The Continuing Professional Education - Far Eastern University Nursing Alumni Foundation (CPE-FEUNAF) held its first seminar in 2010, last September 1, 2010 at the MiniAuditorium, Technology Building. Entitled “Critical Care Nursing Series: Intensive Coronary Care Nursing”, this program was parallel with FEUNAF’s strategic imperatives to continue its commitment to the profession, academe, and community. “The objective of this seminar is to provide an avenue for nurses, alumni particularly, to continue their personal growth so that they may be able to serve more effectively and competently”, said Mr. Michael Jimenez, FEUNAF President. Likewise, this eight-hour seminar was intended for the participants to understand, appreciate, and develop beginning competency in electrocardiogram (ECG) reading and interpretation, to utilize this as a tool in the care of clients with conduction abnormalities, and to understand and develop appreciation of the care of the critically-ill cardiac patients. This also aimed to amplify the nurses’ skills to properly intervene and respond promptly in cardiac life-threatening conditions. Mr. Terrence Ranjo, adviser of the Institute of Nursing Student Council (INSC), was the first to lecture, discussing about the Anatomy and Physiology of the conduction system, The second speaker, Dr. Rusty Francisco, President of NCCLEX, delivered his lecture on ‘Basic ECG Interpretation’ and ‘Recognizing Arrythmia’. He flashed sample ECG strips on his power point presentation to test their abilities and make the learning more interactive. From time to time, he also shared his experiences from abroad. On the other hand, Dr. Annabelle Borromeo, former FEUIN Dean, and now the Vice President for Nursing at St. Luke’s Medical Center (QC and Global) presented the ‘Latest Trends in Cardiac Treatment and Nursing Care of Critically Ill Cardiac Patients’. She also spoke about her life’s mission, which was to value, to find value, and to add value to Filipino nurses anywhere. SC and BG Presidents unveil Batch Goal for Batch 2011 By Kersteen B. Flores

Far Eastern University Institute of Nursing (FEU-IN) seniors from Batch 2011 were inching towards the end of their BS Nursing course and the beginning of their professional voyage. Headed by the Institute of Nursing Student Council (INSC) President, Mr. Ian Jonathan Tiotangco and Batch Government 2011 President, Ms. Hyacinth Luansing, the two helped in preparing the seniors for the coming graduation and Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) through a presentation of Batch Goals. Goals The question in the minds of every senior nursing student today might include, “What awaits for Batch 2011?” Ms. Luansing specified, “Everyone wants to pass the NLE, there’s no harm in trying and dreaming to see ourselves to be registered nurses.” According to her, the batch 2011 will have a goal of 2-01-1, foreseeing the:

2,036 FEU-IN Level IV Students will have 0 failing grade with 100 % passing rate and FEU will be the top 1 nursing school in the Philippines

On the other hand, Mr. Tiotangco stated, “For the batch 2011, of course, we’re aiming for a great number of board passers, we may not be perfect, but we’re hoping for just a very little error, and we would like to encourage all students to always make a room for improvement. An additional goal for us is to utilize

FEUNAF extends care through Community Outreach Program

The annual Community Outreach Program of the Far Eastern University Nursing Alumni Foundation (FEUNAF) was held last October 24, 2010 at Hospicio de San Jose in Ayala Bridge, Manila, catering about 45 children who were 2 to 14 years old. Its theme of ‘FEUNAF Cares’ was built around the concept of not merely distributing goods to a charitable institution but also in making the most of the opportunity to endow the targeted pre-schoolers, schoolers, and adolescents with health education through entertainment and interactive session using the FEUNAF’s very own resources and manpower. Furthermore, the talents of FEU graduates were showcased through the performance of a skit while educating and entertaining the audience. The lead roles of “Super K” and the young girl protagonist were taken by Mr. Aldrin L. Reyes and Ms. Karen Joy A. Poblete, respectively. The rest of the alumni group who contributed to the fulfillment of the event were Mr. Chris Ariel P. Barsatan, Ms. Lorraine C. Bernardo, Mr. Ernesto S. Habacon, Mr. Edsel M. Lupena, Ms. Sheena Marie M. Macasing, Ms. Cassandra Ms. Joy A. Matienzo, Ms. Analyn D. Ortanez, Ms. Lou Khristine D. Racca, Ms.

Paraphernalia kits named “Kit ng Kalinisan” were given to the beneficiaries containing essential toiletries. Mr. Ronnel L. David, from the Social Action Committee of FEUNAF and the proponent of the said activity, reiterated the accommodation of institutions within the community as something to be prioritized since there is no need to get farther if your community, itself, has people who were in need of help. In addition, Mr. David, on doing outreach programs, said, “It’s not about the amount [of the project] but the efforts you gave for it.”

There are even a lot of studies that showed the benefits of nursing audit or the e-learning among students, so it’s actually an advantage for us to have such program. Unlike the batch 2009 that made use of the victometer, our main focus this time will be the nursing audit itself,” Mr. Tiotangco said. E-learning was defined by the web as a form of electronically supported learning and teaching. E-learning was basically the computer and network-enabled transfer of knowledge and skills, in a worldwide aspect. “What’s

After all, positive outweighs the negative,” Mr. Tiotangco further stated. Additionally, Ms. Luansing, in behalf of the Batch Government, enumerated guidelines on achieving the batch goals,

“First, set your mind with these goals, or with your own goal, one tip is to be firm enough in setting it. Second, be committed in what you are doing, if you are still hesitant with your chosen career, feel free to weigh things out, if you feel that you’re still not ready for it, plot your goals, and if things catch up, then pursue it. Third, by simply attending and complying in every lectures and related learning experiences with a HEART, this is our chosen profession, if we accept it whole heartedly, all the necessary concepts will just be simple for us to retain. Fourth, READ, READ, READ. Let us not just rely on the strategies given by the review centers, we must also be equipped enough with the basics of each concepts. The FEU-IN community had equipped us the knowledge, skills and attitude that we need in preparation for the NLE. Fifth, FOCUS and PRAY. We have more or less three months before the NLE, we have to feed our physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual aspects equally for us to attain our optimum level of functioning until our most awaited moment of the exam.” Motivation Among any other things, self-motivation was one of the best weapons that all students can utilize to achieve goals. “Self-motivation is an intrinsic factor, and it is a lot stronger than the extrinsic factors. Meeting Miss-Management Management is a practice that has to combine a good deal of craft, namely experience, with a certain amount of art, as vision and insight, and some science, particularly in the form of analysis and technique. –Henry Mintzberg Although we students are not fully aware of the management process inside the offices of our Institute, we are attentive enough to know that their work can directly affect us. Provided our basic understanding of leadership and management, a concept fully covered in NCM 104, we can sensibly observe some drawbacks in the real setting. One can see the difference between the learned and the exemplified ― what’s being taught and being practiced. As most lecturers or books would start which is necessary to reiterate, they’ll tell you this introductory statement: “Nurses perform the role of leader and manager. Strictly speaking, the two roles differ in their definitions. Leaders make the right things while managers would make things right. Leaders are this and that; managers would do this and that…..” But in the lightest sense they are closely related since leaders often manage a group and managers should possess leadership traits. Pondering on this topic, let’s acknowledge this function of management ― staffing and/or scheduling. Managers are supposed to develop and disseminate fair scheduling policies. That is, being unbiased when issuing the area and time of duty among his/her span of management. Consider a number of factors before apportioning the students and clinical instructors to their respective class or RLE assignment. In addition to that, posting of schedules on time or rather weeks before is equally significant so as not to cause any stress or conflict. Doing so would disturb the level of functioning or confuse the pattern one has been accustomed to. Likewise, delayed scheduling can only mean inflexibility, procrastination or lack of time management. It can also reflect one’s leadership role, one’s philosophy of management and implementation of one’s responsibility. A good management conserves time and energy; lack of which leads to management by crisis. Preventing crisis can only be achieved if there is an effective management. And how is being effective possible? If one can foresee the crisis, then acting on it immediately can seal the crack before a real damage takes place. To be an effective manager, one also needs to think critically, communicate clearly, handle resources effectively and efficiently, augment students and faculty performance, deal with conflict, outline the time, and incite a change.

