Message from the Headmaster At Fettes, there is much to celebrate past and present, with exciting plans for the future. In August 2018 the Fettes Foundation celebrated its 20th birthday. The fantastic philanthropic support we have from many donors has meant the Foundation has contributed to a remarkable range of projects and initiatives since 1998. My sincere thanks go to everyone involved for their generosity. At Fettes we aim to give our pupils the best possible foundation through the breadth of their education, opportunities beyond the classroom and the benefits of being part of the extraordinary Fettes community. Fettesians are engaging, kind, bright and unique. They are also very busy people. While working hard to achieve their personal goals, they make the most of the opportunities they are offered and make a positive contribution to the community around us. Fettes staff take immense pleasure in seeing our pupils thrive and the students are fortunate to have such dedicated staff working so hard on their behalf. It is particularly pleasing to see our bursary students succeed. These impressive pupils become fully engaged in life at Fettes, quickly making friends and contributing to the school. We are committed to breaking down barriers to offer the Fettes experience to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

With tremendous support we have made considerable progress with our bursary ambitions over the last 18 months. My thanks go to everyone who has contributed to date. I do hope that more members of our community will choose to support bursary provision this year, helping us to provide a Fettes education to deserving children who ordinarily would not be able to access it. For more information, please see pages 14-17. I am delighted we continue to draw strength from connections across our wider community of Old Fettesians, past and current parents and other friends of Fettes who support our aims and engage with our ambitions for the College, the Prep School and our pupils. Fettes recently received the Independent School of the Year Award for best Student Careers Programme. This would not have been possible without the huge amount of time, energy and expertise Old Fettesians, parents and friends of Fettes have freely given. I am very grateful to everyone who has supported the Fettes Career Partnership Programme since its creation in 2012.
On 5th October 2020 the College will celebrate its 150th birthday. We are planning a range of anniversary celebrations throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. Please do read more about our plans on pages 18 and 19 and get involved if you can, wherever you are in the world. Fittingly 2020 is also when Fettes Guangzhou is due to open in Southern China. Alongside philanthropy, this collaboration with Bright Scholar Education Holdings will help us sustain the financial future of Fettes for generations to come. The College has an extraordinary history. Its foundation, made possible by the generous legacy left by Sir William Fettes, was driven by his passion for the transformative benefits of education. May his legacy live on in all that we do for many years to come. Floreas Fettesia!

The Fettes Foundation: Two Decades of Impact The Fettes Foundation was set up in 1998 to raise philanthropic income for Fettes and its pupils. As the school has continued to grow, so too has the Foundation. Over the last two decades, the Foundation has raised over £16.5 million in support of a multitude of projects, which you will see featured on the following pages. These include a number of key capital developments, such as Westwoods, the Grassie Shooting Range and the Spens Building, all of which offer significant advantages to the pupils. It has been 40 years since I attended Fettes and I must admit, I am slightly envious of the Fettesians of today. On a daily basis, pupils enjoy the hugely positive impact of philanthropic support – from state-of the-art classrooms with the most up to date technology to beautiful grounds and comfortable, familiar boarding houses. All of this makes learning at Fettes more accessible, more interesting and, above all, a more enjoyable experience. As a parent, I am delighted that my three boys, now all Old Fettesians themselves, could take advantage of all that the College has to offer during their school days.
Our Founder, Sir William Fettes, understood the exceptional benefits a good education could offer. When Fettes opened its doors nearly 150 years ago, it was to 53 boys, most of whom had their fees paid for them in full. As I am sure you can imagine, this opportunity would have been life changing. It is with an unwavering commitment that Fettes College and the Fettes Foundation will stay true to Sir William’s founding ethos by doing all that we can to increase philanthropic support towards bursary provision. It is deeply uplifting to see young Fettesians, who would not ordinarily have access to such an excellent education, flourish here. I am enormously proud that Fettes has been part of my life for nearly 50 years. The fact that there are many more within the Fettes community who continue to engage with and support the College and the Foundation is testament to what a special place Fettes is. Thank you to everyone who has helped the Foundation to achieve its aims over the past two decades.
Bruce A I Dingwall CBE (SH 1973-1978) Chairman of the Fettes Foundation
In 1998 the Fettes Foundation was created to raise philanthropic income towards facilities and bursaries at Fettes. As a result, the College has continued to develop in a very positive direction and the Foundation has shared in this journey. We are indebted to all the Foundation Trustees, staff and the countless donors who have been instrumental in making the Foundation, its purpose and ambitions, a great success. When I joined the staff of Fettes in 1997 the school roll was 500, having recovered from a low of nearer 400. Under Michael Spens’ (Headmaster 1998-2017) leadership the roll grew to 700, building on Malcolm Thyne’s (Headmaster 1988-1998) academic and pastoral legacy and the much-needed development of the College’s infrastructure. Above all, their achievement was to re-build the confidence and ambition of the College. None of that would have been possible without the support of staff, parents, Old Fettesians and friends. The Foundation was crucial to initiating the fundraising and friendraising that facilitated the major early developments that helped to grow that confidence and ambition. It is invidious to cite individual contributions but Barrie Lloyd (Ki 1953-1958) almost single handedly brought the Foundation into being. The rest is history.

