What happens when European theatre meets Yorkshire fish and chips? by Rachel Auty
This month Harrogate Theatre is bringing the fabulous Best Of BE Festival back to the town, and it’s an absolute must for theatre-going food-lovers. Here’s an evening of boundarysmashing European performance and fine Yorkshire fodder in the shape of three short shows punctuated by a fish and chip supper and a glass of wine - all included in the ticket price and all under one roof. Each year Birmingham’s genre-bending European arts festival – BE FESTIVAL - takes to the road and shines a light on the continent’s diverse and emerging talent in theatre, dance and performance art.
BE FESTIVAL shakes up the idea of conventional theatre by crossing borders and disciplines and blurring traditional boundaries between audience and artist. The annual summer festival invites European performers to perform at Birmingham Repertory Theatre and celebrates European culture and community. Here’s Harrogate’s chance to experience the highlights of the 2016 festival with three exceptional shows from Italy, Germany and Switzerland, each lasting 30 minutes.
Vacuum (Switzerland)
Overload (Italy)
A transcendental performance created by Philippe Saire, one of Europe’s leading exponents of experimental choreography, where movement and visual arts converge and bodies weave through black holes and shards of dazzling light. The slo-mo optical canvas mesmerises as two male forms float through a vacuum created in space.
Overload is a fast-paced and explosive physical theatre performance by four Italians intent on dissecting the noisy interruptions that bombard our day to day lives. Through a witty narrative the show jumps from one distraction to another, analysing the feelings triggered by something ending prematurely and our perpetual sense of confusion. Sotterraneo are a multi-award winning theatre collective.
Company Philippe Saire
Situation with Outstretched Arm (Germany) Oliver Zahn
The saluto Romano, the Olympic salute, the Bellamy salute or, in its most common form, the Nazi salute. One of the most powerful and violent symbols of the twentieth century is re-contextualised on stage through physical performance and essay. The German production takes a unique cross-disciplined approach to a controversial subject, one that has re-emerged across Europe in extremist organisations.
Sotteraneo
All three shows will take place in Harrogate Theatre’s intimate Studio space, and during an extended interval the audience will be served some of the finest fish and chips in Yorkshire.

Gilbert and Sullivan with a 20th century twist by John Carter
14 Preview Feature
When Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic comic opera Ruddigore takes to the stage at Harrogate Theatre on 17-20 May, gone will be the traditional period costumes and Victorian scenery. In their place expect teddy boys, petticoats, hand jives and a Hammer Horror twist to the The Witch’s Curse, the less well-known title for Ruddigore. Directing Harrogate Gilbert and Sullivan Society in this modern reworking of the G&S comic opera is award-winning actor and director Alistair Donkin. A former principal of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, Alistair knows more than most the risks of updating time-honoured favourites. According to Alistair, Ruddigore is the ideal musical to revamp, “I came up with this idea many years ago but have never found a G&S society willing to do it. In the United States they told me ‘We don’t think our audience is ready for that yet!’” Although he has been feted for his traditional productions of G&S, Alistair is no stranger to more modern takes on the classic operettas. “I was lucky enough to understudy Ko Ko in The Mikado directed by Jonathan Miller and nothing could have been further from tradition than that. In Houston in 2014 I updated The Sorcerer to 1914 in homage to the outbreak of WW1.” The Witch’s Curse, aka Ruddigore, is set at the seaside and in the haunted Ruddigore Castle and tells the story of gothic villain Sir Despard Murgatroyd, who has inherited a witch’s curse, forcing him to commit a crime a day or die in agony. Meanwhile shy Robin Oakapple, who is hiding a dark secret, is in love with beautiful Rose Maybud down at the local coffee bar. Into the mix come a bevy of bridesmaids and a group of teddy boys down from London, looking for fun and sun. In the topsy-turvy world of G&S expect haunted castles, teenage romance, villainy and ancient ghosts.
Taking the lead roles are experienced G&S actors from across Yorkshire, including acclaimed actor/director Graham Weston playing Robin Oakapple, and soprano Valerie Green playing Dame Hannah Trusty. Alistair says the cast will be up to the challenge of bringing the opera into the 1950s. “Knowing this cast as I have done for many years, both in Harrogate and elsewhere, I know they’re enjoying the departure from tradition which is making them reassess the characters they’re playing - they are drawing out facets of their characters which they haven’t done before.” Last year Alistair spent time in local schools ahead of the production and he says children will love this new version of a classic opera with its ghosts and ghouls. But for traditional fans of G&S, Alistair says not to worry. “Unlike other G&S operas Ruddigore is a timeless horror story of ghosts and curses so doesn’t have to be in a particular time period. But Gilbert’s wonderful dialogue and Sullivan’s exquisite score will remain intact.” The show is at Harrogate Theatre from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 May at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee performance at 2.30pm. Tickets for The Witch’s Curse / Ruddigore are £17 with concessions for over 60s, groups and students. There are free tickets for all accompanied children aged 16 and under. Buy online at www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk or contact the box office on 01423 502116.

