Plans to launch Bradford print fair

Despite Bradford’s rich and illustrious print heritage there is no print festival. Until now! The Bradford Print Fair is an initiative by local illustrator Katie Holmes and aspiring theatre producer Anna Parker, who aim to establish a print fair in Bradford worthy of its stature and heritage as a print city. The event brings together creators, makers and lovers of design and print to celebrate emerging and established talent. From original prints and affordable gifts, there is something for everyone. The inaugural print fair will take place as part of the North Parade Festival in Bradford, 22nd July 2017. They are seeking local artists who wish to participate, and aim to crowdfund £500 to cover costs in producing and marketing the event.

Lineup announced for Bingley Music The line-up for Bingley Music Live 2017 has now been completed, making it one of the strongest in the festival’s history. New additions to the line-up come in the form of heavy hitting artists such as Sundara Karma, Badly Drawn Boy and Twin Atlantic who will be taking to the main stage across the weekend.

Music fans will also have the chance to catch some of the UK’s hottest new acts on this year’s Discovery stage, headlined by overnight sensation Tom Grennan, London gals The Big Moon and hotly tipped locals The Orielles. They are joining an already full-tobursting weekend programme for the Bradford Council-run event on 1-3 September at Myrtle Park, which so far boasts Manic Street Preachers, The Kaiser Chiefs, The Wombats, Maximo Park, Pete Doherty, Soul II Soul, Feeder, Milburn and Cabbage.

Work begins on St George’s Hall renovation

Renovation work on Bradford’s historic St George’s Hall has begun after a contractor was appointed. This major refurbishment – the first in over 30 years – will revamp the auditorium and the frontof-house area. Work has been underway for the past year behind the scenes with site surveys, conservation specialists, architects, specialist seating consultants and interior designers making preparations for the project. Surveys have been made into the ceilings, walls and structural supports in the bar and front of house areas. The state of the stonework and of the electrics could not be properly assessed until indepth exploration took place with everything inside the building being taken out. The exploration revealed that more extensive work will have to be carried out than was previously expected which has resulted in the estimates for the work increasing. The total project cost is now £8.2 million with £1.5 million coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Headliners revealed for Literature Festival

From Game of Thrones to cricket, via William Blake, Bradford Literature Festival returns with a programme of events like no other. by Georgina Lennon

Bradford Literature Festival, in association with Provident Financial Group, has announced 2017’s new, exciting events and literary greats. The now iconic festival, held for ten days from 30 June to 9 July, has always considered literature in its broadest possible sense, celebrating the wonderful world of words that connects everything from poetry to music, fiction to science, theatre to sport. This year’s guests include literary greats Jeanette Winterson and Ben Okri, worldrenowned poets Jackie Kay and Linton Kwesi-Johnson, feminist Germaine Greer and historian and politician Shashi Tharoor. There’ll also be a trio of events on Yorkshire cricket, held in association with The Cricketer Magazine, Tiff Needell, host of Top Gear and Fifth Gear, joins the festival for a look into the world of Formula One, and there’ll be a fittingly adult celebration of Harry Potter’s 20th birthday - Potter’s Potions, a bespoke cocktail-making class in the dungeonesque setting of Bradford’s stunning Sunbridge Wells. At the Bradford

Literature Festival there’s something for everyone. Fans of film and theatre will be thrilled by this year’s programme. With films as diverse and wide ranging as Holy Terrors, which brings to life the macabre tales of Welsh writer Arthur Machen, and the highly controversial Lipstick Under My Burka, banned in India for being ‘too lady orientated’, with its scenes of feminist rebellion, there’s plenty to keep cinema lovers entertained. There’ll also be a series of exceptional theatre productions - Bradford-born Asif Khan brings his debut play Combustion, a fabulously comic take

on young British Muslim lives in the north of England, and celebrated poet Lemn Sissay will perform his internationally acclaimed Something Dark, recently added to the national syllabus.

