In the news Cinema complex gets green light Work is set to start on the final stage of the Broadway development shortly, after Bradford Council granted detailed planning consent. The scheme will see the existing row of shops, currently occupied by HMV, transformed into a boutique cinema, restaurants and cafes. The new cinema will be operated by The Light and will house six cinema screens, four restaurants and a cafe. HMV have announced they will be moving into The Broadway in the middle of May. The plans for the restaurants in the new complex have yet to be announced.
£1.5 million boost for St George’s Hall
Sunbridge Wells bars revealed
St George’s Hall will temporarily close its doors at the end of March to undergo a £4 million transformation, after securing funding from both Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the city’s local authority.
The Sunbridge Wells development has been given a boost after seven venues were granted licences, including one of Bradford’s oldest breweries.
Bradford Council is undertaking a programme of works to maintain and improve the building as one of Bradford’s key heritage venues and cultural attractions, a building which has been an integral part of Bradford’s landscape since 1853. Bradford Council and Bradford Theatres were notified they will be awarded £1.5 million to embark upon a programme of redevelopment works to make significant improvements to the building.
Wallers Brewery will bring long lost recipes back into production while other bars in the development include a gin bar, Sunbridge Bar serving tapas food and world beers, Alibi champagne and coffee lounge, and the Rose & Crown, a real ale bar. There will also be a Laurel and Hardy bar with a 1920s films theme, and a 60-seat Indian restaurant. Fit outs are underway and developer Graham Hall is anticipating an early summer launch.
The St George’s Hall Project plans to restore the sandstone exterior of the landmark Bradford city centre building and make other external and internal improvements to preserve heritage features and enhance the venue.

New artworks by visual artist Moonie have been comissioned to draw attention to the beauty of Little Germany.
Little Germany street art By Haigh Simpson
An ambitious project to boost visitor numbers in the historic Little Germany area of Bradford has been launched, following the opening of The Broadway shopping centre nearby. Little Germany Action Ltd, which includes residents and businesses, is setting up an evolving arts and heritage trail, including original works by Bradford artist Moonie. He views the whole area as a giant artistic canvas and his bold painting of Samson on Church Bank opposite Bradford Cathedral already attracts attention. Group members are funding the scheme supported by a grant from the Rotary Club of Bradford Bronte. Dave West, who lives in Little Germany and chairs the group, says, “We have plans to extend the trail in the future, enabling visitors to discover the heritage of this special area, with more listed buildings per square mile than anywhere else in Britain. We want to attract more visitors and encourage more people and businesses to move into Little Germany, sharing the historic buildings and supporting the cafes and shops.
“This will be a pilot scheme for a combined arts, culture and heritage initiative which highlights existing and new installations and brings them to life with Bluetooth beacon technology linked to a smartphone app. “Some of the art works will remain on display indefinitely while others will be changed from time to time to generate ongoing visitor interest. The pilot is in place and the project will continue to evolve and expand with more opportunities for Bradford-based artists. “Many visitors to The Broadway enjoy their shopping experience unaware that an area of rich industrial and social heritage is just around the corner. We aim to persuade at least some of them to appreciate the architectural grandeur of Little Germany.” Moonie, who describes himself as a situational visual artist, is delighted to be commissioned by the group. “Little Germany is my canvas – and what a canvas. I like to see a space and create a work of art for that space. I wouldn’t want to restrict myself to one form of art. I have ideas for more three-dimensional works which I hope to fulfil in the coming year, so watch this space!”

