I feel very honoured to be Guest Editor for June. As someone who is Harrogatebased and incredibly proud of the passion and creativity of local individuals and organisations, I have grown very fond of this monthly events, culture and lifestyle magazine. We are extremely fortunate to have such an outstanding cultural and social scene in Harrogate and the cultural calendar is jam-packed across the area over the coming months! I’ve focused on a number of exceptional community events and I’ve also used this issue to put a spotlight on Knaresborough, which will host not only the 52-year-old Bed Race this month, but also an impressive free local music festival, and Knaresborough’s fantastic family-friendly urban beach this summer.

Women On Tap Festival

A brand new festival with a twist came to Harrogate in May. Women On Tap - or WoTFest - is a celebration of women & beer and the very first event was held at The Little Ale House on the weekend of 19-21 May. The festival featured guest beers brewed by or in some way involving women from the Steam Machine, Mallinsons, Prospect, Baildon, Atom, Half Moon, Wellbeck Abbey, Nomadic, Brown Cow, Woodfordes and Offbeat breweries. Alongside the beer choice there was also an art exhibition by Frances Payne, live music from Cara Hammond & The Paper Waits, and a couple of ticketed beer tasting sessions run by one of the UK’s leading beer experts… who also happens to be a woman – Melissa Cole. Following on from the debut success, it is hoped Women On Tap will become an annual event. For more see www.wotfest.com 10 In the News

Harrogate Pride in Diversity

Harrogate’s first ever Pride event celebrated diversity with a bang last month. Kicking off with a pre-Pride party, a week of activities in arts, literature and faith followed at the Crown Hotel in Harrogate from 14 to 19 May, with the addition of a parade and party in the Valley Gardens on Saturday 20 May. The five-day festival was split into five specific strands, each with thoughtprovoking talks and hosted discussions - Diversity in Art & Literature, Diversity in Action, Diversity in Sport, Diversity in Performing Arts, and Faithful Conversations. Chair of the voluntary group behind the event, Leonora Wassell, said, “We have so many diverse cultures and minorities here in Harrogate and District, so in 2017 we want to celebrate this. Something new for Harrogate!” For more see www.prideindiversityharrogate.com

Stray FM Local Hero Awards

The Local Hero Awards recognise the local people or groups who have done something extraordinary. Members of the public are asked to nominate someone who deserves special recognition for their achievement or someone who has helped make a difference to others. As part of this year’s awards more than 300 guests attended a glittering ceremony at the beautiful Rudding Park on 3 May. Award categories for 2017 included Child of Courage Award (winner: Oliver Myers), Bravery Award (winner: Lauren Doherty), Volunteer of the Year Award (winner: Naomi Dannenberg), Charity Fundraiser of the Year Award (winner: Steve Menzies), and Community Local Hero Award (winner: Open Country - Harrogate and Ripon Tandem Clubs). As always the awards revealed some truly exceptional local stories, including volunteers who work tirelessly, and others, from the very old to the very young, who have faced and overcome adversity with incredible courage.

Let me tell you about Culture HaK… by Rachel Auty

Culture HaK - or Culture Harrogate and Knaresborough - is an independent web-based title founded and run by two local people who are passionate about the arts and social scene on our doorstep. Currently existing as a Facebook page and Twitter profile, Culture HaK is an information feed about local events, arts and culture, music, food, and drink, with an emphasis on creativity. Through Culture HaK the founders aim to vehemently support local indies, passionate individuals, and community initiatives, and to champion anything new and a little bit different.

14 Profile Feature

Posts to date have included the Henshaws urban beach and new crowdfunding initiative, the StrEat Food Festival, Happygate, the Mercer Gallery’s Harrogate Open Day, the Roosters Brewery open day, local tap takeovers, Harrogate Film Festival, beer reviews, gigs, art exhibitions, and cheese. There’s always room for cheese at Culture HaK.

So where did the inspiration come from, and why is Culture HaK different?

I’m lucky enough to work in the arts, but all kinds of creative are my absolute passion. For me it’s what makes the world go round, and I know lots of you will feel the same. What’s really exciting is when someone’s passion fuels something tangible for others to share. When people use creative energy to craft new experiences for others. It’s incredible when people come together over something and there’s shared passion. I also love where we live and I’m always blown away by the social scene we have – incredible bars and restaurants, festivals and special events, art and music, local organisations and people and pockets of the community constantly coming up with new and innovative ways to raise money, support a cause, bring people together, or simply create a wonderful experience for others. Culture HaK is a celebration of all that. It’s about pulling together all those individual strands of creativity and energy within the local social scene. It’s not just another local news source. I guess in summary it’s a massive ‘look at this thing, isn’t it

wonderful?’ and it’s an almighty ‘aren’t we so lucky, where we live? Get out there and feel it for yourself.’

