In the news Broadway shopping centre set to open It may have been a decade in the making but on 5 November Bradford’s Broadway development finally opens its doors with X-Factor star Alexandra Burke taking on the ribbon cutting duties. The £260 million development has already begun to have a positive effect on footfall and trade in the city centre as curiosity grows. The 570,000 sq ft shopping centre will host over 70 retail units including Debenhams, Marks and Spencer, Next and Topshop as well as a food court with Taco Bell, Wrap Chic, Spud U Like and Subway. Plans are also in place to redevelop and upgrade the surrounding streets with a vision that includes a strong restaurant and food offer in the area. The launch event will begin at 10am on 5 November, with 300 VIP guests invited to a private viewing, before the centre opens to the public with a weekend of events planned.
Brew Haus completes west end regeneration
City Park pulls in the plaudits
The rejuvenation of Bradford’s West End will be completed this month when Brew Haus opens its doors to become the fourth new venue since September. The venue will offer a range of brewed craft beers, cocktails, pies, pizzas, poutines and fresh salads. But more importantly it represents the start of a new era for a corner of Bradford that has been crying out for investment for several years.
Bradford’s City Park will receive international recognition as part of a major touring exhibition of innovative urban open spaces. Rethinking The Urban Landscape will see City Park featured alongside over 40 spaces, including London’s 2012 Olympic Park and Singapore’s Gardens, as a shining example of contemporary design.
Other venues to have opened on Randall Well Street in the past few months include a German style Bierkeller, the Tiki-O cocktail bar and state-of-the-art nightclub Circle. The developments have seen a combined investment well over the £1 million mark and are said to have generated over 80 jobs. Circle has already become a big hit with the student population thanks to headline sets from the likes of Example, and together the bars offer a long-awaited boost to Bradford’s nighttime economy.
The exhibition is intended to highlight the importance urban spaces can play in creating a healthier and happier population. The £24 million development drew criticism when it was announced, although recent reports have suggested the park could now be generating over £80 million a year for the city’s economy. Rethinking The Urban Landscape will visit Leeds Beckett University from 5-20 November and Sheffield Winter Garden from 23 November to 13 December.

North Parade in the running for national award By Haigh Simpson
In 2011 Les Hall and Marko Husak decided to open a brand new cafe-style bar on Bradford’s North Parade. They were taking a huge risk. North Parade was a struggling street on the fringes of a city suffering from low occupancy rates and falling trade. The potential was there but few would have predicted the transformation over the next four years. The Sparrow was an instant hit with Bradfordians looking for something a bit different and quickly became the city’s zeitgeist venue. It was the catalyst the street was crying out for and provided the inspiration and confidence for a string of independent venues to follow suit and open up in the area. North Parade is now firmly established as a destination in its own right and hoping to make a mark as it competes for Britain’s Best City Location at the Great British High Street Awards. That’s some rise. We caught up with City Centre Manager Jonny Noble, Sparrow owner Les Hall and Record Cafe supremo Keith Wildman to reflect on the street’s success story and see how the award nomination came about. “Some time ago we were made aware of the Great British High Street Awards, which celebrate the areas of towns and cities that have shown imagination, creativity and improvement,” said Jonny, “We immediately thought of North Parade as a possible contender because of all the improvements and activity there over the last four years since the Sparrow opened.” With its hat in the ring North Parade quickly saw off dozens of entries, including Nottingham and Norwich, to reach the final shortlist. The street will now represent Bradford in a final showdown against Cambridge and Northampton, with a public vote deciding 50% of the outcome. Voting closes on 13 November and although Bradford is off to a good start already the team are looking for a big push as the deadline approaches.
11
“The closing date for voting is almost upon us so we’re now at the final push stage. Over the past month social media campaigns using the hashtag #GBHighstreet have encouraged Bradford residents to vote for North Parade, with 50% of the outcome being decided on the public vote,” pointed out Jonny. He is confident that Bradford can at least secure the first half of the process with a strong final push. “In the first weekend of voting there were 25,000 votes cast. I’d like to think that because of the strength behind the North Parade family and the work we’ve done already that we’ll be looking strong in the voting process.” “We’ve been working hard on social media and we want to encourage as many people as possible to get behind the campaign and vote for Bradford. The voting process is unusual in that you can vote once a day every day for every email address you use so it’s an ongoing thing until we reach that deadline.” The second half of the award process will be decided by a judging panel who will visit and assess each of the contenders. Johnny admits it’s difficult to know what the judges will be looking for, but he’s confident North Parade will impress, “We really need to wow the judges and make sure the street is looking as good as it possibly can do. Let’s hope they enjoy a drink too!” The incentive, other than a great sense of civic pride of course, is a prize pool of £80,000, which will be shared across the categories. This will amount to around £10,000 for each winner as well as a digital masterclass from Google, who will visit the winners and help them develop their digital strategies. There’s also the publicity element which Jonny is keen to highlight, “It’s not just the financial incentive, it’s more positivity and good news for the city centre.” Despite Bradford’s confident start to the campaign, the team are being careful not to jump the gun and are holding off making plans on how to spend

