In the news Bradford Pride to go ahead at Odsal Businesses in Bradford have rallied around to save the city’s historic Pride event, which was unexpectedly cancelled by the organisers recently. Representatives from businesses including Flares Bradford, The Sun Hotel, Baxter Training, and nightclubs Candy and The Lemon Shed are all working with the council, Bradford licensing and the local LGBT society, Equity, to ensure the event goes ahead as planned. The Bradford Bulls Stadium has been confirmed as the venue for the event, which is due to go ahead on the original date of 28 May. The managers of the venue, Provident Stadiums, have also agreed to provide the bars, staging, and security free of charge, saving the committee thousands of pounds.
Listening to the hidden Women of the World Bradford Beck Festival The Friends of Bradford’s Becks are holding a design competition for a piece of public art which will they hope will generate interest in and empathy for the imprisoned Bradford Beck. A unique ‘listening sculpture’ will reflect Bradford’s pride, history and culture – as well as allowing people to hear the Beck below. The plan is to erect the sculpture in the pedestrianised area in Tyrell St.
London’s Southbank Centre has announced that Bradford will be the first of nine cities to host its Women of the World Festival.
To be eligible to enter, artists must live, work or exhibit within the catchments of the Yorkshire rivers and thanks to the generosity of Judith Yaxley, one of the members, a prize of £2,000 will be given to the winning artist.
Founded in 2011, WOW Women of the World is the world’s largest festival network of its kind, reaching over a million people across five continents. Each festival – made up of various talks, debates, music, activism, comedy, workshops, mentoring, pop ups and major concerts – celebrates women and girls, takes a frank look at what prevents them from achieving their potential, raises awareness globally of the issues they face and discusses possible solutions.
The competition will be launched on Friday 29 April 2016, and closes on Friday 29 July 2016. The panel of judges will interview finalists on 7 September 2016 and the results will be announced on 25 September 2016, World Rivers Day.
Participants will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about what WOW in Bradford should look like and include during a series of Thinkin planning sessions in May 2016, with details available on Twitter at @ wow_bradford in the coming weeks

Reinventing
Bradford City By Haigh Simpson
Writer Jason McKeown will be familiar to many Bradford City fans as the editor and creator of the award winning Width of a Post blog, which has provided essential reading for any City fan worth their salt for over a decade. His latest project is a book charting the dramatic modern history of the club, from the trauma of the 1985 Valley Parade fire through to the recent cup heroics via Premier League indulgence and financial ruin. The book uses a series of interviews with key figures such as Stuart McCall, Phil Parkinson, Julian Rhodes and Mark Ellis to reflect on 12 games that have shaped the club’s recent past. Tell us about the book, what’s the idea behind it? The book looks at the modern history of Bradford City Football Club – a period of some incredible ups and downs. In May 1985 there was the dreadful Valley Parade
fire which had such an emotional impact on the club and its supporters. This is what happened next and, to me, it is some story. Bradford City were left homeless for a period, while Valley Parade was rebuilt, which led to the unusual situation of the club playing at Odsal stadium for just over a year. This was a very good team and in 1988 Bradford City so nearly reached the top flight of English football for the first time since the 1920s. They just missed out, lost their star players and fell into decline again. With the Premier League forming in the early 90s, it really looked as though City had missed out on the big time. But the drama was only just getting started, as in 1994 Geoffrey Richmond took over the club and promised Premier League football in five years’ time. He succeeded too, via some incredible games like a playoff victory at Blackpool and a promotionsealing Premier League win at Wolves. The first time in 77 years that Bradford
Jason McKeown with former City winger Mark Ellis, who contributed to Reinventing Bradford City
City
were
playing
top-flight
football.
The rollercoaster continued. Richmond overstretched the club and the fall began. Relegations and administrations told only half the story. Within six years City was a bottom tier club that twice came close to going out of existence. They were such difficult times. And then more recently of have the club’s rise and rise Parkinson, via two appearances stadium and all manner of
course we under Phil at Wembley cup upsets.
The last 30 years have been the most dramatic in the club’s history, and I wanted to tell the story of this era of highs and lows. How did you go about putting it together? I quickly decided the best way of telling
the story of 1986-2016 was to select the most significant games from that era. I whittled it down to a 12-game shortlist, spaced out over those 30 years and telling of the extremes City has gone through. Some games were obvious to select – the match at Wolves that sealed promotion to the Premier League in 1999, the epic night at Villa Park where City reached the League Cup Final in 2013 – whilst others were chosen for how they represented a certain period. The games are the anchors, around which I focussed the story of what was happening at the club at the time. I wanted to write only about those headline events from the past 30 years – good and bad. In my head I saw it as a conversation in a pub between a group of City-supporting friends.

