Introduction A CALL TO PRAY FOR THE NATION JANUARY 24-26, 2013 “FOR SUCH AS TIME AS THIS?” – ESTHER 4:14 Dear Pastors, Church Prayer Coordinators and Intercessors Our desire is for the Malaysian church to become God’s instrument of blessing for the nation. This year of Jubilee is also a critical time in the history of our nation. Therefore, we ask of you to urgently gather members of your congregation to rally together as a people of God to a nationwide 3-Day fast and prayer, following after Queen Esther’s example, so that our congregations will learn to turn to God in prayer and fasting in unity of heart and mind. We believe that if we are to see the power of God entering into the hearts of men and women, redeeming individuals and transforming the nation, we must come together in unity and reconciliation, humble ourselves before God, and seek His mercies once again. This is also for us to come together to prepare for the upcoming General Elections to ask the Lord for a special blessing. We appeal to the faithful to soak the nation in prayer. We ask all Christians to remain faithful, that in our exercise of leadership and stewardship in obedience to God’s Word, that we exercise our duty to nation building to vote as well as to soak in prayer the nation’s well being; ahead, during, and after the general elections. We believe that this election season is one of the most critical of our nation’s history as it will be held during the Jubilee year, a spiritual reset for the nation. This is not a coincidence. Choices made today will impact the next generation. The choices we make today will impact the nation’s course and our children’s future for decades to come. When we do so, we believe that our congregations will see the powers of heaven released upon our nation once again in our time, seek His favour for our land and to glorify His name. This 3-Day prayer guide serves to help members of your congregation to follow through in devotion, reflection and prayer.

A. DEVOTION
FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS
DAY 1
“For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” - Esther 4:14 (ESV) • “..if you keep silent…” Injustice thrives when Christians keep silent. Queen Esther had much to lose. The risk was real. And so, it is with us. In times when evil is at its peak, do we sit and do nothing? When injustice devours the land and oppresses the poor, do we stay silent and permit its treachery? If we do not do so, God will raise another to fulfil His purpose for this nation. Will we take action? • “..at this time…” The time is now. Our Master calls us to have a greater sense of urgency, “for the fields are white with harvest.” All authority in heaven and earth has been given to us to proclaim His name, to do what is right and neutralize evil’s corrosion of our nation and the region around us. Will we obey Him immediately? • “…but you and your father's house will perish …” The price of our silence is the destruction of the Church. We cannot expect deliverance if we are not united and single-minded in proclaiming Christ and bringing God’s justice. The national church needs to put aside its differences and agendas, and realise that this is a spiritual battle against principalities and powers in high places. Therefore, we cannot afford to stand divided and remain distracted. Are we aware of the consequences of our silence? • “…who knows…” We may not be sure if we are the ones called but the urgent cry is to be THAT generation and THAT person God can use fully to be His voice for today’s battles. Will we say, “Here am I, send me?” • “…for such a time as this?” The time to follow God’s plan is NOW. We need to get down on our knees and humble ourselves, confess our sins so that God will hear our prayers and heal our land. Let us then refocus and realign the direction of our arrows and spears, not against each other but, together in the same direction against the evil one. The battle is the Lord’s! Are we ready?

DAY 1
B. REFLECTION
FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14 (ESV) • Our nation has seen many revivals such as the Bario, the Bakelalan and the recent charismatic revivals. Yet, we see little impact of these revivals in touching and the church and bringing social reform to the nation. Has the Malaysian Church grieved the Holy Spirit? If so, how did that happen and what must we do about it? • What are the roadblocks that have prevented unity? • Each one participating in this national prayer has been purposefully chosen by the Lord. It is not a coincidence. We are accountable to the Lord, and also to the prayers of those who have prayed for us in the past that we may fulfil His purpose and the tasks set before us. In our current state, would we fulfil His purpose for this generation, or would we find ourselves missing out on the tasks set before us to complete? “Lord, help us to repent and rebuild. We want to confess our own sin and the sins of your church. ‘We have acted very wickedly … we have not obeyed.’ Lord, have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins. Lord, you call us to rebuild. Give us success. Your church lies in ruins. Your people are in great trouble and disgrace. The walls are broken down. May the church in this country rise up again and say, ‘Come, let us rebuild’. Help us not to be put off by all the opposition, mocking and ridicule. But rather to say, ‘The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding.’” - Prayer taken from Nicky Gumbel’s Bible in One Year