The Formation of a Foundation for the Future by Barrie Lloyd (Ki 1953-1958), Foundation Trustee, Former London OFA Secretary, Former OFA Representative on the Board of Governors Fettes, in common with the majority of leading UK independent schools, has no significant wealth from which to renew or create the modern facilities required of a school of its status or, indeed, to provide bursaries. Fee income alone is not sufficient for these purposes and therefore raising philanthropic funds is essential to keep Fettes at the forefront of UK independent schools. Up until the early 1990s independent schools generally mounted ad hoc appeals to raise funds to support specific new development projects. Fettes was no exception, running successful appeals in 1966 in support of a new Dining Hall and, again in 1970, the Centenary Year, to help build the Science Block. The ‘Fettes 2000’ appeal was launched in 1983. It raised £460,000, primarily from Old Fettesians (OFs), which is testament to their loyalty to the school. However the appeal was deemed to be unsuccessful as its goal was to raise £1,000,000. Mounting one off appeals like this became increasingly unpopular with schools because of their short term nature. Some of the methods used tended only to antagonise their alumni to whom the approaches were made and often, those who did give, felt there was a lack of follow up and ongoing engagement between fundraising drives. Schools began to follow the example of universities and, in particular, Oxford and Cambridge Colleges, by setting up their own Foundations. 6
This enabled them to think longer term; develop good relationships with their respective communities and to embark upon raising funds on a continuous basis via capital and annual fundraising campaigns and by promoting legacies. This model emanates from the USA where there is an ingrained duty of alumni, partly because of a long history of charitable giving amongst the various communities, to support their schools and universities. In 1998 Fettes appointed a new Headmaster. At the interview leading to his appointment, Michael Spens (Headmaster, 1998-2017) was asked to speak to the Governors about his “Vision for Fettes”. This included tidying up many areas of the Fettes estate and building a modern sports centre. The Governors had, in fact, long before recognised such a facility was necessary, not only to realise and expand the sporting potential of pupils and the variety of sports on offer, but to match, at least, those of competitor schools. But how was the money to be raised for the execution of such an ambitious project? For some time the Governors had been giving consideration to the creation of a Foundation along the lines of those already set up by a number of English schools and, in September 1998, the Fettes Foundation was launched.
The original thirteen Trustees came from a wide variety of backgrounds in commerce and industry, and the professions. Colin Ross (Gl 1954-1958) generously acted as the first Chairman of the Foundation and managed events with a light touch. Twelve of the original Trustees were OFs and four also were or became Governors. The single non-OF, Tim Morrison, was a past parent and, also, a Governor. In order for the Foundation to be successful in the long term, it was clear we needed to engage the interest of the OF community from the outset. To help with this, Paul Cheetham (Staff 1988-2008) was appointed as the first full time Secretary of the Old Fettesian Association (OFA). Apart from the day to day organisation of and liaison with the OF network, his full-time presence at Fettes meant that OFs had a ready point of contact. Ongoing communication and engagement with OFs, accordingly, improved. The first of the Foundation’s many fundraising initiatives was the sports centre, now known as Westwoods. All of the Trustees were closely involved with the project. Besides making substantial contributions to the cost of the project, they gave valuable advice, help and support to the Governors throughout.
The interaction between the Foundation, the Headmaster, the Bursar and the Governors to bring the project to fruition amounted to a team effort of the highest order. Alastair Salvesen CBE (Mo 1954-1960), an original Trustee and a towering figure in more ways than one, was the Chairman of the Buildings Committee of the Governors which included non-OF Governors, Alan McCreath and Alastair Davidson. All three freely gave of their time to work tirelessly with the Bursar, to deliver Westwoods on budget and on time. The project could not have been undertaken without generous support from the donors who contributed to the Foundation’s first capital campaign, for which the School has been enormously grateful and forever will be. Since then the Foundation has gone from strength to strength. Well over 2000 donors including OFs, parents, staff and other friends of Fettes have contributed to capital projects, annual appeals and the Endowment Fund by making single donations, setting up regular donations and remembering Fettes in their wills. The Trustees of the Fettes Foundation remain deeply grateful for the immense support received.
Westwoods Health Club is a unique dual use facility as it offers private members, Fettes College students and staff access to excellent fitness facilities within a friendly and relaxed environment. We are delighted that we have also recently received a platinum award for our service.

