MEET THE VISIONARies behind the soon-to-be-opened saltaire canteen, who are attempting to change people’s attitudes about food waste and create a social hub in the heart of the village I meet Duncan Milwain, the presence behind the Saltaire Canteen, along with fellow director Richard Ramsden at Vicars Café, which the Canteen will shortly replace. Talking to Duncan, there’s a curious mixture of driven determination and happy
accident. He’s worked hard in unfamiliar areas, made connections, done deals and overcome preconceptions to reach the point of opening the new establishment using intercepted food, with a pay-as-youfeel policy.
All this happened after a decision to take a step back from his day job as a lawyer, and a chance professional encounter with Adam Smith of the Real Junk Food Project, of which Saltaire Canteen will be an autonomous part. Duncan describes himself as “the first of a very short line of lawyers in our family,” and even his entry into the profession sounds fortuitous, as he describes how plans to study botany were overturned by a teacher who picked up on his debating skills. “There’s only one David Bellamy,” he was told, “You should do law!”
The decision to open Saltaire Canteen is bound up both with the Real Junk Food Project’s vision and Adam Smith’s charisma. Duncan says, “He’s a man on a mission. Very focused but a nice chap. With the wrong person his head could have been turned by what has happened.” Those happenings include serving Greg Lemond during the Grand Départ, interviews with CNN, Channel 4 and the BBC, and being ranked as one of the ten most influential men in the world – alongside Leonardo di Caprio, Mark Wahlberg and some famous (or unknown but very rich) philanthropists – by the AskMen website.
Following the advice he enjoyed and made a great success of the profession, initially in The vision of the Real Junk London and then for the Food Project is the focus for last 15 years in the north, the future, with its mission TOTAL value of food wasted to reduce food waste by and found time to explore an interest in charities and intercepting food that would each year in the uk social enterprises - such as otherwise be thrown out by Saltaire Canteen - within his supermarkets, restaurants or professional life. distributors. Duncan explains, “We’ve got links with a number of large food organisations, who’ve said, “You can Adam Smith returned to Leeds from take our food, if it’s gone past the sell-by Australia and found Duncan via Google date.” when looking for a charity lawyer. Duncan did the legal stuff, set up the company and Adam got going with the project. They’ve already sourced more than enough That might have been that. However, the food, but are careful about names. Some idea lodged in Duncan’s head. “I’d made a companies may want to keep their profile separate decision to take a step back one out of it, and they don’t just want to provide day a week to do something,” he says, “I big corporations with a bit of ‘greenwash’. wasn’t sure what it was going to be but it Richard is an award-winning food blogger was like a jigsaw, with things fitting into - them-apples.co.uk - and he clarifies the place. In April or May this year, the Shipley status of food intercepted, “There are two Food Project got going. Other pieces fell dates: the best before date and the use by into place, and that’s why we ended up date. The best before date is completely here.” arbitrary. The use by date is the

“Some people are dictated to by what’s on the label. What we want is get people to be a bit more confident with food.” drop-dead date – you don’t use food after that. We’ll be operating in that window.” Duncan adds, “Some people are dictated to by what’s on the label. What we want is get people to be a bit more confident with food.” Changing people’s attitudes to food and food waste through education is a vital part of the project. A further aspect is the pay-as-you-feel basis, meaning those who can’t – or don’t want to – pay can eat for free. When asked whether this is needed in Saltaire, Duncan comments, “Obviously, in Armley [the original Real Junk Food Project café], there’s a demonstrable need. Most people don’t see that in Saltaire. I think that’s wrong, because I think there is hidden need, it’s just not quite as obvious as in some parts of town.” In addition to this need, the Canteen is “a place to educate from. We hope that we can start from here and then work in other parts of Shipley, and wider.”
chucked away instead of being grown in a field and ending up on a plate is just bad.” I wondered if a new player offering potentially free food might – regardless of motivation – cause concern among other businesses in Saltaire’s crowded café and restaurant market. It shouldn’t, according to Duncan. In Armley, “People have been brought in who wouldn’t otherwise have been there. There’s a demographic that you wouldn’t normally get coming.” He accepts Saltaire is different, but still anticipates the only people eating for free will be those who wouldn’t otherwise be going into cafés in the village. For everyone else Saltaire
Although the Real Junk Food Project has no religious affiliation it clearly strikes a chord of Christian charity, as Duncan, tonnes of food thrown Richard and other Saltaire away by TESCO IN THE first Canteen board members six months of 2013 are regular worshippers at St. Peter’s, Shipley. “The additional driver for us,” says Duncan, “is that we have a Christian ethos. I feel that food that gets

Canteen will be just one more option, as Vicars was.