The Record Cafe specializes in good beer, continental hams and vinyl records the winnings. “We haven’t made any plans at all yet - we don’t want to count our chickens, and if we do win it’s something that deserves the input of all the retailers.” said Jonny. Some early ideas mooted have been improvements to the North Parade Street Party to take some of the strain off the business owners who currently run the event. “The prize money would give us the option to bring in an events team to run the street party, which is currently organised by the retailers themselves on top of their regular business. Whatever the outcome it would need to demonstrate a positive economic effect on both the city centre and North Parade.” However, Record Cafe owner Keith Wildman has other ideas, “There’s what I think would work really well, and then what I think would be
really cool. What would be really cool would be a giant statue of Phil Parkinson. I think that would be superb. However, if I have to be serious I’m always happy to see things that improve the look of the street, whether that’s cleaning up the buildings or lighting up the trees.” The emergence of North Parade has undoubtedly become one of Bradford’s great success stories from the past decade and something Jonny is pleased to see seeping out into the wider area. “When Les and Marko opened The Sparrow back in 2011 there was a 30% vacancy rate on this street - now we’re down to about 7%. Bearing in mind that the city centre vacancy rate is about 19% that represents a massive achievement.” “Confidence breeds confidence and the way the guys work together here is testament to

Sparrow owner Les Hall, City Centre Manager Jonny Noble and Record Cafe owner Keith Wildman that collaborative approach. I was here at the Sparrow last night and people were ordering pizza from Mamma Mia’s round the corner to eat in the bar. Recently we had the Little Lights Nights with Les and Keith working together to run an outdoor bar. I think it’s a really effective approach and the new bars on the West End can learn a lot from how those on North Parade operate. There’s no rivalry here because they all understand how important it is to work together.” I ask Les Hall what makes North Parade stand out and why it deserves this award. “I think it’s the independence - having a strong collection of independent businesses makes it easier to get along and work together. It’s important to remember that there were a lot of independents here long before The Sparrow came along. People like Mamma Mia, Bradford Camera Exchange and Cafe Bleu who have toughed it out here for years.”
In terms of the future, Les would like to see the street continue to grow its appeal and reach out to new visitors. “I think we need to continue doing what we’re doing but try to involve and encourage those people who have stopped coming into Bradford. It’s brilliant that we’ve been able to build up a strong regular clientele but it’s also great when a stranger walks in because it means they’re trying something new.” It’s an inspiring message. After all, it was trying something new that got North Parade to where it is now. The second phase of the city’s successful Growth Zone Scheme has just been launched, with over £1.5 million of funding being released to encourage property and business improvements in priority areas. The scheme will aim to attract new businesses and other organisations into areas such as Darley Street, which will be hit hardest by the opening of the Broadway development. Funding will be available to businesses which bring empty ground floor commercial space back into use in the priority areas and are looking to invest in property improvements or new machinery. Mike Cowlam, the strategic director of Bradford’s Department of Regeneration, said, “Whilst recognising the significant progress that’s being made, it’s also clear that the city centre faces challenges to build on this momentum, including bringing vacant properties back into use, addressing the number of empty upper floors in many city centre properties, restoring pride in the city centre and tackling anti-social behaviour.” However businesses who do wish to apply will need to demonstrate that the investment will contribute to the economic and commercial diversity of the city centre. This will be either through job creation or being able to demonstrate real market potential. The first part of the scheme saw over £5 million ploughed into over 100 new and existing businesses, such as Artz-i (Kirkgate), Avoriya (Darley Street), Forks Cafe (North Parade) and Cafe Jinnah (Leeds Road), and generated over 300 new jobs in the city centre. Moreover it saw an influx of fresh ideas and a new wave of independent businesses that have gone a long way to improving the city. Those businesses which have already benefited from the scheme won’t be eligible for further funding, but the hope is that their success will inspire others to follow suit.
City set for second wave of growth zone funding By Haigh Simpson
In an attempt to encourage diversity in the city centre certain businesses such as betting shops and amusement arcades have been made ineligible, while priority will be given to businesses in high growth sectors, leisure and retail and the financial, legal, business and professional services. Successful applicants will also benefit from up to £16,000 worth of business rate rebate per new full time equivalent job created, which will act as a huge incentive for new businesses and those looking to expand. The rebate period will last up to March 2017, providing the criteria continue to be met.