The highlight of 2002 was without a doubt the opening of the Sports Centre. It took courage to embark upon such a project and hard work to bring it to fruition. We have not been disappointed. It is a superb facility.
The Culachy Music School has elevated my level of musical satisfaction at Fettes tenfold. From practising the Steinway in the main auditorium to exploring musical ideas on the midi keyboards and iMacs, it is safe to say the new music school has transformed what is possible for me.

The modern world we are preparing students for is as diverse, as rich and as multifaceted as one could imagine. It can only be of benefit to our community that we educate in such a similarly mixed atmosphere by offering bursaries to young people. Teacher
Bursaries: Taking positive action to transform lives at Fettes College Fettes is committed to transforming lives. We offer bursary awards to ambitious young men and women who would not ordinarily be in a position to benefit from a Fettes education. Increasing philanthropic income towards bursaries is therefore a key priority for the Fettes Foundation. 14
Breaking down barriers We want to break down barriers to ensure the most deserving children have access to a Fettes education. To do this, we are beginning to take a more active approach towards recruiting bursary pupils in need of fully funded places and welcoming them into our inspirational community. In 2018 Fettes’ first pupil recruited via the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, the UK’s biggest boarding school bursary charity, joined our Sixth Form. We are looking forward to welcoming two more SpringBoard pupils in 2019.
Kick-starting our ambitions Our ambitions received a fantastic boost recently when the Fettes Foundation received an anonymous gift of £1.2 million towards Fettes Kick-start, a new programme we have developed to actively recruit two 11 year old children, from low income families in Edinburgh, into First Form at the Prep School each year. This transformative donation will enable us to provide full
bursarial support for these pupils to ‘kick-start’ their Fettes education. We are working closely with six partner Primary Schools in some of the most deprived areas of Edinburgh to identify and recruit our first two Kick-start pupils to join Fettes in September 2019. We firmly believe that these children will benefit greatly from joining Fettes in the fun, caring and
nurturing environment of our Prep School. They will have two years there to acclimatise, make friends and learn new skills, standing them in excellent stead for life in the Senior School. Throughout their time at Fettes, these pupils will develop their talents in a pastoral environment that is second to none and, in time, we hope their experience will give them the confidence and tools to make their dreams come true.
I am delighted that we are able to launch our own initiative to actively recruit some of the most deserving of students from low income families in Edinburgh to Fettes, thanks to this unprecedented level of philanthropic support towards bursaries. I am deeply grateful for this donation and for donations the Foundation has received since then towards this exciting project. I am also indebted to the Head Teachers and staff at our partner schools who have worked closely with us to develop Fettes Kick-start and to select suitable candidates for consideration. Without their warm welcome and commitment to this project we would have been unable to make the significant progress we have done to date. This project is a real step-change for Fettes and everyone involved is looking forward to our first Kick-start pupils joining the Fettes family later this year. Peter Worlledge, Bursar