“
They say you should never meet your heroes, but McCall the person proved to be everything I hoped he’d be and more.
The games and moments you would reminisce about, with fondness and anger and despair. The other key element was interviewing the people involved and getting them to share their memories. In total I interviewed around 30 people. They included players, managers, board members, chairmen, journalists and fans. I wanted to feature a wide spectrum of opinions and perspectives, as I thought this would help bring to life the games and the stories around them. What was it like to interview some of your idols? It was definitely the best part! I approached lots of people and everyone involved was so helpful and enthusiastic – like me they just loved talking about Bradford City! The interviews included people like Mark Ellis, Lee Duxbury, Terry Dolan, Jamie Lawrence, Michael Flynn, Julian Rhodes, James Hanson, David Baldwin, James Mason, Simon Parker and David Markham. Securing a chat with Andrew Davies felt like an early big moment. He’d just left City for Ross County and was brilliant to speak with. He was disappointed at the way he had been allowed to leave Valley Parade and was very honest about it, before reflecting on happier times at the club. It was obvious right from the start that Phil Parkinson and Stuart McCall had to feature in the book, given their influence on the past 30 years. The club were very helpful in giving me access to speak to Phil Parkinson. He forgave my clumsy first question and talked
openly and engagingly about his time at City. He explained the intentions he had when he had taken over, how he implemented his longterm strategy and the need to bring in the right players. We reminisced about Wigan, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Wembley, the play-off push, Wembley again, Halifax, Millwall and Chelsea. Getting Stuart McCall was tougher but I got there in the end. They say you should never meet your heroes, but McCall the person proved to be everything I hoped he’d be and more. An absolute gent, with such an admirable level of love and affection for Bradford City. We chatted about his breakthrough in the 80s, the fire, Odsal and the ‘nearly’ season. About how painful it was to leave Bradford City in 1988. We moved on to talk about his glorious return 10 years later, with promotion to the Premier League. As someone for whom the 1998/99 season means the world, I will forever treasure the opportunity I was given to sit down and reminisce about that team with one of its central characters. I then started to ask McCall about his time as manager. He jumped to his feet, shook my hand and said goodbye, before running towards the exit.. and then returning, laughing! It’s good to see that Stuart has a sense of humour about that difficult third spell at the club. When we finally went through this period, the frustration and pain he felt at not succeeding was obvious. Nevertheless, you could tell that he had long since found closure and moved on. Is there a particular game or interview in the book that stands out for you? I’d like to think that fans of all ages will
enjoy every game and story that I cover – even if they weren’t supporting City in the 80s or 90s. I myself only started supporting City in 1997, but I found researching and writing about the games that took place before that really interesting. The John Docherty era of the early 1990s for example, is something I think any City fan who complains about Parkinson should read. Docherty was unpopular in a way no other City manager I have known has achieved – which is saying something! I was left wondering how he would have coped in the modern times of social media! The more recent stuff I think is worth reading too. I really enjoyed asking Parkinson about the strategy and key moments in games such as Aston Villa, Northampton in the play-off final, and Wembley. I think he gives a really good insight into his thinking and confidence on those big occasions, a major reason the club reached such dizzy heights. Are City going up this season? That’s a tough one! My heart says we are, and my head can’t make its mind up! I think we have a fantastic opportunity and certainly should be confident of sealing a play-off place. I feel the automatic promotion places are beyond us. In the play-offs I would be confident of City winning a Wembley final, but the semifinals themselves would be a much tougher proposition in my view. But then Parkinson has so often won the big games at City that you wouldn’t bet against him pulling it off. One thing is for sure - I don’t think our play-off opponents would relish facing us.

The Lord Mayor's Appeal
dragonboat Festival By Haigh Simpson
On Saturday 7 May over 40 teams, 500 competitors and around 30,000 spectators will descend upon Roberts Park, Saltaire for the second annual Lord Mayor’s Appeal Dragonboat Festival. The event made its debut last year and was a huge hit with crowds and competitors, despite bad weather threatening to disrupt proceedings. Now it’s back for a second year as it looks to become a major part of Bradford’s cultural calendar.
We already have 35 teams signed up and strong interest from at least 10 more. We’ve also got a lot more traders coming along and we’ll have a lot more attractions on the day, particularly for children. So we’re expecting something closer to 30,000 spectators this year.”
