Gaming convention comes to Harrogate
The Henshaw’s Urban Beach in Knaresborough has been saved following a successful crowdfunding campaign. The family-friendly venue - a key part of the town’s annual Feva Arts Festival - received donations from over 50 residents and businesses.
Thousands of pop culture and gaming fans are expected in Harrogate this autumn as a major new event comes to the Convention Centre. Organisers of Fanatic 2017 promise to transform Harrogate into ‘a galaxy far far away’ in a weekend featuring personal appearances from famous actors, including stars of Game of Thrones, Lord of The Rings and James Bond. The event comes to Harrogate following the success of a similar fan convention in Wales. Now the man behind the Welsh show, Jaime Milner, says it’s time to bring a similar experience to the north of England, “Harrogate is a super venue and a super town. It’s time the North had its own event. We want this to grow and become a flagship event. There’ll be lots of weird and wonderful things and costumes galore. Fanatic 2017 takes place on the weekend of 2 and 3 September. Tickets are on sale now. For more details go to www.harrogateconventioncentre. co.uk/whats-on/fanatic-expo

12 Preview Feature
Welcome to the Greatest Gilbert and Sullivan Show on Earth! From 4 to 20 August, Harrogate will be alive to the sounds of The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, The Mikado and the other jewels from this quintessentially English partnership which laid the foundation for today’s musical theatre. The 24th International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival is one of the UK’s leading arts events and features forty full-scale productions staged in the magnificent Royal Hall and its adjoining facility, a specially-built Harrogate Savoy Theatre for youth, university and other special interest performances. Gilbert & Sullivan wrote fourteen comic operas and these delightful, topsy turvy stories are firmly back in fashion in 2017 as an ever-increasing number of professional opera companies from around the UK realise that audiences love these magical gems. And if you’ve never been to see G&S before, do come along and take in a show - you’ll be hooked! The Festival is all about fantastic entertainment and you’re sure to leave the theatre with a smile on your face and a skip in your step. The glorious music and Sullivan and Gilbert’s wonderful, witty dialogue and outstanding political satire are as topical as ever. Just imagine what Gilbert would have made of today’s political shenanigans - they’re certainly worthy of a full-length comic opera in their own right. The must-see shows in 2017 are four brand new productions by the Festival’s own professional National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company. They will perform well-known favourites, The Mikado, HMS Pinafore and The Pirates Of Penzance, along with the lesser known gem Princess Ida. A fantastic cast has been assembled and you can be sure of lots and lots of laughter. The festival brings together a wonderful mix of

The Great Yorkshire Show The very best of agriculture and farming will meet fashion and celebrity at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. by Haigh Simpson
Agriculture remains firmly at the heart of the show, and this year, as well as the thousands of cattle, sheep, pigs, pigeons and ponies, the Charolais Cattle Society is holding its Summer National Show with around 75 cattle expected.
They will be among the first users of the newly revamped Collecting Ring, which has seen the Yorkshire Agricultural Society invest £70,000 to improve conditions under the direction of Olympic show jumping legend Graham Fletcher.
The Ford and Fordson Association is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of tractor production with a display of tractors and machinery on the President’s Lawn. This includes early Ford and Fordson tractors spanning through to the current New Holland range supplied by Russells.
Also in the main ring, military parachute display team RAF Falcons, based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, will jump from the skies in their Great Yorkshire Show debut on Tuesday at 12.35.
Atkinson Action Horses from East Yorkshire whose TV stunt horses have appeared in Poldark, Victoria and Peaky Blinders, will make their debut and perform stunts and tricks in the Main Ring every afternoon. 16 Preview Feature