If only all people in any position of power will all be leaders, not just by name or right, but by heart, then there won’t be another day that I’d feel so fed up of the ominous politics, explicitly, school politics. If you feel that you are not just an officer but a leader or a leader even if you are not an officer, or basically you know deep down your core that you are one, be my guest. Reality is on my side when I say that we cannot equate an officer with a leader. True enough, a person’s position in a certain organization doesn’t automatically make him a leader. But today, reality bites, we use the words ‘officer’ and ‘leader’ interchangeably and it doesn’t get any better than that. While many people in the so called ‘power’ would often look down on you on the elevator or stairwell and boss you around to get things done for them, you see some who encourages you to get something done with them. Though to be very honest, today, amidst all of us, they do not come

around that often. I can hardly put my finger into thinking whether people would agree with this, but I greatly think and feel that leaders – the real ones – shouldn’t always be in front or at the top of everything while everybody else is working for or under him. Yes, a leader creates, a leader formulates, and a leader shows the way. When you are a leader, would you want it to stop there? You set people in motion but you refuse to move another finger because you feel that your work is done? That is not an ideal picture, well, at least for me. A leader is someone who reassures that nobody gets left behind, that each and everyone is not just there for you or because of you, but with you. I would know that someone is a leader, the right kind of one, when he creates and leads the way, but doesn’t walk past everybody else or walk past over someone else’s toe. A leader is a leader, the right kind for me, if instead of creating more followers of him; he creates more leaders like himself.

Iba pa rin ang nakasanayan na. It has been the lines that has been used and abused by different political leaders and brands to most likely prove that once it has been tried and tested, it cannot just be changed in a mere blink of an eye. Teaching per se is involved in this scenario. Learning is the utmost goal of every educational institution across the globe. And since, every person has its unique way of learning; we cannot deny the idea that educators should employ different ways to satisfy the thirsts of every learning needs of a student. Various methods of teaching have been conducted and some of which have been enrolled in the system of our dear alma mater. Professors and clinical instructors as well have been teaching via the VINES Laboratory. This method allows the student to situate himself in an ‘almost real life’ situation by having a dummy serve as his patient while he does his different clinical procedures to aid him with his skill acquisition. Also, the most popular of all the methods of teaching students is the institution of the nursing online or most popularly called as the eLearning. This method allows the student to sit in front of a computer for

several hours a day, answer different questions and understand whatever it is that has been flashed on the computer screen. Yes, it is modern and we cannot deny the fact that it allows the student to work with his lessons independently and test his memory and his capability to facilitate understanding within himself. So what is THE problem according to the IN student population on why loads of pessimistic ideas have been engulfing the eLearning system? Let’s try to scrutinize these ideas from my fellow IN students. Argument #1: rampant cheating is on the loose. Well yes, humans are prone to make mistakes. And with the fact that learning from videos and reading materials flashed on the screen is very much different from a professor teaching you how to do this and that plus the idea of no one is looking around but your Id, Ego and Superego alone, yes, humans will be prone to make mistakes. Argument #2: after completing the individualized modules of the different learning aspects of nursing, you are to repeat it, all over again. I hate to say this, but, is this supposed to be a trial and error method until we are to

It is not furtive to say that at this crucial point in our college life, many among us are worried or self-assured of what goes in our curriculum vitae – worried because some seem to not be contented with their long lists of blahs and/or self-assured because they felt that with these long list they can win any job in the future. I hope that is not just your reason for being what and who you are as a so called student leader. I hope that being where you are now is not just for repute. If you are in a position of some sort, I hope it will get to you that it wouldn’t twinge you so much to pay a little respect to your subordinates. Would it be hard to say ‘please’, or ‘sorry’, or ‘thank you’ to those very people who gave you every reason to be where you are now? I’ve been told that some live for their name, for their so called reputation when in college. I don’t see anything wrong with that. But for me, instead of just living for something, I’d choose to die for it. Living for all these grandeur and people that comes in a package alongside your heading is good, but credibility is to die for.* If by any chance you raised your eyebrow or reacted unenthusiastically on this one, there’s just one word for you. Care to guess what that is? Send it along with your academic, courteous arguments at nin.aguila@yahoo.com press the right button? Argument #3: board exam is indeed a VERY SERIOUS MATTER. Licensure of the students, passing rates of the school and quality of education will be at stake with just a single board exam result. And with that, we cannot argue to the idea that eLearning alone will not suffice the vast topics that each graduating nursing student has to understand in preparation for the board exam. As a student, I can say that if eLearning ‘alone’ will be the preparation for the board exams, perhaps I need to equip myself with a critical review for I feel that I will be starting from the alpha again. I really do not condemn eLearning. There isn’t anything bad with the system. The real PROBLEM is, one method of learning is inadequate to fulfill the learning needs of a nursing student especially when it is the preparation for the board exams that we are talking about. If the students are not taking it seriously, then the administration should find an alternative way on teaching the students that will deem to be effective. If we care about the school’s passing rate, then we should totally care about a student’s whereabouts regarding their learning styles and needs. Despite the dynamics of the modern educational era, I still salute the good ol teacher writing with a piece of chalk in a black board for I believe that no computer, laptop or even a hologram screen can effectively deliver learning to a student than a professor who is standing right in front of you. ************************************* Before I get to leave this institution, I might as well ask in behalf of all those who have not received their continue to p. 5

Grade Conscious Train of Thought Julia Anne M. Gelera “Students are, more often than not, motivated by grades. But what if you’re not a student anymore? The motivation to learn will be lost, and in that case you will cease to learn. And when you cease to learn, you cease to live.” ─ Richson A. Chy, former FEU-IN faculty Students have different conceptions of being grade “conscious” (GC). While to some it may be as simple as being curious about your grade, for me it is using your grades to technically measure your knowledge and skills but not entirely your intellect. Some may attach negative connotations to this behavior such as greediness, selfishness, and crab mentality, and some may say it connotes competence, being goaloriented, and having an overall hunger for achieving. To make a clearer distinction of these, I classified four types of grade conscious students. GC No. 1. These students are always on top. They excel in every quiz, recitation, and exam.

While intelligence might be innate, excellence still needs to be worked on to be achieved. Accompanied by diligence and sometimes a little luck, they get high scores and retain their spot. GC No. 2. With their eagerness to obtain a high score, these students would do everything in the name of a holy grade. The essence of learning becomes a blur because grade is more important. GC No. 3. In critical times, students are unconsciously becoming GC because they don’t want to fail. A grade of 1.00 might not be their goal but surely a 5.00 would be a slap on their face. An acceptable grade is enough for as long as they stay in school. GC No. 4. Unhealthy competition is the only way to get their desired grade. Crab mentality, that is. If you get ahead of them, they’ll try to kick you out so they would reign. Their tactics include some of these: comparing test papers or scores to make sure they are not surpassed, not sharing what they learned, or deceiving you with wrong information.