Are there any future plans for Culture HaK?

Well, we’d love to develop it into an online blog-style magazine, and to crowdsource content and contributions from others across the local community. There’s so much wonderful stuff going on locally, it would be incredible to develop Culture HaK into a vibrant source of diverse and organic experiences, perspectives, styles and opinions. There are no plans to ever monetise it or to turn it into anything other than an organic marketing tool – independence and authenticity sit at the core of Culture HaK, and its evolution will be firmly built upon those foundations. Summer Highlights - Harrogate International Festivals

by Ann Chadwick and the festival team

This month’s front cover for the Harrogate Review was designed by Glenn Hustler in celebration of Harrogate International Festivals’ flagship Harrogate Music Festival, which begins on 30 June and runs throughout the month of July in venues across the town. Glenn was inspired by 2017’s Festival theme ‘Generations’. He’s captured the Festival spirit through the ages, spanning its 50 year history from the baby boomers to Gen X and the present day. The theme celebrates the Festival’s legacy and ambitious future – as the arts are passed, sung, danced and celebrated from generation to generation. There’s something for all ages to enjoy at the life affirming experience of a live performance this summer. Below, the Festival team have hand-picked the upcoming acts they’re most excited about.

Top pick for crime fiction fans

Top picks for music lovers

Celebrating its 15th year in 2017, the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is my Summer Festival top pick! The atmosphere is summed up perfectly in this quote from The Telegraph -“The biggest event devoted to crime fiction in Europe… Harrogate fosters a special intimacy between writers and readers; you see a different, more personal side to the authors… In short, a weekend that combines first-class entertainment with stimulation of the little grey cells. What better tribute could Dame Agatha’s many literary descendants pay to her shade?”

One of the biggest highlights of the Festival for me will certainly be Sir Bryn Terfel’s recital at the Royal Hall on 29 July. He has appeared in all of the world’s biggest opera houses and concert halls and it’s a real honour to have such an internationally renowned singer at the Harrogate Music Festival.

Gemma Rowland, Operations Manager

Dubbed the ‘Glastonbury of crime’, come along and be entertained by over 90 world class authors or simply soak up the atmosphere; visit the pop-up WHSmith bookshop and then enjoy a drink in the tents on the lawn of the Old Swan Hotel whilst rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in crime fiction.

Brian O’ Regan, Music Festivals Manager

I’m a great lover of chamber music and of contemporary classical music, so I’m very much looking forward to the concerts by The Gould Piano Trio and the Finnish ensemble, the Kamus Quartet. Growing up, I listened to a lot of jazz, and so I really can’t wait for the slick and energetic Alex Mendham & His Orchestra to bring the Royal Hall to life with a swingin’ set from the golden era of big band music. Tim Garland is a living jazz legend, and from the very first time I heard his music I was immediately drawn in by the complex, earthy beats, and soaring melodies which reveal subtle influences from all over the world. Insider tip - don’t miss this one.

Children and family events

Charlotte Woods, Music and Education Coordinator

We’ve got so much to offer for families this year. I’m so excited to see the fairytale story of The King, The Cat and The Fiddle brought to life with live music. This is definitely an event for the whole family - I’m not sure who will love it more, the children or the parents. Songs and Scones is also a festival pick for me - music and scones in the same morning, what’s not to love? Our Family Concert with HSO is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon and gives the whole family a chance to learn about instruments and interact with a real-life orchestra. Preview Feature 19

Ian Rankin on TV, Rebus and Bradford

Ian Rankin celebrates a 30 year reign with Detective Inspector John Rebus. He headlines the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival this July, and is the focus of its annual Big Read in June‌.Ann Chadwick speaks to him. by Ann Chadwick 20 Interview Feature