C. PRAY FOR MALAYSIA
DAY 1
A CALL TO PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH AND THE NATION 1. Humbling Ourselves to Seek God in Prayer • Pray that the Malaysian church will seek the face of God together earnestly and with perseverance, so that He will open the heavens, reveal His glory and pour His power upon our nation. • Let us claim His promise that “if my people … humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). 2. Emphasising Holiness and Righteousness in the Church • Pray that pastors, church leaders and members will strive to live godly lives at home, in church, and in the market place and the public square. • Pray that every church will provide systematic teaching on holy living from the pulpit, in our small groups, and at every level of church ministry. 3. Fostering Church Unity and the Ministry Of Reconciliation • Pray that Christians will make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit, embracing reconciliation within the Christian community. • Pray that as Christian leaders, local churches and whole denominations learn to live in unity, through forgiveness and reconciliation, we will model ethnic reconciliation powerfully in our nation.

DAY 1

Prayer at State and Local Level • Pray that the man and woman of righteousness, the person of God's choosing, will be elected to every office at the state ADUN level. • Pray that all state, city and town councilors and representatives are persons of God’s choosing, upholding honest and diligent work, truth, justice and righteousness. • “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” ~ Proverbs 29:2

IF I PERISH, I PERISH
DAY 2
“Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.” - Esther 4:16 (ESV) • “Go, gather all…” The time has come for us to gather all our Church family as one. Preparing for a spiritual battle requires the entire people of God coming together in prayer, as we can’t battle this alone. How’s the health of our church prayer meetings? Shall we gather all in prayer? • “…hold a fast…” We live in a blessed nation where we live to eat! Food is a temptation. We never stop talking about the next meal. If our hearts desire the transformation of the nation, then the time for fasting is NOW. Through the discipline of fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit can transform not only our personal lives, but also the life of the Church and of the nation. Shall we discipline our bodies and fast? • “Then I will go…” Every soldier goes to battle with a haunting question in his mind, “Will this be my last?” Kissing farewell to his loved ones, he braves into formation leaving everything behind. When we choose to stand up for issues of injustice, corruption, poverty and marginalization, we are standing up for Christ. We are bound to be hated and plotted against just as how Christ was. Do we then stop and be overwhelmed by fear? Or do we make that first step of committing to go, even when everything seems impossible? Will I say, “Lord, I will go?” • “…though it is against the law..” The risks are not imaginary but real. We run smack against authorities and rules when we choose to walk this path of righteousness and faith. Persecution, and prosecution, are realities that we all face when we choose to obey God, and not men. Would we then deny Christ in order to fit in to society and the government of its day? Whom shall I choose to obey? • “…and if I perish, I perish…” Jesus says,” And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” This is the cost of following Jesus. Yet Paul counts the reward of following Christ most glorious, for he said in Philippians 1:21, ‘To live is Christ, and to die is gain’. Are we prepared to pay the price?