Festival organiser and dragonboat enthusiast John Galt has been involved with the sport for over 30 years and was part of the first ever team to cross the English Channel using a dragonboat. His passion for the sport is contagious and last year’s event was a culmination of over four years of planning and negotiations.
“The beauty of that people don’t to take part. They to have fun and
“Last year we had 22 teams competing and it’s been estimated that between 8,000 and 10,000 people turned up on the day to watch or to take part. This year we’re going to go even bigger.
The event is to raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and last year raised over £10,000 through sponsorship, advertising and entry fees. It’s the latest in a long line of fundraising. dragonboat racing is need any experience just need the capacity enjoy the occasion.”
“The aim is to get as many people involved as we can. We’re putting on huge events with zero budget and we’re hoping to raise a significant amount of money. Every single person who has come onboard is doing it as a volunteer and we are looking to get as many people involved as possible.”
While the racing is often a competitive affair, fancy dress is always encouraged
John admits he was surprised how much interest there was in last year’s event, “The first year was supposed to be all about the actual dragonboat racing but as preparations went along we kept on getting requests from various people wanting to get involved and broaden the appeal. This year we have fully embraced that and made it as much of an event as we possibly can. I think we have pretty much hit ceiling capacity in terms of what we can deliver.” With such huge numbers in attendance John and his team have had to figure out a safe way for people to watch the racing without overcrowding the river bank or canal towpath. So a big screen will once again be erected in the park showing all the live action. “It allows people to stay in the main body of the park, but it will also be linked up to the big screen in City Park, so people can watch in
Bradford city centre too. For me it’s all about the experience, which is why we’re creating an environment where it’s as enjoyable for the spectators as it is for the people taking part.” The event has attracted entries from a range of local businesses, groups and organisations including the Shipley & Saltaire Wellness Centre, Napoleon’s Casino and the Fox pub in Shipley. Although there is a competitive side to the event John is keen to point out that it’s mainly about having fun, “Everyone really goes for it in the races but the general atmosphere is very friendly. A lot of the teams come in fancy dress and it’s a great fun and enjoyable event for everyone involved.” With just weeks to go to the event everything seems to be in place for a fantastic festival.

In love with
literature Syima Aslam and Irna Qureshi discuss the 2016 Bradford Literature Festival
For a city steeped in cultural and literary heritage, it’s a wonder the Bradford Literature Festival didn’t come about sooner than it did. But these things don’t happen by themselves and it took the inspiration and perseverance of best friends Irna Qureshi and Syima Aslam to make last year’s maiden event happen. The festival aimed to celebrate literature, diversity and culture, bringing national and international acts to Bradford and showcasing Bradford’s talent, heritage and landscape to the rest of the world. It proved to be a huge success and the event is back this month to dish out a second helping of literary delights. 200 events spread across 10 days will showcase over 350 artists, writers, performers and experts and cover a number of themes from superheroes to Shakespeare. We met up with Syima and Irna at their busy festival office on the Bradford University Campus, amid final preparations for this year’s hugely ambitious event. How are preparations coming along? Irna Qureshi - They are coming along really well. Every year is a massive learning curve and we have really grown this year. Last year was the first time we had done the event so it’s quite nice to be in this position, having a good understanding of what we are doing differently and why we are doing it differently. And also, the response we are getting is phenomenal. What can people expect from this year’s event? IQ – Book events, workshops, lots of poetry –
Sacred Poetry, Political Poetry and even Mildly Erotic Poetry. The festival is multi-genre so we’ve got some lovely shows programmed at Theatre in the Mill. We’re screening films for all tastes. We love programming in themes so we’re celebrating all things to do with comics and manga one weekend, then we have a celebration of the Brontes on another weekend. There’s a strand on Mysticism and Philosophy which includes a Sufi whirling workshop that we’re really excited about. We’ve also got some amazing free events for families in City Park over the two weekends – a Superheroes day, a Fairy Tales day, as well as a day devoted to Harry Potter. There will be film screenings, a Battle of the Wizards show and irresistible drop-in workshops that include spell writing and potion making. Cannot wait! How do you go about programming the festival? SA - Irna and I have quite unique and different perspectives - we come from very different angles - and I think that’s why we have such a range of events So I think as a team we work really well together. IQ - Programming the festival is so much fun. It is pure and utter indulgence! Who is the festival aimed at? SA - We hope the festival has something for everyone and we are really keen to make it as accessible as we can. We have worked hard to make sure the event is socially inclusive and to make sure that cost isn’t a barrier. So we are offering free tickets and subsidies to students, pensioners, refugees, asylum seekers and anybody who is on benefits. It’s really important that the festival is accessible to all of Bradford.