Duncan also sees positives in locating the project in the village. “Our three councillors are Green. One of our principles is caring for the environment. Saltaire is probably open to that.” Richard backs this up, “It feels like a good fit for this kind of place. There’s a great sense of a society in Saltaire that is very much aligned, we hope, with what we’re trying to do.” What they do will be run by a mixture of staff and volunteers. There’ll be a couple of paid individuals to ensure things work in restaurant and kitchen. Around that, they already have several volunteers. “What we would like to do in due course,” says Duncan, “would be to work with people who might be marginalised. Maybe kids who have not done so well at school or older people who may be a bit lonely. We
want this to be seen as a place where they know they can go and be supported.” As for the food, he comments, “Just because it’s intercepted, it’s still got to be good food.” Duncan has always enjoyed cooking, and previously fantasised about opening a café or restaurant. “My wife put me right,” he quips. However, he now has the scope to live that fantasy, so I ask if he plans involvement in the cooking. “I’ve said to a couple of guys who might be applying for the job of cook that I’d be happy peeling onions and learning from them. But it’s going to be no more than that!”Judging by the adventure he’s been on for the past few months, I wouldn’t be too sure! The Real Junk Food Project has launched a campaign to buy its original premises in Armley. To support the appeal, or for further details, go to therealjunkfoodproject.

counting down to christmas THE SALTAIRE lIVING ADVENT CALENDAR WILL BE LIGHTING UP WINDOWS THROUGHOUT THE VILLAGE AGAIN THIS DECEMBER By David Humphreys
With unprecedented interest this year, the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar will get off to a flying start, with six shops and community buildings with windows in place from 30 November, and seven more houses being illuminated from 1 December. This means a record number of 36 windows will ‘open’ and it’s also hoped the early opening of 13 windows will encourage visitors to the village right from the beginning of the month. The aim of the Living Advent Calendar is to
world. The organisers are delighted to hear of other communities who have taken up the idea. The windows will be revealed, one more each evening, from December 1 until December 24, and a leaflet with a map of the windows is available from the Saltaire Tourist Office. This allows visitors to follow the trail in their own time and at their own pace. If the weeks before Christmas are too hectic then there’s a chance to view the windows later, as the displays are open until 5 January. In a new development for 2014, students from The Centre of Excellence at Shipley College are designing an online map of the village with 3D graphics to add another dimension to the experience of the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar. This can be found at the Saltaire Inspired website www.saltaireinspired.org.uk The design of each window remains a strict secret until the day it’s illuminated, although from past experience the variety of themes are likely to range from humorous to topical concerns to traditionally seasonal and wintry. Saltaire has a large artistic community, but
“Even the organisers have no idea what the participants are planning. Whether tongue in cheek, beautiful or topical, each contribution adds up to a great event.” involve the residents of the World Heritage site of Saltaire in putting on a heart warming event that re-creates the magic of Christmas. Each night until Christmas Eve an additional house in the village will reveal one new illuminated window. Now in its ninth year, this event not only helps to cement the strong community feeling within the village but also attracts the wider public to the World Heritage site. The Living Advent Calendar has an amazing following on Facebook, from 29 countries around the
the emphasis of the event is to let everyone take part, although we’re always happy to see returning regulars such as the primary school and churches. This year’s co-ordinator Kate Thompson explained that she first took part in 2011, not having done anything artistic since school. She feels her role is now to encourage people to rediscover a sense of creativity, “There’s always a few snags to be overcome. Last year one house had a power failure a few hours

recognised as a centre for the visual arts. After the Calendar the next Saltaire Inspired event will be the Saltaire Arts Trail in May 2015.
“Even the organisers have no idea what the participants are planning. Whether tongue in cheek, beautiful or topical, each contribution adds up to a great event.”
