TRENDING @FGCU_WBB - The 2018-19 season represents FGCU’s 17th with collegiate women’s basketball, including just the 12th in Division-I play and the 8th with postseason eligibility. The Green and Blue have either made the NCAA Tournament or WNIT in each year of its D-I existence. - Head coach Karl Smesko, with a staff comprised of all former FGCU players, entered this year with a 496-114 record (.813), which ranks him as the 3rd winningest active D-I head coach behind Geno Auriemma (1,027-136, .883) and Kim Mulkey (539-98, .846). He passed Tara VanDerveer (1,036-242, .811) last year to become the 5th-winningest of all-time and ranks among the top 20 winningest coaches all-time across all divisions. - Over the past four seasons, Smesko guided FGCU to 121 wins, which is the most among all mid-majors and seventh-most among any Division-I program – behind UConn (148), Notre Dame (137), Baylor (135), South Carolina (129), Mississippi State (126) and Maryland (123). On top of that, the program is one of only six Division-I teams with three 30-win seasons during that stretch – joining UConn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Maryland and South Carolina. - Smesko has produced a level of sustained success matched by few others as he has guided the Eagles to eight-straight 25-win seasons and 14-straight 20-win seasons. FGCU The FGCU women’s basketball team has averaged 99.5 PPG over the past two is also one of only four schools in the nation to have both women’s and men’s basketball victories. Their 100-point effort against FIU was the program’s 16th all-time teams win at least 20 games in six-straight seasons – joining Duke, Louisville and Saint game with 100 or more points. Mary’s.

NEXT UP IN THE NEST Similar to last year when FGCU had four Division-I transfers sit out, the Eagles added two more high-level transfers who will play a large role in the program’s future in Emma List (Albany) and Anja Marinkovic (Detroit). List, a 5-10 lefty guard, scored in 26 of 32 games for Albany in 2017-18. She had four points and three steals in her collegiate debut against No. 15/13 Maryland and a season-high 12 points along with three steals on Dec. 3 against Holy Cross. Marinkovic, a 5-8 guard, will have two years of eligibility left. The former Horizon League All-Freshman Team selection finished her career at Detroit Mercy ranked among the top 15 in program history in 3-point field goals made (107) and 3-point field goal percentage (34.7) - while checking in third all-time in freethrow percentage (87-for-108, 80.6 percent).

OVERTIME HISTORY FGCU is 7-6 all-time in the NCAA Division-I era in overtime games following the 89-84 win over No. 21 DePaul on Nov. 23, 2017. That win also represented the team’s first win over a ranked opponent in program history, and it was the first of three wins over ranked teams for the FGCU in 2017-18 (DePaul, Kentucky, Missouri). ASUN SUCCESS

BIG DOGS IN SWFL

FGCU joined the ASUN for the 2007-08 season and immediately saw success among the ranks. The team has now won 8 of the past 11 regular-season championships with a record of 170-16 over that span. The Eagles have never finished lower than second in the final standings and maintains a 90-2 record in ASUN games played at Alico Arena. Since earning postseason eligibility during the 2011-12 season, the Eagles have won five of seven ASUN tournament championships. The Eagles defeated Jacksonville in last year’s title game.

FGCU has previously hosted 12 teams from a Power 5 conference including Illinois, Michigan, Wake Forest, Auburn, Virginia, Virginia Tech, LSU, Michigan State, Indiana, Florida State and Florida. Of those 12 previous contests, the Eagles earned wins in 10 - defeating Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Auburn, VT, LSU, Michigan State, Florida and Indiana.

SMESKO’S PREPARATION Head coach Karl Smesko’s game preparation is one of the most crucial factors in the Eagles’ all-time success. Overall, in 16+ seasons, Smesko holds a record of 16328 (.853) in games where he has four or more days to prepare.

BIG TIME Smesko, who earned his 400th career victory on Feb. 21, 2015 with a win over USC Upstate, is now two wins away from 500. He won his 400th in just 493 games. That’s two faster than legend Geno Auriemma. In his 19th year overall and 16th at FGCU, he has compiled a 498-115 record. In fact, by winning .812 percent of his games, he is one of just four active coaches at the NCAA Division I level with at least an .800 career winning percentage - joining UConn’s Geno Auriemma, Baylor’s Kim Mulkey and Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer.

CLUTCH DNA Kerstie Phills (Bobby) and Davion (David) Wingate are the daughters of former NBA stars. The late Bobby Phills played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets, while David Wingate won an NCAA title at Georgetown and played 15 years in the NBA with six teams.

POWERFUL WINS FGCU has secured a win over at least one team from each of the Power 5 conferences including: ACC: Wake Forest (‘16) Clemson (‘14), VT (‘10, 11, 12) Big 10: Illinois (‘17), Michigan (‘16), Michigan State (‘11), Indiana (‘10) Big 12: Oklahoma State (‘15) SEC: Kentucky (‘17), Auburn (‘15), LSU (‘12), Florida (‘08), Missouri (‘18) Pac 12: Arizona (‘15)

RARE AIR FGCU is just one of four programs at the NCAA Division I level to win 25 or more games in each season since 2010-11. The others include: UConn, Baylor and Notre Dame. Stanford and James Madison fell off last year.

