Your guide to the best food & drink in the Harrogate District We’ve been busy behind the scenes making sure this is the best guide we’ve ever produced, with loads of new features and plenty of new venues for you to try. One year on from our last guide, we are pleased to present Eat Drink Harrogate volume 2. It’s been a long time coming, but its certainly not been time wasted. The reaction to last years guide was incredible and we feel it has huge potential to be more than just a printed directory guide. So we have spent the past year developing the Eat Drink brand and thinking of cool things we can do to make the guides more relevant, interesting and user friendly. We’ve expanded our network, launched the guides online and improved the design and features of the printed guide. We now have a fantastic platform to grow year on year and have a genuine positive impact on Harrogate’s food and drink scene.

Follow us

@EatDrink_Guides

We’re sure the guide will help you and your friends discover new places to eat and drink and that you can take as much pride as we do in Harrogate’s unique food and drink scene. The guide features over 100 of the best restaurants, cafes, bars and producers from across the district covering a huge range of tastes and influences. We’ve also created some cool features to show off some of Harrogate’s food and drink producers. This years guide has been sponsored by the Harrogate BID and we’ve divided our featured venues up into four sections to match the BID’s retail quarters. There’s also an ‘Out of Town’ section to cover the incredible range of venues we have in the surrounding district.

Eat Drink Harrogate Vol 2

9

We’d like to say a huge thankyou to the BID for their support. The sponsorship income allows us to subsidise the cost of profiles for levy-paying venues and helped fund an improved marketing campaign. Their ‘eyes on the ground’ will also help us to ensure venues are topped up with guides throughout the year. Did we also mention that Eat Drink Harrogate is now online? You can now browse all the venues featured in the Harrogate guide, along with all our sister guides to find new and exciting places to visit. Search by food type, location or budget and access our exclusive series of ‘Meet the Experts’ interview features. The new website, in combination with our social media channels will help the Eat Drink brand

reach in excess of 100,000 readers over the next year and will allow us to keep up to date with any new openings and developments! Expect more developments over the next year including the opening of our online shop, the launch of the Eat Drink card and possible an Eat Drink app. In the meantime we hope you enjoy reading the guide and we’d love to hear what you think. Bon Appetit!

Harrogate: Cosmopolitan, Classy and good old Yorkshire Charm “ Harrogate is the queerest place with the strangest people in it, leading the oddest lives of dancing, newspaper reading and dining.” Charles Dickens

Dickens was a regular visitor to Harrogate. Some things have changed since his astute observation, but dining is a tradition still going strong (dancing optional).

When the Sunday Times voted us the best place to live in the North, they cited Harrogate for being ‘cosmopolitan and classy’ while still retaining our ‘old fashioned Yorkshire charm’.

Harrogate has an explosion of bars, restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and cafes.

However, like all destinations, we are faced with the general concern around the decline of Britain’s high streets. Which is why we are not resting on our laurels.

Synonymous with quality, our town is home to Harrogate Spring Water - quenching thirsts all over the world thanks to its association with the famed healing spa water. This spirit features in other award-winning brands such as Slingsby Gin. Visitors snake down Parliament Street for a seat at Bettys (other just as brilliant tearooms are available!)

The Harrogate Business Improvement District (BID) works to support Harrogate’s food and drink sector. The BID was set up by local businesses to invest in improving the town centre for all who use it - to raise Harrogate’s profile and introduce new initiatives in the area to boost footfall.

We are proud then to sponsor the Eat:Drink Harrogate Guide as a way of showcasing our vibrant food and drink scene to residents and visitors alike. Harrogate is perfectly proportioned and positioned. It’s easy to cover on foot, with four distinct quarters just ten minutes apart: Montpellier, Kings, West Park and the Victoria Quarter. What’s more there’s 200 acres of The Stray to walk off that Fat Rascal. You’ll find high end chains that you’d expect in the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’ such as The Ivy, Gino D’Acampo, or Yo Yo Sushi, with a thriving independent scene. Alongside traditional Yorkshire fare, there’s restaurants from each corner of the world, from Turkey to Thailand.

Bars include the oldest in town – Hales Bar - complete with gas lamps, to the cool hipster hang outs with nightly doses of live music, such as Major Tom’s Social or the famed Blues Bar. Indulge in a vast array of culinary treats with delis and food halls, chocolatiers and toffee shops, coffee houses and tearooms, wine bars and gin emporiums, microbreweries and traditional ales. What’s more, you’ll find regular food and drink festivals and general celebrations of Yorkshire produce all year-round. Harrogate is the best place to be if you want to enjoy the best. One thing’s for sure, we have good taste! John Fox (Chairman) Harrogate Business Improvement District (BID)

Made in Harrogate Bettys & Taylors The Taylors story starts back in 1886, when Charles Taylor and his two sons set up a tea and coffee company. C. E. Taylors & Sons became known for quality, and the flagship store at 1 Parliament Street, Harrogate became famous across the region.

