POINTS SCORED

WINS

LAST TIME AT PARADISE JAM 2014 marks the Eagles second trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands in three seasons. FGCU went 1-2 in 2012’s tournament with a narrow loss to DePaul, a defeat at the hands of South Carolina and a win over Hampton. That season, the Eagles finished the year at 27-7 with a perfect 18-0 Atlantic Sun record.

SCOUTING WICHITA STATE • Wichita State enters the tournament with a record of 2-1 this season with wins over Creighton and UT-Arlington. The Shockers finished last year with a mark of 26-7 and earned their second-straight Missouri Valley Championship with a trip to the 2014 NCAA tournament. The team ranked among the nation’s top-25 for one week in February and returns four starters from last year’s squad. • The MVC preseason favorite is currently averaging 64.7 points per game, three points fewer than opponents with a shooting percentage of 42.3 from the field. The Shockers average 4.7 made baskets from 3-point range with a 36.8 percent clip from beyondthe-arc and pull down 33.3 rebounds per game. • Individually, the Shockers are led by three players averaging double figures. Alex Harden, last year’s MVC Defensive Player of the Year, paces the team with 18.0 points per game, while Michaela Dapperich and Jamillah Bonner add 17.3 and 14.0, respectively. Dapperich has shot 52.3 percent from the field this season, while Harden leads the team with 16 steals and 2.7 assists per game. Bonner has seen action in only two of the team’s three games, but paces the unit with 8.0 boards per contest. • Head Coach Jody Adams is in her seventh season with the Shockers. Under Adam’s directions, WSU reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2013, and agian in 2014, while recording the program’s first-ever regular and post-season Missouri Valley Conference championships in both seasons.

As freshmen, this year’s junior class contributed 39 percent of the team’s scoring in the tournament. Check out the breakdown of the team’s last appearance in the U.S. Virgin Islands -

After holding a 57-17 lead at the break, the Eagles produced a strong shooting percentage in the second half to maintain the lead and ultimately earned a 102-54 win. Redshirt-freshman Taylor Gradinjan paced the Eagles with a career-high 16 points. Freshman Haley Laughter also produced a career-high with 13 points in just 15 minutes on the floor. Laughter made 6-of-9 shots and pulled down five boards for the Green and Blue. VARIETY Head Coach Karl Smesko used 211 different variations of players on the court last season with just four different starting lineups.

FIRST-TIME MEETINGS The Eagles hold an all-time record of 100-35 in first meetings with new opponents. The team will see 11 new faces this season, including Sunday night’s game against Ave Maria.

A MID-MAJOR MARK

MOORE IS MORE

After finishing the season at no. 10, FGCU started the season at the no. 11 position on the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll before jumping to the no. 5 position in the two latest polls. 1. JMU 6. UALR 2. Gonzaga 7. Wichita State 3. Green Bay 8. Albany 4. Princeton 9. Chattanooga 5. FGCU 10. Central Michigan

Amanda Moore consistently came through in the clutch last season. Although she averaged just 4.7 ppg, in the final 5 minutes she went 6-for-6 from the FT line and averaged 2.7 points per game.

ESPN’s Graham Hays released his list of top mid-major programs on Nov. 12. Hays put the Eagles among the top-10, coming in sixth on the list of tremendous teams. 1. Dayton 2. Western Kentucky 3. George Washington 4. Green Bay 5. Wichita State 6. FGCU 7. Gonzaga 8. Middle Tennessee State 9. Marist 10. Colorado State

BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK: The Eagles won their fourth-straight Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championship with a win over Stetson last season. Through four years, the Eagles hold a conference record of 70-4 with just four losses. Although the chart below may look chaotic, one thing remains constant. FGCU stands at the top of the conference for the last four years.

HOT STREAK With 44 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles held the nation’s best conference win streak in conference action but saw the streak snapped at NKU last season.

SIMPLY THE BEST In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles set three separate 3-point records.

•350 made 3-pointers

•342 made 3-pointers

(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (Former NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)

(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)

The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.

SMESKO’S PREPERATION Smesko’s game preparation is one of the most crucial factors in the Eagles’ all-time success. Last season, the team went 14-2 in games when they had four or more days to prepare. In 12+ seasons, Smesko holds a record of 109-20 in games with that much time for preparing for a win percentage of 84.3 percent.

DOUBLE DUTY Nine different players have scored at least 10 points in at least one game so far this season, with four currently averaging double-figures.

THE HISTORY Despite just a 12-year presence, the FGCU women’s basketball team boasts a rich history. Led by 12th-year Head Coach Karl Smesko, the Eagles have produced a program record of 314-63 for a remarkable win percentage of 83 percent. Smesko has produced ten 20-win seasons since the program’s inception with two seasons that eclipsed the 30-win mark.

Since opening its doors in December 2002, Alico Arena has served as the centerpiece of FGCU athletics. In addition to the 4,500 seat basketball and volleyball facility, the arena houses Athletic Department staff offices, 12 locker rooms, a full suite of luxury boxes, a hospitality suite, the Human Performance Athletic Training Center, a fitness center and an auxiliary gym.

EAGLES AT ALICO

After playing for the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2007, the team joined the Division I ranks for the 2007-08 season. In their first year of Division I play, the Eagles won 29 games for the fourth most in NCAA history, while producing the third-highest winning percentage of a first-year team at 90.6. After a four-year transition period, the Eagles made the NCAA Tournament in their first year of postseason eligibility. Since making the transition to DI, the Eagles have compiled a record of 180-42 and have finished atop the Atlantic Sun standings four times in five years. In the last three seasons, the Eagles have lost just one Atlantic Sun game.

SMESKO SAYS People are always interested in the starting lineup. I’m not so concerned as to which five kids are on the court when the game starts.

My biggest concern is which five kids are on the court in the final seconds. Which five kids are out there when it all comes down to that moment?

NONCONFERENCE COMPETITION

HITTING THE CENTURY MARK

The Green & Blue took on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. They went 6-6.

In 12+ seasons, the Eagles have scored 100 points or more on 12 occasions. Since the transition to Division I, the team has hit the mark five times including Sunday’s 102-54 win over Ave Maria

This season, the team will face teams from 13 different conferences. Let’s take a look.

TIME’S TICKING 2013-14 marked the first season in which a 10-second back court clock was utilized in NCAA women’s basketball. The Eagles were called with a 10-second violation ZERO times last season.

#HASHTAG SMESKO’S OFFENSE The Eagles run a motion offense with five equal parts constantly moving to create the best shots. Don’t be surprised to see five ‘G’s in the starting lineup as 12 of 16 players are listed as guards.