Alex Mendham: bringing vintage back by Ann Chadwick
Harrogate is invited to go retro, to put on your dancing shoes for an exhilarating evening with the resident orchestra at the legendary Savoy Hotel. Alex Mendham and His Orchestra are stylish, young, slick and energetic, and the 20-piece jazz orchestra will get your toes tapping on the sprung dance floor of the Royal Hall on Friday 28 July. Alex spoke to Harrogate Review to explain why vintage Hollywood rocks. For those who are unacquainted, can you describe your style of music? We play a very special kind of music from a golden era of songwriting. Much of what we perform comes from the lavish scores written for the musicals for the silver screen and stage from the 1920s and 30s. Aside from the scores there’s also a very upbeat element to the music and I think our shows really challenge preconceived ideas of the music of that era. Being the Savoy’s resident orchestra has such a sense of romance, as does the whole vintage Hollywood style – are you a romantic at heart? I’m very much tuned in to the romantic element of the music and I love the passionate ballads and rich scores written in the 1930s. They offered escapism and uplift - people wanted to see opulence and things on a grand scale and the musicals and radio gave it to them.
As a young man, what made you turn to the nostalgic era of the 1920s and 30s and why do you think the music endures today? For me, there is no nostalgic element as I wasn’t around to experience this wonderful music at its inception. What keeps me and my musicians really interested is the extremely high quality of the compositions, arrangements and musicians of the era. They were doing such exciting things and really paving the way for later generations. I know at our shows sometimes people dress up and want to live another era and have tapped into that rich vein of music heritage. Others just want to hear music that is new to them and it has something timeless about its appeal. If there were any musician dead or alive you could perform with in your dream concert, who would it be and why? Without a doubt I would love the cornetist Bix Beiderbecke to perform with the orchestra. Bix was a phenomenal improviser with a tone that musicians talk about even today. As a musician, what are the five things you can’t live without? iPod, coffee, enthusiastic team, practice, exceptional manager. Outside the music, do you immerse yourself in the Gatsby era – do you dress in that style/ read books from the era? I spent a lot of my younger years reading books from that period and equipping

myself with a sense of the era. Now I just use that sense to approach performances but with both feet firmly in the world of today. All the orchestra and singers dress in period attire - I think that’s essential. I also have some very well cut suits of the time, but while I love the 1920s/30s I am still present in the here and now. How would you persuade younger audiences to come along and give your music a go? Come and enter another world and hear new things, this is the closest live experience to being in a silver screen film. You won’t need any persuasion to come again after seeing and hearing the orchestra. Many of the players in the orchestra are in their 20s and 30s and began to love the music once they heard it. If you want to dress up, go for it, but if you just want to see an exciting evening of music, come along and I know we’ll see you