The Tazaki Foundation
Can you can help the Fettes Foundation transform lives?
We have also welcomed two pupils from Japan to Fettes this year, fully funded by the Tazaki Foundation. This charity actively recruits Japanese boys and girls who will benefit from the opportunity to study in the UK for two years
in Sixth Form, just like its Founder did when he was a boy. We are delighted they have selected Fettes as their Scottish partner and we are looking forward to welcoming two more of their pupils in September 2019.
The Fettes Foundation is constantly striving to increase philanthropic income towards bursaries. We are extremely grateful to all those who have supported and continue to support bursary provision at Fettes and we hope that many more members of the Fettes community will consider following our Founder’s lead by supporting us this year.
Making your gift To make your gift towards bursaries, all you need to do is complete the enclosed Gift Form and return it to us in the envelope provided. You can make a single donation or commit to a regular gift. Either way, please do complete the Gift Aid declaration on the form if applicable. Donations, large or small, will all contribute to making awards which will transform the lives of recipients and their families. They will help us welcome bright, curious and caring young people from low income backgrounds into our diverse community, where all Fettesians have the opportunity to thrive. 16
Foundation Trustees will transfer funds received to the College, where they will be ring-fenced in the College Endowment Fund, known as the Fettes College Combined Investment Fund, and invested in a portfolio of listed equities and bonds. Income from these invested funds will then be applied to the provision of bursaries. I f you would like to discuss making a donation towards the provision of bursaries at Fettes, please contact Nicola Pickavance, Director of Development. t: +44(0)131 311 6960 e: n.pickavance@fettes.com 17
Countdown to Fettes 150 On 5th October 2020, Fettes College will reach its 150th birthday. We are currently planning a range of ways throughout the academic year 2020 2021 for you to participate. A specially commissioned book sits at the heart of our plans. To help tell the Fettes story, this beautiful book will feature archival and personal photos from throughout Fettes’ 150 years. It will be available to pre-order from summer 2019 and will be published in October 2020.
18
The annual calendar of events across the globe for Old Fettesians, parents and the wider Fettes community will continue, alongside additional celebrations, some of which are detailed here:
1
A gala dinner in London.
2
Black-tie events in Edinburgh and Hong Kong.
3
Fettes College Autumn Concert in the Usher Hall. If you would like to join us, pencil in the evening of 26th November 2020.
Opportunities for further events and celebration The 150th year also coincides with the 50th anniversary of girl pupils joining Fettes. This will have its own strand of celebration, including an all-female Fettes panel event, organised through our Career Partnership Programme. As we know, the Fettes story includes sport, music, art and academia at its core. Plans are evolving to incorporate these elements into our year-long celebration, with opportunities for tournaments, exhibitions, reunions and other social gatherings emerging.

Connecting Our Community Fettes College has an energetic and vibrant local and international community of pupils, Old Fettesians, parents, staff and friends. It’s very nostalgic walking the paths around Fettes again; I will never forget the memories made here, some of the very best. I miss the routine and especially the friends (family) we all had in House.

