Your guide to the best food & drink in the Bradford District We’ve been busy behind the scenes making sure this is the best guide we’ve ever produced, with loads of new features and plenty of new venues for you to try. Two years on from our last guide, we are pleased to present Eat Drink Bradford volume 3. It’s been a long time coming, but its certainly not been time wasted. Following the release of our second guide we knew we had created something that people liked, but we felt it had huge potential to be more than just a printed directory guide. So we have been busy developing the Eat Drink brand and thinking of cool things we can do to make the guides more relevant, interesting and user friendly.
Introduction
We’ve expanded our network, launched the guides online and improved the design and features of the printed publication. We now have a fantastic platform to grow year on year and have a genuine positive impact on Bradford’s food and drink scene.
We’re sure the guide will help you and your friends discover new places to eat and drink and that you can take as much pride as we do in Bradford’s unique food and drink scene. The guide features over 50 of the best restaurants, cafes, bars and producers from across the district covering a huge range of tastes and influences. Visitor information at the back of the guide will also provide ideas and inspiration for anyone visiting the city. We’ve also created some cool features to show off some of Bradford’s food and drink highlights. Venue profiles are divided between the city centre and ‘out of town’, so you can easily navigate the guide depending on where you are looking to visit. We’ve also added locations and a brief description tag to the top of each page so you can quickly scan through and find what you’re

A huge thanks goes out to all our sponsors, particularly this years headline sponsor, the Bradford BID. The sponsorship income allows us to subsidise the cost of profiles for venues and funded this years marketing campaign. Both of which are crucial to the success of Eat Drink Bradford. Did we also mention that Eat Drink Bradford is now online? You can now browse all the venues featured in the Bradford guide, along with all our sister
guides to find new and exciting places to visit. Search by food type, location or budget and access our exclusive series of ‘Meet the Experts’ interview features. The new website, in combination with our social media channels will help the Eat Drink brand reach in excess of 100,000 readers over the next year and will allow us to keep up to date with any new openings and developments! Expect more developments over the next year including the opening of our online shop, the launch of the Eat Drink card and possible an Eat Drink app. In the meantime we hope you enjoy reading the guide and we’d love to hear what you think. Bon Appetit!

Helping to create a better environment for food and drink businesses to thrive The vitality of its food and drink sector is of crucial importance to every major town and city centre. The “high street” needs to be a place where visitors – be they shoppers, workers, residents or tourists – can enjoy spending their leisure time, during both daytime and evening, and the variety and quality of the food and drink available to them can define whether a centre thrives.

The Bradford Business Improvement District (BID) was set up by local businesses to invest in improving the city centre for all who use it, helping to ensure it is clean, safe, full of life and well-promoted locally, regionally and nationally. One of the BID’s key aims, during its five-year term, is to create a better environment for food and drink businesses to succeed in, helping the whole sector to grow and developing and expanding the night-time economy.
SAFE
The BID is pleased to support the Eat: Drink Bradford guide as a way of illustrating to residents and visitors alike just how much the city’s food and drink scene already has to offer. From high-quality coffee shops to excellent independent and chain restaurants, Bradford can provide a huge diversity of delicious fare and a wide choice of pubs and bars affording everything from specialist spirits to the finest locallybrewed craft ales. The city is, of course, famous as the Capital of Curry and the range of styles and tastes, from modern fusion to highly-traditional dishes, is mindblowing. The culinary tour doesn’t stop there, though, with a growing selection of cuisines from across the world, offering a mouth-watering taste of rich and exotic flavours from across the globe.
And look out for the new Bradford BID Food & Drink Festival, staged for the first time in August 2019, which we hope will become an annual event on the city’s culinary calendar. Our aim at the BID is to help Bradford become a major cultural destination, with food and drink at the very heart of the city’s burgeoning future economy. The city’s reputation is already growing and, with the help of guides like this one, we hope to spread the word far and wide that Bradford is the place to be if you want to enjoy a taste of the world!