Unsafe Media Wineskin

Imagine oneself in the tender years of one or two, filled with blissful ignorance and sheer chastity. That’s quite unimaginable, right? For the human mind during infancy is not yet capable of registering vivid memories of such nature. And undeniable, it is, that our once ‘blank slate’ is currently bombarded with pressures, anxieties, piles of workloads, and endless decisionmaking that clearing those thoughts away to imagine our ‘long-gone’ chaste-self is next to impossible. But try to look upon the life of any young child with years ahead of exposures, overlooking the chances of a premature death. Or as student nurses who witness normal spontaneous deliveries, we get to see neonates with the most fragile mind and body. We were as innocent as them, once upon a time, if not for the unwarranted input of knowledge in each second of existence driven by a multitude of factors and influences. One of such influences is the big role of the media in a person’s lifestyle. We watch TV shows; we watch movies. We see commercials onscreen, in flyers, up on the billboards or on anything else. We read journals,

magazines, newspapers (you’re reading one), and even anyone else’s posts and comments on FB or Twitter. On air, we also hear news, music and a DJ’s blabber. We perceive such and a thousand others. But there’s no buffer to what we’re seeing or hearing. The diminutive ‘Parental Guidance’ in the right lower corner of the TV screen is not taken seriously nor do the government warning which tells that ‘Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health,’ and the ‘Drink moderately’ segment after every liquor commercial. I can see one great reason why people are readily influenced by things without pondering their harms or benefits. And that would be the ‘wrong authority’ that a person has over his or her life and decisions. Not everyone would realize such authorities but, really, those are everpresent. Now, what is an authority anyway? Merriam-Webster says that it is the power to influence thought or behavior; it is a convincing force. These authorities are usually your ‘friends’ of which loyalty to ‘their’ trend dictates one’s belongingness. Or these can be the pleasures you’ll

me arrived at the not-so-hot-topic issue in the Institute of Nursing – Nursing On Line (NOL). You may be asking why now when it’s done already? It’s because it left a fume that remains as mind boggling as it was then. Curious, I asked some people in the IN community regarding their comments eLearning: Ian Tiotangco, INSC President stated, “Nakikinig ako kasi may natututunan ako, especially sa board exam type questions. Kaso not all information I’ve heard/read ay

If you try to assess yourself, you may find that you fall under 2 or 3 more of these types. But the point is that you be aware of your behavior in the academe in terms of grading. For an in-depth interpretation, there may be reason why you behave like this or why you are that kind of GC. A family of achievers is likely to raise their children in a way that would help them succeed. Your parents either want you to have the same achievement they have or don’t want you to commit the same mistakes they had before. They would try to push your limitations and expect you to come home with a trophy in hand. Or at least give you words of wisdom on studying hard. Friends may also influence your studying habits and styles. If your friends are GC, consciously or unconsciously you’ll become GC too. Not unless you have a strong stand of what you are. Maintaining your status in school is also one factor why being GC is necessary. Professors and batchmates have a high regard and belief in your capabilities and you wouldn’t want for that to go to the dogs. Above all this, personal satisfaction is still the core factor. You cannot deny that you feel great or happy when you achieve something. And there’s nothing wrong with it if you deserve it. Just don’t get attached too much in these indulgences. I surmise that all students are GC. have to fulfill for your vain and selfishself. An authority can also be in the form of the man or woman meant for you, or so you desperately thought. Though some people have the knowledge of the detrimental effects of untoward things that the media may imply, such as vices, they would not care about them for they don’t recognize those authorities that lead them to risks. I have learned that life is not all about your friends, not even your family, not that girl or guy who allegedly stole your heart, and especially not about yourself. Not that those are insignificant, but there has always been the question of the right hierarchy of priorities. We know who is supposed to be our very authority. Sadly, He’s ever taken for granted. The norms and standards set by the media dictates which is in and which is out, which is cool and which is not. If a certain fad is displayed by a favorite celebrity, most wouldn’t think twice as to its approval. Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:12 said that, “Everything is permissible for me—but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me—but I will not be mastered by anything.” Likewise, we are challenged to be on guard of whatever we are ‘feeding’ ourselves by being in line with the authority who is final and eternal and whose very Word is written in the Scriptures. Kung gusto, maraming paraan, kung ayaw, maraming dahilan. Students should follow their assigned schedules. Ako kasi I’m a busy person, minsan nga hahatiin ko pa ang time ko sa e-Learning para sa school activities. Nasa attitude talaga ‘yan ng students, it’s all about individual preference,

You just have to know what kind you are. There are good and bad sides of being a GC. Good if you just do your part by studying hard and leave it to the professor to evaluate your academic performance, nothing more. After all, it’s just a number that reflects how much you learn, not how you value learning. Bad, if you use it as the only motivating factor to excel in everything you do. As conveyed by Dr. Glenda S. Arquiza in the September-October 2010 issue of the FEU Advocate, we students should be self-motivated because self-motivation is stronger. February 21, 2011 I am writing to you this letter to express how I felt and share the lessons I’ve learned in my one year term as the Vice President of the Institute of Nursing Student Council 2010-2011, but before I get into that, let me first tell to you how I was sworn into office. Before, I was just like anybody else, wandering around the corridors of the Nursing Building looking for a difference, seeking for improvement. I was a mayor then, and as an officer, there were so many meetings I’ve attended, organized by student leaders, which were also the same reasons why I’ve hated student leaders for three years of my college life. Imagine, for three years, I’m a nursing student full of apathy. That’s until the time when I’ve actually met and known several of them. I completely understood them. Everything changed starting that day. My quest towards being an INSC officer began when I got acquainted with these people. These individuals are the same persons I am referring now as my family in the INSC. If not for these people, I wouldn’t be where I am right now, stressed and ugly, yet rewarded and very happy. Being a council doesn’t make you greater than anybody else. Actually, it makes you below them, because you have to be their servant, in the name of servant leadership. That’s just one of the many lessons I’ve learned as an officer. It had been exactly 300 days today since we have taken our oath of office. I keep on asking myself ‘From those 300 days, what have I contributed to our beloved Institute?’ Are my implemented projects enough?’ Well, yes the projects may be important, but for me, more than those are the people I have inspired, influenced and helped. This, I think is the most rewarding achievement an officer could attain while he is in office. Now, I would like to cite one of my favorite quotations, ‘The best leaders train leaders while they are leading.’ That would be my challenge to the newly elected INSC officers. Train as many willing leaders as you could while you are in office. The time that you still have to serve our beloved Institute of Nursing makes me so envious with all of you, that is why my advice to you is to make the most out of your term. If I will be given another chance to redo things I’ve done as an officer, I will never do it differently, instead I will just train more willing leaders, and inspire more students. For my dearest nursing students, I would like to impart you this however cliché as they may sound for some. There are two characteristics of a wind. First, is that it is invisible, and second, it is unnoticeable. Now I would like ask, do you want that in the four years that you will be staying in our institute, you will forever remain invisible? Do you want to go unnoticed as you graduate from our institute and be forgotten? ’Don’t be a wind, start investing right now, it is never too late for you. All you have to do is visit our Bahay at NB 510. That is where the legacy happens.