For parents of teenagers, the festival’s Young Adult strand will come as a welcome relief. Radio 1 DJ and fashion stylist Gemma Cairney joins this year’s A-list line-up for a frank discussion on the highs and lows of growing up, king of controversy and YA author Melvyn Burgess, whose novel Junk defined a decade, will join Glamour columnist and LGBT activist Juno Dawson to discuss The Books They Don’t Want You To Read, and there’ll be interactive workshops on everything from Manga drawing to opinion writing to performance poetry.

Joanna Trollope 1.30pm, Saturday 1 July

Headliners include:

This year’s dates have moved the festival further into the summer months, and, with a spectacular line-up of free family fun days held in Bradford’s own City Park sun trap, families will be spoiled for choice this July. The first weekend - Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 July - will see superheroes descend upon the city, followed by a fairytale wonderland of mythical characters, whilst the second weekend - Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July will see Bradford’s first Teddy Bear’s Picnic, and the finale, a Harry Potter extravaganza, promises a magical end to what is sure to be an incredible ten days.

Gemma Cairney, All about Me 2.15pm, 3pm, Saturday 1 July

The full programme of events is now available via the festival website, including a digital version of the festival brochure, and with events already selling out, literature lovers are encouraged to buy tickets now to avoid disappointment! Tales from the tracks The Queensbury Lines, a Bus Tour by Glyn Watkins

For three years vintage bus tours have departed North Parade to visit various lost aspects of Bradford’s social history. From sports grounds that no longer exist to the last resting places of sporting notables. On Saturday 10 June the 2017 edition is taking to the tracks. Forgotten and long ripped up tracks. The trip will explore stories from Bradford’s abandoned railways. Join us as we squeeze the bus under low bridges with Glyn Watkins giving a running commentary via a megaphone. We will also be joined by James Mackenzie, a Mastermind winner whose specialist subject was the lost railways of West Yorkshire! Trippers will gather at the Record Cafe on North Parade at 11am for a noon start. This year’s conveyance is a vintage seventytwo seat Leyland open top bus - for the technically-minded it’s a Leyland Titan PD3 267 with Northern Counties bodywork. We aim to return to the Sparrow, North Parade, by around 5pm. Tickets will be on sale at the Record Cafe and Sparrow. The £10 ticket includes the bus tour and food. Our tour will take in the city centre, Thornton, Denholme, Cullingworth, Harecroft, Queensbury, Clayton, Great Horton and Park Avenue. We will be making a beer stop at the

George in Cullingworth and will later dine at Bowling Old Lane Cricket Club. At the latter we will be once again eating one of Naz’s legendary curries. Two years ago people were literally scraping the bottom of the bowl! We will also be drinking a specially brewed beer from Old Spot Brewery of Cullingworth. Bowling Old Lane are playing Gomersal in the Bradford Cricket League on the day of our visit. Once again the trip is supported by the Record Cafe and Sparrow on North Parade. The Queensbury Lines - a Bus Tour, Saturday 10 June, Record Cafe, North Parade, £10.

Highlights of the tour include: Intemperance and a Clayton tunnel death Lies, the FA Cup and a Queensbury chimney Bradford’s forgotten main line stations Bowling Old Lane v Gomersal in the Bradford Cricket League Specially brewed beer by Old Spot Home made curry

Bradford goes Classic

by Sue Denim

The ever popular Bradford Classic show is back for its twelfth year, in the multiaward winning City Park on Saturday 12 August from 10am to 4pm The event’s organisers are making a final call for car clubs and individuals who may wish to showcase their classic vehicles, with prizes being offered for Lord Mayor’s Choice and Best In Show winner and runner up. Enthusiasts are being urged to apply as soon as possible to secure a space, as places are now very limited. This year’s show has already attracted a high number of entries, with the earliest example attending once again being the 1920s Ford Model A, as well as the ever classic Jaguars and Bentleys. People can come down to City Park and enjoy live music from local bands and solo artists playing on the main stage throughout the day.