21
How did you both come to be involved in the festival/how did the festival come about? IQ - We were really good friends, both of us massive consumers of culture and we wanted to see amazing events right here in Bradford. SA- There was also an element of us thinking that we could do a much better job of putting these events on than some of the places we were going to see them. And the city itself needed something like this too...A cultural regeneration to go alongside the economic regeneration. That was a big part of this as well. It was also about creating excitement around reading for young people as we are both strong believers that education has the power to change people’s lives. What does it mean to Bradford to have an event like this? IQ - Being so acutely aware of the stereotypes about Bradford, about women in Bradford, about who lives in Bradford and who doesn’t live here, we really wanted to create a festival that would dispel those stereotypes, turn that narrative on its head and generate positive headlines for the city. SA - There is also a desperate need in this day and age for spaces where people can come together and debate, and that’s an important part of the festival. The aim of this is to create an International destination festival in Bradford. How do you assess last year’s event and are there any things you are looking at changing/improving this year? IQ - We had very high expectations and
we keep moving our own goalposts. Last year was a massive learning curve and in a way it raised our expectations as it made us aware how much more there is that we can do. It was a really invigorating experience. SA - It was a springboard for this year. We had a very definite idea and a real vision for what we wanted to create and the first year gave us a real confidence boost that our vision had managed to stack up. We don’t programme by committee; it’s just the two of us putting our ideas together so until you put it out there, you don’t really know how it’s going to be received. What are the biggest challenges in putting something like this on? SA - Things like this require funding and I think for any organisation like this, that is always a challenge that you have to meet. And it’s also a challenge to try and create something that is going to engage and appeal to a wide audience. But it’s one we embrace. Is there anything in particular you are looking forward to seeing or taking part in? IQ- The Lyrical Mehfil! I can’t put my finger on what it is but there is just something about that event. It always sells out and the buzz is just quite phenomenal. The anticipation as you wait for the headliner just builds and builds and it really is a very special evening. And this year we’ve got the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, so I definitely don’t want to miss that! SA - I think my three picks would be the Lyrical Mehfil, Mysticism and the Works of Blake, and the Comics Creatrix.
Festival directors Syima Aslam (left) and Irna Qureshi (right)
Is there a strong local element to the programming? IQ - When we first started I had a really strong sense of the talent pool that we have locally. But it is astounding how much more has emerged in that time. Every week we get emails from artists and writers telling us about their work. We’ve got a long list of people who we are planning to meet once the festival is out of the way with a view to getting them involved next year. Whether it’s artists making comics or poets writing in Polish or Gujarati or English, it’s phenomenal. Bradford might be a small place but there are a lot of artists and writers here who have
been making work and feeding it into other places, so they may not be connected into the local arts scene. That’s just really exciting. This year we have lots of national and international artists, but a huge proportion are local, which is brilliant, especially given the fact that quality always comes first with our programming. To be able to feature local artists in the festival who stand up against world renowned names is brilliant. The Bradford Literature Festival runs from the 20th to 29th May and tickets are available from www. bradfordliteraturefestival.co.uk.

Threadfest Independent art and music festival returns for a fifth year By Andy Abbott
2016 will be the fifth year of Threadfest, the festival of independent art and music set up via the University of Bradford to pull together and celebrate the city’s underground and hard-to-find music. Over the years it’s developed artistically and secured a strong reputation with leftfield music and arts audiences. The Guardian listed it in their best metropolitan festivals guide and The Wire are big fans, mentioning it in their roundup of the best of the UK scene in 2015. Last year saw Finnish progressive metallers Circle play on stage alongside Bradfordian qawwali groups, Yorkshire folk legends, Italian free jazzers and hardcore punkers. People travelled from all over the UK and beyond to spend a few days at Bradford Playhouse, with rave reviews and lots of social media love for our oft-misunderstood city. Threadfest 2016 aims to further explore the diverse,
collaborative and participatory elements of the underground with events across Bradford culminating Spring Bank Holiday 27-29 May. Do-It-Yourself and independent culture creates spaces in which questions around who takes part, who’s represented, and how, can be asked. Whilst not-for-profit activity is often affordable, creating forums that a range of people can participate in together takes a lot of work. The aim of Threadfest 2016 is to highlight and celebrate these efforts as well as identify and address the challenges they face. The line-up for Threadfest 2016 touches on traversed boundaries, not just aesthetic and disciplinary but across age, race, class, gender, sexuality and ability. Activities include an evening of electronic music by women, the return of the Out There Sounds For All The Family matinee, locallegendary Dada cabaret Cafe Despard’s
Polish composer and musician Ela Orleans (left) London-based post-punk trio Ravioli Me Away (right)
memorial to singer and art college tutor Mary Johnston, loud queer night Out, an exhibition about migration and trade routes between India and the UK, and collaborations with Yorkshire Sound Women’s Network, refugee and disabled arts charities and more. Haworth 1940s Weekend By Rosie Sharp
Few events locally can be as jolly good fun as the ever-popular annual 1940s weekend in Haworth. Running from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 May, it’s a nostalgic celebration of all things 1940s and sees the picturesque village transported back to the wartime era. Bunting gaily lines the cobbled streets, men, women and children alike dress up in period costume and the music of the 1940s drifts on the warm(ish) breeze. Haworth park and the cobbles are taken over by period vehicles, re-enactments, live music, couples jitterbugging on the streets and vintage stalls selling wartime memorabilia and clothing. Now in its twenty-first year, and proud to raise funds for the armed forces charity SSAFA, the 1940s weekend has become a must-do event in the Haworth calendar and people flock from far and wide to join the trip down memory lane.