Edward R. BravoVice President, INSC 2011

motivation, and priorities.” Tiotangco furthered. Second comment, moreover, comes from a senior faculty who witnessed NOL since it started. “It’s technologically assisted especially in the embrace of effective, affective, psychomotor because it’s a virtual experience to the students.” It’s amendable; NOL has no feelings and students nowadays learn more when they are hit in their emotions.” [And for the students], they have to accept – and suffer after going through the process of NOL. They should take in what they learned from NOL and should learn to embrace everything they had out of it.” “I think NOL is a very nice program. Topics that aren’t tackled in the lectures or aren’t emphasized can be studied by students at their own pace. However, it would be nice if we could access it at home, then the post quizzes or exam would be taken at school, of course. [Also], handouts would be very helpful since taking down notes would be very impossible [for us] to finish the modules,” Klemens Yu, BSN 140 said. And when asked whether it’s effective or not, he quipped, “From a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being highest, I give it a 6.8. It did add up to my knowledge, but it was too timepressured set up and before you can digest what you learned, you need to go to next module already. It’s effective but definitely not for all. There should be a survey regarding this,” he added with a smile. In my opinion, it is amendable. Adjustments need to be

made. With this kind of system, you can learn a lot only if you are given enough time,” Yu ended. ***** Now question so remained. How effective eLearning was? For the past weeks prior to meeting the deadline of the said learning program, it’s been inevitable to see students swarmed in the halls of Nursing building, all desperate to sit in. But did everyone learn as much as they read/heard? Truth be told, eLearning is a good supplemental source of knowledge, but would it equate to reliable and effective learning? True, students may have failed to do their tasks in the course of NOL, they may have taken it for granted, and didn’t spend much time to dwell on lessons being discussed. But with time constraints, schedule conflicts, eye straining lesson, too-ideal-setup-that-it-is-not-so-suitable-in-ours – would that add to fruitful education? Just how our dear Professor said about students’ way of learning – students learn when they get hit in their emotions. It’s the very reason why students upon having attended a seminar would easily choose a review center which had conducted a funny yet productive teaching rather than the opposite. I believe our very own professors outweigh all the mentors in the videos combined. ☺ If only surveys were done, if only voices were heard, if only appropriate actions were executed. True, to be a good listener is a thumbs up, but to be able to listen and comprehend is a gift. Go figure. What’s on your mind? Spill it to: elaine_vil0ria@yahoo.com

What you are as a student nurse now can be who you are as a professional nurse

Attitudes are usually termed as contagious, are yours worthy of transmission? The three deep-rooted means in effective patient care is indisputably a mastery for Tamaraw nurses: the knowledge, the skills, and the attitude. Students often give much emphasis on the knowledge and skills, that the third one is habitually deserted. Florence Nightingale, the Mother of Modern Nursing, did not actually focus on knowledge and skills, rather, on good attitude. To all the seniors, are you in adequate assertion to affirm that your attitude can bestow astonishing colors in the art of professional nursing? And, to the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen: are you willing enough to give up your juvenile attitudes such as coming to school late, attending your classes unwary, and wearing your school uniform unbecomingly; and eventually, bring out the best ones to help your nursing life grow healthy? Wake up. “Para sa mga lower years, sana maisip nila na kaming mga seniors ay sobrang naghirap bago makamit ng bawat isa ang nameplate at IN patch, pero sila meron agad pero nakakalungkot kasi mali-mali naman yung uniform nila. I’m saying na sana hindi lang sa academics mag-focus, but holistically, kasama na yung knowledge, skills, and proper attitude, para maging successful. And the key to have a proper attitude is a proper discipline. Mostly, lower years ang violators, pero sana makapag-adjust na din sila,” Mr. Bryan Catacutan, the Discipline Committee (DC) president said. The Institute of Nursing (IN) has brought the DC to serve as the guide for instilling discipline and positive attitude in the IN community, specifically, on the aspect of proper grooming. But one question remains: Is the strategy effective enough? Some are in favor of the rules and regulations imposed, while some

challenged the absence of justifications. “We have revised some of the rules and regulations, masasabi ko na mas maluwag ang DC ngayon kumpara sa dati. Some would say na masyado kaming mahigpit at inconsiderate, the justifications are more of common sense din naman kasi. Well, yung ibang Institutes nagugulat sila sa IN kasi may ganitong klase ng disiplina sa atin. We are not perfect, we are also students, sometimes ang mga members ng DC nagkaka-violation din, kahit kaming mga officers. But the Discipline Committee is a role model as a whole, hindi lang siya manpower, at hindi lang tuwing enrollment active. Isa din kasi sa mga criteria namin ay good performance sa academics,” Mr. Catacutan added. Discipline includes the way you speak, the way you present yourself, the way you rationalize, the way you manage your problems, the way you mingle with other people, and even the way you dress. Tamaraw nurses are known to have an ideal and almost faultless grooming and discipline. Everything is being done cautiously; from the very single strand of hair down to the unpolluted spotless pair of shoes. But are all these things reasonable? Fashion in the runway is totally different from the fashion of nursing. In nursing, white stuff are considered an inborn extension of the human body. It begins from the head, where one should wear a firm cap with the hair neatly pulled up into a bun for females, and a 2 x 3 haircut for males; then, to the ears where a stunning pair of earrings shouldn’t be present; down to the body, where one should wear white undergarments including the white chemise for women before wearing a bright well-ironed uniform; then down to the legs, where females should wear a tight tidy stockings, while males should wear a mid-leg high hygienic socks; and finally, down to the shoes where only pure whiteness must be seen. Black is black: the new line imposed by the DC, the line that gave way to numerous criticisms and squabbles. Many students might ask, “What if my hair is naturally dark brown? Should I color my virgin hair black? Then, in that case, wouldn’t it be considered as the real violation because I will undergo hair coloring treatment? What if it will fail as well?” It might be pressing, but the fact that not all Filipinos are born with pure black hair cannot be neglected. Some rules are still considered as an enigma: vague and bewildering. “Para sa may mga lahi, i-co-consider namin ang colored hair. Pangit din kasing tingnan ang colored hair kahit na konti o marami pa yan. But then, we have thought of it all over again. Kinausap na rin kami ng INSC regarding this, kaya isa ito sa mga concerns na i-re-raise namin kapag nakapag-meeting na kami with the faculty,” Mr. Catacutan said. Self-discipline is the keystone for an upright attitude. You are witty. You are the finest student in your class. You are an officer. You are a leader. You are the unsurpassed athlete in the institute. You are famous. You are well-heeled. You are handsome. You are beautiful. But, are you worth catching? Sometimes, what makes a person’s face glow is not what the naked eyes can see. You may have crooked lips, undersized eyes, or even a lop-sided nose; but if behind these imperfections is a pure mind with a good attitude, then, your face will still stand out among them all. What initiates a good attitude is an innate character, which definitely emphasizes the intrinsic factor. If one strives to aim for good attitude; then, one should start from within, take a step forward, and make oneself welldisciplined. Remember that when struggling for a goal, a key to its achievement is self-discipline. In this fast-changing world, everything seems to be instant. Are you hungry? Go get that instant food. Are you bored? Go get that instant entertainment. Are you in a hurry? Go get that instant ride. Name it. Everything is served in an instant. But, one thing remains to be hard to get – good attitude. No one is

a magician to earn it in an instant; it must be a habit that one

should always exercise. You are working so hard today that you fail to develop a good attitude, then at the end of your journey, you just might see yourself with nothing but your shadow. Don’t waste your life boasting and ruining your character, rather, build it and leave a mark. Nursing is not just about abundant knowledge and skills, but it also focuses on apposite attitude and discipline. Selfdiscipline, as we all perceive, entails liberty, and liberty is having personal responsibility and free will. Freedom is handed to you unbroken and intact. You have the freedom from sluggishness and wickedness. You have the freedom from catastrophe and breakdown. You have the freedom from annoyance and failure. You are free to spread your wings, and fly -- in a disciplined and fine-looking way. Don’t just throw it. “The key of an individual towards success ay ang positive attitude, kahit gaano ka pa katalino at kagaling sa skills, kung wala naming tamang attitude, hindi din tayo makakagalaw ng maayos.” Mr. Catacutan further stated. What you are as a student nurse now can be who you are as a professional nurse before long. IN is your ground preparation for your future career -- make full use of it. Tamaraw nurses, whether you belong to a certain committee or not, everyone should work with each other, not against each other. In this way, attitude will truly be reflected, which will make the IN community progress together as one, living a well-coordinated and well-disciplined nursing journey. After all, wearing a white clinical uniform and a green smock gown was once a dream for all the IN students. Take pleasure in your life as a student nurse, it wouldn’t last long. Life is not just about the “A” grades, because after all, in the years to come, you will not remember the dates, but the engaging moments. College years will never be considered as one’s past; it will always be a mirror that reflects the strong foundation that one has built. Go get good grades, but don’t forget to develop your attitude for the best rewards always await: true friends, superb experiences, and boundless memories. Four years of laughter, four years of sacrifices, four years of following the rules, four years of preparation, and four years of delight. Don’t misuse it.

