Locals reject St Ives parking proposals

Plans to introduce parking charges at St Ives Estate are to be reconsidered after a petition objecting to the plans was presented to Bradford Council. 5,592 people objected to the proposal, which would have seen parking fees introduced seven days a week. Pam Laking, chairman of the Friends of St Ives said, “For the very small projected income the council hopes to achieve from this proposal, it’s hard to reconcile it with the major negative issues it will generate for the public and the village of Harden.” “The visual impact of parking meters and associated signage on the estate would be very unattractive and managing the whole scheme would be difficult and probably lead to a great deal of confusion and unpleasantness for the public,” she added.

New book celebrates Bingley’s history

A new book by local historian Alan Cattell will provide an insight into Bingley life over the last 170 years. The book, Bingley - A Living History, includes 90 personal accounts of life in Bingley spanning back to 1847. These include actress Muriel Aked, suffragette activist Nellie Kenney and English Channel swimmer Barry Watson. The book also includes a series of photographs showing the changing landscape of Bingley over the years. Mr Cattell, 68, of Park Road, Bingley, said, “The book is a snapshot of what Bingley was like and how it has changed. I’m seriously interested in where I live. People who read the book will be able to find out more of what Bingley is about.”

Festival celebrates Leeds Liverpool bicentenary

Sunday 16 October 2016 marked the bicentenary of the first complete crossing of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and Bingley and neighbouring Saltaire celebrated in true style. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, pealing bells, a brass band and cheering crowds welcomed the Kennet, a former working boat and now a museum, to Saltaire, before the boat set off on its historic journey to Bingley where more bells rang out and crowds awaited by the famous Five Rise Locks. The Kennet was recreating the full 127-mile journey and would take in 91 locks in all, with the journey on Saturday alone navigating Hirst Lock, Dowley Gap Lock, Bingley Three Rise and Bingley Five Rise, as a grand flotilla followed on. Activities took place across Bingley from the canal towpath itself through to the town centre. Indoor and outdoor markets at the Arts Centre and Market Square showcased local and homemade goods, whilst choirs, musicians and even a ukulele band entertained a crowd of all ages at the top of Five Rise.

Bingley Music Live has been awarded Outstanding Established Festival at the Yorkshire Gig Guide Grassroots Awards, which recognises the best in regional music venues and events.

Planning approved for Bingley bar

An empty unit opposite Bingley Railway Station is to be converted into a bar after plans were approved by Bradford Council. The former hair salon is set to be turned into a business called The Rail Yard.

John Verity The Bradford-born guitar star discusses his career in music and looks ahead to a homecoming gig at Bingley Arts Centre. by Haigh Simpson

12 Lead Feature

In a career spanning over 45 years, John Verity has earned a reputation as one of the country’s finest guitar players and played alongside a host of star names. Alongside his band he has released over 30 albums and completed numerous tours, the latest of which will see him return to his hometown for a performance at the Bingley Arts Centre on 11 November. Q. What sparked your interest in music and inspired you to become a guitarist? Girls! I found I was much more attractive with a guitar in my hands…

and didn’t really seem to settle anywhere for very long after that. Once I had discovered guitar playing it didn’t really matter where I lived though, as I would either be practicing in my bedroom or in a rehearsal room with my new-found friends – bandmates who loved the music as much as I did.

I was in my teens in the ’60s when there wasn’t much music on the radio, but I did manage to find enough to inspire me to look I called one of my recent albums It’s A further and found that a lot of what I liked Mean Old Scene. Only Bradfordians of my was coming from America. I was lucky in that generation are likely to understand why! a few of my school friends were like-minded and we would share records and I’d play Q. What made you change the band’s them in my bedroom on my little Dansette record player over and over again whilst name from Tunnel to the John Verity posing in the mirror with a cricket bat instead Band...and how did that go down with of a guitar! your fellow bandmates? Pretty soon I wanted a real guitar and pestered my parents until I was given an unplayable Spanish acoustic guitar to learn on. Like a lot of aspiring young guitarists in the UK at that time I wanted to be Hank Marvin of The Shadows, so I got an electric guitar as soon as I could, though I quickly realised my first mistake – the one I’d chosen didn’t have a tremolo arm, essential to get the Hank Marvin sound. So my first foray into being in a band meant I had to be rhythm guitarist…

Tunnel was the band I was in when living in America in the late ’60s/early ’70s. It was an amazing time and we were playing some fantastic gigs but there were bad things going on in the background. In a nutshell we discovered our manager was a gangster and the money that was financing us wasn’t strictly legal. The others in the band wanted to get out of the situation right away and leave, but I wanted to compromise and tell the manager that we were unhappy and make the break amicable. To cut a long story short the guys didn’t agree, and decided to leave.