The Old Fettesian Association The Old Fettesian Association (OFA) helps Old Fettesians (OFs) keep in touch with each other, supports an array of gatherings across the globe and produces the Old Fettesian Newsletter, packed full of OF and Fettes news and stories. In 2017-2018 over 1000 OFs attended OFA events and the OF Newsletter was sent to nearly 6000 OFs. Fettes College produces ambitious alumni, many of whom end up being inquisitive global explorers, always ready to offer a friendly welcome and a helping hand to fellow OFs who follow in their footsteps. On the one hand, this should not be surprising; life at boarding school is, after all, one in which a strong supportive community and desire to see one another succeed is nurtured. On the other hand, one must not discount the distinct qualities of Fettesians, including a notable culture of kindness on campus and a desire to give back, which remain with our alumni when they move on. OFs contact me from all over the world asking for help reconnecting with other OFs in their region and to share news for the OF Newsletter. Fettes has its base and heart in Scotland, but our pupil and alumni body are part of a truly global network; no OF can say they didn’t stand shoulder to shoulder with peers from other parts of the world. The friendships and connections made at Fettes are as personally rewarding as they are culturally enriching.
20
The OFA’s dedicated team of global Regional Representatives, who voluntarily represent their region, help bring OFs together world-wide. They also provide local support for OFs moving to, studying in or visiting a particular area. The OFA simply could not deliver all they do without these volunteers. For a list of Regional Representatives, please go to fettescommunity.com/regionalrepresentatives Every year, a large number of OFs return to Fettes to: reconnect with their teachers; show friends and family where they spent their formative years; visit to talk about their careers with current pupils; have a ball over Commemoration Weekend; pay their respects to old friends no longer with us; or simply to stroll around the ever-familiar grounds. Whatever the reason, OFs are always welcomed back warmly on campus. Do contact me to arrange a visit or to share your news for the next edition of the OF Newsletter. Gathering together across the globe Thanks to support from Regional Representatives, in 2017-2018 there were almost 30 OF events held across the world including in Norway, Melbourne, Vancouver and South Africa. In Hong Kong it was marvelous to see more events for OFs than ever, including informal drinks, a New Year celebration on a boat in Victoria Harbour and the first ever OF gathering in Hong Kong for Remembrance at the Cenotaph. The Headmaster, Geoffrey Stanford, made his first visit for Fettes to Hong Kong in March 2018. During this trip he hosted a Drinks Reception at the China Club, which was attended by OFs and current, past and prospective parents. He made a further visit to Hong Kong in November when he hosted a gathering at the 22
Hong Kong Club. Both events were extremely well attended which is testament to the strength of our warm community in the region. We are grateful to Foundation Trustee, Fiona McGregor, and past parent, Stuart Leckie, for all they did to help us secure these lovely venues and run these events. Geoffrey also visited Singapore during his March trip, when he attended an event hosted by parents Iain Lawson and Angela Comer at their home. We are extremely grateful to Iain and Angela for this support. As we look towards the opening of Fettes Guangzhou in September 2020, the depth of positive feeling and desire for the Fettes community in Asia, our largest overseas hub, to stay connected, is wonderful to see.
OFs and parents also had the opportunity to join Geoffrey at a Drinks Reception in Milan in November. We are grateful to current parent, Lili Liu, for providing her restaurant, Huan, as a superb venue for this lively gathering of the Fettes community in the region. Within the UK, OFs gathered at careers and networking events, drinks, lunches and dinners, private gallery views and more in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Linlithgow, St Andrews, Yorkshire, Newcastle, the Midlands, Bristol and London. Recognising the importance of OFs in the fabric of Fettes College’s continuing story, Geoffrey made time to attend a number of these events over the course of his first year as Headmaster and is looking forward to attending more events in the future. In London, which has been a key hub for OF activity for many years, OFs enjoyed an array of events including the popular London Drinks Party and the OFA Carol Service.
London Ceilidh plans are afoot for 30th November 2019, with the hope that this will become a biennial tradition after its tremendous revival in 2017. It is really encouraging when new events appear on the calendar each year and even more encouraging when they are run again the next year, as has recently happened in Tokyo with a lunch gathering there now set to become an annual tradition. If you would like to run an event in your region, please email ofa@fettes.com or call +44 (0)131 311 6741 to get the ball rolling. This project is very much under way and we are looking forward to sharing the final product when the digital archive is ready, which we hope will coincide with Fettes 150th birthday in 2020. We are delighted that this will be of particular benefit to OFs who live too far away to regularly visit the Fettes archives in person. I am delighted to report that the project to digitise the entire back collection of Fettesian magazines and OF Newsletters is progressing well. Some 27,000 pages of text and images have now been professionally scanned, and the process of indexing/bookmarking has begun. We are grateful to the members of our community in the USA for supporting this initiative which will enable us to provide an incredibly detailed and valuable online resource showcasing the life and colourful history of the College.

Independent School of the Year for Student Carers Programme
The Fettes Career Partnership Programme – Six Years On The Fettes Career Partnership Programme began six years ago with the vision to support our alumni and current Fettesians in pursuit of their careers. We began by listening to advice from Old Fettesians and parents across the globe. The resounding thought was to connect the Fettes community to support each other at every age and stage on their career journey, and this is what the Career Partnership Programme has been built upon.
A Busy Year 2017-2018 was an exceptionally busy and successful year for the Career Partnership Programme across all areas. We are grateful to all the OFs, current and past parents who have assisted us to deliver the following events:
1. Expert Panel Event
A gathering of over 100 OFs in London at M&C Saatchi for our first ever expert panel event ‘…the way the world is going…’ with a stellar Fettes panel, chaired by Lizzie Goodburn (née Crichton) (CW 1993-1998).
2. Lifting the Lid events
The integration of real world professional experience into our careers curriculum through informal networking events for pupils and young OFs to ‘lift the lid’ on blended career skill areas.
3. Career insight and skill workshops on ‘Creative Careers’ with Grey Advertising and ‘Property Careers’ with Savills Edinburgh.
We are delighted to have won the Independent School of the Year award for Student Careers Programme. We are immensely proud of our Fettes community who, with such strong support, have made this possible. Please do watch our ‘Fettes College, a life-long partnership’ video by going to https://vimeo.com/305458940 The real-world support that we receive from parents and OFs really starts to bring career opportunities to life. Our students develop early networking skills with professionals from the Fettes community, asking their own questions and receiving genuine insight and advice. This support continues as they leave us to begin their own career journey beyond Fettes.