Kascarade Bradford band’s album debut By Haigh Simpson
It’s been five years in the making and now Bradford indie band Kascarade are set to release their debut album in April, with a live performance and launch event. The Start Of It All features a self-produced, eclectic mix of twelve tracks written and performed over the past five years since the band began. Recorded in their own Thornton Road studios just outside the city centre, the album has come about via a unique method of financing, with Brighouse-based metalwork and glazing business Arkoni contributing significantly towards the production costs. Kascarade was formed in 2010 by vocalist and guitarist Maf Milnes together with Brother Luke (lead guitar / backing vocals) and Adam Brankin (bass), and also features Martin Horton on keyboards and synth. Drummer Carl Bower replaced previous incumbent Michael Golden just over a year ago. Maf explained, “We’re very excited to have finally reached this point but it’s taken a lot of hard work over the past five years. We’re very much a down-to-earth Bradford band immersed in the community and we feel our surroundings and experiences are reflected in the tracks on the album. “We’ve gigged over the past half decade at venues nationally and across the region, including the Saltaire Festival, Brudenell Social Club, the 360 Club in Leeds
and Hebden Bridge’s famous Trades Club. Although we’re very much focused on quality over quantity, we’re not 21 anymore and have matured a lot as a team since 2010. “There’s a host of musical influences playing a part in our output. From The Jam to the Beatles, Thin Lizzy to the Rolling Stones, we’ve forged our own distinctive sound as a result,” added Maf, 30, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2013 Queen’s New Year Honours for his services to the community in Bradford. “There’s a positive message that resonates throughout all of our songs,” explained Maf. “We believe in giving it your all in every aspect of life and in people and community. You only have to turn on the news to realise that’s needed more than ever with so many negative stories and divisions in the world right now - we just want to give out feelgood music with messages of love, hope and friendship. As for the future lead guitarist and songwriter Luke, who is partially sighted, is clear, “We want to be playing bigger stages. We want to be supporting established acts and we want to carry on enjoying the process of producing great music. I personally want to show people that, regardless of your start in life or your abilities, hard work and dedication to your craft will give you skills and opportunities for living and for the future!” Luke, who is in the process of developing a social enterprise to encourage the next generation of musicians, added; “We believe we’re good enough to make the step up to the next level and have been told so by a number of well-established acts when we have supported them. We will continue to work hard on our music. In fact my partner thinks I’m having an affair I’m in the studio that much at the moment!” It’s been a long time coming for Kascarade but it’s clear they’ve enjoyed every moment and that will be aptly reflected in The Start Of It All. 100 Leading Ladies at Cartwright Hall By Rachel Shaw Spring had finally sprung as I headed through a packed-out and crocuslined Lister Park to Cartwright Hall to hear photographer Nancy Honey talk about her photo exhibition of 100 influential senior women in Britain. As I walked into the gallery housing 100 Leading Ladies, the woman herself was being interviewed by a film crew and was speaking eloquently about the motivation behind the exhibition. Nancy wanted to photograph 100 of Britain’s most respected women over the age of 55 including academics, entrepreneurs, fashion designers and composers. The talk accompanying the exhibition was organised by the friends of the museum and there were over 100 people in attendance to listen to Nancy speak. She described it as a living list of role models for young women in today’s society. Nancy explained that, as a starting point, she asked the ladies to pick their favourite place and be photographed there. This seemed to reveal infinitely more about the women than the actual photos themselves. A lot of them chose their homes, ranging from pig farms to a cottage in Cumbria, where Nancy spent the whole weekend. Photos by Mick Flynn
What these women had in common, apart from being at the top of their game, was their satisfaction in ageing and their message that it is possible to have it all, but just not at the same time. What the Leading Ladies also share is that as leading figures in their fields, they defied gender stereotypes. I must admit to having been lucky enough to meet two of the 100 during my career (Margaret Hodge and Helen Browning, if you must know) but many of the others eluded me. As well as talking about the project and its logistics, Nancy shared some insights from the interviews accompanying the photos, which were conducted by former Times journalist Hattie Garlick. These snippets were what really interested me. One in particular from Susie Orbach, psychoanalyst, writer and social activist, who commented on how the society we live in is one where a woman has to be aware of being ‘seen’ at all times. Virginia Ironside, agony aunt, columnist, performer and author said her favourite place was the bath, but decided on being photographed in the bathroom in a robe. Germaine Greer was in the woodland that she had nurtured herself and cook and writer Mary Contini was perched atop a fishing net in the port of her childhood.
Baroness Young, Beryl Grey, Maggie Hanbling and Harriet Walter
It got interesting when the questions were invited and someone asked how the 100 were selected. Nancy approached her heroines in the first instance and once she had gathered 15 women, she started asking them for recommendations of others to speak to. I couldn’t help but feel that this may have meant a lot of women were overlooked for the project. There were of course others who never responded to Nancy or had other commitments. One who slipped through the net was Judi Dench, who Nancy said she would have loved to photograph.
around the inspiring nature of such a diverse range of women in positions of power, but I was left thinking that some young women might only relate to the photos with the help of the fascinating stories behind them, rather than the flat portraits we were presented with.
The message of powerful women is one that clearly captures imaginations. Bradford Museums’ Curator Sonja Kielty spoke about how the education team have built visits
The exhibition is on until Sunday 10 April at Cartwright Hall and is well worth a visit.
Back in the exhibition I struggled to spot Virginia Ironside in her dressing gown without going around twice, but it did make me look at the choices of location and clothing in a whole new light, having heard some of the stories behind the images.