Q. Do you have fond memories of growing up in Bradford - how did the city impact I stayed behind and recruited two American on your music? I have very fond memories of Bradford, but much of my childhood Bradford is now gone. We lived in Sellars Fold, Great Horton until I was about nine years old but the houses were due for demolition so we had to move,

musicians to do the gigs that were planned, and changed the name of the band. That was the very first John Verity Band.

Q. Is there a particular song or album you’re most proud of ? My writing has matured over the years. I’m really pleased with some of my recent stuff and I wrote six of the ten songs on My Religion. My strongest so far. Many of the reviews of the album have said that I saved the best ’til last, meaning my song Oh Why, the final track on the album, which is really pleasing as the sentiment - although very simple - means a lot to me…

Q. What is the strangest thing that ever happened to you on tour?

I think I established my style vocally, and on guitar quite early on and really if you hear early recordings of me and compare them with current ones you’ll see that there isn’t a huge change. I’ve matured!

Q. Have you had many low points throughout your career? Like a lot of my peers my life has been a rollercoaster. Loads of mistakes, lots of regrets but you just have to keep going and try to put things right as you go.

Sadly, it’s not always possible to put things right… I’m a positive guy (I think) and when things get low I just get on with getting them Spinal Tap moments?! There have been many. I used to go off and get changed in the high again. middle of the Argent set during an extended keyboard feature. One night the dressing Q. Are you looking forward to coming room at the gig was several floors above back to Bradford for your performance the stage and when I came out with my at Bingley Arts Centre? When was the fresh clothes on the lift had returned to the last time you played in Bradford? ground floor without me – and someone had wedged the door open, so it couldn’t return I always look forward to coming home, back to me stuck on the umpteenth floor! I seeing familiar faces and hopefully making did eventually find the stage again but the some new friends. My last show in the rest of the band and the audience must have Bradford area was at Bingley Arts on the bill thought I’d gone AWOL! with Mick Ralphs in January 2015.

Q. How has your style developed through the years and what motivates you today? Well, I started off just wanting to be a guitar player, then I wanted to be a better guitar player and was quite happy with that. The next jump was when the band I was in opened the show for The Who, and the special guest that night was Terry Reid. Terry just knocked me sideways with his incredible voice and that made me want to be a singer. Incidentally you may not know that Terry Reid was one of the choices to be the lead vocalist in Led Zeppelin, but of course Robert Plant got the job…

Q. What can people expect from the show? Quite a few songs from My Religion of course, along with some old favourites from our previous shows. Some blues/ rock standards played in my own style, and who knows, we might even slip in a taste of Argent! Those who have seen us before will know we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and it’s about having a good time – and makin’ a racket!

The Airedale Symphony Orchestra

by Rosie Firth

We are very lucky that our region is home to one of the oldest and most successful community orchestras in the UK. Often performing to near-capacity audiences at their regular venues - Kings Hall, Ilkley, and Victoria Hall, Saltaire - the Airedale Symphony Orchestra has long treated both young and old to the delights of classical music. Founded in 1898, the ASO has built up an excellent reputation for its varied programme, including regular concertos from guest soloists and occasional collaborations with regional choral societies. Conductor John Anderson has steered a steady course in his 28 years at the helm. Telling me how the orchestra has changed since he took over, he remembers how it was formerly known as the Keighley and District Orchestral Society, which performed at the Temperance Hall in Keighley on Tuesday evenings. In 1983, the name was changed to Airedale Symphony Orchestra, the venue changed to Kings Hall in Ilkley, and the concert day changed to a Sunday. The orchestra has since gone from strength to strength. They are always keen to reach out to new audiences however, and in addition to their regular four concert season, have some exciting additional performances coming up. On 17 December they will perform their first ever Christmas concert at Christchurch in