4. CV Sessions Parents and OFs in HR and Communications delivered a very valuable insight into CVs for Lower Sixth pupils.
7. Business Networking for the Upper Sixth with OFs and Parents at Skycanner HQ in Edinburgh.
5. Careers Week A strong focus on the real world of work and life’s career journey was provided by OFs and parents who inspired pupils in Chapel, supported insight lunches and lessons.
8. Oxbridge interview insight sessions
Parents, OFs and Fettes Staff met with Oxbridge candidates from Fettes and other Edinburgh Secondary Schools to prepare them for Oxbridge interviews.
9. Apprenticeships/Internships We had a good response to our call for contacts in firms who offer the increasingly popular Graduate Apprenticeship route. Several took stands at the Higher Education Fair, held here at Fettes at Careers Day. We are always interested to hear of more, so do get in touch using the details below.
6. Careers Day The Lower Sixth, together with their parents and 120 pupils from Edinburgh Secondary Schools received enormous benefit from parent and OF speakers and those who joined our ‘meet the experts’ room. The also had access to 45 Universities, Gap and Graduate Apprenticeship organisations who spent the day with us.
This has helped me to keep my mind open about the types of careers out in the world.

Message from the Director of Development It is inspiring to reflect on all that has been achieved by the Fettes Foundation in just 20 years. In the relatively short time that I have been Director of Development, I have had the pleasure of getting to know many committed donors and Trustees and working with dedicated colleagues, all of whom make the delivery of the Foundation’s priorities possible. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone involved. In 2017-18 the Foundation sought donations towards bursaries, the Pavilion Restoration Project and to digitise the Fettes archives, as well as towards the unrestricted fund. I am grateful to everyone who made a donation to these and other projects and I am delighted that each year members of our community choose to become donors for the first time. The Foundation also received generous legacies from those who have kindly remembered Fettes in their wills. This type of support has a great impact and helps us achieve our aims and vision for the future. For further information about leaving a legacy please take a look at pages 40 and 41. 2018-19 has been a very busy and productive year so far. I am delighted that our ambitions to actively recruit the most deserving of bursary students to Fettes are becoming a reality thanks to recent significant support to launch Fettes Kick-start. I am indebted to everyone who 30
has been involved in developing and now delivering these transformational plans. We are also focusing on raising the final sums required to restore our much-loved Pavilion. The newly refurbished and upgraded Pavilion will remain the motivational, historical and nostalgic building it has always been, but it will be improved and advanced to provide Fettesians with a place to gather to discuss team performance and tactics and to host visiting teams and their supporters. I am so thankful for the support we have received towards the Pavilion so far. I hope that over the coming weeks others will help us reach our goal to ensure we keep on track to deliver this project in our 150th year, 2020-21. Please do contact me if you would like to discuss making a donation towards the project. I know many of you reading this brochure will choose to support the Foundation this year and I am deeply grateful to you all. Each and every gift the Foundation receives makes a genuine difference to Fettes and is greatly appreciated by the pupils who benefit.

So many of my opportunities have originated from the skills I learnt at Fettes. I am happy to be able to give something back to the College to help others take advantage of these same opportunities.
Sports Fundraising Dinner 2019 On 25th January, 200 parents and their friends came together at Fettes for a Sports Dinner to raise funds for the forthcoming Girls’ Lacrosse Tour to Canada and the Pavilion Restoration Project. We are very grateful to everyone who attended.
As well as a secret, silent and live auction packed full of incredible prizes, there was a fantastic raffle too. Thanks to the many parents and friends who donated prizes, bid on the auctions and bought raffle tickets, we raised over £61,000.
Special thanks go to this year’s dinner committee of Claire Cochrane, Sherril Dixon, Victoria Erasmus, Frances Harris, Annabel Mackie and Sharon Nimmo and to our auctioneer Iain Gale.