There’ll be plenty to keep the kids entertained, with numerous fun activities - including face painting, the challenging ‘spider mountain’ and a bungee trampoline. There’ll also be the opportunity to view an amazing selection of classic police vehicles displayed by the Bradford Police Museum. This is a fantastic family fun day and it’s FREE! Jonny Noble, Bradford’s city centre manager, said, “Once again this year’s Bradford Classic is shaping up to be a fantastic family day. We’ve added a number of new additions to the show and also extended the range of activities for children, so there’s loads to keep the whole family entertained. “There’ll be a full day of music on the stage and also the ever popular ‘auto - jumble’ where people can buy a range of classic car memorabilia, and to cap it off the Rose and Brown vintage fair will once again be taking place in City Hall.” To apply for a space for your club or car, please email ccm.team@bradford.gov.uk or call 01274 432412 to request an application form.

On the cover... Ben Holden by Haigh Simpson

How did you get into illustration and when did it become a career for you? I managed to blag a job as a junior designer for a software company with no experience whatsoever while quite young. Dull work but friendly people and great for learning the software skills needed to progress. The more creative stuff came through music and being in and around bands, making posters for gigs and events and whatnot.

crying shame it’s unused, sadly a common story in town - beautiful abandoned buildings going to rack and ruin. Some of the client design stuff I do can be quite restrictive and regimented so it’s good to let loose, break the rules and play with texture and colour. Using Highpoint’s brutal aesthetic with Risograph, graphic elements and paint gives it some love and attention, just for fun really.

How would you describe your style and how did it develop?

Is there a project or piece of work you’re particularly proud of ?

Pretty bold, abstract, colourful. I like super sharp clean design and typography but just as happy to mess things up a little. It’s developed purely through experience and doing it every day. Things are more handson these days, choosing pen, paint or pencil and paper over staring at screens for hours.

Loads of gig posters and projects over the years, but I’ve really enjoyed working on a project in York called Vespertine for the past few years. It’s a series of art events at twilight in interesting spaces.

What was the idea behind your cover illustration? The Brutalist architecture of the old Yorkshire Building Society building has always fascinated me. A towering chunk of empty unused concrete at the top of town. Nestled between pubs and pound shops, people going about their daily business with it looming over them, pretty stark. It’s a

I have a current obsession with Risograph printing and started a new project using the process. I love the aesthetic of Riso and the whole process. Being able to go from concept, design and print independently DIY style is really fun and satisfying. Although it’s restrictive, with its quirks, I think that pushes creativity.

Shop for Victory will launch only on Facebook and other social platforms will be used to raise awareness and link back to FB page. This campaign will run up to the summer. 15 micro-films ready for release focusing on the key messages the campaign aims to deliver with more content to be created by the DMA. First week of campaign will include 5 poster films with a steady stream of content built up over the past few months. Following the end of the Shop for Victory campaign in the summer, DMA will begin the next phase of this promotion with Instagram – Local Community Heroes using local photographers to capture the market. The third phase will be the launch of Market TV on Youtube to begin in the autumn.

22 Community Feature

Bradford Markets are encouraging people to shop local and support their markets with a new World War 2 inspired social media campaign. The ‘Shop for Victory’ campaign aims to raise the profile of Bradford’s markets by highlighting the heritage and expertise of the market trader as well as the quality of produce available. The campaign was launched on the 24th May to coincide with Love Your Local Market Fortnight 2017. A series of 15 videos include trader interviews, cutaways and background footage from across Bradford Markets with a particular focus on City Centre traders. The campaign will see several key traders participate in a ‘David v Goliath’ style promotion where traders vocalise the advantages and benefits of shopping at their market, their own journey in

becoming a market trader and the future of markets. The video footage is taken on site of traders in Kirkgate, Keighley, Oastler, St James’s Wholesale and Saltaire Markets and includes individual interviews of a handful of traders in each market. The WW2 poster theme is used as a template to superimpose images of real traders in Oastler to drive key messages of the campaign to the shopper – ‘Your Markets Need You, ‘We Can Do It’, ‘Deserve Local Food’, ‘Shop for Victory.’ The markets are reaching out to the public for support, highlighting the importance of shopping locally for the welfare of their community, their local economy, employment and entrepreneurship. Simon Couth, Head of the Working Academy at Bradford University said, “The Working Academy at the University

provides a unique opportunity for its undergraduates and recent graduates to gain the the real industry experience of working on a properly commissioned digital project. “During the commissioning and production process there is the opportunity to hone technical skills against the brief set by the client. Also to develop an understanding of time management, project coordination and communicating with diverse groups. “We love what the Bradford Markets team are trying to achieve in promoting the traders and what they offer. They want to attract new shoppers into the Markets and we hope that this Facebook campaign will help them to reach some different audiences. Our students involved in the filming have certainly become regular shoppers!”