The Living Advent Calendar is one of a number of events talking place in this UNESCO World Heritage site in the run-up to Christmas. The Village Society organises a Christmas Tree Lights Grand Switch-On from 4pm on Sunday 30 November, with carols, a band and mulled wine. There’s also an opportunity for residents and visitors to visit community stalls to find out about activities throughout the year. On Christmas Eve there’ll be lantern-lit carol singing around the trail of illuminated windows; a truly magical event.
“In 2013 we reached new audiences after being featured on the BBC’s Look North. Although they filmed the windows and village during daylight hours it successfully captured the Christmassy feel of the event.” The Saltaire Living Advent Calendar is supported by Saltaire Inspired, an ambitious arts charity, creating quality contemporary arts events in unique settings. Saltaire Inspired delivers three annual arts events in the World Heritage village of Saltaire, and also works with partner organisations towards our vision - to help Saltaire become internationally

FANCY A PINT? THE MONTHLY EVENT THAT OFFERS MUSIC LOVERS THE CHANCE TO SHARE AND APPRECIATE GREAT MUSIC IN A FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT By ROB PRIOR
I remember moving to Baildon in 2000, and even Bradford in 1991, and finding it difficult - if not impossible - to get a decent, well-kept pint. I was shocked. As an oftcumden (and a southern oftcumden at that) with a Yorkshire father and growing up in a house where Sam Smiths was drunk regularly alongside Fullers London Pride, I could not believe that most Shipley pubs only sold Tetley or John Smiths or even Worthington, and most were overwhelmed with lager of the most chemical and industrial variety. I am happy and excited to say those days are well behind us and there’s a plethora of fine ale houses, bars, wine bars, bistros, breweries and microbreweries all within a relatively short stagger of one another along our marvellous section of the Aire Valley.
Start your journey at the Boathouse in Saltaire, but don’t linger long, for Don’t Tell Titus, the Caroline Street Social Club, The Hop, the Rosse and the newly opened Cap and Collar all beckon. Each one has its own unique atmosphere and serves a decent cask or keg ale on any given day, accompanied by craft ales or European or even Yorkshire lagers and Pilsners. No pub crawl in our section of the Aire valley would be complete without a visit to Fanny’s Ale House (once family home for Sheila Gilhooly, legendary DJ John Peel’s second wife) where the modern real ale and imported beer revolution in Saltaire and Shipley was born again at the tail end of the last century. It’s a short walk from there, in a Shipley direction, to cross the busy main road to the more traditional Victoria Hotel (closed at time of writing), then cross with care again to the very old school Shipley Pride as you enter Shipley itself. The food choices have been varied and wonderful on the way through, but save some room for two more fine hostelries: the excellent Fox on Briggate in Shipley, and Tony Gartland’s brand new Saltaire Brewery Tap, a little detour off the main road and over the canal swing bridge on Dockfield Road on the end of the World
Famous Saltaire Brewery. The brave, the foolhardy - or those who have paced themselves sensibly - could continue the walk with a circuit up into and out of Baildon, past the multiple CAMRA awardwinning and microbrewing Junction, but that’s the subject of another article! I know Chris at The Fox offers a T-shirt for drinking the enticing contents of his fridge - maybe one of our amazingly creative entrepreneur readers could design a T-shirt and registration system to be collected for completing this not-insubstantial pub crawl?
“No pub crawl in our section of the Aire valley would be complete without a visit to Fanny’s Ale House” There are many other pubs, bars and restaurants in Shipley and Saltaire, but the route I have described here takes in the gamut of ‘gentrified’ and commercial pubs, traditional ale houses and taverns, with something for just about everyone, and I’m sure you’ll find your favourite. Please drink in moderation and responsibly, but enjoy the amazing array of local Yorkshire beers, ales and lagers on offer in each of the pubs on this Airedale crawl, right on your doorstep.