Rankin has sold more than 30 million books. His first novel had an advance of £200, but he’s been ranked as one of the most successful authors of all time. News has just been announced that Eleventh Hour Films will be adapting his Rebus books for a new contemporary TV drama adaptation. Not that he’ll be watching it. “I don’t watch TV,” Ian said. “I’ve not got Netflix or Amazon Prime, I’ve not got anything. I keep buying boxsets on DVD and thinking next time I get ill if I get the flu, I can just gorge on box sets but it doesn’t happen, I’m too busy travelling around. And I consciously didn’t watch the Rebus series when it was on TV because I didn’t want that influence to get in the way of the images in my head.” He is keen however to re-visit the series for the small screen. “When Rebus was originally put on TV, ITV did it and it was one hour per book, and that translated into 45 minutes plus ad breaks, so it’s basically a 45 page script for a 400 page novel, and I didn’t think that was doing the character or the setting or the themes of the books justice. So I got the rights back and was just waiting for the TV production company to come along and say we will give it that kind of length that series really needs – 8 hours, 10 hours, to tell the story properly and give the chance for the characters to develop.” The Rebus books centre on Inspector John Rebus, a hardboiled Edinburgh cop with

a tendency to bend rules. The first book, Knots And Crosses, was published in 1987, Rankin’s latest, Rather Be the Devil, sees Rebus in his late sixties, not at best physical peak. Would he ever kill him off? “I’ve got no plans to kill him off anytime soon, I never know when I start writing a new book what the ending is going to be, so I never know if he’s going to be alive or dead at the end of the next book. The series was never intended to be a series, and I certainly never intended it to last 30 years. So as long as there’s one story left in me and one story left in Rebus then I’ll keep writing about him. But the thing is with fictional characters, especially with detectives these days they can live after death, so even once I’m gone there’s the potential for other writers to come along and write Rebus stories.” Ian is a regular at Harrogate’s Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, hosted at the Old Swan Hotel. He sees it as a chance to catch up with fellow authors and fans, as well as not so distant family. “I’ve not seen Dennis Lehane for probably a decade,” he said about the Boston-based Shutter Island author, “so it would be lovely to catch up with him I’m a big fan of his work. It’s always fun to meet up with Lee Child. It’s as much as meeting the fans as meeting the authors. The nice thing about Harrogate is everyone is focussed on one setting, that one hotel, it’s not a big city, so when you walk around the streets you do bump into fans and see them in bars and restaurants and get the chance to chat. Also I’ve got family round that way so I’m going to try and catch up with them. Whenever I’m in

Yorkshire, I try catch up with family because my mum was born and brought up in Bradford, so I’ve got cousins and aunts and uncles in the neighbourhood.” He laughs, “I’m half Yorkshire!” It would be great to set a crime book in Bradford? “Wouldn’t it, wouldn’t it yeah? We’ve got a lack of Bradford crime writers at the moment, and the nice thing about crime fiction is it does tell you about the place, anywhere I get interested in around the world, I find crime fiction set there because it tells you about the culture, the history, the social issues, good places to go, places to avoid – you get all of that from crime fiction. Bradford needs more of it. And indeed Harrogate as well.”

22 Interview Feature

Isn’t Harrogate too twee? “I don’t know, what problems lurk below the surface?” “I’m looking forward to coming back, I’m looking forward to seeing some family members hopefully, and catching up with fans and catching up with other writers, that’s what it’s all about.” Ian Rankin is a Special Guest at The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, 20-23 July at The Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate, alongside Lee Child, Robson Green, James Runcie, Arne Dahl, Kathy Reichs, Dennis Lehane, Stuart MacBride and Peter May. harrogateinternationalfestivals.com Box Office: 01423 562 303.

A summer of sand by Rachel Auty

Picture this - the warm summer sunshine on your skin, children playing, a cold drink in your hand, the sand between your toes… Where are you? Whitby? Cornwall? Overseas? Or Knaresborough? For the fourth consecutive year, this August Henshaws will be bringing the beach to their arts & crafts centre in Knaresborough – 70 miles from the nearest coast! The Henshaws urban beach was first brought to the town in 2014 thanks to a collaboration between Henshaws and Feva, an arts festival held in Knaresborough every August. Initially delivered as a bit of an experiment without anyone really knowing what to expect, the first year was so busy and successful that it’s been repeated annually since. Three years on and it has become a summer highlight for the local community as well as a tourism asset for the town.

26 Preview Feature

In terms of the construction, the sand is installed in the central courtyard area at Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre, creating a circular ‘beach’ surrounded by hay bales with a neighbouring stage, picnic benches, and undercover areas for craft and food stalls, plus sheltered seating should the weather be unkind. It’s a wonderfully welcoming and practical space and Henshaws is the perfect host for such an impressive summer spectacle. This year the beach will offer three weeks full of family fun with a programme of daytime events and activities including live music, face painting, craft workshops, a beach party, theatre shows, wood-fired pizzas, and an ice cream parlour. There are also evening

events running throughout - some ticketed, some completely free.

