libraries. Groups usually meet once a month. We provide sets of books to our reading groups free of charge. As well as general fiction book sets we also have specialist book sets for adults who are lapsed or new to reading or for whom English is a second language.

Bradford Libraries has several writers groups at different locations and times. Whether you’re an experienced writer looking to develop your writing or you are starting out on your writing journey you’ll find a writers group is a great place to share your writing, receive feedback and support and pass on tips and ideas. The meetings are relaxed and informal. The groups may run slightly differently from one another but there will usually be an exercise or theme set by the group.

Creative Writing Courses

These groups are untutored.

We offer creative writing courses for beginners and improvers taught by established creative writing tutors.

Author events and workshops

These courses include writing short stories, memoir, poetry, writing for well being and more. Each course usually lasts for 10 weeks with the opportunity to continue.

We frequently have visits from authors and poets throughout the year - sometimes they will give a talk about their work and books and sometimes they will provide writing workshops. We hold regular poetry readings both with established poets and open-mic sessions for all. We like to get creative in our book making and zine workshops. We’ve even had a graphic novel workshop and workshops on how to promote your book!