Refugee Week raises its game by Deb Collett

We have a good track record in Bradford when it comes to flying the flag for Refugee Week. This annual national jamboree is to celebrate the contribution that refugees and asylum seekers make to our city and communities, whilst also trying to help the wider community understand a little better why people are forced to migrate and seek sanctuary. The programme is pulled together by a friendly and ramshackle bunch going by the name of the Refugee Week Planning Group - anyone of good will who turns up plus a hard core of people drawn from groups and organisations that want to show support and solidarity with refugees, and delegates from refugee groups. There are regular ingredients to the programme - an exhibition, BEACON’s Walk for Justice, a launch featuring the work of Schools Of Sanctuary, the BIASAN party and the International Refugee Day. This year we’ve been able to expand our horizons, thanks to some energetic commitment and useful bits of funding to 26 Preview Feature

help us on our way. First up is our exciting new Film Strand – some of which is all singing and dancing. Don’t miss Friday night at Bradford Cathedral where Cry Of Love – a heady mix of Fame and Ubuntu – is showing. FUSE have returned to the themes of their excellent work in Parallel Republic by showing some graphic citizen journalism and film making from Syria, and is hosting a mobile journalism workshop. Millside and Delius Centres are putting on community film shows. The National Science and Media Museum is also on the team sheet, with the glorious Dream Of Shahrazad. And entrance is free, for everybody, to all of these events and every single event throughout the week. It seems increasingly urgent that we clearly demonstrate our support and solidarity with refugees. It’s not enough to be a City of Sanctuary - we have try and make it a reality in the face of hostility and an austerity agenda that is diminishing the groups who have been active over years. This urgency has brought about an unprecedented willingness to get involved

and to donate resources, the most valuable of which is time. Volunteer work has greatly increased our capacity to reach out and encourage involvement from a really wide range of organisations. So our programme includes a self-organised refugee picnic, discussion, debate and storytelling at Speakers’ Corner, a jazz concert and a posh launch attended by the Lord Mayor. As Refugee Week coincides with Ramadan this year, we’re having the International Refugee Day on Saturday 1 July, so everyone can enjoy the feast. Grange Interlink has been a very welcoming new venue for this fun packed conclusion to the week. We’re chuffed to have Shah E Mardan performing, and a scratch choir. Workshops from Bradford Literature Festival Storytelling to Cecil Green Arts puppetry. And running alongside all this is the legendary football tournament. So, there’s much to celebrate during this week and a great deal still to do. Make sure you shape up, show up and join in.

Bradford Festival acts and events by James Lee

Bradford Council has announced a host of high quality acts and workshops for this year’s Bradford Festival in Bradford’s award-winning City Park 28-30 July. First up, there’s the innovative and colourful street theatre. Celebrated women’s street theatre company Circo Rum Ba Ba brings The Crow House, a silent movie-inspired show using acrobatics, silks trapeze artistry, hat juggling, musical saw and harp playing, puppetry, audience participation and slapstick comedy! One of Cardiff’s most exciting, original and eclectic companies and pioneers of all things retro, vintage and the wonderfully absurd, Kitsch & Sync Collective will stage, Bedraggled. Three beauties are swept up on City Park’s shores, serenading shipwrecked sailors with their sublime, sultry sounds, but these mermaids are nothing like those in fairy tales. Innovative British street theatre company Acrojou will show All At Sea, a theatrical installation set in a boat. A lone boatman