The full programme of events will be available online from mid-June at www.henshaws.org.uk

It’s free entry to the centre and the beach and an absolute dream for parents on a budget at summer holiday time – the perfect space in which to spend the day and if the weather is kind it’s really quite a magical place to be. In fact I’ve witnessed the most horrendous downpours whilst visiting the urban beach at Henshaws in previous years.. and seen carefree kids splashing in puddles, grown-ups dancing in the rain, and the live acts carrying on regardless. There’s something very special about this space, and it’s wonderful to see and be part of the way the urban beach brings people together every summer.

Arts & Crafts Centre manager Maria Dawbarn is looking forward to the urban beach arriving again this year, “We’re very excited - the beach is a great chance to welcome visitors in and to showcase the wonderful work we do here at the Arts & Crafts Centre. We really want people to see this as a place for the local community, somewhere you can come to relax and enjoy the activities whenever you want.”

Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre’s senior workshop leader Rufus Beckett agrees, “The urban beach has become a fantastic part of the summer alongside the Feva festival. When the sun is shining it plays host to hundreds of children and parents every day. It’s got a magical atmosphere.”

If you haven’t been to Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre before, you’re in for a big surprise. It’s a creative facility that’s about so much more than making art. It’s a place that is about making friendships, making memories, making a difference, and ultimately bringing people together – which is exactly why the urban beach works so well here. The centre offers accessible facilities open to all, including a licensed café, pirate ship play area, open studios, woodland walks and gardens, a plant centre, and a shop selling original artwork. Preview Feature 27

Other Highlights The Henshaws urban beach has become an important part of summer for me and my family, and I’m delighted it’s returning. The fact that social groups and families can spend time together in such a safe, exciting and welcoming space without spending a fortune is fantastic. I also love the support given to local talent through opportunities to perform. I love the breadth of creativity that surrounds the urban beach project. And - in this modern world of digital conversations and online friendships - across those three weeks this summer our local community will be physically and socially drawn together by this wonderful temporary circle of sand. Now isn’t that just brilliant? For me, it’s things like this that make this an outstanding place to live. Henshaws urban beach is at Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre, Bond End, Knaresborough, from Sunday 6 to Sunday 27 August 2017. Open 10am – 4pm every day. Free entry. Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre is part of Henshaws, a charity supporting people living with sight loss and other disabilities to go beyond expectations. Headliners revealed for Literature Festival

From Game of Thrones to cricket, via William Blake, Bradford Literature Festival returns with a programme of events like no other. by Georgina Lennon

Bradford Literature Festival, in association with Provident Financial Group, has announced 2017’s new, exciting events and literary greats. The now iconic festival, held for ten days from 30 June to 9 July, has always considered literature in its broadest possible sense, celebrating the wonderful world of words that connects everything from poetry to music, fiction to science, theatre to sport. This year’s guests include literary greats Jeanette Winterson and Ben Okri, worldrenowned poets Jackie Kay and Linton Kwesi-Johnson, feminist Germaine Greer and historian and politician Shashi Tharoor. There’ll also be a trio of events on Yorkshire cricket, held in association with The Cricketer Magazine, Tiff Needell, host of Top Gear and Fifth Gear, joins the festival for a look into the world of Formula One, and there’ll be a fittingly adult celebration of Harry Potter’s 20th birthday - Potter’s Potions, a bespoke cocktail-making class in the dungeonesque setting of Bradford’s stunning Sunbridge Wells. At the Bradford

Literature Festival there’s something for everyone. Fans of film and theatre will be thrilled by this year’s programme. With films as diverse and wide ranging as Holy Terrors, which brings to life the macabre tales of Welsh writer Arthur Machen, and the highly controversial Lipstick Under My Burka, banned in India for being ‘too lady orientated’, with its scenes of feminist rebellion, there’s plenty to keep cinema lovers entertained. There’ll also be a series of exceptional theatre productions - Bradford-born Asif Khan brings his debut play Combustion, a fabulously comic take

Clockwise: Shashi Tharoor, Joanna Trollope, Gemma Cairney, Tiff Needell, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Germaine Greer

on young British Muslim lives in the north of England, and celebrated poet Lemn Sissay will perform his internationally acclaimed Something Dark, recently added to the national syllabus. This year’s dates have moved the festival further into the summer months, and, with a spectacular line-up of free family fun days held in Bradford’s own City Park sun trap, families will be spoiled for choice this July. The first weekend - Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 July - will see superheroes descend upon the city, followed by a fairytale wonderland of mythical characters, whilst the second weekend - Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July will see Bradford’s first Teddy Bear’s Picnic, and the finale, a Harry Potter extravaganza, promises a magical end to what is sure to be an incredible ten days. For parents of teenagers, the festival’s Young Adult strand will come as a welcome

relief. Radio 1 DJ and fashion stylist Gemma Cairney joins this year’s A-list line-up for a frank discussion on the highs and lows of growing up, king of controversy and YA author Melvyn Burgess, whose novel Junk defined a decade, will join Glamour columnist and LGBT activist Juno Dawson to discuss The Books They Don’t Want You To Read, and there’ll be interactive workshops on everything from Manga drawing to opinion writing to performance poetry. The full programme of events is now available via the festival website, including a digital version of the festival brochure, and with events already selling out, literature lovers are encouraged to buy tickets now to avoid disappointment! Taking a paws by Andrew at CultureHaK