Typically and persistently, the urban lad and ladies nowadays are not anymore like the Maria Clara or the Crisostomo Ibarra of the classical times. Circumstances change, and so do we. Apparel seems to impose the modesty as we talk, eat, and walk like no other than the famous TV stars, music icons and prominent people. Is it just to be called as the Mr. or Ms. Fabulous? Apparently not. It is a lifelong passion of reinventing ourselves towards pleasing other people. It’s a part of our daily life no matter what. And for some, those who don’t adopt to these changes – they are the anachronistic fad —outdated of what’s in and out. But there are people who tend to act differently from other people, not even classified as one of the cult member of Emo-evolution Society, the Gangsters, Geeks, the Rastas (Rastafarians) and so forth. These are the people with personality disorder or should I say strayed personas? Do you even mind considering yourself susceptible? Maybe you should. Because of the commonplace word we can hear almost every day—stress, stress and stress. Take a look; here are the signs and symptoms common to Institute of Nursing (IN) students. Where do you belong? The OC-OCleanical students The “OC-OC” (Obsessive-Compulsive) students as being very preoccupied with cleanliness and orderliness, they would paint their clinical shoes with white house paint just to look as white as new (though there are still some cracks as evidence of raggedness from duties), they have to go to comfort room at least every hour not to release their “sama ng loob” but to just do make-up on their face or rearranging their shark like hair-do. In the hospitals (usually private), they tend to use the free hand Alcohol or the Sterilium as often as they can, even though they are only in the ward area and not on strict aseptic rooms like Operating room (OR) or Delivery room (DR). One IN student stated, “Prone ako sa Obsessive-Compulsive [disorder] kasi ayoko talagang nadudumihan, naiirita ako,’ saka I’m very in particular sa time management.”

The Leech/Parasite/Dependent students Dependent students, unlike avoidant student, they do not avoid responsibility, instead they depend on others to accomplish the responsibilities given unto them. Classic example is copying answers to other when there are exams and asking someone (Boyfriend/Girlfriend) to do their assignments for them. They belong to the taxonomy of parasite students. Beware! As one IN students implicated, “Lumalabas lang naman ‘yung pagiging dependent ko kapag nagpapa-submit ng EBN (Evidenced Based Nursing) ‘yung C.I. (Clinical Instructor) namin. Ang ginagawa ko nanghihingi nalang ako sa mga kakilala ko sa ibang group o section, tapos ie-edit ko nalang ‘yung conclusion para naman may ginawa ako kahit papaano,” she quipped with a laugh.

The Pseudohinala “Pseudohinala” also known as “Maling Akala” is a trait common to Filipino people. But in the IN setting, they are evident in paranoid students. These students are mistrustful and suspicious to others. Example of these behaviors are seen when they are walking alone particularly i n t h e a l l e y s of Recto where it’s known for the reputation of being the thieves hideout, The Gothic Histrionics probably if you approach them The Histrionic students have excessive emotionality. from behind they will panic, Don’t get sloppy when talking to them because if you do hurt their scream, or run—just feelings, better watch out for the syringes they possess, they might get ready for the big slap use it to puncture you. Note: Have an adequate rest prior to dealing though. An IN student said, with them—they are hyperactive. They are attention seeker that’s “Paranoid ako in a form na pag nag- why they tend to have a gothic like appearance of having heavy lalakad ako pauwi, kinakabahan ako eye-liners, some tattoos and weird hair colors. But don’t worry on at kung anu-ano ang naiisip ko lalo them; the Discipline Committee is always there to care for them. An na kapag wala akong IN student emphasized “Histrionic… sabi nila parang ganon daw kasama kasi baka ma- ‘yung classmate naming e. Tapos sisingit at sisingit siya sa usapan kahit minsan hindi naman talaga niya alam ‘yung pinagT h e A v o i d a n t uusapan.” And he added, “Tama ba? May mga tao kasing ganon fellow talaga, di ba?” Avoidant, from the root word ‘to The IR-philiacs Antisocial avoid’, is the characteristic An Incident Report (IR) is written by those students who of an IN student with disregard the Institute’s policies. Excellence does not simply talk about being on the top; it is more on giving your best shot in every single work that you do. The Far Eastern University Institute of Nursing (FEU-IN) always aims for excellence, and never for unsatisfactory creations. It recognizes blessings as inspiration, and struggles as strength, for being the best means entangling the road of calmness and challenges. As manifested in the official website of the university, what crafts IN is its possession of inimitable features which include being “value-driven, critical thinker, technologically proficient, research-oriented; and with leadership, who are committed to the profession to provide safe, quality, and humane care”. With this scheme in our hearts, we have to revisit the verity that it is not acquired in just one day, for IN keeps on imparting these traits not as a single activity, but as a habit, a productive habit. Generate the mirage of success, and embark your dynamic IN destiny. FEU-IN is overwhelmed by the thought that the Almighty God is eager to be involved in the details of its history. For almost 82 years of upbringing the spotlight, the Institute of Nursing is indeed, an epitome of quality education. But you have to brood over that no one has ever landed to the top of the stairway without lingering through a gloomy and painful course of study and establishment. It does not come in a snap for it involves a lot of work and time. It even means occupying all of your days. Victory revolves in its minute details. IN: A Masterpiece Even the worldwide known website of the Wikipedia has its outstanding remarks for the history of the Institute, in the year 1955, IN initially offered three-year diploma program which contributes to a nondegree Graduate in Nursing (GN). On the second semester of the same school year, a supplemental program was posed to aim understanding of the profession, it was known as the two-year Advance Professional Program. In 1960, the School of Nursing was then aggrandized to an Institute with Mrs. Felicidad D. Elegado as the first dean. To heighten the eminence of the curriculum, the three-year course was transfigured to a five-year baccalaureate program spearheading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). When Dean Elegado retired in 1978, the secretary of the institute, Lydia A. Palaypay, took over the deanship. It was during her leadership that the five-year baccalaureate was transmogrified to a four-year BSN curriculum. In 1994, Prof. Norma Dumadag, became the dean of the Institute, where IN procured the Level II Philippine Accreditors’ Association of Schools and Universities (PAASCU) standards of CMO No. 27 series of 1998. During also her authority, BSN curriculum was rejuvenated effective SY 1998-1999, in which students will abide two years of Associate in Health Science Education (AHSE). And in 2008, students were required to pursue the BSN without going through the AHSE curriculum. FEU-IN is now honored and respected for its first level of accreditation with the PAASCU in 1997, second level in 2000, and ratified after five years (2005) with the second level reaccreditation. Also, Class 1993 and 1994 grabbed the flying colors with a 100% passing rate in the nursing board. IN’s Associate Dean Ma. Belinda Buenafe stated, “In viewing the past years, the most glorious day of IN would probably be the 60’s to 70’s where having a 100% passing rate is not a question because it’s already given, instead, the question will be, ‘What is FEU’s place in the board examination?’” IN didn’t have it furnished perfectly in the succeeding years, but it was placed as the top ONE among other nursing schools today, and with several Tamaraw examinees

landing on the top ten through the years. “Now that FEU IN is considered as the top one nursing school in the country with regards to its passing rate, we feel very proud, of course. But then, we should not stop there, we are still aiming for the utmost part of success which is the 100% passing rate in the nursing licensure examinations,” she added. Ms. Buenafe asserted, “The commitment of the institute to pursue and sustain excellence is by setting high standards, and in which, we are committed to innovations and continuous quality improvement.” The Institute with its unique way, never failed to do things that makes everyone an achiever. The IN community is highly distinguished because the students and faculty never stop on improving, fighting against the challenges that blocks the IN journey. “The biggest dream of FEU IN is indeed, to be the Center of Excellence among nursing schools in the country. Now, we are constructing a development plan that provides quality faculty because it is from them where the knowledge of the students is enriched. Also, we are aiming for the Level III PAASCU Accreditation in which we will hopefully have high remarks in all areas checked by the PAASCU,” Ms. Buenafe added. Ever since, this is what IN is all about: EXCELLENCE. Every member of the IN community has carved love, passion, and courage in every skill they do, resulting to a marvelous masterpiece.