A DEeper perspective david starley explains his journey from archaeologist to professional artist By HAIGH SIMPSON
How would you describe your art? I’m a traditionalist in my use of oil paint on canvas, but my technique - using a painting knife to apply heavy layers of paint - is very contemporary. As well as the physical thickness of the paint I also try to use colours, tones and textures to increase the apparent depth of the work. I’m always happy when a viewer tells me they feel they could walk into my painting! What inspires and influences the work you do? Whether figurative or abstracted, I always aim to capture the spirit of a particular place in my paintings. The area around Saltaire is rich in evocative landscapes, from the open moors to the pockets of woodland, not to mention the architectural heritage of the Bradford area with its tradition of building in stone. As a trained archaeologist, I’m particularly drawn to ancient monuments and the internationally renowned prehistoric rock art of our region has a particular fascination for me. What is your relationship with Saltaire? After growing up in Warwickshire I travelled widely without really putting down roots. I already had links with Bradford through study and research at the University, and was initially attracted to Saltaire because of the history and architecture of the village. Since moving here in 1999 I’ve realised that Saltaire’s greatest appeal is its community - a diversity of folks who are genuinely welcoming and willing to put themselves out to benefit the community. The wide range of events on our doorstep, including performing and visual arts, are amongst the benefits of living here. As ever,
I’m looking forward to the Saltaire Art Trail in May when I have a chance to open my own home to visitors. What is the most memorable scene you have ever painted? A tough question. The landscapes including prehistoric rock art are amongst my favourites, and in particular one of the Badger Stone on Rombalds Moor. It’s too dark and brooding to be commercial, but to me that work creates a direct, if undefined, link back to those artists who thousands of years ago expressed their own creativity and gazed out on a similar landscape. What’s the best thing about being an artist?. I’ve always loved drawing and painting but as a schoolboy was discouraged in favour of more ‘useful’ subjects. It’s now extremely satisfying to have returned to my passion as a professional artist. One of the wonderful things is to become so focussed and absorbed in a piece that you lose all sense of time and location - as near to an out of body experience as I’ve ever had. What have you got going on at the moment? Too much! In November I moved into a new studio at Dockfield Road, Shipley (handy for the Saltaire Brewery) so that needs to be set up for painting. There’s also the commercial side, which as a selling artist I cannot afford to neglect. This month, as well as my regular gallery stockists, I’ll have two solo and two shared exhibitions, together with a display in my Saltaire home for local buyers. When I get the chance I’ll be trying to expand a new series of woodland and forest views, where I’ve been experimenting with the use of an increasingly limited palette of colours.

DAVID APPLIES THE FINISHING TOUCHES TO A NEW CREATION IN HIS STUDIO
DAVID STARLEY BIOGRAPHY I’m proud not to be an art college graduate - my qualifications are in Metallurgy and Archaeological Sciences! However, a number of parttime art courses have been influential. The first was at Sydney University, which provided a welcome diversion from work in a steel foundry. Outside art I’ve worked at a wide range of jobs. To fund my travels I picked bananas, oranges and avocados, ‘split’ scallops, shelled crayfish, worked as an operating theatre orderly, youth hostel warden and a Tasmanian National Park guide.
The Sydney foundry was one of three metallurgy jobs, whilst archaeology included digging on numerous sites in the UK and abroad before a longer stint as an archaeometallurgical specialist for English Heritage in London, and finally as Science Officer at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Leaving the Armouries my aim had been to balance archaeometallurgical consultancy with one day a week painting. However the result has been exactly the reverse as the painting has really taken off. www.davidstarleyartist.com

THE CITY GENT MAKING BANTAMS HISTORY
A cover quote from the legendary Beatles biographer and football journalist Hunter Davies immediately caught my eye. “This is the best illustrated history of any club I have ever read.” Some claim!
AUTHOR AND BRADFORD CITY HISTORIAN JOHN DEWHIRST DISCUSSES HIS LATEST EXPLORATION INTO THE BANTAMS PAST
I met with John and collaborator John Ashton later that week at the Boathouse, keen to find out how the book came about and also to learn of John’s involvement in long-running fanzine, The City Gent. The journalist in me threatened to clash with the modesty of the book’s author, who is reluctant to claim the limelight. We quickly came to an agreement and conversation turned to our shared passion.
By HAIGH SIMPSON
Like many Bradford City supporters of my age, childhood birthdays and Christmases rarely passed by without a claret and amber mug or key ring to add to my collection of City memorabilia. It was the heady days of the Premier League back then, Bradford City had a club shop to rival Manchester United and the club were churning out all manner of tat. I’m sure somewhere there’s a box of memories hidden behind piles of old books and video tapes, but until recently I hadn’t given them a second’s thought. Then came a heavy package, dropped through my letterbox one dreary October afternoon. On went the kettle and out of the packaging came a heavier than I’d imagined History of Bradford City in Objects. The book is the latest by Shipley-based Bradford City historian John Dewhirst.