Bradford’s Dominican connection By Haigh Simpson
On Thursday August 27 2015 Tropical Storm Erika hit the Caribbean island of Dominica. It was the deadliest natural disaster in Dominica since Hurricane David in 1979. Many lives were lost. Families were left without their homes and belongings and several villages were devastated and evacuated. Dominica suffered over half a billion dollars in damage to its infrastructure and it has been estimated that the island’s development progress has been set back 20 years. The impact was also felt 4,000 miles away here in Bradford, where the city’s Dominican population could only watch on helplessly as the disaster unfolded. Roughly two-thirds of Bradford’s Caribbean community originate from Dominica and
Dominican culture has been celebrated through the the Bradford Dominica Association (BDA) since its formation in 1979 - as a response to Hurricane David. The Bradford Dominica Association currently has 104 members and is based on Worthington Street, where the group continues to develop and provide cultural, social and educational facilities for Dominicans and the wider community. The Association also raises vital funds towards causes in Dominica, and since August 2015 has been committed to helping victims of Storm Erika through a series of events. Every year in September the the Feast Of Our Lady Of funds raised from last year’s several barrels of clothing,

books and other non-perishable items to be sent across the Atlantic. Later that month David Simon and the Shipley Fire Station had donation buckets at the Saltaire Festival and Selah Sounds headlined a social event at the Dominica Association. Xplosion and the Dominica Association combined with Dominica Week to put on Xplosion’s Cultural Show at the Bradford Playhouse, and social events such as the Dress In White Party have also raised money for the Storm Erika appeal fund. In February, six months after TS Erika hit Dominica, Trish Cooke, Bradford-born author of Dominican heritage, went to Dominica to see what progress had been made since the storm. It was a reminder that the island is very much still in need of help.
She said, “I was surprised at what I found six months on. There were still areas with huge holes in the roads where access was limited, properties were still in need of repair and many of the evacuees are still in bed and breakfast accommodation. I was told the country is now in its ‘Reconstruction Phase’ which is a very slow process.” Kathleen Pinard-Byrne, Director General Dominica Red Cross, said, “We still need help. After Storm Erika there were at least 40 communities that were without water. We looked at those institutions in civil society (as opposed to government-funded institutions) that do not have the funding to put up water tanks. We have a project where we are going to install water tanks with pumps and filters at the Homes for the Elderly as they were severely challenged during the storm. They