IN: With Highest Distinction The driving forces of IN includes professional policies on students, master’s prepared faculty, different programs such as the Student-Teacher Act Mentoring Program(STAMP), and technological investment such as the Virtual Integrated Nursing Education Simulation (VINES) Laboratory. The STAMP took the students somewhat by surprise and indulgence since help will be presented to everyone to nurture the foundation instilled in every student’s knowledge. Indeed, the program was a straightforward answer to the queries of students regarding topics left vague during classroom scenarios. The program was not simply implemented to heighten IN image, but to emphasize more on ameliorating the knowledge, skills, and attitude inculcated already in every student. More so, FEU is even regarded as the most technologically equipped nursing school here in the Philippines because of the closely hospital set-up of the VINES lab, the first virtual nursing laboratory here in the country, second in Asia. FEU’s Vines Lab nearly estimates the standards of the Joint Commission, the leading health care accrediting body in the United States of America (USA). Furthermore, FEU has also collaborated with the AUSTCO, the leader in quality nurse call systems to subsidize the only vanguard, upper hand nurse call system in the Philippines. In this fast-changing world, VINES lab is a place for preparation among students in handling different health crisis scenarios with prompt intervention. Through the framework of the curriculum which includes competency, community, and evidence; IN graduates continuously

pervade good positions in different health institutions such as in Philippine Heart Center and St. Luke’s Medical Center and abroad. Being a nurse was never easy; it requires true passion and hard work. For most nurses, it is actually a calling. Taking care of the clients whom you never considered as strangers must be done with knowledge, skills, and attitude, and these make up the Related Learning Experience (RLE) of the Institute. The center of the IN care will always be towards the health of the people, as its motto: Hominem Non Morbum Cura (Treat the Man, Not the Disease). IN: Heart and Soul IN made a positive impact on the academic aspect of every student, but it does not end here. To aid in the growth of interpersonal, relational, and professional skills, the Institute help the faculty and the students to be aware of the current trends in the nursing education through various seminars and conferences. Furthermore, through the different flagships under the Institute of Nursing Student Council (INSC) which comprises of the Institute of Nursing Music Ministry (INMM), Institute of Nursing Theatre Arts Committee (INTAC), The LAMP, and others, it also emphasizes aspects on leadership, skills and talent welfares. IN has always been surrounded by excellence in different domains of life. The current INSC president Mr. Ian Tiotangco stated, “Excellence is not being the best, it is doing your best. Year after year, the Institute keeps on improving, and as we go out of the university, we carry the values that we have learned inside, and one of them is excellence. As the INSC president, I aim to help the community by starting inside the council, it cannot be done in one click, but we can achieve it gradually. Thus, 10 years from now, I still see IN as an epitome of excellence.” The excellence of IN is undoubtedly an inspiration for all to do more that will result in a blazing torch. From the dean of the institute to the associate dean down to the faculty and students, everyone keeps on improving the quality of what IN has to offer. IN firmly holds excellence, doing supreme skills but not egocentricity, and showcasing dignified attitude and performing never less than excellent activities. Indeed, the reflection of FEU-IN is extraordinary. Therefore, as pieces making up the huge picture of the IN community, we have to live up to its legacy. It’s not just about being thankful for attaining the paramount image of IN, rather, grasping it and using it to improve or maintain the buoyancy of the Tamaraws. Whether you are the top student, or the mediocre one; the leader, or the follower; the educator, or the student – you represent what IN is. Bear the hallmark of success in everything that you do by keeping in your heart that you can still bring out the best in you. Red lights and crossroads may occur in every nursing career, but never forget the fact that straight paths and green lights do exist as well. You may not know it, but in fact, you are a big contribution to the becoming of the FEU-IN. Live with firm Strength, pure Heart, good Attitude, wonderful Personality, and fruitful Experiences. Explore the voyage of human care and perch your nursing providence through the IN way. Tamaraw nurses, keep believing in your capabilities: you are unique, well driven, disciplined, deserving; and most significantly, keep in your heart that you do possess excellence.

Procrastinating or the delayed inaction in its very meaning, has seem to be an intimidating ban word to some, while it plays an important buzz word for others. Filipinos, world widely speaking, are known for their many positive attitudes: hospitable, best cook, tender-lovingcare giver, talented, and competently wise. Of course, there would always be dispositions that would negate positive aura. Mañana habit, Bahala na si (put your choice of hero here), and Filipino time are the common and are spreading amongst Filipino like that of virus. The intricate idea of these Filipino’s temperament has drawn attention to the dearth of organization Time management stuff has been dating on student’s calendar since then on and in as much as many times this time sorting has been listed in New Year’s Resolution, it has never been hundred percent granted. The smothering school work, way of lifestyle, peer pressure, and relationships are some reasons that insinuate time managing and at the same time the reasons that devalue it. Paradoxical, eh? In the movie 500 days of summer, the part when Summer told Tom about the what-if thoughts she has: “Summer: So, what if I’d gone to the movies? What if I had gone somewhere else for lunch? What if I’d gotten there 10 minutes later?” To cut the readings short, if any of the abovementioned has ever happened, things would not be as it should. (I’m not a spoiler, so I’m not telling!) Just as this one philosopher who asserts that life is a sequence, that there are actually millions of possibilities that could happen and that life is a continuous or a connected series. Domino effect, so to speak. Now, let’s see what consequences there are in procrastinating. Forewarning: This is a work of fiction. Any

resemblance to actual persons or incident is purely coincidental. = ) It’s now or later. Scenario 1: Student A loaded with activities for tomorrow is upset what he’ll be focusing first. Minutes later and he ends up Facebook-ing, hours and hours passed, and still Facebook-ing. Morning came; the clock alarms, unheard, alarms and alarms again till he wakes up and he does things fast forward. Nearing the room, he treads like he’s being chased and sees his classmates already busy answering the exam. He enters, he apologizes, and he sits down. He sees this enumeration and feels dumb for not knowing any of that. Bell comes and the usual commotion. Student A: “Alam nyo ba ung sa enumeration?” Classmate 1: “Oo, may nag bigay samin ng tip eh.” Classmate 2: “Sana inagahan mo para na-memorize mo din.” If only . . . Scenario 2: Student B comes in school on time, but she can’t afford to rush herself climbing up the 8th floor and so she waits for that box-office elevator. Upon arriving in their room, she finds out that she is late for the quiz – that one quiz that could have made her to the list. If only . . . To cheat or not to cheat. Case 1: Student C loves partying and keeps her social life bustling, so she risks studying her exam and instead parties all night long. During their exam, she is surprised to see a paper being passed up, and yes, it’s her lucky day. But when she is about to pass that paper, it paper slips out her hand. Shaking and trembling, she fervently prays the professor won’t notice. Vamoose. Case 2: Student D unprepared for the unit exam, hurries to copy his notes on his armchair. Unfortunately, the professor requires them to be shuffled. Vamoose. Case 3: Student E is busy saying her answer to her friend. Unseen, their