One cup of tea soon became two as I lost myself in nostalgia. Old programmes, cards, stickers, hats, scarves, badges and posters evoke memories from those days when it always seemed to be sunny. Knowing the quality of John’s previous books and projects I should have expected nothing less, but I was blown away by the quality and sense of purpose of my new favourite book.
John began supporting the Bantams in 1972, having nagged his dad to take him as a nine year-old. Much to his father’s surprise he was hooked immediately, and even a drab 2-0 defeat wasn’t enough to put him off. It was hardly a vintage era for the club but from that day on, Bradford City was part and parcel of who he was. We discussed the idiosyncrasies of following a team whose successes are so few and far between, John summing up his experiences perfectly, “If you go once in a while, you’ll not get anything from it whatsoever. It was less about the spectacle of football - because
“What was satisfying about the magazine was that it allowed City to have something that other clubs didn’t have.” it wasn’t a spectacle - it was more about repeat behaviour. In the end it becomes a habit, it becomes entrenched in your life.” This entrenchment continued through school and then university, until 1984 when John stepped it up a level, co-founding The City Gent fanzine with fellow city fanatic Brian Fox. While Brian took care of the editorial side of the operation, John was responsible for the management and operational duties. It was the beginnings of what is now the Football League’s longest running fanzine. John explained the initial idea behind the fanzine and the motivation behind its publication: “What was satisfying about the magazine was that it allowed City to have something that other clubs didn’t have. It meant that my club was top of a league, not Man United or Liverpool, it was all about Bradford City.” The fans responded accordingly and The City Gent took off. By the late 80s it was shifting more than 2,500 copies every six weeks, a huge proportion of the crowds at
the time. “I didn’t think it was a movement at the time and I didn’t know what the word fanzine meant. But it caught on and other clubs replicated it. All of a sudden there was a mushrooming of these kind of publications, every club seemed to have one.” “After the Bradford City fire in 1985, it was also about trying to give a positive impression of a club associated with disaster. In the late 80s there was a real tangible bond between the players, the club and the supporters and The City Gent reflected that in many ways.” Work commitments and a desire to move on to new projects led John to walk away from The City Gent in 1989, after five years, including three as editor from 1986 to 1988. His experience at the City Gent fostered a passion for the history of the club, paving the way for the many projects that followed. Another man to develop that passion was Dave Pendleton, who was instrumental in the formation of the Bantams
29
Past museum, which would become the inspiration for John’s latest book. John Ashton, who also took a lead role in Bantams Past, takes over the conversation to explain how the museum came about. “It arose out of the Centenary Exhibition in 2003, which was the first time a real effort had been made to collate all the different objects and memorabilia from the club’s past.” The temporary exhibition – put together by Dave Pendleton - attracted thousands of visitors to the Industrial Museum to view the collection and the possibility of a permanent home was soon mooted. The following year Bantams Past had its own website and not long after set up as a museum in its own right, sharing a building with the club shop at Valley Parade. The sale of the building to the One in A Million Free School in 2012 drew the curtain on a successful few years for the museum and once again left the collection without a permanent home. But the museum left behind a legacy in the form of a digital archive of photos of objects from throughout the clubs history. Items ranging from programmes and ticket stumps to toys and clothing were catalogued, telling the story of Bantams fans over an entire century. This is where John Dewhirst stepped back in, teaming up with John Ashton to develop the idea for a book of objects. Speaking to them it’s clear that a huge
amount of passion and planning went into this project and it’s encouraging to know that my own feelings of nostalgia were an intended reaction. “By open admission I am a compulsive collector, and there was a danger that the book could have become an anorak’s manual. But I think what has come out of this is that a lot of people are seeing it as nostalgia, and particularly a nostalgia of childhood.” John says. “You can compare a programme that you remember seeing as a kid to one that your dad had when he was a kid, and even his dad or granddad. So what you’re seeing is change, but you are also seeing continuity.”