New calendar captures raw emotion of female fans By Haigh Simpson
23
Around 20 years ago Nudrat Afza was given a camera and started taking photographs of people and places in her local neighbourhood of Manningham. She still uses this camera today to create striking and powerful representations of modern society. Her latest project is a calendar portraying female supporters at Bradford City Football Club. Can you explain the idea behind your calendar? A couple of years ago two friends asked my daughter Khadijah, who has a life-threatening condition and learning difficulties, to go to a Bradford City football match. As her full-time carer I had to accompany her and so finally I went to my first football match. As we walked towards the ground I felt as if a magnet was pulling me, and I had no control over this feeling. The amber and claret uniformity of people walking towards the football ground felt very moving and poignant. Some of the chants that supporters sang sounded like hymns. I grew up near Valley Parade in Manningham and had never been to see a football game. Now it was my daughter who led me by my hand up the the steps to our steeply banked seats. She was confident, and had a sense of purpose as she guided me. Our usual roles were reversed. The atmosphere was amazing, people were so friendly and it was a wonderful experience. I expected it to be all men but there were all these fantastic, committed women, girls cheering for the team. It was during this time that the idea of taking photographs developed. Was there a particular reason you wanted to focus on female supporters? I know things have changed, but just a little! It is still a game dominated by men at every level, including in the ground, at management level, the presenters and of course in the media.

When I first went to Bradford City I couldn’t believe how many beautiful women and girls there were in the crowd. And they were every bit as involved in the action as the men. I had to photograph them. I wanted to capture the beauty of the female football fans at Bradford and their enthusiasm and passion. The photographs were taken between January, just after the magical Chelsea match, and April this year. Do you have a favourite image from the the collection and if so why? I don’t have a favourite, I like all of them for different reasons. They show the different aspects and, importantly, emotions of being a
supporter. What is your relationship with Bradford City Football Club now? I started off by taking pictures outside the football ground. Bradford City Football Club has so kindly given me a press pass to go inside the ground to take the photos. I am very excited about this and I hope to take some more pictures during the home matches in this new season. I’m a new fan and now a proud season ticket holder! The calendar is available to buy for £12.50 from the reception desk at Bradford City Football Club with some of the proceeds going to charity.

A
selection of community and student actors gathered at the Bradford Playhouse on a Friday evening to discover what production they had to put on - at only 24 hours notice. Until that Friday the cast and crew were given no indication of what they would have just one day to build, from learning lines and songs to creating the props, though the organisers – including Playhouse staff and the University of Bradford’s operettas and musicals society – did have six months to do some groundwork. With the production revealed as an adaptation of Tim Burton’s 1993 stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas the team had just 24 hours to prepare. For those who haven’t seen the film, the Pumpkin King Jack Skellington stumbles across the world of Christmas and decides to bring the festivity to his Hallowe’en home. The ghosts and ghouls don’t quite get the concept of the celebration and soon chaos descends as Santa Claus (or Sandy Claws, as they think) is kidnapped. With both worlds under threat, can Jack save Christmas? Naturally, due to the time limits and nature of the production, the show was most notable for how the cast coped with the demands of learning the material and though there were plenty of scripts on show, plus missed lines and awkward cues, the cast took the concepts of a 24-hour show and produced humour out of the nature of the beast. The central role of Jack Skellington was taken by three actors in turn to play the character in full make-up. Carys Nevard was the best of the three, her tackling of the songs was strong and her knowledge of the lines great, and she was closely followed by Lucy Stephenson and Johnnie Taylor. But it was mainly in the ensemble cast where the highlights were to be