The atmosphere is electric, owing in part to the perceived romance of a bygone era and people feeling free to enjoy themselves in their 1940s persona. Be it land girl or femme fatale, pin curl or victory roll, there’ll always be a willing soldier to jive the night away with! Why not arrive in style by making use of the plentiful parking in Keighley and catching the steam train along to Haworth, courtesy of the Worth Valley Railway? You could then use the free vintage bus shuttle service that runs regularly throughout the event from Haworth station to the Parsonage car park at the top of the village. This year the organisers are proud and delighted to have Forces veteran Ben Parkinson as guest of honour, and attendance by a representative of the Lord Lieutenant. Keighley and District Model Aircraft Club will be displaying second world war model

aircraft and the famous swordsmith and writer Robert Pooley will be giving a free lecture on British Army swords since Waterloo. This will be one of his rare appearances other than at military locations, so if swords cut it for you, make sure you don’t miss this one. Other special events this year include the Moonlight Serenade 1940s dance on Friday 13 May at Haworth Community Centre, featuring the Ashby Big Band, DJ Dapper and other artists. The Putting Off The Blitz dance takes place on Saturday 14 at 7pm, also at Haworth Community Centre. The £12 tickets are available from Firth’s Boutique in Haworth or by emailing firthsboutique@live.co.uk Alternatively, enjoy an impromptu lindy hop and other dances at the bandstand in Haworth park on both afternoons. This is entirely free
and well worth gravitating towards as it’s often a weekend highlight. If all that dancing’s not your thing, you can always buy a local ale or coffee and soak up the atmosphere in the many fine pubs and cafes lining the streets. Rain or shine, wartime spirit prevails at this unique event and, with no rationing on fun, it’s a brilliant spectacle that mustn’t be missed. Further details can be found by visiting Haworth1940sweekend.co.uk or Haworth 1940s weekend Facebook page. The event is also on the look out for volunteers to help with with the event as Marshalls, Collectors and general helpers over the weekend. If you can donate some of your time on 15th-17th May 2015 please contact firthsboutique@live.co.uk

Join in Yorkshire’s Big Disco
Bradford vintage bus tour
Yorkshire Festival and Duke Studios have come together to create this unique and inspiring event that will see the world’s largest disco ball suspended from a crane in the city centre of Leeds, and they are inviting the whole of Yorkshire to #bepartofit with hundreds of little discos and, if you can make it, the disco to end all discos!
After the sell-out success of last year’s trip around the lost sports grounds of Bradford, a 2016 version will be running on Saturday 7 May.
DIY disco kits are available for people who want to organise their own little disco from nurseries and nursing homes, through community centres, to radio stations, offices, and everyone in between - 1 July 2016 will be remembered as the day Yorkshire threw a party and everyone was invited. To party at Yorkshire’s Big Disco in Leeds, or to register your very own Little Disco, visit www.thebigdisco.com
This year the vintage bus trip will take in the final resting places of some of Bradford’s most notable sporting personalities. It will also take in a game of crown green bowls, several opportunities to drink the finest real ales and enjoy a buffet tea. We will trundle around the cemeteries at Undercliffe, Bowling, Scholemoor and Heaton. Trippers will stand alongside the last resting places and hear the stories of some of Bradford’s greatest sporting personalities. Tickets priced at £10 are available from the Record Cafe.
