GAME 9 | PROVIDENCE THE MATCHUP In the second game of a two-game homestand, the Eagles welcome Providence College to Alico Arena Thursday night.

ALL-TIME MEETINGS WITH FRIARS FGCU meets the Friars for the first time in program history. Providence becomes the Eagles’ 139th all-time opponent as the team enters the contest with a record of 102-36 in first-time meetings.

LAST TIME V. THE BIG EAST The Eagles have faced a Big East team in three of the last four seasons with a neutral matchup against DePaul and a home-and-home with Seton Hall. Both teams earned wins on their home courts, while the Eagles fell to DePaul narrowly in the 2012 Paradise Jam. Here’s the breakdown of the 60-58 loss to the Blue Demons in the last Big East pairing. Overall, the team is 2-3 against the classic basketball conference.

SCOUTING THE VISITING TEAM - The Friars fly south the Alico Arena with a 3-6 overall record after winning its lone conference game against Villanova on Dec. 3. Providence is still searching for its first victory on the road, having lost its previous four trips away from its home court of Alumni Hall. The Friars were picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST preseason poll, despite recording just seven wins 2013-14 and finishing 10th in the BIG EAST standings. - PC senior Alexis Harris was one of 10 players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team while sophomore point guard Sarah Beal was an Honorable Mention selection. Tori Rule leads the club in scoring, averaging 14.9 points per game while her 18 total steals is also a team best. Rule is Providence’s biggest deep threat, having converted 17-of-57 3-pointers and shooting 42.4 percent from the floor. Harris is second in scoring, logging 14.1 points per game and touts the Friars’ best shooting percentage of 49.6. Harris is also second on the team in total rebounds, pulling down eight boards per game while Chanise Baldwin’s mark of 73 rebounds stands as a team best. Baldwin is fourth in scoring with 7.4 points per game and has chipped in with nine steals and nine blocks. Beal is PC’s primary distributor, handing out 44 as-sists on the season while turning in the Friars’ third-best scoring clip of 9.8 points per game. - As a team, Providence is averaging 63.2 points per game while its oppo-nents are producing 66.8. From the field, the Friars convert at a clip of 40.3 percent while their foes are successfully scoring at a rate of 43.9 per-cent. Providence is strong on the glass, possessing a +1.6 rebounding mar-gin over its opponent, pulling down 37.7 rebounds per game. From behind the arc, Providence has sank 32-of-144 3-point attempts for an average of 3.6 per game.

Betsy Adamss cored a game-high 21 points as the team shook off a slow start but fell to DePaul, 60-58, in the first game of the Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands. The Eagles knocked down 7-of-31 shots from behind the arc. Three different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, led by Adams’ 5-of-16 night. Adams led the Eagles with 21 points, two rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes. Sarah Hansen registered her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. Gradinjan chipped in with eight points in just six minutes.

2

- Susa Robinson Fruchtl, a former All-America selection and Penn State’s only recipient of the Wade Trophy, is in her third year at the helm of Providence’s program. At Providence, Robinson Fruchtl has posted a win-loss to-tal of 17-52 (.264) and for her career, she is 91-135 (.403). Prior to Provi-dence, Robinson Fruchtl mounted a 74-83 (.471) mark at Saint Francis University.

LAST TIME OUT:

In its first game after a double-overtime loss to Ohio State, the FGCU women’s basketball team defeated Southern Mississippi 78-62 Saturday night at Alico Arena. The Eagles saw career-high scoring from Taylor Gradinjan and Kaneisha Atwater en route to their sixth win of the season and moved to 6-2 with the victory. The Golden Eagles of USM fall to 6-2 on the year with the all-time series now tied at one each.

THE BREAKDOWN:

After a close battle in the opening minutes of the game, the Eagles produced a 17-point run that spanned six minutes to take control of the game. With nine made shots from the perimeter, the Eagles endured the Southern Miss. defensive pressure and went into the break with a 39-27 lead. The visitors outshot the Eagles from the field in the second half, but led by Gradinjan and Atwater, the Green and Blue maintained its point production and ultimately extended the lead to 17 points. The win marked the Eagles’ 15th-straight victory at Alico Arena. As a unit, the Eagles outshot Southern Miss. narrowly, 39.2 percent to 37.9 percent, but produced greater shots from the perimeter with a 12-5 advantage from beyond-the-arc. The Green and Blue was outrebounded 40-37 but held the advantage defensively with a 27-26 defensive board margin and 19 forced turnovers. The Eagles capitalized heavily on USM miscues, with 28 points on turnovers and also added 17 secondchance points. Despite heavy defensive pressure from the Golden Eagles, FGCU turned the ball over just 13 times. Gradinjan led the charge for FGCU with a career-high 23 points, with Atwater contributing 22 on the night. In Gradinjan’s 23 minutes on the court, the redshirt-freshman went 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Gradinjan also pulled down a career-best nine rebounds to lead the team.