Residents of Harrogate have long been considered among the most fortunate in the UK for their quality of life, due in part to our many green and leafy spaces. These leafy spaces allow us to enjoy the company of our furry canine friends, and increasingly so do our social spaces and drinking establishments. It’s fair to say that Harrogate has experienced a surge of new craft ale pubs, and more often than not they’re dog friendly. Never again do leisurely pooch walks need to be separate from a quality pint. As keen dog owners ourselves at CultureHaK - Culture Harrogate and Knaresborough we thought we’d highlight a few of the local places where we like to take a pause with our favourite paws. We’ve also included a longer list to the right of the opposite page.

10 Devonshire Place, Harrogate The choice of beers at 10 Devonshire Place (TDP) seems to be matched only by the range of its regular doggy guests. With a homely old-world-meets-new-world feel, the TDP bar staff show such love for animals that sometimes our dogs get served their water bowls before we get our pints. Dog beers are also on offer, and if you’re lucky you might just catch dog-friendly burgers from local pop-up Hades Kitchen. There’s even a Dogs of the Dev group on Facebook to add to the community feel.

CAMRA Harrogate and Ripon’s Pub of the Year 2017 has not exactly gone unreported in the local press, but what isn’t covered is owners Richard and Danni’s love for hairy quadrupedal visitors. A plate of doggy biscuits on the bar and communal water bowls throughout the pub shows their enthusiasm, and it’s rare for one of them to walk past a table without stopping for an ear scratch. (For legal reasons, we must qualify that ear-scratching is for the dogs only). Keep your eyes peeled for Holly, a beautiful Cocker Spaniel and part-time pub dog who does a great job of greeting customers and generally being very sweet.

The Knaresborough Bed Race

1940s Open Day @ Valley Gardens

Part fancy dress pageant and part timed running challenge, first off all the teams parade in all their finery through the medieval streets of Knaresborough to Conyngham Hall. Each year has a theme and this year is Heroes And Villains. Making up the parade are marching bands, troubadours, dance groups and more.

Presented at Valley Gardens throughout the day will be live 1940s big band music, vintage and military vehicles, displays of 1940s memorabilia, various stalls inside the Sun Pavilion, children’s activities, a beer and Pimms tent, a hot food catering area, plus tea, cakes and tombola!

On Saturday 10 June the 52nd Great Knaresborough Bed Race will take place. Each year the Bed Race features 90 teams of six runners and a passenger.

At Conyngham Hall Field the decorations are stripped and the teams prepare for the race itself - a gruelling time trial over a 2.4 mile course, ending with a swim through the icy waters of the River Nidd. For more see www.bedrace.co.uk

The seventh annual 1940s Open Day in Valley Gardens will be held on 18 June – also Father’s Day. Organised by the Friends of Valley Gardens (FOVG) as a fundraiser, last year the event attracted approximately 30,000 visitors.

It’s free entry into Valley Gardens and visitors are welcome to dress in 1940s attire if they wish – many do! All funds raised by FOVG go towards the restoration and development of the park facilities. Currently they are over halfway to meeting their £60k target for the restoration of the Green Park Entrance. For more see www.friendsofvalleygardens.co.uk

A Quick Chat with...

Lucy Playford

Lucy Playford runs popular blog www.HarrogateMama.com, which shares what’s great about Harrogate for families. Favourite place to hang out in and around Harrogate? I always love to take the kids to RHS Harlow Carr. It’s been our haven since my twins were born ten years ago and I now spend time chasing around after my little boy up there too!

Local event you couldn’t live without? I’m excited to see the StrEat Food Festival coming back this August. We had a brilliant time there last year, it was great to get that family festival feel in our own home town.

Local business you admire? Sara Shaw, who has opened her own preloved designer wear store Violet, is doing great things and supports local Harrogate charities in the process too!

Local person you admire (past or present)? I think when Gary Verity brought the Tour de France to Yorkshire he moved up my admiration list. I have never seen Harrogate like that before and all credit to him and the team who achieved that.
