TRENDING TODAY AT #FGCU
• FGCU is looking for a 4-0 start to the season. The current start is the best since 2013-14, and a win today would give the Eagles the second best start to a season in the Division-I era behind the 2010-11 team that started 14-0.

SENIOR STEPH HAAS HAS AVERAGED 12 POINTS PER GAME IN FIVE WNIT CONTESTS AND SET A NEW SEASON HIGH ON TWO OCCASIONS
GAME ONE THE MATCHUP Today’s tilt will be just the second ever between FGCU and Akron. The Eagles topped the Zips 82-64 in Akron on Nov. 21, 2015. In that game, current seniors Taylor Gradinjan and Jessica Cattani had nine and six points, respectively. Former player turned video coordinator/ assistant coach Stephanie Haas recorded 12 points.
LAST TIME OUT FGCU scored 55 first half points to pick up an 80-62 win over Kent State on Friday. Despite having three players foul out in the second half, the Eagles are now off to a 3-0 start to the season for the first time since 2013-14. Another win would give the team the second best start in the Division-I era behind the 2010-11 team’s 14-0 start. For FGCU, Nasrin Ulel continues to impress offensively through the first three games of the season. The sophomore, who averaged 3.8 points per game as a freshman, now checks in at 21.0 per contest - nearly three times as many points per game as minutes per game she averaged last year.
SCOUTING AKRON Akron, led by the program’s all-time winningest coach Jodi Kest, returns starters Shaunay Edmonds, a sophomore guard, Haliegh Reinoehl, a sophomore forward, and Caitlin Vari, a sophomore forward. Seniors Greta Burry and Lauren Hung, along with junior Megan Sefcik also return.
Edmonds was the team’s starting point guard last year and averaged 7.7 points, four assists and two steals per game. Reinoehl came off the bench the first 13 games, but moved into the starting lineup the rest of the way. She led the team with 5.4 rebounds per game, while averaging 4.1 points. Vari shot 45.8 percent from the field, while Burry averaged 5.4 points and 5.2 rebounds while leading the team in field goal percentage at 50.4. Sefcik averaged 7.9 points. The program welcomed freshmen Kynnedy Azubike, Sarah Leyendecker and Destiny Perkins this year. Sefcik led Akron in scoring in the team’s 63-52 season-opening loss against Bucknell on Tuesday. Akron enters the game 1-1 after a 66-54 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Friday. In that game, Reinoehl totaled a career-high 21 points and added 11 rebounds to pick up her first career double-double. Edmonds added 16 points, four assists and three rebounds. Burry chipped in 10 rebounds.
PROJECTED STARTERS FOR AKRON Based on its starting lineup against Southeastern Louisiana, the Zips are projected to start Haliegh Reinoehl and Greta Burry at forward along with the guard trio of Shaunay Edmonds, Shayna Harmon and Megan Sefcik.

AUSTRIAN WEAPON In addition to returning 1,737 points from last year’s team, FGCU head coach Karl Smesko has added Vienna, Austria native Lisa Zderadicka to the roster. The 5-6 guard led Houston Baptist with 11 points per game last year (276 total points). Thus, with her addition, the Eagles have over 2,000 NCAA Division I points from last year available. In addition to her scoring, Zderadicka averaged 4.5 rebounds last year, which was second on the team at Houston Baptist and would have tied China Dow for second on the FGCU roster last year behind Tytionia Adderly.
NEXT UP IN THE NEST On top of Zderadicka, FGCU added three transfers who will sit out this year due to NCAA Division I transfer rules who either led their school in scoring or finished in the top three last year. Davion Wingate tied for the team-high in scoring at 11.8 PPG for Stony Brook; Keri Jewett-Giles tallied 9.0 PPG for Southern Miss; and Kerstie Phills poured in a team-high 13.1 PPG for Wagner en route to NEC Rookie of the Year recognition. Kerstie is the daughter of the late Bobby Phills, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets.
UPPERCLASSMEN PRESENCE Among eligible players, this year’s roster features six upperclassmen, including five seniors and one junior. Taylor Gradinjan is the elder statesman on the team with this being her sixth year following two ACL tears to start her career. Jessica Cattani and China Dow are both fifth-year seniors, while Erica Nelson and Rose Julien are in their second season at FGCU following two years at Johnson County CC and Chipola College, respectively, and each player won an NJCAA national title. Lisa Zderadicka, who is a graduate transfer from Houston Baptist, is a fourth-year junior.
game slate in Las Vegas for the Play4Kay Shootout, is Nov. 23-25. The road stretch concludes Dec. 3 in Texas against Abilene Christian.
CONSISTENT SUCCESS FGCU is just one of six programs at the NCAA Division I level to win 25 or more games in each season since 2010-11. The others include: UConn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Stanford and James Madison. Only 10 schools have at least 25 wins in each of the past four seasons.
OVERTIME HISTORY FGCU is 6-6 all-time in the NCAA Division I era in overtime games. Three of those games have come against Stetson, and the Eagles hold a 2-1 record in those. The most recent overtime game was a 74-67 loss to Stetson on Feb. 25, 2017.

Also, FGCU is one of eight teams in the Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas. Including the Eagles, there are six teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year in it including Ohio State, Stanford, Gonzaga, Belmont and DePaul (FGCU’s opening round opponent).
Alico Arena stands as the second toughest place to play in all of NCAA Division I women’s basketball. The first? UConn’s Gampel Pavilion.