CLASS BREAKDOWN This year’s squad features one true freshman, five redshirt-freshmen, eight juniors and two seniors.

OVERTIME The Eagles saw three overtime games during the 201314 season, all of which were in the final five contests of the season. The team defeated Stetson twice but fell to Oklahoma State by one point, 61-60. This season, the team’s only overtime appearance came against Ohio State at the Paradise Jam. The team fell in double OT, 90-83.

TIE GAME In the nine games that Coach Smesko wore a tie last season (including the First-Round NCAA Tournament game against Oklahoma State - where he also broke out a jacket), the Eagles not only went 8-1, but also vastly outperformed their season statistical averages. When Smesko added neckware, the Eagles average 81.5 points per game and outscore foes by 23.5 points per game. This season, Smesko started the year with a tie and picked up a win over George Washington and has since led the team to a 2-1 record with neckware this season.

Things are quiet back at the nest this week as the semester winds down. Just men’s and women’s basketball are in action for the remainder of the year. • MEN’S BASKETBALL: The men’s team will host cross-state rival FIU Sunday at 2 p.m. at Alico Arena.

BACK IN ACTION

TOGETHER AGAIN

The Eagles return 10 players from last season. That group accounts for a strong percentage of last year’s statistics and will be crucial this season.

FGCU alum Brittany Kennedy and recent grad Sarah Hansen both signed pro contracts last week and joined Forssan Alku in Finland! That’s right. Two Eagles on the same team.

81%

FGCU returns of its scoring from last season in 56.5 points per game.

80%

The Eagles return of their rebounding from last season in 28.5 rebounds per game.

NEED NUMBERS The Eagles’ fast-paced offense was crucial last season as 22 of FGCU’s 26 wins came when the team scored 69 points or more. Six of the team’s eight losses were at the hands of opponents who held them to 60 points or fewer - including the final contest against Oklahoma State.

ATLANTIC SUN ACTION The Eagles hold the best record among all A-Sun teams in the recent history by an impressive mark. FGCU is 117-13 all time in conference play.

GOING-GOING-GONE

88%

The team will travel a total of 14,200 miles for competition this season. The nonconference slate includes 8,950 miles on the road before the team will trek another 5,250 miles for Atlantic Sun action.

FGCU brings back of its assists from a year ago. Returners dished out 433 of last year’s assists.

81%

The longest trip of the year stands as the New Years’ swing to Philadelphia and Boston (2,955 miles), while the shortest distance will be to Stetson in DeLand (400 miles).

The Green & Blue return of its steals from last season with 263 accounted for by returning players.

PROTECTING THE NEST When it comes to A-Sun play, there’s no tougher place to play than Alico Arena. The Eagles currently own a 56game win streak against conference opponents at home and hold a record of 66-1 in six seasons at Alico Arena. Overall, Alico was recently ranked as the second-toughest place to play in the nation. The team holds a record of 105-8 in Division I play at Alico for a win percentage of 92.7, second only to UConn’s Gampel Pavillion.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight returned to action last season after sitting out all of the 2012-13 season with an ACL injury. Knight excelled with a careerhigh 25 points and three blocks in the season opener at FIU and averaged 12.3 points per game with a team-high 93 blocks and 21 double-figure performances. This season, she was named the Preseason Player of the Year and has since picked up her first ASun Player of the Week award with a new career high.

PRESEASON AWARDS The Eagles picked up numerous preseason awards with junior Whitney Knight leading the way. Knight was named the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, while senior Jenna Cobb and junior Stephanie Haas earned Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference nod. Head Coach Karl Smesko was again named the Preseason Coach of the Year by College Sports Madness to begin the year.

PREPPED FOR THE SIDELINE Several of Coach Smesko’s former players are now leading teams on the sidelines themselves. The 2014-15 squad’s staff alone includes three former players in Chelsea Dermyer, Chelsea Lyles and Joyce Iamstrong.

SMESKO SAYS

This kid shoots it unbelievable. We have some really really good shooters but not many kids shoot it as well as her. This is is really impressive and I have no problem putting her in situations where she has to knock down shots. She can get to the rim, she can get to the foul line, she rebounds and she’s not afraid to take charges. I’ve been telling people for two years how good this kid is, people just haven’t been able to see it yet. Smesko on Taylor Gradinjan