Last year’s catastrophe – “Ondoy” – has left a very traumatic experience that is still fresh in every Filipino’s mind today. In commemoration to this, Far Eastern University Central Student Organization (FEUCSO), in association with the Tamaraw Volunteers (TAMVOL), launched two new programs - “NESSA” (No Entry of Styrofoam and Straw Advocacy) and “UTUBE” (Use your own TUmbler and Baonan for the Environment) that for a discount to be given to those aim to help the environment by lessening who will present tumblers and and, in the long run, prohibiting the use of lunchboxes upon purchasing. disposables in eating inside the campus. He said that these programs are just two phases of the three-fold campaign in the total elimination of the usage of Styrofoam and straws within the university’s premises.

professor is already behind them. Friend: “Uy ang ingay mo magbasa ng tanong!” Professor: “Stop sharing your answers.” Vamoose. Crumbling and cramming. Scene 1: Student F likes cramming and believes that he’ll do things with the power of adrenalin rush. Deadline came fast approaching; still, he is lax and unwary. The day before its due, an announcement is made, hence making their schedule tight big time. The big day came, and he wasn’t able to pass his two assignments. Uh-oh. Scene 2: Student G forgets to do her NCPs, lacking enough time to so such, she decides to copy her friend’s file. Unluckily, the name of the client isn’t changed together with its other information. The C.I asks why and the student, so good at defending, tells her C.I that she has the same case handled before and apologizes for overlooking it. Uh-oh. Lessons, lessons. Whether we want it or not, lessons almost always arrives the latter. Conversely though, those situations that was told earlier, doesn’t mean to degrade and deride mistakes done accidentally. As Groucho Marx once advised, “We should learn from the mistakes of others. We don’t have time to make them ourselves.” This also applies in our everyday life, where we are asked and tasked to do more with lesser time. Because of this, however, some of us believe that escape puts the pressure away. Partly,

society regarding the said programs varied from apathetic reaction to agreement and to mild protest. “I don’t really think that bringing o f tumbler a n d

t h e answer i s yes and simultaneously too, we tend to forget the basics and whys we are striving in this journey we chose. It is the basics of life, that life is so like a picture; sometimes it’s perfect with its vivid saturation, and sometimes it’s best in its black and white. That’s the catch. That’s nature. We get used to it and manage it good, or else we won’t achieve the most coveted of all – success – the whys. To be successful is what everybody desires (not a hypocrite would even deny that). But what really is success? Success is happiness. Happiness is being able to string along in this imperfect world of ours. So fair enough, procrastinating is likely and inevitable. Just be reminded that there are limitations in everything and it’s that wisdom reigns above all else. You c a n have all the knowledge you want, but wisdom without in it is nothing. “Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life.”— Sandra Carey

On the other hand, another fourth year student of the institute, Justine Glen Ignacio, sees the matter at hand on a different perspective. H e explained, “ K u n g n a k a baunan t a y o , parang h i n d i ganun kaganda tignan k a d a bibili t a y o , i-aabot mo ‘yung baunan mo or tumbler mo para lagyan ng pagkain o salinan ng tubig… pero a c t u a l l y, maganda n a m a n ‘ y a n g proposed project na ‘yan for the environment, kaso kailangan diyan

However, they guaranteed that they will go with the arrangements of the Administration and their business heads. As of the moment, they refused to support any side. The Benefits Roxas said that he knows the students’ and the affected food and beverage industries’ concerns; thereby, he reassured that this program is a win-win to all the parties ncluded. As aforementioned above, the students, faculties, and staffs will get to save money from the discounts for their efforts of supporting the advocacy, plus it will also inculcate the value of discipline on them. On the part of the businesses, the program will help them cut their expenses on disposables. As for the environment and the community as a whole, there will be less trashes and less pollution; thus, a longer life for Mother Earth and to its inhabitants. The Program in Progress Currently, FEUCSO and TAMVOL are still on the information dissemination phase regarding the projects. The full implementation of the overall program is predicted to be felt by the start of 2011.

Research

Hypertension also known as “Silent Killer” ranks fifth as leading cause of death in the Philippines according to the Philippine Health Statistics (2004). Also, Department of Health (DOH) says that 1 out of 4 Filipino adults suffer from hypertension, or high blood pressure. With those figures stated who’s not to be alarmed? In the midst of our country’s current status quo, Filipinos are in any way, expected to be economical. With the news being delivered every day, it’s a must to stay fit and healthy. But what if there’s this Hypertension that impedes good health? How would you veer away from the reeling truth of spending money wisely yet stay in a good shape? Would you go for branded medicines that aren’t just being advertised on television, billboards, etc? Or would you choose generics and save money instead? BSN 112, Group 46, conducted a study entitled “Effectiveness between Generic and Branded Medication in Lowering Blood Pressure Among Hypertensive Adults” with the supervision of Professor Dante Tan, RN, MAN. The said research utilized Quasi-experimental design specifically nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The study’s setting was in Don Quijote St. Sampaloc, Manila, and it comprises of 20 subjects who were able to meet the eligibility criteria: 1) lives in Don Quijote, 2) 40-60 years old, 3) diagnosed by the physician as recorded in the health center’s logbook with hypertension, 4) issued with medical certificate regarding hypertension, 5) taking maintenance medication on hypertension, 6) validated by the researcher with hypertension, i.e. blood pressure level above 140/90, during the initial and secondary screening, 7) willing to participate. And without any other disease, those who do not smoke or drink alcohol, obese, with allergy again Metropolol, those who engaged in strenuous activities or jobs, and those who were not present or were not in their house during the visit of the researchers.

diastolic from 96.35 to 90.85. On the other hand, those who took branded medicines, their systolic blood pressure were 146.30 mmHg on pre-test and went to 139.55 mmHg on post-test and, the diastolic was 96.9 mmHg down to 90.8 mmHg. The mean difference in systolic blood pressure of generic and branded medication were7.00 and 6.75, correspondingly. Meanwhile, the mean difference in diastolic blood pressure levels of generic and branded medication were 5.5 and 6.1, respectively.

That said states the systolic blood pressure levels of the subjects taking generic medicine was higher by 0.25 than of those who took branded medicine. Whereas, the diastolic blood pressure of respondents who took branded medicine was higher by 0.60 than that of the generic medicine. With the data laid, study found that both generic and branded medicines have almost the same significant effect on lowering blood pressure. There are number of people who are concern whether generic drugs are as good as branded ones since the former are purchased not as much amount. It is a notion that once a product is sold cheaper, its quality is rather less effective. Branded drugs are being preferred more mainly because of its famous manufacturer name, or the advertisement it gets, be it through media or the doctors themselves, still, buyers should not be impulsive and conclusive naming generic as inferior. Bureau of Foods and Drugs (BFAD) are the ones responsible for passing and approving the standards of a certain drug, thus both the quality of branded and generic drugs did not depend on company name, but on product itself.

Respondents were randomly selected on a fish ball method which will indicate if they are to take generic or branded antihypertensive drugs (intervention). The implementation was a 20-day phase that started on August 9, 2010 till the 30th of the same month. The subjects’ blood pressure was measured as for the pretest before giving the intervention and a post-test of about one and a half hour after the onset of medicine.

According to Department of Health (DOH) undersecretary Alexander Padilla, [he] also maintained his stand for generics medicines and said the efficacy of a drug does not depend on its brand as long as it passes the standards of the BFAD. Nonetheless, Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Vice President Dr. Rey Melchor Santos said studies abroad show that generic drugs are not as effective as branded ones when it comes to complicated diseases.

Results shown the mean systolic blood pressure of the group taking generic medicines, as their pre-test reveals 151.15 mmHg, and upon giving the intervention, it dropped down to 144.15 mmHg, respectively, and their

Despite all the issues being talked about whether which between generic and branded medicine is more effective, it is safe to say that both drugs are trustworthy. Should you be carried away by hearsays, or commercials? The judgment is all up to you.

