GAME SEVEN GREEN AND BLUE FGCU is coming off an 89-84 overtime upset of No. 21 DePaul in the Play4Kay Showcase quarterfinals on Thursday. With the win, the Eagles are now 6-0 this year and improved to 7-6 all-time in the Division-I era in overtime games. Offensively, China Dow poured in a game and season-high 26 points against DePaul while adding nine rebounds, three steals and one assist. She finished 6-for-11 from the field and 14-for-15 from the foul line. With that performance, she tied Sarah Hansen (LSU Dec. 28, 2012) for the program’s second most made FTs in a single game during the Division-I era. Rosemarie Julien assisted Dow with 22 points, three rebounds and two steals. She made several crucial baskets for the Eagles down the stretch and finished 10-for-11 from the foul line. Her scoring output fell just two shy of her season-high. Lisa Zderadicka, who made a driving layup with her left hand with 32 seconds left in overtime to give FGCU a three-point lead, fell just one shy of her season-high in scoring while finishing with 12 points and two assists. Tytionia Adderly just missed a double-double, but recorded 11 points and tied Dow for the team-high in rebounds with nine. Outside of those four, Erica Nelson (8), Taylor Gradinjan
(5) and Nasrin Ulel (5) combined for 18 points to round out the team’s scoring. Nelson also fell just one shy of tying her season-high in scoring, while Gradinjan and Zderadicka made the team’s lone two 3-pointers as FGCU recorded a season-high 48 points in the paint. FGCU’s 6-0 start is the second best start in program history at the Division-I level behind the 2010-11 team’s 14-0 start.
AGAINST THE B1G With a victory today, FGCU would improve to 5-4 all-time against the Big 10. The team evened its record up with a season-opening win over Illinois, and the Eagles hold a 4-4 record all-time with wins over Illinois (85-61), Michigan (71-62 in WNIT semifinals on March 31, 2016), Michigan State (59-58, Nov. 19, 2011) and Indiana (7369 on Dec. 21, 2010). None of those wins have come away from Alico Arena, though.
LOOKING AHEAD The winner of this game will meet either Stanford or Belmont in Saturday’s championship at 11 p.m. ET. The loser will meet the loser of that other semifinal in the third place game at 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. All tournament games are being held at the Mandalay Bay Event Center.

AUSTRIAN WEAPON In addition to returning 1,737 points from last year’s team, FGCU head coach Karl Smesko has added Vienna, Austria native Lisa Zderadicka to the roster. The 5-6 guard led Houston Baptist with 11 points per game last year (276 total points). Thus, with her addition, the Eagles have over 2,000 NCAA Division I points from last year available. In addition to her scoring, Zderadicka averaged 4.5 rebounds last year, which was second on the team at Houston Baptist and would have tied China Dow for second on the FGCU roster last year behind Tytionia Adderly.
NEXT UP IN THE NEST On top of Zderadicka, FGCU added three transfers who will sit out this year due to NCAA Division I transfer rules who either led their school in scoring or finished in the top three last year. Davion Wingate tied for the team-high in scoring at 11.8 PPG for Stony Brook; Keri Jewett-Giles tallied 9.0 PPG for Southern Miss; and Kerstie Phills poured in a team-high 13.1 PPG for Wagner en route to NEC Rookie of the Year recognition. Kerstie is the daughter of the late Bobby Phills, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets.
UPPERCLASSMEN PRESENCE Among eligible players, this year’s roster features six upperclassmen, including five seniors and one junior. Taylor Gradinjan is the elder statesman on the team with this being her sixth year following two ACL tears to start her career. Jessica Cattani and China Dow are both fifth-year seniors, while Erica Nelson and Rose Julien are in their second season at FGCU following two years at Johnson County CC and Chipola College, respectively, and each player won an NJCAA national title. Lisa Zderadicka, who is a graduate transfer from Houston Baptist, is a fourth-year junior.
Shootout, is Nov. 23-25. The road stretch concludes Dec. 3 in Texas against Abilene Christian.
CONSISTENT SUCCESS FGCU is just one of six programs at the NCAA Division I level to win 25 or more games in each season since 2010-11. The others include: UConn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Stanford and James Madison. Only 10 schools have at least 25 wins in each of the past four seasons.
OVERTIME HISTORY FGCU is now 7-6 all-time in the NCAA Division-I era in overtime games following the 89-84 win over No. 21 DePaul on Nov. 23. Three of those games have come against Stetson, and the Eagles hold a 2-1 record in those. DATE

COLLEN LANDS WNBA GIG
There is only nine schools that had 26 or more wins in both their women’s and men’s basketball programs in 2016-17, and FGCU was one of them. The others? South Carolina, Baylor, Notre Dame, Duke, Florida State, Gonzaga, Michigan and Bucknell.
Nicki Collen, a former FGCU assistant coach in 2014-15 and 2015-16, was named head coach of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream in October 2017. Following her time at FGCU, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Connecticut Sun.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
PROTECTING THE NEST
The 2017-18 schedule potentially boasts 11 2016-17 postseason teams with seven that made The Dance and six that played in the WNIT. The guaranteed opponents that made the NCAA Tournament last year include Chattanooga, DePaul and Kentucky, while the WNIT teams include South Dakota State, Kent State, Abilene Christian, Harvard, Jacksonville and Stetson. Also, FGCU is one of eight teams in the Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas. Including the Eagles, there are six teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year in it including Ohio State, Stanford, Gonzaga, Belmont and DePaul (FGCU’s opening round opponent).
Alico Arena stands as the second toughest place to play in all of NCAA Division I women’s basketball. The first? UConn’s Gampel Pavilion. The Eagles hold a record of 153-12 at home since making the jump to Division I in 2007-08 and have won 87 of 90 Atlantic Sun Conference games with the home crowd behind them.
SUNSHINE-STATE SERIES The Eagles hold an impressive record of 143-23 against in-state opponents through 15+ seasons. The team went 11-3 against Sunshine State foes last season and FGCU is scheduled to face 10 Florida teams in this year’s regular season.
PREPPED FOR THE SIDELINE The ‘Coach Smesko Coaching Tree’ grows bigger each year with a strong group of former players and/ or assistants now among the coaching ranks. On the FGCU sideline alone you’ll nothing but former players: Chelsea Banbury ’07, Chelsea Lyles ’10, Jenna Cobb ’15, Stephanie Haas ‘16 and Amanda Pierce ‘08. Kate (Schrader) Bruce ’07 was on staff at Ohio, but is now the head coach at Walsh University where Jenn Conely ‘07 is in her first year as an assistant. Shannon Murphy ’07 is an assistant at Embry Riddle, and Jaime Gluesing is on staff at Milwaukee. Brittany Brown ’10 is the head coach at Community College of Rhode Island. Additionally, former assistants Bob Bolden and LeAnn (Freeland) Curry now hold head coaching positions at Ohio University and Nova Southeastern, respectively.

The team has won six of the past seven regular-season championships with a record of 108-6 over that span. The Eagles have won seven total regular-season championships and have never finished lower than second in the final conference standings. FGCU holds a record of 157-15 all-time in conference games and maintains a 87-3 record in A-Sun games played at Alico Arena.