They’ve grown a little since then and their flagship Yorkshire Tea brand is one of the most popular in Britain. Their speciality coffee range and the famous Bettys Café Tea Rooms showcase their 130 years of experience.

Spirit of Harrogate Named after William Slingsby, who discovered the unique properties of the natural spring water from Harrogate’s Tewit Well, Slingsby’s Gin was the brainchild of Marcus Black and Mike Carthy. Since launching in 2014 they have developed 18 variations and launched a flagship store and experience in Harrogate.

True Foods As a privately owned business that has grown from strength to strength each year since their beginnings, TRUEfoods make and sell fresh stocks made without compromise. Using traditional culinary principles, 100% British sourced bones, a direct source of filtered spring water, and carefully sourced UK vegetables, they create fresh, natural stocks in exactly the same way any high calibre chef would.

Farrah’s Original Toffee Farrah’s was established in 1840 by John Farrah. The Original Harrogate Toffee was designed to clear the palate of the putrid taste of Harrogate’s sulphur water, famous in the 19th century for it’s healing properties. It is still made in copper pans and packaged in Blue and Silver Embossed Tins as it has been for generations.

Harrogate Spring With a history dating from 1571, Harrogate Spring is Britain’s oldest bottled water and has been revered by Royalty and enjoyed across the world for centuries. First bottled in 1740, it is ‘The Original British Bottled Water’ from ‘The Original British Spa Town’ – authentically Harrogate and quintessentially British.

Brewed in Harrogate By Rachel Auty, Women On Tap

today has Harrogate boasts many superb pubs and bars and several become a well-respected drinking destination. With and some long-standing breweries alive and well in Harrogate ate world-renowned beer brands on the doorstep, Harrog love is an excellent choice for the beer enthusiast. If you tes. seeking out local beers, here are a few of my favouri

Harrogate Brewing Company Plum Porter 4.8%

Watch out for this one! A velvet porter brewed in small batches with Yorkshire plums, it’s a rare find and rarely makes it out of Harrogate. I’ve witnessed it go on and off within an 8-hour shift at one local bar. If you’re super-lucky you may also see the special edition Fudge Porter – made using Farrah’s fudge – or the vanilla porter, both superb examples of tasty dark ale.

Daleside Brewery Monkey Wrench 5.3%

A stronger old English style ale, but incredibly light and easy drinking. This one can be found as cask ale or sometimes in bottles and is a reddish brown beer with a sweet roasted malt flavour that hints at caramel and currants. It’s sharp, malty and delicious – my favourite brew from this Starbeck-based independent brewery.

Eat Drink Harrogate Vol 2

15

Roosters Brewing Co.

Theakston

Baby Faced Assassin 6.1%

Old Peculier 5.6%

This one is a classic chunky IPA brewed with 100% Citra hops to create aromas of mango, apricot, grapefruit and mandarin. For a higher ABV with a tropical fruit zest, this beer is deceptively drinkable and is a bold and impressive core range feature for our biggest local brewery. Better still, you can now visit the Roosters taproom at Hornbeam Park and drink BFA at source.

Did you know that independent world-renowned breweries Theakston and Black Sheep are just up the road from Harrogate in Masham? If you get chance to grab an Old Peculiar, do it. Brewed using a blend of pale, crystal and roasted barley with two bitter hops combined with the majestic Fuggle hop, this is a beer of full-bodied flavour with rich fruit overtones. There’s also a rumour you may find a special ‘from the wood’ edition if you look hard enough.

Roosters Brewing Co.

Harrogate Brewing Company

Yankee 4.3%

Here’s a modern classic pale ale at a great session ABV. This is one of the original new-style pales to be brewed in the UK and now you can drink it at source, here in Harrogate. With floral and citrus fruit aromas delivered by the Cascade hop from the USA, combined with soft Yorkshire water and Golden Promise pale malt, this ale is a quality choice for a classic Yorkshire pint.

Beeching Axe IPA 5.2%

This is a favourite for me. Brewed by a small local family brewery, you’ll be lucky to catch it on the bar and you should try it when you do! Here’s a hoppy IPA style beer and a great ABV point with a citrus flavour, also dry hopped for extra punch. If you get chance to head to a Harrogate Brewery open weekend, you’ll likely find this beer at it’s finest and you might even find special editions such as a delicious unfined version.

Places of Interest Harrogate Theatre Oxford Street, HG1 1QF

Built in 1900 Harrogate Theatre is a typical example of a late Victorian proscenium arch venue built over five floors. An exciting programme of live entertainment runs throughout the year.

Cenotaph Harrogate, HG1 1PE

Harrogate’s war memorial stands proudly in the centre of Harrogate facing the beautiful Parliament Street. It displays the names of 899 people who lost their lives in the First World War and a further 314 names of those who died in the Second World War.

Victoria Shopping Centre Station Parade, HG1 1AE

Remarkably, this shopping centre is less than 30 years old. Architects, Cullearn & Phillips of Manchester were inspired by Palladio’s 16th-century Basilica at Vicenza and is now home to a range of cafes and retailers.
