GAME 1 vs GEORGE WASHINGTON THE MATCHUP Friday’s contest pits two of the nation’s top mid-major programs against each other to start the 2014-15 campaign. Both programs were recently mentioned in Graham Hays’ mid-major top-10 list with GW coming in third and the Eagles holding the sixth position.

ALL-TIME MEETINGS WITH GW The opening-day bout will be the second-ever meeting between the two teams as the Eagles defeated the Colonials 97-94 in a double-overtime tilt at Alico Arena as part of the 2009 WNIT.

POINTS SCORED

WINS

The team holds a 1-0 record against GW and scored 51 percent of the points in the last meeting.

LAST TIME AGAINST GW

SCOUTING THE VISITING TEAM • George Washington travels to Fort Myers to begin the 2014-15 campaign – its third under head coach Jonathan Tsipis. The Colonials went 23-11 a year ago with an 11-5 record in Atlantic 10 play to finish third in the league behind Dayton and Fordham. The team fell to Dayton in the A-10 Championship before winning two games in the WNIT. • The Eagles and Colonials have similar luck on opening night as GW is 7-1 in the last eight seasons in the first game of the year • This season, GW was selected to finish second in the league, behind only top-25 team Dayton. The Colonials return eight players from last year’s team including former First Team All-Conference honoree Jonquel Jones. Jones returns as the team’s top scorer, rebounder and shot blocker as the current junior scored 14.7 points per game, brought down 10.9 rebounds per game and swatted 44 shots as a sophomore. • The Colonials return just one other double-figure point contributor in former A-10 Rookie of the Year Caira Washington as the team lost two of its top three producers to graduation last season. Despite the losses, GW returns 74 percent of its scoring from last season when the team average 76.1 points per game.

The Eagles took two overtime periods to defeat George Washington 97-94 at Alico Arena on March 19, 2009 as part of the WNIT. Brittany Brown scored 25 points for the Green and Blue, including two free throws to end the game to push the Eagles to a second-round appearance in the WNIT.

• As a unit, the team shot 42 percent last season with a 30.5 mark from 3-point range. They outrebounded opponents by a margin of 6.5 to rank first in the A-10 and among the top 40 in the nation and recorded 9.1 steals per game.

The team ultimately fell to USF in overtime to end the 2008-09 season.

• The team finished last season with an RPI rating of 72 and ranks among this year’s top mid-major programs as released by ESPN’s Graham Hays.

LAST TIME OUT:

THE BREAKDOWN:

The 12th-seeded FGCU women’s basketball team scored just five points over the final 11:38, including overtime, to drop a heartbreaking 61-60 decision to 5th-seeded Oklahoma State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles’ season ended with a record of 26-8, while the Cowgirls advanced with a record of 24-8. A 14-4 run midway through the first half created a 10-point lead for FGCU, and the Eagles held a sixpoint edge, 55-49, following a Knight 3-pointer at the 6:38 mark. FGCU failed to score another point until Atwater produced a driving layup with 35 seconds left to tie the game at 57-57 and forced the Eagles’ second-straight overtime contest. Both teams struggled from the field in overtime, with FGCU’s lone bucket coming from a Cobb baseline 3-pointer to put it up one, 60-59, with 3:14 left. Neither team would score again until Oklahoma State converted an FGCU turnover into a layup at the other end with 40 seconds remaining to provide the winning margin. The Eagles had a chance to potentially win the game, but Cobb’s 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining from the same spot she had connected from earlier in overtime, just missed.

PROTECTING THE NEST When it comes to A-Sun play, there’s no tougher place to play than Alico Arena. The Eagles currently own a 56game win streak against conference opponents at home and hold a record of 66-1 in six seasons at Alico Arena. Overall, Alico was recently ranked as the second-toughest place to play in the nation. The team holds a record of 101-8 in Division I play at Alico for a win percentage of 92.6, second only to UConn’s Gampel Pavillion.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight returned to action last season after sitting out all of the 2012-13 season with an ACL injury. Knight excelled with a careerhigh 25 points and three blocks in the season opener at FIU and averaged 12.3 points per game with a team-high 93 blocks and 21 double-figure performances.

