A note from the editor By haigh simpson

T

hanks for picking up issue seven of the Saltaire Review magazine, which you may have noticed has undergone a bit of a makeover since the last issue. I felt it was a good time to freshen it up a bit and I hope you will agree that it represents an improvement on previous issues. Either way I am always happy to receive feedback from readers regarding the design and content “If of the publication. Which brings me to a dilemma I have spent much of this last month mulling over. Some of you may be wondering why there has been no mention of ‘Treegate’ in the magazine, despite the debate raging among many local residents. And if the magazine is here to discuss local issues then how can it ignore such a hot topic?

a story and be fair to both. I have to be able to fact check every claim for accuracy and offer a right to reply, which with a staff of one and a myriad of other jobs to do is almost impossible to achieve with any real success. Not only that but it invites a situation where a readership is divided over an issue and residents begin to take issue with the magazine.

the magazine is here to discuss local issues then how can it ignore such a hot topic?”

This is where I have had to make a firm decision on where the magazine stands and what our policy is on local issues. While several people have kindly suggested or put forward contributions on topics of debate, I have to acknowledge that there are always two sides to

That flies in the face of the very reason I launched the magazine in the first place, to celebrate and promote cultural activity, local events and talented individuals in the village. I do not believe that it is the place of the magazine to be getting involved in these kind of issues at this stage and therefore I will continue to follow developments as a curious observer rather than an active participant.

Having said that, I think it is a great credit to the village that we have such a passionate population who care about their environment and are prepared to stick up for their beliefs. Long may it continue...

Hockney at his vibrant best EDDIE LAWLER REVIEWS THE LATEST HOCKNEY EXHIBITION TO VISIT SALTS MILL By EDDIE LAWLER

o all good things come in threes? Visiting the third floor of Salt’s Mill there are three good things to experience which, together with the other public areas of this Palace of Industry, confirm Jonathan Silver’s litotic opinion, “It isn’t a place where you’ll be lost for things to do.”

East Yorkshire. Maybe it’s a cliché, but the exhibition bursts with life, the life and light of nature as it awakens from winter. Some of the snow is still there, but the sunlight teases out the leaves, the blossoms (especially a swirl of hawthorn which offers a scarf to keep off the chill), and then the flowers of bank and meadow.

The centrepiece of the trio on this floor is David Hockney’s Arrival of Spring, made up of 31 iPad/computer-created paintings reflecting May 2011 day-by-day at Woldgate,

In my preview last month I said there are no humans in this series. But there is one, on horseback in a red road-sign triangle.

A tribute to Denys Salt By dave shaw

S

altaire History Club, with the support of Saltaire Village Society, is proposing to create a permanent memorial to Denys Salt, the great-grandson of founder Sir Titus, who passed away in Austria in late December, and whose ashes were recently interred in Cheltenham in the presence of family and several Saltaire residents. Denys had been engaged in the telling of Saltaire’s history for more than 50 years, and had become a regular visitor to Saltaire, especially since the founding of Saltaire Festival in 2003, to which he came every year. He not only visited as many events as possible, but also gave a lecture on the Salt Family history, and actually appeared as Sir Titus in a pageant in Roberts Park. The park itself has been restored, including the Half Moon Café, but not the drinkingfountain outside the cafe. It’s proposed to

17

restore the fountain in memory of Denys. It has his great-grandfather’s initials above the recess, and of course is directly beneath the statue of the founder. An appeal is being launched to fund the project which, with an inscribed stone plaque, will cost around £2,000. Saltaire Village Society is handling incoming funds, and all are welcome to donate. Donors can do this by post or in person to SVS at Saltaire Bookshop, 1 Myrtle Place, Saltaire, Shipley BD18 4NB. Cheques payable to Saltaire Village Society. Transfers can also be made to the Saltaire Village Society account at Lloyds TSB Bank, Sort Code 30 91 12, Account number 4630298, marking transfers Denys Salt. It’s believed that Denys would be very pleased with this gesture, especially if, as hoped, the work can be carried out in time for the opening of the next Saltaire Festival.

he Kirkgate Centre, Shipley is calling for photographers new and old, amateur or professional, to get involved in this year’s exhibition, Wide Angle. Wide Angle aims to attract a wide range of types of photography, with the objective being for people to look anew at the environment around them. Nearly everybody has access to some sort of camera these days and we want to give people the opportunity to exhibit their views of the world alongside other photographers. We are looking for photographers living or working in the Shipley area to take part, including those who have not exhibited work previously. New and existing work reflecting a theme of the Four Elements: Fire, Water, Air and/ or Earth as well as non-digital work made using the older photographic processes are encouraged.