DOUBLE THE PLEASURE Tytionia Adderly has now produced nine career double-doubles, which is third most in the Division-I era behind Sarah Hansen (20) and Whitney Knight (19). The overall leader is Robyn Swain, who had 28 from 200204 in the first two seasons of the program. An interesting fact in the history of FGCU double-doubles is that three current assistant coaches produced double-doubles in the Green and Blue - Chelsea Lyles (4), Jenna Cobb (1), and Chelsea (Dermyer) Banbury (1). Cobb (Ohio State, Nov. 29, 2014) and Lyles (Miami, March 18, 2010) each produced one against a high-major Division-I.

WINNING STREAK SNAPPED FGCU, which carried a seven-game regular season winning streak dating back to Feb. 3, 2018, had it snapped in this year’s season-opening loss to South Dakota State.

BACK FOR MORE A total of 23 FGCU teams have advanced to the most prestigious tournament of the Division I level. Here is the full list. Those who earned a win are indicated with an asterisk. Women’s Soccer: 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015*, 2016, 2017 Men’s Soccer: 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016* Women’s Basketball: 2012, 2014, 2015*, 2017, 2018* Men’s Basketball: 2013*, 2016, 2017 Softball: 2012* Baseball: 2017* Men’s Tennis: 2015, 2017 Volleyball: 2018

GOING STREAKING

FGCU IN THE POLLS

Since taking over as FGCU’s head coach, Smesko has guided the program to 14 winning streaks lasting at least 10 games, led by a 34-game streak from Nov. 16, 2006 to March 22, 2007. The top Division-I era winning streak is 26 games from Dec. 6, 2014 to March 21, 2015.

AP, COACHES At FGCU, Smesko has led his teams to national rankings in 2014-15 and 2017-18.

MID-MAJOR In 2017-18, the Eagles were ranked atop the CollegeInsider. com and espnW mid-major polls at the same time for the first time since March 2016. The team spent four weeks atop the espnW mid-major bi-weekly poll (Jan. 10, Jan. 24) and five weeks atop the CollegeInsider.com poll (Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31).

In terms of regular season winning streaks, Smesko’s longest is a 45-game stretch from Dec. 29, 2005 through March 3, 2007. The streak encompassed the final two seasons of the program’s Division-II era. 45 games – 12/29/05 to 03/03/07 23 games – 12/06/14 to 11/13/15 22 games – 12/28/12 to 11/20/13 20 games – 12/29/11 to 11/14/12 19 games – 12/20/15 to 02/27/16 17 games – 01/10/09 to 11/13/09 11 games – 02/06/14 to 11/18/14

In 2014-15, the team spent the final five weeks in the AP Poll, rising as high as No. 20 in the final three. They also rose as high as No. 21 in the final four Coaches Polls. Then, in 2017-18, the team was ranked twice in the Coaches Poll – Feb. 1 and April 2, which was the final poll of the season.

WBCA As a Division-II program, FGCU was first ranked by the WBCA in December 2005 and ranked the rest of the Division-II era that ran through 2006-07. In that final D-II year, the team earned its first No. 1 ranking in early February and spent the rest of the season atop the poll. AS RANKED, AGAINST RANKED As a ranked team, Smesko has guided FGCU to a 62-5 record, including a 9-2 mark in Division-I play. As a Division-II program, he compiled a 53-3 mark as a ranked team. Smesko led FGCU to its first Division-I era win over a ranked team with an 89-84 overtime victory over No. 21 DePaul on Nov. 23, 2017. As the season ensued, the team knocked off two more ranked teams – No. 20/23 Kentucky on Dec. 8 and No. 17/15 Missouri on March 17 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to 2007-08, he led the Green and Blue to a 9-2 record against ranked teams. In fact, he led the team to a 75-58 win over No. 18 Ohio Dominican in the program’s very first game on Nov. 22, 2002.