DAY 2
B. REFLECTION
IF I PERISH, I PERISH “To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations.” - Revelation 2:26 • Do you think God is more concerned about the condition of this country or about the condition of His Church? • Consider these 3 key warnings from the Lord about the state of His Church here in Malaysia: Ø
The disunity of the Malaysian Church;
Ø
The tolerance for sin and lack of regard for holiness; and,
Ø
The prayerlessness of the Church.
• How are we to overcome these?
“Lord, help us to be a pure and unpolluted church as you call us to the rebuilding of your people. Thank you that, although we are no better than the people of God in the time of Ezra, we are cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. Thank you that we are redeemed, purchased and purified by His blood. Lord, help us to be a pure church that speaks up for the voiceless, proclaims the eternal gospel to the nations and rebuilds the church in our cities and countries.” - Prayer taken from Nicky Gumbel’s Bible in One Year

DAY 2
A CALL TO PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH AND THE NATION 4. Teaching Christians the Cost of Discipleship • Pray that Christians will understand what true discipleship means, and be willing to take up their cross daily and suffer for Christ. • Pray that many Christian professionals and countless university students studying abroad will return with a clear vision to build both the church and nation. • Pray that Christian parents will encourage their children to come home or to remain in Malaysia to serve God here. 5. Developing Godly Leadership for Our Churches • Pray that church leaders, both pastoral and lay, will grow in depth and maturity as true shepherds of Christ. Pray that they will have a real hunger for God’s Word, a firm commitment to God’s truth and to live by it, and the courage to teach the same to their flocks. • Pray that the present generation of leaders will strive to lay strong foundations for churches and Christian organizations in our country, to model godly and humble servanthood, and to manage succession plans well, as they gradually hand over the baton of leadership to younger people. 6. Empowering Bumiputra Churches, Especially Those in East Malaysia • Pray for the increasing availability of both the Bible and discipleship materials in Bahasa Malaysia. • Pray for a growing and effective partnership in ministry and mission between the churches in West Malaysia and in East Malaysia. • Pray for the increasing emergence of strong churches among Bumiputra communities in our land, and the rising up of bold and God-fearing leaders among them. DAY 2
PRAYER FOR THE GENERAL ELECTIONS 3. Prayer for Voters • Pray that each citizen will be convicted to vote for the man and woman of righteousness, the person of God's choosing. Pray that God's Spirit will overshadow each one as he or she makes a decision when casting the vote. • "And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide ... by what his ears hear." ~ Isaiah 11:2-3 4. Prayer for Election Officials and Security Officers • Pray that every official involved in the election process – including the election officials, appointees, police, RELA and army - will serve with honesty and integrity of heart. • Pray also for polling and counting agents, as well as election observers, to serve diligently and honourably, ensuring accuracy and integrity in the entire election process. • "The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight." ~ Proverbs 11:1 5. Prayer for Civil Servants • For the civil servants to work with full integrity of heart for the good of the nation regardless of outcome of the elections. • “Not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free.” – Ephesians 6:6-8

FOR HOW CAN I BEAR TO SEE
DAY 3
“Then Esther spoke again to the king. She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan of Haman the Agagite and the plot that he had devised against the Jews. When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, Esther rose and stood before the king. And she said, “If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and if the thing seems right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. For how can I bear to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?” “ - Esther 8: 3-6 (ESV) • “Then Esther spoke again…” If we desire to see change in our nation, we need to persevere in relentless intercession and action. We need to combine prayer and action, walk in faith and obedience regardless of the circumstances. We need to cultivate a disciplined personal prayer life. We need to come together as the body of Christ to pray for one another, to intercede for the nation and nations beyond. Will we faithfully commit to prayer and action? • “She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded…” Our prayers need to be cried out of desperation and anguish. Our hearts ought to be totally broken and shattered for the sins of the land and the souls of the lost. We need to get down and serious with God. How desperate are we for our Church and nation? • “For how can I bear to see …” Just like Esther, we need to realise that we have been placed strategically to fulfil God’s purposes for this generation. We need to rise beyond ourselves and our comfort zones, and take risks for God, out of love for His people; our people. Such is the courage, persistence and desperation that is so needed to see God’s people vindicated and the nation saved. Can you bear to see what is about to happen to God’s Church and this nation, and not do anything?