COMPETITION! John Dewhirst has kindly donated a copy of A History of Bradford City In Objects to be given away in a special Christmas competition. To be in with a chance of winning send a single tweet to @SaltaireReview describing your first memory of supporting Bradford City.
John Ashdon added, “I think it demonstrates that memorabilia is nothing new, people were collecting things connected with the club all the way back in 1903.” John Dewhirst had a profound moment at this point, and I couldn’t help smiling in agreement, “The thing that’s appealing about the history of any football club is being part of something that’s a bedrock of a community, of a civic identity. You are following in the footsteps of people who have gone before and you see that in objects.” John claims this generational continuity was one of the major attractions of the museum, allowing objects that had been
hidden away in cupboards and attics to be shared by fans and making the history of Bradford City accessible to all. In essence, that’s what he’s trying to do in his new book and it shows. Just as he set up The City Gent back in 1984, John has created the sort of thing you’d normally associate with a club like Man United. But it’s not, it’s Bradford City. Once again it allows City to be top of a league and that should be applauded. The book is available to buy via Amazon or from bookshops in Bradford, including Waterstones, Salts Mill and the Bradford City Club Shop.

By HELEN Ketcher
Performing alongside Scott will be AFC Baggy, described by World Of Comedy as, ‘One extremely funny man’. Baggy will have you rolling on the floor with his keen observations and wit. To complete the lineup you have Sean Morley – a unique mix of surrealism and sharp wit, Jonny Pelham - nominated for best newcomer in the 2014 Chortle Awards, and story-telling style comedian Rivka Uttley, pinned as ‘funny & forthright’.
Following the success of last year’s show, the Don’t Tell Titus team are once again hosting the Winter Wonderland Comedy Show at Victoria Hall on 19 December. Featuring five great stand-up comedians and pre-show festive food, the evening is a great-value night out at the unique historic venue of Victoria Hall, right in the heart of Saltaire. Topping the bill is Scott Bennett, self-styled comedian & carvery expert and English Comedian of the year runner-up 2014. Scott has rapidly established himself as one of the fastest rising stars on the UK circuit, after starting comedy in 2009. With a warm and engaging delivery he is a Yorkshire live wire with an undeniable no nonsense logic. In demand by many of the big clubs, Scott delivers wry observations on the absurdity of modern living. His sharply written routines have been delighting audiences across the country since being selected for the prestigious 2013 Big Value showcase at the Edinburgh fringe - the show that’s been a

DIVA!
@Shipley Film Society Shipley Film Society welcomes the new year with a one-off free showing of the cult classic Diva! By ELLIE CLEMENT
Combining unique cinematography and an intelligent script Diva! is a story of an opera singer, a teenage opera fan with a bootleg tape of the singer, two Parisian mobsters, a corrupt Chief of Police and a tape linking the cop to the mobsters. The battle over the whereabouts of the tapes forms much of the crux of the innovative plot. Credited with starting the resurgence of interest in foreign language films in the 1980s, the film still receives rave reviews. If you’ve not attended a Shipley Film Society (SFS) event before you’re in for a rather different cinema experience. Firstly we positively encourage you to bring along a donation for Bradford Metropolitan Foodbank to each film showing. Definitely not a multiplex, Shipley Film Society shows films at the Kirkgate Centre, a community centre. With a bar serving wine and local beer as well as homemade cake the atmosphere is definitely focussed on the community. Seating is on plastic chairs - they’re stylish, but many viewers bring their own cushions. SFS also has a line in family cinema, where the emphasis is definitely on fun - from the
singalong Mary Poppins to the pie fight after Bugsy Malone, these have been great events – look out for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in February. Since SFS started in 2010 we’ve always shown an interesting mix of films to suit most tastes, often with a short before the main feature. An enthusiasm for film is all that’s required to get involved, and new volunteers are always welcome! *All we ask is that you bring a donation for Bradford Metropolitan Food Bank with you for this film. PLUMHALL @IRREGULAR ROOTS
Keep the 13th December free in your diary as Shipley’s kirkgate centre hosts a bradford duo with a star-studded cv and a growing reputation as one of folk’s hottest acts By joe grint