PRESEASON AWARDS The Eagles picked up numerous preseason awards with junior Whitney Knight leading the way. Knight was named the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, while senior Jenna Cobb and junior Stephanie Haas earned Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference nod. Head Coach Karl Smesko was again named the Preseason Coach of the Year by College Sports Madness to begin the year.

PREPPED FOR THE SIDELINE Several of Coach Smesko’s former players are now leading teams on the sidelines themselves. The 2014-15 squad’s staff alone includes three former players in Chelsea Dermyer, Chelsea Lyles and Joyce Iamstrong.

BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK: The Eagles won their fourth-straight Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championship with a win over Stetson last season. Through four years, the Eagles hold a conference record of 70-4 with just four losses. Although the chart below may look chaotic, one thing remains constant. FGCU stands at the top of the conference for the last four years.

HOT STREAK With 44 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles held the nation’s best conference win streak in conference action but saw the streak snapped at NKU last season.

SIMPLY THE BEST In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles set three separate 3-point records.

•350 made 3-pointers

•342 made 3-pointers

(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (Former NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)

(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)

The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.

SMESKO’S PREPERATION Smesko’s game preparation is one of the most crucial factors in the Eagles’ all-time success. Last season, the team went 14-3 in games when they had four or more days to prepare. In 12 seasons, Smesko holds a record of 108-21 in games with that much time for preparing for a win percentage of 84 percent.

THE HISTORY Despite just a 12-year presence, the FGCU women’s basketball team boasts a rich history. Led by 12th-year Head Coach Karl Smesko, the Eagles have produced a program record of 314-63 for a remarkable win percentage of 83 percent. Smesko has produced ten 20-win seasons since the program’s inception with two seasons that eclipsed the 30-win mark.

Since opening its doors in December 2002, Alico Arena has served as the centerpiece of FGCU athletics. In addition to the 4,500 seat basketball and volleyball facility, the arena houses Athletic Department staff offices, 12 locker rooms, a full suite of luxury boxes, a hospitality suite, the Human Performance Athletic Training Center, a fitness center and an auxiliary gym.

EAGLES AT ALICO

After playing for the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2007, the team joined the Division I ranks for the 2007-08 season. In their first year of Division I play, the Eagles won 29 games for the fourth most in NCAA history, while producing the third-highest winning percentage of a first-year team at 90.6. After a four-year transition period, the Eagles made the NCAA Tournament in their first year of postseason eligibility. Since making the transition to DI, the Eagles have compiled a record of 180-42 and have finished atop the Atlantic Sun standings four times in five years. In the last three seasons, the Eagles have lost just one Atlantic Sun game.

• 182-14 in home games • 180-14 in games at Alico Arena • 101-8 in Division I games at Alico Arena • 64-1 in Atlantic Sun games at Alico Arena ALICO FAST FACTS • The Eagles compiled a streak of 42 home wins between 2008 and 2011. SMESKO SAYS People are always interested in the starting lineup. I’m not so concerned as to which five kids are on the court when the game starts.

My biggest concern is which five kids are on the court in the final seconds. Which five kids are out there when it all comes down to that moment?

ALL IN

All 11 players that saw playing time last year put up points for the Eagles. Sarah Hansen led the team with 462 points on the year, while Bethany Murrell has recorded the fewest at 11 points.

20 WINS: THE STANDARD For the 10th-consecutive year, and 10th time in just 12 years, coach Karl Smesko and the Eagles constructed a 20+ win season last year

NONCONFERENCE COMPETITION

HITTING THE CENTURY MARK

The Green & Blue took on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. They went 6-6.

In 12 seasons, the Eagles have scored 100 points or more on 11 occasions. Since the transition to Division I, the team has hit the mark four times including once last season with a 108-67 ‘W’ over Lipscomb at home.

This season, the team will face teams from 13 different conferences. Let’s take a look.

TIME’S TICKING 2013-14 marked the first season in which a 10-second back court clock was utilized in NCAA women’s basketball. The Eagles were called with a 10-second violation ZERO times.

SMESKO’S OFFENSE The Eagles run a motion offense with five equal parts constantly moving to create the best shots. Don’t be surprised to see five ‘G’s in the starting lineup as 12 of 16 players are listed as guards.