Dengue has been a threat not only to Filipinos, but also to other countries as well. It has been mounting unstoppably, indeed. It was just last August 24, 2010 that the Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Enrique Ona said, “dengue is now a ‘serious concern’ after the number of cases rose by 75% from January to August this year, compared to the same period last year.” And with the booming number of dengue cases here in the Philippines, the birth of different mosquito repellents came into picture as well. There are bath and skin products, insect repellent spray, electronic mosquito killer, and yes, natural mosquito repellent. To name some, there are lemon grass, neem, citronella, cedar wood, pennyroyal, peppermint, eucalyptus, et al. BSN 118, Group 69 of Far Eastern University, found another organic plant that is said to be economically available and is cost effective – Coffea arabica Linn or which is also known as Coffee. “Naisip namin na dengue repellent na lang since madami ‘yung cases ng dengue lalo na during that season,” said Nyhro Jamin Ubaldo, group leader. Their experiment necessitates exposure of human forearms from the research team who are then randomly selected through fishbowl method. Meanwhile, there were three different trials where respondents were exposed to 63 Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes (50 female and 13 male). First trial test involved no repellent with the control group. Second trial tested extracted alkaloid from coffee and at the same time used ethanol as their medium. Lastly, third trial included commercially prepared mosquito repellent spray. They made then the alkaloid extract to mosquito repellent, which is according to their Research is effective in killing mosquitoes without negative effects to the team.

When asked about their struggles in making their Research possible Hubalde stated, “Struggles? Pang fourth Research proposal na namin ‘to. And ayun we finally came up with this around July. Tapos we also had problems financially. Isang lamok kasi is five pesos tapos we need 50 mosquitoes sa pilot study pa lang. We used 2000 mosquitoes all in all.” With the help of Research for Tropical Medicine (RITM), they were able to use equipments that they would need in the Coffea arabica Linn alkaloid extraction. Also, it was in RITM that they conducted their Research proper. However, the group comprises of the following: Alminar, Querobin; Jacon, Aileah Rose; Lim, Lorelie; Macaladlad, Denise Dianne; Mina, Jaeworth; Panciles, Marben; Peras III, Enrique; Quiocho, Christine Anne; Saure, Ma. Cristine Joy; Solomon, Joyce Janine; Ubaldo, Nyhro Jamin. More so, it was in the month of December that their Research adviser, Dr. Jesson V. Butcon, announced the good fate: Their work was chosen to be

presented in the 14th East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (Research Methodology for Building Nursing Evidence). Hence, they were able to discuss their research last February 12, 2011,10.30 a.m. at Seoul Olympic Parktel, Seoul, South Korea, accordingly. Indeed, mosquito repellents are now teeming their way to extinguish mosquitoes’ dynasty. So to end, the glory of BSN 118, Group 69, is not just for the Nursing community, neither for the FEU community alone, but for the Philippine pride, too!

November - February 2010

Let me tell you a story about the day when I first met Superman. It was a fine and typical evening where I was at our balcony gazing at the sky. The heaven was so stunning that night, as if there was a jewel thief who poured a pouchful of diamonds into a black velvet cloth. Then, out of the blue, something from the sky is fast approaching me. I’ve heard my nephews behind me who were playing minutes ago, now arguing whether the thing that is drawing nearer us is a bird or a plane. ‘I’m very sure, it is a bird!’ said the younger one. ‘No, it’s a plane!’ insisted by the other. Then in a snap, there he was, saying ‘No, It is just me, Superman.’ ‘Why are you here?’ I asked him. ‘Likewise, I don’t know. I just believe there is something you want to ask me.’ He responded. I spoke to myself. What is it? Ah right! ‘Actually, yes you are right Superman, there is one thing I’ve been longing to ask you. Why do you keep on saving the day? What is it that you’ve found among us, humans, why you continue saving us?’ I’ve asked him. ‘Well, to tell you

honestly, I really like human beings because you’re so funny due to your contradictoriness.’ He answered. ‘Why is that? What do you suggest then?’ I retorted back. He amusingly said ‘Well, I’ve observed that you are in such a hurry to grow up, and then you long for your lost childhood. I asked ‘What’s the matter if people are in a hurry to grow up? I mean who doesn’t? Besides, I believe it is normal to reminisce your childhood days. ’ ‘Yes you may be right that there’s nothing wrong to recall your childhood, but try to think of this. Every time you remember your childhood days, what do you see? Is it always cherry on top? Have you ever had a chance playing with your childhood friends under the basked of the sun, having spanked by your mother because you acquired sunburn but you seem not to mind because you were having so much fun then, and then, one day you had a cold because you bathe in the rain with your friends, and yet you seem not to care because all you think is you’ve enjoyed every moment of it. Have you ever experienced

having dirt all over your face while playing with your peers, and yet it seems to be none of your concern because all you felt at that moment was pure innocence and happiness. If that’s not the case, I suggest you slow down a bit, and learn to appreciate the beauties surrounding you as you grow and age,’ came as his reply. He added, ‘Then, you make yourselves ill earning money, and then spend all your money on getting well again. I inquired, ‘What’s wrong if people tend to work hard. Money is a basic necessity, you need it for survival.’ He responded ‘Yes I agree that being hard working is essential, but you must always remember that everything taken in excess is harmful to your mind, body, and soul. Are you aware that one of the leading causes of mortality today is Cancer and Cardiac diseases, and one of its predisposing factors is too much stress? Ponder on this one, “Do you really need excessive amounts of money for you just to sustain your extravagances? Or you only need an exact amount enough for your family

and own survival.” I advise, you take a break from time to time, and breath as if there’s no tomorrow. Everything isn’t just about money. Value your life. Take good care of your health. Do this for yourself and for those who are dear to you. He continued ‘Also, you think so much about the future that you neglect the present, and thus experience neither the present nor the future.’ I said ‘Of course we need to secure our future. In that way we will only feel safe.’ He commented, ‘Yes, you are right again, but come to think of this one. Is your life always in a routine? Every day, do you always foresee and expect things to happen because everything seems to be usual. Are you easily bored most of the time? Do you feel like the fire in your hearts slowly fades away? Were you still able to remember the times when your parents, wife, children, relatives and friends tried to tell you something really important, and yet you were just half listening because you were so busy then thinking about your future? I recommend, you pause for a while, and savor what’s in store

today while it lasts.’ He pursued ‘Lastly, you live as if you were never going to die, and die as if you had never lived. Always remember, enjoy life to the fullest. You have only one chance to live, so you better make the most out of it.’ ‘If that’s the case, will all of these would help us do better in the future?’ I pleaded. ‘I really don’t know. Only you could answer that. You might ask yourself this, “Are you contented with your life now? Or, you are just satisfied, and want to achieve more? Do you live a life of happiness, or you are full of regrets and what ifs?” the answer lies in your hands. It’s time for me to go.’ He countered. ‘But wait, Supermaaaaaaaaan!’ ‘Oh it was all just a dream, a very mind boggling one.’ I looked around, my nephews are watching Tom and Jerry. ‘Wait, I think I forgot something.’ I could hear my heart panting. ‘Oh snap, right I still have my NCP due on one hour. What am I going to do?’ All of a sudden, I’ve remembered what Superman told me. A smile painted on my face.

I found the comrade of my heart in you A chum whom I will never get tired of beating for The rendezvous of light lies ahead In the road of bliss where you and I cannot resist With all the places I’ve been through Staying beside you is the most paramount one I once dream for you in the air But now, heaven’s got to embrace me so tightly I am a millionaire for having the most incomparable wealth I am a commander for perching my destiny I am a magician for making my dreams come true And, I am a woman for sincerely loving you