DAY 3
B. REFLECTION
FOR HOW CAN I BEAR TO SEE “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” - Luke 4:18-19 (ESV) This year of Jubilee is a powerful reminder to all God’s people that God’s salvaWon includes restora(on and release so that there will always be jusWce, equity and freedom for all. What must we do to bring about a meaningful reset for this na(on? For breakthrough to happen in the naWon, it must begin with the holiness of the Church. The Church can only be God’s tool to peace and reconciliaWon if it bears the moral compass of holiness through its focus on unity, thri] and incorrupWbility. Is everyone only interested in pushing their own church plan, but no one has God’s heart for the naWonal Church and the region? Is the Church ready for such a role when it appears that we lack the moral fibre to effect it? What must we do about this?
•
•
“Lord Jesus, forgive us for the times when we have been unfaithful to You. Thank You, that in You there is still hope. Help us, like Ezra, to take our own sin and the sin of the community seriously – to pray, confess, weep, throw ourselves down before you in repentance and resolve to be radical and ruthless about avoiding unfaithfulness in the future. Lord, as we look around at the church in our nation we see a desperate need for rebuilding. Although the opposition is great, thank you that every small victory is a cause of great celebration. Thank you that we know that Jesus has overcome the devil. Thank you that God’s love is the guarantee of the final victory of good over evil. Help us to overcome by the blood of the Lamb, by the word of our testimony, and through the knowledge that, whatever happens, we can be confident of our own future because Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures through all generations.” - Prayer taken from Nicky Gumbel’s Bible in One Year

Making Malaysia a Model Nation • Pray that Malaysia, by God’s grace, will develop into an advanced economy and a stable and harmonious democracy, in which all citizens are equal, with fundamental liberties protected by the Constitution and a legal framework which protect the weakest and the least. DANIEL’S PRAYER FOR HIS PEOPLE “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, those who are near and those who are far away, in all the lands to which you have driven them, because of the treachery that they have committed against you. To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. And the curse and oath that are written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, by bringing upon us a great calamity. For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem. As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favour of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice. And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and have made a name for yourself, as at this day, we have sinned, we have done wickedly. Lord, according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy hill, because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become a byword among all who are around us. Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord, make your face to shine upon your sanctuary, which is desolate. O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. Delay not, for your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.”

A PRAYER OF RESPONSE AND COMMITMENT Lord, we gather before You humbly representing our nation Malaysia. We represent every race, community, family and individual in this land to ask and seek for Your forgiveness for our sins of unforgiveness, unholiness, selfish pride, self-righteousness, apathy, lack of compassion and love for one another. Lord, we want to stand in that gap to intercede for this nation for we know You have placed us here for a reason: to fulfil Your purposes for this nation. “And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Father, fill us with the power of Your Spirit that we may be bold ambassadors and witnesses for You to bring change and justice to every corner of this nation, lighting up Malaysia with Your glory and righteousness. Sovereign God, we ask of You to uncover and expose every darkness, breaking bondages and strongholds, to establish true freedom and victory in this year of Jubilee. We stand here before You, our Lord Jesus, lifting up our hands and our eyes to You as our only Hope and Redeemer who is worthy and able to do the impossible. We look to You desperately, we need You Lord! Hear our cry and restore us once again, for apart from You, we can do nothing. Without You, we as a nation and church will perish! Lord, I hereby commit my entire life, my plans, my future, my talents and my possessions into Your hands that You may be the Master and Ruler of them all. I am committed to obey Your will for my life and do my part to bring the glory and Kingdom of Christ closer to this nation and nations beyond. Help me to love Your commandments and fear You. Help me to love my neighbours and my brothers and sisters in Christ. Help us to be united in Christ, in one spirit, in full agreement and affirmation, to see the bigger picture You have in store for us in this nation and beyond. We love You and we commit ourselves and our beloved nation to You. Renew and empower us to live for You Lord. We pledge our allegiance to You, Our King and Master of the Most High. In the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, AMEN.