Girl On The Train author launches new book in Harrogate by Ann Chadwick
30 Review Feature
Paula Hawkins, author of one of the biggest debuts in crime fiction, The Girl On The Train, launches her follow-up book Into The Water exclusively in Harrogate on 4 May. Girl On The Train was the psychological thriller debut that nobody escaped. It debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, was a USA Today Book Of The Year, and a major motion picture starring Emily Blunt. It occupied the number one spot of the UK hardback chart for 20 weeks, the longest any book has ever held the top spot, selling a staggering 15 million copies worldwide in the first year of its release. Now Paula Hawkins will launch her next novel Into The Water - one of the most anticipated releases of 2017 - at an exclusive one-off evening with Harrogate International Festivals at Harrogate’s Crown Hotel, in partnership with WH Smith and Psychologies magazine. The author of one of the most successful psychological debuts in publishing history will be interviewed on stage by the editor of Psychologies magazine, Suzy Greaves. Paula Hawkins said, “For me there’s something irresistible about the stories we tell ourselves, the way voices and truths can be hidden consciously or unconsciously. Into The Water is a book of many mysteries. It’s about searching for answers, for meaning. I’m looking forward to talking about it in May.” Into The Water is an addictive novel of psychological suspense about the slipperiness of the truth, and a family drowning in secrets. With the same propulsion that captivated millions of readers worldwide in her debut, Paula unfurls a gripping, twisting, layered story set in a small riverside town. Gemma Rowland of Harrogate International Festivals says, “Audiences will have their chance to be the first to get hold of a copy of Into The Water, and Paula will be signing copies on the night. We’ve built a reputation for
hosting one-off special book launches for the biggest names in the genre, from Jo Nesbo to JK Rowling, writing as Robert Galbraith. An Evening With Paula Hawkins promises to be one of the hottest tickets in town.” Audiences will be able to redeem the £10 ticket against a copy of Into The Water at the on-site bookshop provided by WH Smith at the Crown Hotel on the night. Ticket bookers also receive a free copy of Tess Gerritsen’s Die Again to collect at the event. Gemma added, “We’re delighted to announce there’ll be 150 goodie bags to collect on the night, with a free copy of Psychologies magazine and an advance copy of Transworld’s lead debut thriller for summer – Fierce Kingdom by Gin Phillips, which is tipped as a truly special book that promises to leave readers breathless.” Alison Barrow of Transworld said, “Harrogate Festival has become a really effective early platform for publishers to offer goodie bags featuring advance copies of books. It’s been the perfect launch spot for many of Transworld’s debut thrillers, including The Girl On The Train. There’s nowhere better to unleash a debut for those readers looking for the next big thing.” Thursday 4 May at 7.30pm, The Crown Hotel, Harrogate. Tickets £10 redeemable against the price of Into The Water. Includes a free copy of Tess Gerritsen’s Die Again with the first 150 bookers receiving a complimentary goodie bag to collect on the night.

The Cheeseboard
Roosters
Behind a black glossy frontage at the top of Commercial Street is a hidden gem, an Aladdin’s cave of cheese lovers’ delights stocking over 200 types of cheese from around the world, with an emphasis on British and local cheese.
Hatched in 1993, at a time when most ales were brown, Knaresborough’s Roosters Brewing Co. quickly developed a reputation for brewing ground-breaking, hop-forward pale ales that showcased exciting new hops from the USA.
There’s something for everyone, and don’t be daunted by all that cheese - knowledgeable staff will offer you tasters before you buy and advise you on your selection. Whether you’re wanting a simple cheese board to take home or catering for a party of 200, help and advice is on hand.
Beers such as Yankee soon started to attract the attention of judges at beer festivals across the UK, racking up countless awards along the way. One of the original, new-style pale ales to be brewed in the UK, Yankee is now a modern classic.
Also available are delicious, unusual accompaniments to eat with your cheese, such as Baked Fig Balls, Acacia Truffle Honey or Fruit and Nut Torta. 40 The Best of Harrogate