David Baldwin Helping to kick off a new era of success for Bradford A familiar face to Bradford City fans, David Baldwin will long be remembered for the pivotal role he played in delivering some of the clubs greatest moments in recent memory. During his seven years as Chief Executive the club went from the bottom of League 2 to the brink of the Championship, via a cup final and promotion at Wembley. While he wasn’t scoring the goals or picking the team, his work behind the scenes helped restore a sense of pride and identity, laying the foundations for others to succeed. Now he is striving to do the same for the City of Bradford.
Alongside his role as CEO for Burnley Football Club, David became chair of the Economic Partnership in 2017. The partnership is an umbrella organisation of public sector, private sector and educational institutions, responsible for driving prosperity in the district. His first act was to deliver an ambitious strategy for ecomomic growth, setting out Bradford’s aim to be the UK’s fastest growing economy over the coming decade. It’s a big ask, but who expected to see Bradford City in the League Cup Final? David certainly feels the opportunity is there to make it happen, “With the youngest population of any city in the
“Harnessing this potential will take time, the long term aim is to grow the city’s economy from £10bn to £14bn by 2030, but short term there is a lot we can be doing to build those foundations.” “We have many success stories and achievements that that we maybe haven’t shouted about enough as a city. So you will see an increase in Bradvocacy to drive that feeling of civic pride and get people talking positively about the city.” “We are also working to increase job offerings and continue to increase the average weekly earning year on year. That’s currently up 7% on last year to £488 per week , which is ahead of the national average.” Ultimately the role is about bringing people together and making things happen for the benefit of Bradford. Not dissimilar to that of a football CEO, “I use the mantra of noses pointing in the same direction. So whether it is for the benefit of Burnley Football Club or the City of Bradford it’s the same. It’s about setting targets, monitoring and articulating progress to stakeholders, encouraging teamwork and making sure everyone plays their part.”
“This is where Bradvocates come in, having people in the city willing to shout about it’s successes and potential.” David was recently awarded the Premier League’s ‘CEO of the Year’, following the footsteps of previous winners such as Karen Brady (West Ham) and Daniel Levy (Tottenham). So what was the ambition to return to Bradford and take on such a challenge? “As a father of two boys and a Bradford boy myself who benefited from being educated and given opportunities in the district, I just want to give back to my home city. It’s given a lot to me, it means a lot to me and I’m lucky to be in a position where I feel I can make a difference.” Which leads us to why he has lent his support to this year’s Eat Drink Bradford Guide, “Eat Drink Bradford is a high quality publication with long term ambitions to promote Bradford. Our city’s food and drink industry is something we should be shouting about.”

country, this is a perfect moment in time to shape the wants and needs of the next generation. We have an opportunity to instil a civic pride in that younger generation by creating opportunities that work for them.”

Healthy Living Where to Eat Gone are the days when eating healthy meant settling for a plain salad or ‘having what they’re having but without the cheese...and dressing... and all the other good bits...’ The past few years have seen a number of high quality vegan, vegetarian and healthy eating venues open in Bradford and people can’t get enough! In the city centre Bread + Roses opened in 2018 offering freshly prepared vegan food with an ever changing menu and regular pop-ups. Over in Shipley, Dandelion Cafe found a permanent base alongside Heather Yoga in the impressive Holding Space, while Willow Tree Cafe also opened recently with a 100% plant-based menu. In Thornton Plenty at the Square is a popular cafe committed to using seasonal fruit and veg supplied by local growers.
Healthy Living
Bradford’s curry restaurants are also raising their game when it comes to vegetarian and vegan options. None more so than Prashad, where Head Chef Minal continues to conjures up new and creative twists on the foundational Gujurati recipes. We’re sure there will be plenty more joining the revolution by the time the next guide is out in 2020!

Made in Bradford
Made in Bradford Bradford is a city built on industry...and while wool is its most famous export, its also made a significant contribution in the food and drink industry. Here we take a look some of Bradford’s bestloved food brands, from crinkle cut crisps to elegant cakes.
Denholme Gate Honey
Casa Espresso
This family business, now in its fourth generation, still bake biscuits to the recipes created by Annie Wild over 100 years ago. The bakery was based in Haworth for over 75 years before moving to Steeton in the early 2000s. Today’s business holds true to the traditional family values and commitment of its founder Grandma Annie Wild all those years ago.
Based in the village of Thornton, Denholme Gate Honey harness the spirit of the Brontes, harvesting honey from the heather of the moors that inspired the work of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. They now have hives all around West Yorkshire and also work with other Yorkshire beekeepers to ensure a plentiful supply of quality Yorkshire honey.
Bradford’s first specialty coffee roasters. Casa Espresso hand roast ethical sourced and fully traceable arabica coffee beans and supply them to coffee shops, restaurants and deli’s across the UK. They also sell their coffee online for home users together with brewing equipment, barista training courses and coffee subscriptions.
Just Desserts
Seabrooks Crisps
Mumtaz
Desserts are an awardwinning bakers and patissiers offering a range of high quality, handmade desserts, cakes and quiche for the food service industry. If you’ve got a sweet tooth and you like to eat out, the chances are you’ve enjoyed their handywork!
Seabrook have been making their famous crisps in Bradford since 1945. The company was the first to introduce the crinkle-cut and the first to use sunflower oil to cook their crisps. They are now one of the most popular brands in the UK, some rise for a company that started out in a converted terraced house in Allerton!
The Mumtaz brand is one of Bradford’s most popular exports thanks to their restaurant style ready meals that have reached the shelves in Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Asda and the Coop. But their origins are much more humble, starting out back in 1979 with a simple stall on Great Horton Road. As they approach almost 40 years in the industry, they are still committed to making the finest range of authentic Indian food.