need water and they have no backup supply.” On 30 April 2016, the Dominica Association in Bradford will be holding Storm Erika Charity Auction Ball at the Midland Hotel Bradford, to raise money on behalf of the Red Cross for the Dominica Erika Storm Appeal. Utah Saints
Experimentalism and outsider pop By Adam Robertshaw
Any raver of a certain age will remember Utah Saints for their 1992 house classic Something Good, which broke the Leeds duo through from the mad-for-it rave clubs into the top 10 singles chart. The next generation of clubbers will also remember that tune as it was re-released in 2008, earning them yet another chart hit. Since then they’ve enjoyed success as label owners, club promoters and curators of various stages at the Beat-Herder Festival. Next month they roll up in Bradford to play the Bosh! fourth birthday at The Mill, so we sat down with Tim Garbutt, one half of Utah Saints, to see what’s in store. How did the BOSH! gig come about? It made sense because we’d crossed each other’s paths a bunch of times and I knew about Bosh as an event. We run a label, Bombstrikes, which features artists like A Skillz and other downtempo, breakbeat kind of stuff and a lot of the people they put on at Bosh are on that kind of tip as well. So Andy said “Look, we’re doing our birthday, would you be up for doing it?” and I was like “Yeah, of course!” Plus he told us that Drumsound and Bassline Smith were doing it and we’ve done collaborations with them in the past so it made perfect sense. So is that the sort of tip you guys will be playing on the night? Yeah, with that kind of night we’ll be playing an eclectic set but with more bass, breaks and drum and bass thrown in there than the house stuff.
Have you played The Mill before? No but a lot of my friends have played there or been to nights there and they’ve said it’s a really good night and a wicked venue. It’s cool that they’re putting stuff on in Bradford full stop. Respect to Bosh for doing that because it’s not the easiest city to put an event on in. Yeah, it’s a bit of a diamond in the rough, to get a truly underground night that is well attended is pretty special. Yeah and they seem to have built up a good following. They know their market too. The fact that they put on the hardcore downstairs and there’s always a crowd for it. So he’s catering for everyone in this Bradford scene, which I think is wicked. You mentioned before about your label, Bombstrikes. Can you tell us a little bit more about how that started and how it’s progressed? I started Bombstrikes about 11 years ago now. It basically came about because I used to go record shopping every week and get frustrated that I couldn’t find the records I wanted. Cool edits of funk tunes and stuff like that, which would be cool to drop in a bar. So we started making stuff ourselves. At that time you could put vinyl out and shift about a thousand copies, make your money back and use that to fund your next release. It seems to be the natural progression for DJs and producers to move into running labels. Yeah, the cool thing about running a label is that you have that quality control and set your
27
own schedules for putting stuff out. I spent years doing tracks for other labels where it could take six months to a year to get a track out. But with my own label I know that I could go sit in a room tonight, make a tune and if I worked all night and all day tomorrow I could finish it, mix it down, upload it and have it on sale on Juno in two weeks and Beatport in four weeks. One thing I always wanted to do in my life was to be able to do every piece of the music chain, from making a record, to getting it released, doing the artwork, to playing it live. It’s frustrating in business when you have to rely on someone else to do part of the chain and the good thing about having a label is that you have total control. What is your criteria when it comes to quality control? With Bomb Strikes if someone sends us a tune I always listen to it thinking “If it I was playing at a club and it was midnight and nobody was dancing, would this tune get everyone on the dancefloor?” If it can make a club go off then it’s good enough for us. That’s why we called it Bomb Strikes, because every tune we put out has to go off like a bomb. You sampled Slayer’s War Ensemble on I Want You, what made you choose that riff ? Are you a fan? Well when I first started DJing I was 15 years old and well into my hip hop. Jez was in an industrial band called Cassandra Complex. So when we started Utah Saints I was coming at everything from a dance thing and he was coming at it from a more industrial and metal kind of vibe. He introduced me to this band called Young Gods who were really cool. They
were essentially a metal band but instead of guitars they were using samples, which were triggered on the off beat. It was really powerful. So even when we did Something Good, it starts with a loud guitar sample. And it’s weird that now it sounds really natural when you hear the stuff that Pendulum did mixing rock and drum ‘n’ bass but back then when we did the Slayer sample people were like “You can’t do this!” You were either into dance or into rock. Dance purists hated it and the rock people were like “What are you doing putting dance music on this?” But a lot of cool heads clocked that it was a Slayer sample. It was cool too because up until then we’d had three top 10 singles sampling people like Annie Lennox. I Want You was our fourth and we completely changed things up and dropped a Slayer sample. And we were really proud because we got onto Top of the Pops, BBC on a Thursday night, playing Slayer. You mentioned before about Beat-Herder and the curation of The Ring stage. Are you doing that again this year? Yeah. We’ve been involved with Beat-Herder since the second year in and we got on really well with the guys and after playing it a couple of times they asked if we wanted to run the Toil Trees stage in the woods. So we helped them out with some bookings. Then a couple of years ago they wanted that stage to go back to being more house-focussed. We always put on a bit of a mix, with drum n bass, breaks and house. So when they made the new arena, The Ring, we ended up curating it. It’s cool because we used to do a weekly night in Leeds but the amount of work that goes into
promoting a night is unbelievable. Now that it’s just the Beat-Herder thing once a year it’s much less stressful. Who would be on your wish list if you could have anyone? I’d love to put Public Enemy on. De La Soul. And if I had the budget I’d put on something really current for the kids like Stormzy. I was having a look on your Facebook page earlier and I noticed that you’re doing a tune for Playstation for an Oculus Rift game. What’s all that about? Yeah, we just finished a tune yesterday. It’s this virtual reality headset thing and they’re developing a game that’s a bit like that game from the very first Playstation, Wipe Out. It’s gonna be one of the first titles when Sony bring out the Oculus Rift for Playstation and they wanted some full-on uptempo music for it. We submitted four tunes and they picked one, which is really cool because we had a tune on the original Wipe Out back in the day. Have you got anything else in the pipeline? Basically we need to get some new music done. We’ve hooked up with this company in America that do music for trailers for Hollywood blockbusters. They’re called Pusher Music and they do the music on YouTube trailers, the big epic soundscapes. We’ve done about three or four bits of music that we’re trying to pitch to them. We’re both into big epic soundtracks and we’re looking for other things we can do that are cool in the music industry. We still want to put out singles and stuff but it would be cool to do music that’s not necessarily in that industry.
“
He’s catering for everyone in this Bradford scene, which I think is wicked.