The Irregular Roots series of concerts held at The Kirkgate Centre in Shipley is steadily carving out a reputation for itself with superb gigs by Maia, Mestisa and the Rebekah Findlay Trio already under the belt. Next up in the series is a concert by Bradford based duo Plumhall, who are still celebrating the release of their excellent (and enthusiastically reviewed) début CD Thundercloud whilst already planning the follow up album. Plumhall are Michelle Plum (Chumbawamba, Waking the Witch, The Accidental Tourists) and Nick B. Hall (Hall Brothers, Magna Carta). Between them they’ve supported major artists including Fairport Convention, Hugh Cornwell, Show of Hands, Glenn Tilbrook, Aimee Mann, Ralph McTell, The South, Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls and Larkin Poe. The pair deliver guitar and harmony-driven textures of folk, Americana and pop, and, as well as releasing the aforementioned CD, have been impressing audiences on the live acoustic circuit in the UK for some years now. They’re recent winners of the Yorkshire Gig Guide Outstanding
Songwriters award 2014, and were recently joined on stage by Bob Dylan’s legendary guitarist Larry Campbell. As well as featuring selections from the Thundercloud album the duo will present an exclusive preview of songs from their much anticipated next CD. Support on the night will be from Leeds songwriter Gary Kaye, who has a well deserved reputation for penning and performing songs that raise awareness of major issues whilst remaining entertaining and involving. Gary has supported Plumhall on a number of previous occasions and the combination makes for a thoroughly enjoyable and stimulating evening. With superb artists, tickets at a very reasonable £6 (£4 concessions), a wellstocked bar (including Sam Smith’s Organic Ale and other bottled beers) and a warm welcome this really does have the making of an excellent evening – particularly as Plumhall’s developing national profile could mean they’ll be increasingly scarce on the local scene in the future! LIVE MUSIC GIG REVIEWS
hard to avoid the feeling that they want to be about hardscrabble blue-collar American life. She’s very good and has the capacity to be a lot better.
luka bloom @ THE live room By MIKE FARREN
On my first visit to the Live Room it’s immediately clear that the place is all about the music. The postage-stamp stage that’s comfortable for one would be cosy for two, and leaves no room for ostentatious band showmanship. The small side-table with a vase of flowers only emphasises this. Fortunately there are two solo acts tonight who are also all about the music, and a nearcapacity crowd eager to see them. Young as she is, Jess Morgan is already a Live Room veteran, albeit previously accompanied by her cellist partner. Tonight she’s solo, and dressed-down in sober black but for a pair of fetching bird-feather earrings. Her voice is clear and her guitar style includes an almost percussive element, giving a powerful heartbeat to her songs. Those songs are good, just not yet quite good enough to escape the idiom. They may well be about her native Norfolk, but it’s
Luka Bloom by contrast is at the top of his game and has been there for years. His banter with the crowd would create an immediate rapport, if it didn’t clearly exist even before he steps on stage. Also dressed down, sipping from a tea mug and with a stand of three guitars the only additional stage furniture, he immediately establishes not only his musical quality, but also the big-hearted humanitarianism that so distinguishes him, through the song I Am Not At War with Anyone, which he dedicates to the children of Gaza. Bloom is his own man, taking from folk, country and other singer-songwriter styles. He is respectful but engaged with his cover versions – Dylan, John Martyn – and able to draw from more than a forty-year backcatalogue of his own material. There’s plenty from recent albums Head and Heart and This New Morning, but he’s more than willing to take requests from the past, including a moving version of The Man is Alive about his father living on in him. There’s audience participation and banter about the club’s wallpaper, while he even takes a one-man stage invasion in his stride, despite being kissed. “I thought I’d joined the Happy Mondays”, he deadpans. “Even looks like Bez!” For more info visit theliveroom.info
ESPER SCOUT @ Pleasure GroundS By ANDY ABbOTT
Pleasure Grounds is a night run by Saltairebased musician, composer and producer Gus Bousfield, bringing acts from the Leeds/Bradford DIY underground to the quirky surroundings of Caroline Street Social Club. This instalment had a focus on angular indie rock. First up were Leeds-dwellers Unwave. Their intricate progressive sounds transported me back to the early 2000s, watching bands like June Of 44 and Polaris explore the darker end of the post-rock spectrum. I’m not sure if Unwave know who the US band Rodan are, but they’re doing a good job of rekindling the musical links between Yorkshire and Louisville, Kentucky regardless. Matt’s guitar playing is uniquely cracking and despite the lo-fi working men’s club sound, Unwave’s innovative song structures and tight playing shine through. A new EP is on the way, we’re told, and, if tonight’s gig is anything to go by, it will astound. I miss Invisible Cities but I’m assured from a reliable source that their proggy Battles/Don Cab meets Tortoise with a dash of Godspeed You Black Emperor instrumentals are perfectly executed and well received. Esper Scout headline the evening. There’s a buzz around this Leeds all-women quartet, as some of their recordings will be released