A Life Remembered: The Impact of Legacies Sir William Fettes passion for education and its transformative effects has continued to inspire and guide us. Remembering Fettes in your will gives the College the opportunity to develop and progress with confidence. Legacy gifts support Fettes purpose to develop, nurture and encourage our pupils in an environment of academic and extra-curricular excellence.
Jacek Makowski (SH 1944-1948) Foundation Scholar and planned legator
He has therefore made the decision that, after his family and close friends have been cared for, he wants to give something back to Fettes in return for all that it gave him. You can read more about Jacek’s fascinating story in our legacy brochure, which you can view online by following this link: http://fettescommunity.com/legacies Alternatively, please email development@fettes.com if you would like us to send you copy. 40
My gift will support pupils whose parents cannot afford to send them to Fettes, to give them the opportunity of a wonderful education and to build longlasting friendships like I have enjoyed. To get them started in life and onto the right path.
Jacek Makowski
Nicola Pickavance
When Claudia Wellwood, Development Co-ordinator at Fettes, met with Jacek to talk to him about what is motivating him to leave Fettes a legacy, he made it very clear that it was primarily because Fettes played a key role in transforming his life. Not only did the confidence, skills and experience Jacek gained at Fettes help him achieve his ambitions but the friends and connections he made proved invaluable to him in his early career.
Legacy gifts have been transformational for Fettes in many ways over the years. They have provided support for a number of areas and projects which have left a lasting impact on the experiences of Fettesians. Leaving a gift in your will is a simple, tax efficient way to recognise the role that Fettes College played in your life.
Fettes was pivotal in my life and, being a Foundation Scholar, my four years at Fettes were paid for. I received a superb education which enabled me to go straight into the second year Chemical Engineering course at the University of Birmingham in 1948.
Jacek Makowski
Director of Development
How to leave a gift in your will: 1. State in your will you would like to leave a gift to the Fettes Foundation (Charity No. SC028350). Your solicitor will be able to guide you on this. 2. Include our details: The Fettes Foundation, Fettes College, Carrington Road, Edinburgh, EH4 1QX. A practical motivation for many who choose to leave a legacy to Fettes is to avoid the inevitable Inheritance Tax. In the UK, it is possible to reduce the rate of Inheritance Tax you pay from 40% to 36% on some assets if you leave 10% or more of your net estate to a registered charity in your will.
Please call or email Nicola Pickavance, Director of Development, if you have any questions: t: +44 (0)131 311 6960 e: n.pickavance@fettes.com Should you like to let us know of your intentions, please do get in touch. We would love the opportunity to thank you, invite you to our events and to keep you abreast of our news and projects. 41

We are incredibly grateful to all Trustees for their hard work and dedication to the Fettes Foundation. Over the last 20 years the Foundation has benefitted from the counsel of many Trustees, all with a close connection to Fettes. Each of them has provided expertise, guidance and support to help the Fettes Foundation grow. In December 2018, we were sad to see Tim Morrison retire from his position as Foundation Trustee. Tim has had a longstanding relationship with Fettes College as a parent and former Governor and his loyal service and tremendous support over the years has been sincerely appreciated. In January 2019 we also said goodbye to Trustee Julie Aird. Julie is a current and past parent who has been a staunch advocate of the Foundation’s aims and achievements over the years. Her advice and encouragement will be sorely missed.

Data Protection Data Protection law went through huge change in the UK in 2018, with the introduction of a new EU law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May. The School put in a lot of work to prepare for these new regulations. Our work did not stop in May and we continue to implement new policies and staff training to ensure that we can look after the data we store as best as we can. As part of our preparations, we reviewed how we contact our community in relation to fundraising and developed a new Privacy Statement which is available here: https://fettescommunity.com/#developmentteamprivacystatement We will continue to communicate with the Fettes community in the ways we have done in the past. Please let us know if you would like to opt out of receiving communications from us like this brochure, or if you would like to change your contact preferences by emailing development@fettes.com or calling +44(0)131 241 1003.