traverses a vast ocean of memories and past hopes, accompanied by his own personal storm in a moving and atmospheric row-about. Bristol-based Cake Ladies bring their flamboyant stilt-walking show by the same name, a saucy roaming tea party dishing up sweet treats with a touch of glamour. These colourful human tables will serve a visual and gastronomic feast of charm and confectionery. And musically, this year’s Bradford Festival has an eclectic range of local, national and international artistes for a wide range of tastes. Ice Cream: The Opera, by local arts organisation Freedom Studios, is a charming 30-minute act written by Ian McMillan and performed in and around two ice cream vans, telling the story of lovers Romano and Geetha who are trapped in a

hostile family feud. Geetha and Romano proclaim their love and try to calm the situation but are caught in the crossfire with dramatic consequences. Lovers of rock and pop will enjoy the powerful beat-driven and melodic sound of Rupert Stroud, one of a breed of hotlytipped West Yorkshire musicians currently attracting the attentions of regional and national audiences. Highly original alternative indie band, Fie! Fie! Fie! from Birstall, who were nominated for the Outstanding Band Award at the Yorkshire Gig Awards, combine guitars, vocals, percussion and soulful harmonies with added sincerity and wit in equal measure and will have Bradford crowds screaming for more. Fans of classical world music can experience the delicate and soulful

harmonies of the ancient erhu, or Chinese violin, played by master virtuoso, Ling Peng. Her career began as a child prodigy at the age of seven, performing to thousands during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. She fuses western art forms with Chinese, bringing new perspectives, new audiences and new understanding to both Chinese music and culture. Innovative, Delhi-based The Ska Vengers blend ska rhythms with elements of dub, punk, jazz and rap to produce refreshingly different, energetic and danceable music, introducing politically and socially relevant themes into their work. For those who want to participate, use their hands and learn new skills, this year’s festival will again offer chances for children and adults to try out a wide range of creative and fun activities.

Calamity Jane at Bradford Playhouse

Join The Bradford Players at the Bradford Playhouse for this musical Western, adapted from the celebrated stage-play and film starring Doris Day and Howard Keel. Calamity dresses like a man, totes a gun and drives the Deadwood City stagecoach. Well-meaning but disasterprone, she tries to help the local saloon proprietor out of a jam by promising to fetch a music-hall star from Chicago, but things don’t quite go to plan. A hilarious comedy, it nevertheless has many tender moments and some very famous numbers, including Secret Love, Black Hills Of Dakota, Deadwood Stage and Windy City. Wednesday 7 June, 7.30pm and Saturday 10 June 7.30pm with 2pm Matinee

Thee Deadtime Philharmonic live

Deadtime continue to receive outstanding reviews for their high octane, raw and emotive live shows. International and national radio airplay for the band has come from Don Letts, Jarvis Cocker and Tom Robinson, to name a few. And now they’re coming to Bradford’s iconic venue, The Mill. Based in ex-mining town Swadlincote, South Derby, still on its knees from Thatcher’s stranglehold on the working classes, Murdoch’s songwriting reflects the carnage left behind. Their militant working class stance caught the eye of Clash legend Mick Jones, who took Deadtime out as special guests. Deadtime will be supported by local alternative rock outfit Kath & the Kicks, who, having played across West Yorkshire and at Saltaire Music Festival, profess a love for more intimate venues and promise this show is one not to miss. Friday 16 June, 8pm at The Mill.

National Science and Media Museum Lates

Stuart Lee - Content Provider

Dreams have long inspired wonder and curiosity. Drawing on the dreamlike quality of our exhibition Poetics of Light: Pinhole Photography, the event will explore the science behind dreaming, looking at how cutting-edge technologies might soon allow us to record and influence dreams, and seeing how pinhole cameras create such enchanting imagery.

Lee returns to the stage with a 90-minute cultured show with no limits or censorship. It’s pure stand-up comedy. Navigating topics of the moment like Brexit and Donald Trump with punchy, vulgar witticism and a mixture of deconstructed jokes and dry soliloquies, Lee’s show transcends the dreariness of current politics with watertight comedy.

The National Science and Media Museum’s runs regular Lates events for over 18s. This Lates evening explores the science and imagery of dreams and dreaming.