Ilkley. A combination of film and Christmas music, it’s a deliberately lighter programme that promises to be a fun and festive must-do. And watch out for the 2017-2018 programme, as it will be the orchestra’s 120th year and they plan to celebrate this impressive achievement with a big gala concert. One exciting project John was keen to let audiences know about is the orchestra’s involvement in The Battle Of The Somme Centenary Tour. To mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme, 100 performances of a 1916 film of footage from the conflict will be shown nationally, as professional and amateur orchestras perform Laura Rossi’s score live. Incredibly, when it came out in 1916, the film was watched by half of the British population and the score that music composer Laura Rossi wrote to accompany it in 1998 received five star reviews. The ASO will perform it on 2 July 2017 at Kings Hall, and it promises to be a memorable and moving occasion. On the day of the

performance school children will be invited to an open rehearsal, which will be a wonderful opportunity for them to be amazed at the range of instruments they can see and hear. Children are very welcome at performances, and John is always seeking new ways of engaging young players and audiences. These upcoming events are a drive by John to engage more with the community. In today’s world of fast-paced, multi-sensory and immersive leisure pursuits, he wisely recognises that the orchestra must, if not keep pace with these changes, understand and respond to them. Modern audiences have, in turn, to grow to understand the unique pleasures of attending a classical musical concert. I believe we all can have a relationship with classical music. It may be one nurtured in childhood and honed over the years, it may be a blossoming but enthusiastic one like my own, or it may be one that is yet to begin. When I fully engage with a piece, it gives the sensation of soaring above the everyday. Even when I’m only half engaging, this too has enjoyment because it 20 Community Feature

gives the mind a chance to wander. Alone with your thoughts, yet gently accompanied by the music, it is a truly rewarding and relaxing experience. The Airedale Symphony Orchestra had 19 members in 1982 - today it boasts 65. Coming from all walks of life, they are a committed group who share a passion for making music. Being a charity means there will always be financial pressures and sponsorship is still sought after, but as John himself says, “We don’t worry about that side too much. At the end of the day, making music is what we all love to do.” And they do it very well. The Airedale Symphony Orchestra has made a significant contribution to the cultural life of the region and, with the support of both loyal and new audiences, and under the energetic leadership of John Anderson, long may it continue to do so. The Crossflatts

Over 50s Group

The local community centre providing friendship, day trips and a host of activities. by Haigh Simpson

Tucked away behind a block of apartments off Keighley Road lies a charming little place that is home to the Crossflatts Over 50s Community Group. The group has been going strong for over 60 years now and offers a friendly environment for people wishing to socialise, join in activities, enjoy days out and make friends. It operates an open door policy and encourages new members to come and join up, many of whom find it becomes an important fixture in their lives. The Centre is run by a volunteer management committee headed by Chairperson Susan Rhodes and Treasurer Colin Rhodes. The Committee meets once a month to plan activities, seek funding and develop ideas.

along with Hilary, with the organising of guest speakers and musicians, outings and other social events at the Centre, and says, “It’s our aim to always provide a variety of entertainment.”

Susan has been here 15 years and says, “None of what we do would be possible without a strong working committee and the support of my husband Colin.”

The aim of the Centre is hopefully to provide something for everyone. The group hosts Wednesday entertainment, coffee mornings, domino and darts afternoons, bingo, a gentle exercise group, and craft and knitting sessions where goods are made to sell at seasonal events such as spring and Christmas fairs.

Hilary Watkin is the President of the Centre and has been a regular visitor for over three years. She said. “I was curious to see what went on here and I’ve never looked back. It fulfils a lot of Once a month a Friday film club and Saturday people’s requirements socially and is important luncheon club are held to meet the needs to some who can often be lonely.” of some members who often feel lonely at weekends. Eileen Askey, the Vice Chairperson, is involved,

24 Community Feature

Some of the activities so far this year have included an outing to the Dales with a stop in Grassington and a meal on the way back, and a trip to the Ice Show in Blackpool. We also had a very enjoyable party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. A visit to Eden Camp was enjoyed at the end of September and they held a coffee morning in October for Martin House. A Christmas Fayre is planned for 23 November and a Christmas Lunch at Millstones in December. The Centre is financed through a mixture of subscriptions and public funding, with all monies raised invested back into the organisation and its activities. Membership is only £7 for the year and members pay £2 each week, which goes towards the entertainment.