23

To enter, please send an artist’s statement about your work (of about 100 to 200 words) and up to six images to gallery@kirkgatecentre.org. uk. There will be a small group choosing the work for display, and if your work is selected you will be invited to come and meet us at the centre. The deadline for submissions is Friday April 10th with the opening event taking place on June 6th. The exhibition will then continue through June and July. Wide Angle at the Kirkgate Centre will also feature photographs of the Kenmore Salon by Nudrat Afza, and an Instant Photo exhibition called One Day in Shipley. This is an opportunity for everyone in Shipley with a camera phone to email in their photos, which we will then print out and turn into an instant exhibition. There will also be photographic self-portraits by members of the Older People’s Day Service at Kirkgate on display.

Joe Solo @IRREGULAR ROOTS 11TH APRIL, the kirkgate centre

By joe grint

Joe Solo will be making the long drive across from Scarborough to bring Kirkgate Irregular Roots his stories and songs on Saturday 11 April.

Live, Joe has a growing reputation as both a performer and raconteur, being thoughtprovoking, comical and punch-the-air political - often in the same breath!

On top of releasing ten albums in the last eight years, Joe has written a book, runs a research project on the Hull Pals Battalions in the first world war, worked with underprivileged children to help them write their lives in song, has recorded two audio books, and still found time to open for the likes of Chris Wood, Otis Gibbs, Robb Johnson, Edgar Broughton, TV Smith, Justin Sullivan and The Blockheads, whilst his songs have regularly featured on a wide range of radio shows.

Passionate, political, percussive and at times deeply deeply funny, Joe is a force for good in what can sometimes be a bleak world – the perfect antidote to all those party political broadcasts! If you haven’t visited our monthly acoustic nights at the Kirkgate Centre yet then this is the ideal night to put that right. With a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, well stocked bar and a supporting artist to open the evening there really is no reason not to be there!

Cantaloupe @pleasure grounds 16th april, Caroline St social club

By gus bousfield

soundtrack and featuring mesmeric guitar and synth patterns, not forgetting drumzilla Dave from Cowtown, MKBL have enough oomph to crack the Leeds-Liverpool canal basin.

It’s the fourth Pleasure Grounds of the year at Caroline Social Club and as ever there’s another powerful lineup. Thursday 16 April features Cantaloupe, the Nottingham BBC 6 Music favourites described as ‘brilliant’ by Peel offspring Tom Ravenscroft, and ‘all wobbly and brilliant’ by Huw Stephens on Radio 1. They continue their UK tour with a stop at Pleasure Grounds, and last month saw them premiere their debut album Zoetrope on Hello Thor Records. True to form it’s a dense, consistently inventive collection of synth hooks and excursions, now featuring otherworldly vocal lines from Eleanor Lee. After performing great sets at Liverpool’s fantastic Psychfest and the inspiring Bradford Threadfest last year it’s a fantastic coup to get them up to Saltaire.

Finally, in the early slot are locals Gurgles, picked by MJ from Hookworms in his NME Bandcrush. Fuelled by over-driven Fender Rhodes, synth and space echo Gurgles combine Eureka-era Jim O’Rourke’s quirkpop adventures with prog Cardiac-ish arrangements and Steely Dan. And DJ Souki De Foucauld Esterhazy from the regular Thursday Simpatico sessions at the Belgrave in Leeds will be providing the beats and metaphysical mood in between. Advance tickets available from RADstudio, Saltaire, The Record Cafe, Bradford and Jumbo Records in Leeds.

Backing them up will be Leeds powerproggers Monster Killed by Laser. Unleashing a West Yorkshire riposte to the Suspiria

Discount Comedy Checkout Club 3rd april, Caroline St social club

By rachel bannister

The first time I saw Discount Comedy Checkout was at The Bradford Playhouse back in 2013. Playing to a packed out basement bar, the four performers exploded onto the stage with their unique blend of character comedy, competitions and sketches. From the off you knew you were in for something different, when an ailing and elderly lady with compression stockings worked the room telling everyone to fill in a slip with crazy scenario ideas for one of the games later on.

