GAME 13 MATCHUP
This year’s Chattanooga squad has defeated Power 5 teams such as Indiana, Northwestern and Auburn, and they’ve lost to CollegeInsider.com and ESPNW Mid-Major #1 Green Bay by 30 and FGCU ASUN rival Stetson by 11. Following three straight losses to open the season, the Mocs have won six of seven.
The FGCU women’s basketball team will look to remain undefeated on the road (4-0) and extend a four-game winning streak against Chattanooga. With a win, FGCU would also improve to 3-2 against 2016-17 NCAA tournament teams. They’ve already defeated DePaul and Kentucky, while falling to Ohio State and Belmont. In addition to that, the Eagles have defeated reigning WNIT teams Kent State and Abilene Christian, and they’re scheduled to face South Dakota State, Harvard, Jacksonville and Stetson. A victory would also give FGCU its first 11-2 start since 201415 when the Eagles won 31 of its first 33 games. It would be the fourth 11-2 start or better in the Division-I era and the seventh in program history. The matchup signifies the second all-time meeting between the two programs after FGCU topped Chattanooga 68-55 on Dec. 20 of last year. Rosemarie Julien and Jessica Cattani each scored 15 points as the Eagles shot a then season-high 10-for-22 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range.
SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA Chattanooga (6-4) is led by 2013 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee Jim Foster, who previously coached at Ohio State and Vanderbilt. He is in his fifth season with the Mocs, and he has coached a team to the NCAA Tournament in 17 straight and 27 seasons overall during his career. He ranked sixth all-time in the NCAA in wins heading into this season.
In terms of its roster, the group of Lakelyn Bouldin, Keiana Gilbert, Aryanna Gilbert and Arianne Whitaker have started all 10 games, while the trio of Molly Melton (7), Jacobi Lynn (2) and Shelbie Davenport (1) have combined to fill the fifth spot. Bouldin, a sophomore guard, broke the program’s freshman 3-point record last year with 64 makes. This year, she is second on the team in scoring at 13.2 PPG while shooting 23-for-53 (.434) from 3-point range. Keiana Gilbert, a senior guard, is a 1,000 point scorer who leads the team in scoring (14.3 PPG) and rebounding (6.1 RPG). She also averages 2.6 assists and 1.3 blocks per game. Aryanna Gilbert is the third and final player to average in double figures at 12.9 PPG. She is also second on the team with 5.3 RPG, while Whitaker averages 4.0 PPG and is third on the team with 4.7 RPG. In fact, the top three scorers combine for 40.4 of the team’s 58.5 PPG.
NEXT UP Sunday will also mark the final road game for FGCU until Jan. 20 against Kennesaw State. Between now and then, the Eagles will face Harvard and SIU Edwardsville on Dec. 20-21 in the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn Classic, South Dakota State on Dec. 29, Florida Memorial on Dec. 30, Stetson on Jan. 6, NJIT on Jan. 13 and USC Upstate on Jan. 15.

AUSTRIAN WEAPON In addition to returning 1,737 points from last year’s team, FGCU head coach Karl Smesko has added Vienna, Austria native Lisa Zderadicka to the roster. The 5-6 guard led Houston Baptist with 11 points per game last year (276 total points). Thus, with her addition, the Eagles have over 2,000 NCAA Division I points from last year available. In addition to her scoring, Zderadicka averaged 4.5 rebounds last year, which was second on the team at Houston Baptist and would have tied China Dow for second on the FGCU roster last year behind Tytionia Adderly.
NEXT UP IN THE NEST On top of Zderadicka, FGCU added three transfers who will sit out this year due to NCAA Division I transfer rules who either led their school in scoring or finished in the top three last year. Davion Wingate tied for the team-high in scoring at 11.8 PPG for Stony Brook; Keri Jewett-Giles tallied 9.0 PPG for Southern Miss; and Kerstie Phills poured in a team-high 13.1 PPG for Wagner en route to NEC Rookie of the Year recognition. Kerstie is the daughter of the late Bobby Phills, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets.
UPPERCLASSMEN PRESENCE Among eligible players, this year’s roster features six upperclassmen, including five seniors and one junior. Taylor Gradinjan is the elder statesman on the team with this being her sixth year following two ACL tears to start her career. Jessica Cattani and China Dow are both fifth-year seniors, while Erica Nelson and Rose Julien are in their second season at FGCU following two years at Johnson County CC and Chipola College, respectively, and each player won an NJCAA national title. Lisa Zderadicka, who is a graduate transfer from Houston Baptist, is a fourth-year junior.
Belmont, both of which made the NCAA Tournament last year. The team also finished 4th in the Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas Nov. 23-25.
CONSISTENT SUCCESS FGCU is just one of six programs at the NCAA Division I level to win 25 or more games in each season since 2010-11. The others include: UConn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Stanford and James Madison.
OVERTIME HISTORY FGCU is now 7-6 all-time in the NCAA Division-I era in overtime games following the 89-84 win over No. 21 DePaul on Nov. 23. Three of those games have come against Stetson, and the Eagles hold a 2-1 record in those. DATE