A recent grant gave the group the funding to have redecorating work done, and this was carried out in August. New comfortable chairs were bought, giving a bright, fresh look to the Centre. Hilary said, “Occasionally a person can be a little wary about making their first visit to the centre, but we’re a welcoming group and try our best to make everyone feel as comfortable as we possibly can.” While the sessions at the Centre are very well attended, the group actively encourage more people to come and join. Susan said, “We know there may be many lonely people out there who are unaware that we are here. Several of our members have explained what a difference coming to the Centre has made to their lives.”

Brian Preston

A tribute to the well-loved member of the local jazz scene, Brian Preston, who passed away last month. by Richard Speight

Bingley Jazz Club is mourning the death of much-loved member and local resident Brian Preston. Brian’s participation in the Bingley jazz scene goes back over 50 years. He came to prominence as a drummer with the Old King’s Head band, led by Malcolm Webb and Dennis Armstrong in the 60s, and continued playing as Malcolm’s regular drummer right through the Brown Cow years, retiring from the scene with Malcolm when Webb’s Famous New Orleans Jazz Band played its last residency at Rishworth. He also featured prominently with John Pashley’s band at The Anchor in Brighouse through the 70s and depped with a good number of other local bands. Brian was a fine drummer with an uncluttered, metronomic style of playing that was ideally appropriate for the New Orleans music that he loved so much. Front-line musicians enjoyed his backing because they knew he would always lay it down for them in an unobtrusively helpful way, and other members of the rhythm section appreciated his acute sense of teamwork. He even tried his hand at singing in later years and it is not many months ago that he sat in on drums at the club in York Street and performed in robustly cheerful form.

Street and our great sympathy goes to his wife Anita and the rest of his family.

He was, simply, a lovely man, seemingly uncomplicated in outlook, always optimistic, cheerful, thoughtful and reliable. He loved New Orleans jazz with a passion and put a high value on the friendships that it brought him. He was also highly respected at his places of work which included lengthy periods at Fields printers in Lidget Green and Bradford Royal Infirmary. We shall miss his presence at York

The best of Bingley by Haigh Simpson

Potting Shed

The Coffee Lounge

The Potting Shed has proved to be a gamechanger in Bingley, establishing itself as an essential stop-off on a night out in the town.

With its central location overlooking Bingley’s town square, the Coffee Lounge is a great place to sit and watch the world go by. On a good day you can even sit outside.

The interior captures the zeitgeist and plays on the Potting Shed theme successfully. The venue is equally welcoming on an afternoon or an evening, with a selection of wood-fired pizzas and juicy burgers served in an informal and atmospheric environment.

The cafe has been around for a few years now although the interior has been refreshed recently, giving the place a light spring feel that brings to mind the Bake Off tent.

The crowning glory is the superb beer garden - you can take refuge in one of its brightly coloured sheds or kick back on the roof terrace. Keep an eye out for live music nights mid-week and the upcoming series of ShedFest events.

40 The Best of Bingley

An impressive menu covers all bases from cooked breakfasts to healthy salads, with a daily specials board helping to keep things fresh for regulars. The tempting selection of cakes is in generous-sized portions and they can be bought with a coffee for ÂŁ3.95.

The Octagon

St Ives Estate

The Octagon’s owner John Pennington will be no stranger to many, thanks to his longstanding role as a councillor in the area and a long history in the local entertainment industry.

Situated midway between Bingley and Harden, the St Ives Estate is a stunning country park that’s a huge hit with families, dog walkers and anyone else who loves the great outdoors.

Named after its unique shape, The Octagon is a specialist live music and entertainments venue with a busy schedule of acts, including comedians, cabaret and tribute performers.

The estate boasts a mixture of woodlands, open moors, and wildflower meadows, with a range of walking routes depending on how far you want to go.

It also houses a 100-capacity public bar, open every day from 4pm and also available for functions and private events.

The adventure playground is a fantastic facility for children, while the Coppice Pond offers both fishing opportunities and a chance to feed the ducks. The opportunity to explore means you should definitely visit more than once.