Now, you need to know that this isn’t a show for the easily offended, weak of heart or delicate disposition - they’ll take what you say and twist it into something that will have you laughing your socks off and desperate to come up with the next suggestion for them to improvise around. Every single show is unique because it hinges on the audience participation. If you’ve ever wanted to see a giant jelly man attack New York City, a salesman try and off-load a headless camel on a TV shopping channel, or a musical romance blossom between a kitchen sink and a fridge, then this is the show for you.

The show descended into the crazy ride that is every performance that Discount Comedy Checkout do. They’ve been running for six years and it definitely shows in their slick delivery. I have seen them four times now (including a private gig at my wedding!) and they’ve never missed a beat. No suggestion, no matter how zany, has floored or silenced them. They even give out prizes during the show…. You don’t get that on Whose Line Is It Anyway!

Caroline Street Social Club in Saltaire will be host to the next performance on Friday 3 April at 8pm. Tickets are less than £5 which makes for a very Good Friday indeed! Get them from www.wegottickets.com/event/313065 or google Discount Comedy Checkout..

Eddi Reader @saltaire live 21st MARCH, victoria hall

By DAVID TURNER

It’s not often that a chart-topping hit is performed by the original artist in Saltaire, but in the midst of her set at Victoria Hall on 21 March Eddi Reader picked up her acoustic guitar and delighted the crowd by breaking into Perfect, her number one hit from 1988, when she sang with Fairground Attraction. However, throughout the rest of the evening Eddi Reader showed that she’s anything but a performer living on past glories and why she has become a major singer in her own right. Her devoted following turned out in force, the Yorkshire crowd bolstered by fans from across the north of England. They were rewarded with a show set amidst the character and atmosphere of Victoria Hall, a venue which suited Eddi’s style in a way that a modern purpose-built hall never could. With her were her regular band – accordion, stand-up bass, guitar and ukulele – a subtly understated ensemble who make the ideal complement to Eddi’s full-flavoured vocals. Throughout the evening variety was the name of the game as she showcased her back catalogue, including a stunning version of Robbie Burns’ Ae Fond Kiss and numbers

34

from her current album Vagabond, and even treated the audience to a pleasingly unschmaltzy rendition of Moon River. If the Saltaire show was anything to go by, Eddi is clearly a performer who relates to her audience not just as a singer but as a person. There’s a strong feeling that many are fans not just of her music, but of Eddi herself – as evidenced by the adoring cheers that rose whenever her name was mentioned before the show. And who can blame them – her easy, freeflowing rapport between songs had the feel of a small club gathering rather than a 400 capacity sellout. Late in the show she told the story of family gatherings where people would call on her mother to sing, and had the audience re-enact the scene, crying out ‘Come on Jean’ as she responded with girlish embarrassment and modesty. A bold attempt which could so easily backfire, leaving us squirming in our seats - however, such is Eddi Reader’s natural ease that she effortlessly engaged and charmed the room - even a natural cynic with a low cringe threshold such as myself.

Richard Smyth By HAIGH SIMPSON

Who are you and what do you do? I’m Richard Smyth. I write novels, short stories and history books, compile crosswords, draw cartoons, write for various magazines, and set questions for BBC Mastermind. When did you start writing seriously? I’ve been a full-time freelancer since 2008 - but I think I’ve been writing seriously for as long as I’ve been able to write. Is there a particular piece of work you are most proud of ? My first novel, Wild Ink. I wrote it when I was 23 - a horribly long time ago - and it was published last year.

What is your favorite book of all time? Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov. But ask me again next week and it’ll be something different. What’s the best thing abut being an author? Probably the job prospects and financial security. A-hahaha. No, the best thing is the writing. What’s the worst thing about being an author? I think it’s pretty great, really. The downsides are pretty negligible. How do you combat writers block? I tell myself to stop being a self-pitying wuss and damn well get on with the thing...

What’s your relationship with Saltaire? I’ve lived here for a few years now, just on the edge of the village (splendid views of the building-site).

What are you working on at the minute? Another novel - it’s set in the 1920s, and it’s about a rogueish American visionary who plans to turn a Yorkshire fishing village into a second Coney Island. I’m currently in rewrite purgatory.

Where do you get your ideas from? I wish I knew! Things tend to just sort of appear in my head and I’m halfway through the story before I pause and think wait, where did this come from?!