again. What feeling do you hope audiences in Harrogate will take away after experiencing your performance? A new appreciation for this amazing music from the 1920s and 30s, and that they will feel uplifted and eager to hear more. This isn’t simply a polite evening of ‘classics’, this is an exciting stage show of some of the hottest tunes, lavish romantic numbers and presented as it would have been almost 90 years ago. I hope they will leave feeling how relevant this music is and can see its deserved place in our time. Alex Mendham & His Orchestra, Friday 28 July, Royal Hall, 8pm. Sir Bryn Terfel Sir Bryn Terfel – the Welsh sensation wowed at Cheltenham Festival – now he’s headlining Harrogate Music Festival this July with a rare and intimate recital in Harrogate’s glittering Royal Hall. by Ann Chadwick
24 Preview Feature
Trying to pin down Sir Bryn Terfel for a chat isn’t easy. When he gets back he’s in Dresden before flying off to Salzburg. With a career that has seen him perform at all of the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls, Sir Bryn’s is one of the most in-demand voices. Thankfully you don’t have to globetrot to see the global sensation, as the world-renowned bass-baritone promises a very special performance in Harrogate. A Grammy, Classical Brit and Gramophone awardwinning artist - what’s it like being the global superstar of opera? “I do disagree with the global opera star,” Bryn said. “A tad too much I’d say. I would much rather have the farmer’s son from North Wales any day!” Despite his humbleness there are few opera stars who hit the headlines and get on the Queen’s honours list for services to music. His partner Hannah Stone is the former official harpist to the Prince of Wales. She gave birth to their fourth child in December last year, no doubt destined to be a musical prodigy with such lineage. Congratulations! “Why thank you. Certainly Lili Alaw (alaw meaning melody in Welsh) is already sleeping with Wagner warbling and harp playing in the background to her heart’s content. Music should be in every child’s life from birth in every shape and form. My children have always loved all styles of music and I’m sure little Lili will be no different,” he says. From Sir Tom Jones to Dylan Thomas, there is something about the lyrical Welsh voice, something that is imbued with romance, drama, and power. “From a personal perspective I think also the Welsh language has an immense bearing on the development of a voice before its training comes to the foreground,” Bryn said, “I have always felt comfortable in many languages due to my strong beginnings in the folk song tradition and the eventual crossing into the old Victorian repertoire that our grandparents adored. A circle of training had already been completed before I even took
the guiding hand of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.” As to Harrogate, audiences can expect a uniquely personal and insightful programme, “My programme is a trip down memory lane. Some songs are the first I ever learnt as a classical singer. One my grandmother chose, some from my first singing teacher, some from my second singing teacher. Some are the first cycle of songs I ever learnt. This gives a palate of colours and repertoire that is indeed endless. From Welsh to French to English to Italian. The scope of one’s repertoire is sometimes truly life changing. Always hard work and dedication. Some are tunes that I adore, some are poems that strike a chord. Some are there because I adore singing them.” Bryn insists that singing in front of his school in North Wales was the most daunting time of his career, although his debut at La Scala in Milan in the Marriage Of Figaro was a moment that stands out in his long career. “Although I knew I was pretty good at singing I did in fact detest singing in front of the school. But it stood me in good stead to be there in Milan facing the most knowledgeable audience that I had ever encountered in their iconic opera house in their famous production with their incredible maestro. I have never ever felt such nerves in my entire life. Shaking like a leaf, dry mouthed and humbled beyond belief. But, I got through it and ended up doing all the performances…A truly memorable experience, shared by my parents.” At heart, music is an expression of deep emotion. If he had to pick one inheritance track, he said it would easily be a song he recorded for the Air Ambulance charity in Wales – I’ll Send an Angel. “I adore that song. The melody, the words, the message. It can be played at weddings and funerals, sung in concerts and competitions. Be kind - when in need help others, protect and guide them. Not a bad message to connect and share with your children.” Sir Bryn Terfel, Royal Hall, Harrogate, Saturday 29 July, 7.30pm. B ox Office 01423 562 303. Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden
Owl Store
One of the finest Cistercian monastic ruins in Europe with an elegant Georgian water garden and medieval deer park.
Established 2014 selling contemporary men’s fashion and accessories. Brands include abcl japan, filson, kestin hare, private white, portuguese flannel, schott, sunspel, universal works, ten c and wild bunch shoes as well as other exciting brands from around the world. The store has now moved to 6 Montpellier gardens locally known as The Montpellier Quarter.
From humble beginnings the magnificent abbey was established by devout monks seeking a simpler existence. The atmospheric ruins that remain are a window into a way of life which shaped the medieval world. When the socially ambitious John Aislabie inherited Studley Royal, he set about creating an elegant water garden of mirror-like ponds, statues and follies, incorporating the romantic ruins into his design. Green lawns stretch down to the riverside, a perfect spot for a picnic. Riverside paths lead to the deer park, home to red, fallow and sika deer and ancient trees; limes, oaks, and sweet chestnuts.
Owl’s philosophy is to have its own identity, great quality garments, clean and simple, nothing too decadent with a Scandi feel. Owl has now established a regular customer base with people travelling from across the region to visit the store. It is fast becoming a ‘now go-to’ destination. Why not call in and have a look around and enjoy a different shopping experience. The Best of Harrogate 41