found. Chris Hields spent the entire production in a black body stocking with the sock puppet representing Jack’s spectral dog Zero on his arm, and his interpretative dance, efforts to remain invisible and attempts to follow the chaotic action were never less than hilarious, in particular when something went wrong and he stormed comically off the stage and then back to the other side. Ivan Causey as the Mayor brought some of the manic energy from his role as the lead in last year’s Moby Dick and his exuberance reflected the movie role very well. The always-watchable Anna Garlick as the wheelchair-bound Dr. Finklestein, complete with exposed brain, was another highlight of the madcap show, her adlibbing and inability to move a wheelchair without crashing into props and the wings both equal in terms of well-managed laughter. Always

best when embodying a character, Garlick was on great form. Elsewhere Lyndsey Niven as love interest Sally, covered in blue body-paint, delivered the slickest performance of the evening, her professionalism and line-learning shining through as well as her songs and her ability to tweak lights to reflect the nature of the play. Martin McCulley as the narrator had a smaller part but his adlibs were well done, and Catrina Lodge made a very memorable police officer with a particularly funny moment with a moving spotlight. As the kidnapped Santa Claus Mick Waterhouse felt the least prepared of all the actors, his slightly creepy and drunken Sandy Claws still very funny to watch as he broke the fourth wall many times, and Joe Burke as Oogie Boogie worked off him well. Finally, David Preece, Joanne Brotherton and Chloe Young were Lock, Shock and Barrel and illuminated moments throughout the piece, especially Preece whose acting and mannerisms were spot on and very funny. The Bradford Playhouse’s 24 Hour Show was anything but a slick affair - by its very nature there were lots of missed lines, visible scripts aplenty, cues written on hands and props, and songs where it was difficult to hear the vocals. That said, the appeal of the show came from the cast’s handling of the pressures of such a quick turnaround and everyone managed to approach the script and events with gusto and their tongues firmly in cheek. Highlights of the production included the tight opening song from the ensemble cast, the central song This Is Hallowe’en, and the great musical performance of the assembled band of Natalie Kershaw, Hannah Dixon and David Richards. , whether it was through crashing wheelchairs, technical director Paul West slyly delivering new pages of script to struggling actors, or the absurdity of the costumes and scenarios. For me it was Chris Hields in his silent but very visual performance as Zero who stole the show for the sheer laughs springing from the craziness of his role, but the cast uniformly tackled the incredible challenge well. Even if the final product was occasionally hard to follow and hear and naturally lacking the polish of a professional show it was a real laugh to watch, the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the tired cast shining through

Bradford Interchange was the unusual setting for Rav Sanghera’s new play Brief Encounters. The production took on a very local theme and the content was inspired by actual conversations picked up in places just like the Interchange. The hour-long production took the form of a tour around the site, each group of playgoers starting from different sections of the building and bumping into the brief encounters of the title, with characters flowing from conversation to conversation. Whether a pair of old friends exploring what it means to grow old and change to the soundtrack of Mel and Kim in the station waiting room, a frank discussion between strangers about life and mortality, or how first impressions aren’t always the correct ones between a second generation immigrant and a new asylum seeker, each vignette was a joy to watch. Brief Encounters was a very visual and involving production, with clever use of locations and space alongside observations about Bradford and immigration. Whether a tale of reluctant love told on a bus or a choir performing Embrace songs, the production was a constantly evolving and well captured series of conversations between people, finely performed by the ensemble actors and using locations to great effect, from the aforementioned bus to a touching discussion with a surprising twist in the ladies toilets. The fact that the action took place amongst the audience as if we were flies on the wall was very involving and added to the realistic and gritty performances It felt like a true exploration of characters and scenarios, culminating in a very surprising crescendo with a song at the end. The fact that it took place in and around the everyday activity of both stations added a fun twist as you tried to work out who was cast and who was commuter (even if a few eccentric or younger Bradfordians were occasionally a little too

keen on interrupting the production). This came along with visits to usually off-limits areas, and it’s kudos to Freedom Studios and the Interchange management team for making it happen. It’s difficult to highlight any particular contributors as standouts, as the ensemble cast were uniformly captivating to watch, but Florence Wilson and Jane Steele as the old friends reunited were a punchy start to the production, the touching moments between Julie Edwards and Dennis Conlon on the bus were heart-warming, and Emma Ashton and Stacey Sampson’s cubicle counselling the most thought-provoking of the sections. Mixing in humour with pathos and some genuine surprises, my hour-long experience in the company of the actors was time well spent. The warmth of the script and performances contrasted beautifully with the chilliness of the night, and the exploration of the building was a joy.