RAINING THREES Smesko has turned FGCU into one of the premier 3-point shooting teams in the nation. In 16 + seasons, his team has made at least one 3-point field goal in 412 straight games and went without at least one made in only one game in program history – Feb. 21, 2006 vs Lynn University (0-for-11). In 2017-18, the Green and Blue made an NCAA Division-I single season record 431 3-pointers on 1,190 attempts, equating out to a .362 percentage. In doing so, the team made and attempted over twice as many as they did in the program’s initial season in 2002-03 (212-for-535). Since that first year, FGCU has made at least 300 in a season 10 times, including each of the past nine seasons. 3-POINT SHOOTING BY SEASON 2002-03 --- 212-for-535 (.396) 2003-04 --- 118-for-406 (.291) 2004-05 --- 253-for-722 (.350) 2005-06 --- 242-for-747 (.324) 2006-07 --- 337-for-891 (.378) 2007-08 --- 255-for-734 (.347) 2008-09 --- 296-for-763 (.388) 2009-10 --- 317-for-876 (.362) 2010-11 --- 350-for-940 (.372) 2011-12 --- 342-for-925 (.370) 2012-13 --- 319-for-974 (.328) 2013-14 --- 347-for-1,000 (.347) 2014-15 --- 327-for-928 (.352) 2015-16 --- 372-for-1,194 (.312) 2016-17 --- 338-for-1,058 (.319) 2017-18 --- 431-for-1,190 (.362) 2018-19 ---39-for-113 (.345) TOTALS: 4,895-for-14,030 (.349) FGCU has made at least 10 or more 3-point field goals in a single game 240 times, including a single-season record 25 times in 2017-18 and all three games this year. gram’s seven games all-time with at least 20 or more. The program’s single-game record of 22 was initially set on Jan. 12, 2013 in a 97-60 win over ETSU (22-for-43) on the road. Last year’s team tied the mark at Abilene Christian (22-for-45) on Dec. 3 and at home against Lipscomb (22-for-44) on March 7. The latter represents the program’s postseason mark, and they now own three of the top five single-game totals in NCAA Division-I history. Entering this season, there has been only 22 times since 1988 that an NCAA Division-I team had made at least 20 3-point field goals in a game, and FGCU now owns seven of those 22. The Eagles have attempted at least 1,000 3-point field goals in three consecutive seasons, becoming just the second program in NCAA Division-I history to do so along with Sacramento State, who did it four straight seasons from 2013-17. Prior to breaking the single-season record for made 3-point field goals last year, FGCU claimed a then single-season NCAA record 342 in 2011-12, which was the first year they were eligible for NCAA statistical championships. Had they been eligible in 2010-11, they also would have led the nation with 350 – 26 more than the second place team. The 2009-10 team would have finished second. In fact, over the past seven years, the Green and Blue have finished among the nation’s top five in made 3-point field goals every year. FGCU 3-POINT FGs MADE (NCAA DIVISION-I FINISH) 2011-12 – 342, 1st 2012-13 – 319, 3rd 2013-14 – 347, 2nd 2014-15 – 327, 5th 2015-16 – 372, 2nd 2016-17 – 338, 3rd 2017-18 – 431, 1st 2018-19 - 39, (currently 29th) In addition to the aforementioned record, the 2011-12 team also set the NCAA single season record for most 3-point field goals made per game at 10.7, and they followed it up in 201213 by making 9.4 per game, which was the most in the nation. The 2013-14 team joined Sacramento State as the first two teams to attempt 1,000 in a season. In 2017-18, FGCU joined DePaul as the first two teams to eclipse 400 made 3-point field goals in a season in NCAA Division-I history. In fact, the Eagles stood out in the deepest 3-point shooting year all-time as eight teams averaged 10 or more made per game, which is equal to the total from the past two seasons combined and the same as 2009-15 combined. Among the 13 teams to average at least 10 or more made per game over a single season, FGCU is one of just four to do it at least three times – joining Sacramento State, Idaho and Saint Francis. Since become a full-fledged Division-I in 2011-12, FGCU has made 2,515 3-point field goals. Since joining the ASUN, the team has made 1,904-for-5,369 (.355) in conference play alone.

GREATNESS ON THE SIDELINES Entering the 2018-19 season, Karl Smesko compiled a 496114 record (.813), which ranked him as the third winningest active Division-I head coach behind Geno Auriemma (1,027136, .883) and Kim Mulkey (539-98, .846). Furthermore, he passed Tara VanDerveer (1,036-242, .811) last year to become the fifth winningest head coach of all-time – behind Auriemma, Leon Barmore (576-87, .869), Mulkey and Pat Summitt (1,098-208, .841). If that isn’t enough, he ranks among the top 20 winningest coaches all-time across all divisions.

25-win seasons and 14-straight 20-win seasons. FGCU is also one of only four schools in the nation to have both basketball teams win at least 20 games in six-straight seasons – joining Duke, Louisville and Saint Mary’s.

Looking ahead, Smesko has his program on pace to become Division-I’s all-time leader in winning percentage by the end of 2019-20. The NCAA ranks teams by percentage with a minimum of 10 years and 350 victories as a Division I institution. Thus, FGCU (303-66, .821 as a Division-I program entering 2018-19) is on pace to become No. 1 all-time once they eclipse the 350 win threshold. The only other team that currently holds an .800 or above percentage is Tennessee (1,344-319, .808). Over the past four seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to 121 wins, which is the most among all mid-majors and seventh-most among any Division-I program – behind UConn (148), Notre Dame (137), Baylor (135), South Carolina (129), Mississippi State (126) and Maryland (123). On top of that, the program is one of only six Division-I teams with three 30-win seasons during that stretch – joining UConn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Maryland and South Carolina. Smesko has produced a level of sustained success matched by few others as he has guided the Eagles to eight-straight