Competition and camaraderie in spring sunshine By Mike Farren There are days when Centenary Square seems just a large, lovely but empty space at the centre of the city. And then there are days when it feels like its beating heart. Today was one of the latter, as over 1,000 runners (including me) gathered for the ninth Bradford Epilepsy Action 10K run Early morning grey had turned to delicate blue as the race was started by Bradford’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Joanne Dodds, who was also competing along with her son. She commented that she was the first mayor to start two races, after last year’s event was postponed until September. No sooner were we around the first corner than the sun came out for a glorious spring morning, perhaps even slightly warmer than the frontrunners might have wished. However it raised the spirits almost as much as the architecture of Little Germany for the early climb of the mostly flat course. There’s no denying this is a road race, sticking mostly to the Canal and Shipley-Airedale Roads and after Little Germany there isn’t much scenery to enjoy. However it’s a fast run that’s good for personal bests even if, for this runner,
it seemed the organisers had placed increasing distances between the kilometre markers! Despite high hopes the course record of 31 minutes two seconds remained unchallenged, with winner Joe Sagar coming home in 32 minutes 58 seconds. More importantly over £25,000 has been raised to support the charity. As someone who came late to competitive running, I harbour few illusions about my limits and abilities. I’m well aware that I’m only competing against myself, and achieving a personal best is more about measuring how well my efforts are able to stand against the ravages of time. Having belatedly joined a running group - Saltaire Striders - there’s an added camaraderie to runs like these, and with a course that went from the centre of my city (almost) to my current home, the event was a wonderful experience as much for the sense of community as for the race itself. I’ll be back next year, hoping to improve on my new personal best (53 minutes 34 seconds, if you’re interested). Why don’t you do the same?
Top: 100s of eager runners prepare to cross the start line in Centenary Square. Bottom: Me crossing the line rather nonchelantly

Picks of the month Red Hippo @ Topic Folk Club Red Hippo, performing at the Topic Folk Club on Thursday 14 April, are a stunning mix of sousaphone, Irish whistles, saxophones and strings. They explore a musical world influenced by traditional folk music with jazz-influenced arrangements. The three excellent musicians who make up the band, including the almost legendary Peadar Long, create an exciting clash of sound that appeals across the board. The differing styles are interwoven into a unique musical form, deceptively intelligent, yet utterly accessible, delivered with wit and humour. Memorable in sound, appearance and enthusiasm they have already performed at many major festivals including Towersey, Sidmouth, Beverley, Marsden and Musicport.

India’s Gateway:
Silent Movie: Joan of Arc
India’s Gateway is a major new exhibition that weaves together photographs, film and people’s stories to explore the fascinating story of Gujarat and Mumbai as age-old centres of trade and migration, focusing on their links with Britain.
Silent film with with live improvisation by Jonathan Eyre on the organ. One of the most emotional film experiences of any era, Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 The Passion of Joan of Arc is a miracle of the cinema, an enigmatic and profoundly moving work that merges the worlds of the viewer and of saintly Joan herself into one shared experience of hushed delirium.
Textiles and Threads
The main part of the exhibition will be shown at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford, from 20 March to 3 July 2016. Gallery II will also be displaying the section of the show exploring the textile industry in Gujarat Thursday 24 March - Thursday 2 June. Both venues will be leading an innovative programme of work involving local artists and communities who will make their own contributions to the show.
The portrayal of Joan by Renée Maria Falconetti is frequently heralded as the alltime finest performance in the history of film, and Dreyer’s unusual and virtuosic methods vaulted the director decisively into the ranks of the art form’s supreme geniuses. 7pm, Bradford Cathedral, tickets £8 on the door or from the Cathedral Office.

The set was built for Ellen Kent in England by Setup Scenery, who also build sets for the Royal Opera Covent Garden.

Contained is a vibrant, compelling and personal show featuring a cast of nine learning-disabled performers (including Coronation Street’s Liam Bairstow) telling true stories about family and friendships, love and loss, the everyday and the extraordinary.