by the notable Kill Rock Stars label later this year. Their sound is less ‘rawk’ tonight than when I’ve seen them previously - perhaps it’s something to do with the miniature drumkit all the bands have used - and reveals a more slacker-indie side to the group. Still, the band’s super-solid playing and a general blues-rock undertone have me thinking that, in a different time, Esper Scout would have made an amazing thrash metal group. I’m reminded of Rid Of Me-era PJ Harvey, and even elements of arena rock-loving grungers Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Esper Scout’s tunes are strong and delivered with a confidence and proficiency often missing in the current crop of 90s revivalists. It’s clear to see why they’re turning heads and I left thinking they could be one of those bands that, in a few year’s time, people will have a hard time believing played a social club in Saltaire to a handful of people. Overall, another well curated and super pleasant Pleasure Grounds do. Saltarians should be jumping at these opportunities to get a taste of the regional underground on their doorstep for next to nothing. For more info visit bingleymusiclive.com

Featuring a mix of performers from Bradford, Leeds and across the country, the idea behind the event is to put on an interesting mix of alternative music that pushes boundaries while being accessible. Coming up for its first anniversary, it has hosted a spectrum of bands and DJs including Cowtown, Galaxians, Esper Scout, Rough Fields and London’s Snack Family, as well as DJ Ed V8ctor and DJ Souki de Foucauld Esterhazy from Belgrave Music Hall . A compilation album from the first year is being mooted. The next night is on Thursday 15 January and features the outrageously excellent Nope, Math-beat disconcertionists Third Thumb and Chris Sharkey, a fantastic guitarist from Acoustic Ladyland.

it’s hard to believe that I get to do this for a living. Most recently we finished one for a band we’re big fans of, the Marmozets. Now our creation is being used on tour around the world. It doesn’t get much better than that. Who are the most interesting clients you’ve had?
We’re still a very young company but I’d say the international orders are always the most interesting. There was this one for a band called Lesser Key from LA - we built the guitar without ever meeting or even speaking on the phone. When we finally got to meet them it was great! The band invited us to go VIP to Leeds Festival so we could witness the guitar’s first gig. If you could pick any artist to play one of your instruments live, who would it be?
CHRIS DOBSON
QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONs
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Chris Dobson and I make bespoke, handmade guitars and basses from our workshop on George Street, Saltaire. When did you start building guitars and how did it come about?
I started building guitars around two to three years ago. But it’s only this year that I started to do it full time. It all started off as a repair service for local musicians, which led to us designing our own custom instruments. The repair work we did heavily influenced the designs we came up with. We took a lot of elements that didn’t seem quite right on other manufacturers offerings, and refined them to make what I feel is a much better overall instrument. Is there a particular guitar you are most fond of ?
To be honest I’m proud of every single one! It’s such a great feeling watching someone play their new guitar for the first time. Sometimes
Personally I would love to work with Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World. Their music has been a big inspiration to me so, Jim, if you’re reading this - call me!! What are you working on at the moment?
We have all kinds of crazy instruments on the go at the moment. It’s great to see such varied ideas when it comes to customers ideas and requirements. We seem to have a lot of interest in basses at the moment, with many heading overseas. How do you decide what it is you’re going to build and what it will look like?
We spend an awful lot of time deciding on the specification for each instrument we build. It usually starts by laying different combinations of wood out together in the workshop. We always consider the tone we want to create first, but also the overall look of the finished instrument. Sometimes it can take weeks to finally decide, often sending countless emails to customers to make sure they’re 100% happy before work starts. For more information visit www.alpher.co.uk.