Dinosaur Zoo roars into town
Listen up vinyl lovers!
Back by popular demand on a tour of the UK, Dinosaur Zoo is bringing an impressive cast of prehistoric creatures including the famously ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex live to the stage of St George’s Hall, Bradford on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 November.
The Listen Up DJs are collectors or socalled diggers of rare vinyl. A habit that has grabbed more and more headlines as vinyl sales follow an upward trajectory.
Dinosaur Zoo creators ‘Erth’ use ingenious puppetry to bring dinosaurs to life in this interactive and imaginative live show, suitable for all the family (ages 3+). During the show the audience is introduced to a range of creatures, from cute baby dinos to teeth-gnashing giants. Intrepid audience members brave enough to get up close and personal with the dinosaurs are invited on stage to assist the Zoo Keeper. This does come with a warning that not all of these ravenous reptiles are as tame as they seem!
Their vinyl-only late-night Listen Up event has found its home in the cellar bar of the New Beehive Inn on Westgate in Bradford. A free night where you can expect to hear the sounds of 60s/70s vintage soul and funk blended with reggae or ska and more contemporary funk-influenced breaks and beats. A mix that is not lost on the busy dance floor of mixed ages. The Beehive adds a touch of speakeasy to the event with its low ceilings, even lower lighting and mixed crowd. Worth seeking out. Listen up is on 27 November at the Beehive Cellar Bar, Westgate, BD1 3AA.

Being black, British and female
Experiments In Photography
Selina Thompson presents Dark & Lovely, an interactive performance using memories, music, rum and a ‘tumbleweave’ installation to explore the connotations, history and politics of afro hair and what it means to be Black, British and Female in the UK today.
A new exhibition opens this month at the National Media Museum exploring the influence of early scientific photography on modern and contemporary art. Revelations: Experiments In Photography features some of the rarest images from the pioneers of photography.
Using recorded conversations with barbers, hair vendors and customers, feelgood music and written text, Selina explores the complexities of the social debate surrounding Black hair. She transforms the tumbleweave into something beautiful which can transcend the weight of all the connotations placed upon it. The performance was a huge hit when it premiered in a disused barber’s shop in Chapeltown, completing a weeklong sell-out run. Dark & Lovely will be on at Theatre in the Mill Bradford from Wednesday 25 – Saturday 28 November. Tickets from £6.
The beauty of these early images and the revolutionary techniques developed for scientific study shaped the history of photography and heavily influenced modern and contemporary art photographers. Revelations showcases photographic images by figures such as William Henry Fox Talbot and Eadweard Muybridge, alongside works by contemporary artists including Harold Edgerton and Hiroshi Sugimoto. The exhibition is free and will be showing from 20 November 2015 - 3 February 2016.
Pyvofest celebrates the best of Ukraine
Irish folk duo live at Glyde
PyvoFest – Bradford Ukrainian Club’s beer festival - returns on 6 and 7 November, and after two sold-out years the organisers have been working hard to ensure the third year continues to deliver. There’ll be a host of exciting beers never before seen in the UK, including the first-ever draught Ukrainian beers poured in this country.
Ireland comes to the Topic Folk Club this month as Fil Campbell & Tom McFarland take to the Glyde House stage on 19 November. Fil and Tom are a husband-andwife duo from County Down who perform a mixed programme of traditional and contemporary Irish songs accompanied by guitar and percussion. They present a lively evening of old and new material with plenty of choruses to join in.
But PyvoFest isn’t just about drinks, Ukrainian food, including varenyky, kobassa and chubaraky, is available throughout, with six live bands and Ukrainian dance group Orlyk showcasing the colours and athleticism of Ukrainian traditional dancing. PyvoFest runs over two nights. Friday’s Acoustic Night, featuring a Ukrainian male choir and headline performance by Jen Armstrong, kicks off at 6.30pm on Friday 6 November, tickets are £3 and include a commemorative glass and programme.
The duo have been regular performers on the UK and European folk circuits since the mid-1990s and have played at some of the most prestigious folk clubs in Ireland, Scotland, England, Holland and Germany as well as touring several times in America, France and Denmark. They’ve also performed at many folk festivals in Ireland and across the UK and Europe.
