POINTS SCORED

WINS

LAST TIME V. SOUTHERN MISS. In a back-and-forth battle at the Reed Green Coliseum, the team fell to the University of Southern Mississippi, 76-74. The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Golden Eagles and moved to 3-1 on the year, while USM improved to 4-1. After trailing by seven points early in the contest, FGCU gained composure and took control of the game. The Eagles held a 42-31 lead at halftime and amplified the advantage to 17 points but saw as the home team increased the defensive pressure and held FGCU to zero field goals over a span of eight minutes. USM fought through the end of the match and reclaimed the lead in the final minute to take the win.

SCOUTING THE VISITING TEAM • Southern Miss. comes to Southwest Florida with a record of 6-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles have produced two three-game win streaks with a two-point loss at McNeese as the year’s only blemish. The team returns four starters from a squad that went 27-7 last season with a 13-3 record in Conference-USA action. • The Golden Eagles were selected to finished third among Conference USA’s 14 teams, behind just Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. In the preseason voting, Tamara Jones earned a spot on the Preseason All-Conference team after being voted as the C-USA Newcomer of the Year a season ago. • Jones currently leads the team with 13.0 points per game, while two others add double figures. The senior is shooting 58.8 percent from the field with 6.3 rebounds per game. Jerontay Clemons and Kierra Jordan add 11.0 and 10.9 points per game, respectively, with Clemons also pulling down 6.3 rebounds per contest. Clemons and Jordan pace the team with eight 3-pointers a piece with Clemsons possessing a teambest 17 steals through seven games. Point guard Alex Coyne has made up for the loss of last year’s national assist leader Jamierra Faulkner - who graduated last year - with 27 assists. Faulkner scored 17 points with 12 assists in last year’s battle in Mississippi, leaving 72 percent of the team’s scoring to make the trip to Fort Myers. • As a unit, Southern Miss. has averaged 74 points per game, while holding opponents to 54.7. The Eagles hold a success rate of 49.4 percent from the field with a 41.6 percent mark from 3-point range. USM has been outrebounded by opponents by a margin of just one board per game but has held the turnover advantage at 16.9 to 23.7 per contest. • Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis - a former player with the Golden Eagles - is in her 11th season with USM. She holds a win percentage of 45.3 with 111 wins and 134 losses at USM.

LAST TIME OUT:

With a record of 2-1 and the advantage in point differential, the Eagles took home the Island Division crown at the 2014 Paradise Jam last week.

THE BREAKDOWN:

WICHITA STATE In the first of three games, the Eagles defeated Wichita State 56-39 on Thanksgiving Day. The Eagles held the Shockers to just 13 points in the first half and extended the lead to a game-high 29 points with 55 percent shooting in the second half. Wichita State increased its point production in the final minutes of action but could not overcome the Eagles’ game-long advantage as the Green and Blue ultimately took the 17-point victory. CLEMSON With 14 made shots from the perimeter, the team cruised to its second victory in as many days with an 86-61 win over Clemson Friday afternoon. The Eagles sank 10 3-pointers with 8-of-10 made shots from the free-throw line in the first half to hold a 52-27 lead at the break. The Tigers shot 54.2 percent and matched FGCU’s point production in the second half but were unable to catch the Green and Blue’s lead as FGCU became the only undefeated team in the Island Division of the Paradise Jam. OHIO STATE With 11 made shots from the perimeter in the first half, the Eagles took a 41-36 lead into halftime. The Buckeyes pressured FGCU heavily outside in the second half and used several brief runs to close the gap. The Buckeyes took the lead on a 3-point shot with 6:42 to go and traded the advantage with the Eagles four times in the remaining minutes before sending the game to overtime with a 70-70 tie. OSU sank 12-of-18 free throws in the two overtime periods, compared to FGCU’s 3-of-10 to edge the Eagles and take the seven-point victory.

CLASS BREAKDOWN This year’s squad features one true freshman, five redshirt-freshmen, eight juniors and two seniors.

OVERTIME The Eagles saw three overtime games during the 201314 season, all of which were in the final five contests of the season. The team defeated Stetson twice but fell to Oklahoma State by one point, 61-60. This season, the team’s only overtime appearance came against Ohio State at the Paradise Jam. The team fell in double OT, 90-83.

TIE GAME In the nine games that Coach Smesko wore a tie last season (including the First-Round NCAA Tournament game against Oklahoma State - where he also broke out a jacket), the Eagles not only went 8-1, but also vastly outperformed their season statistical averages. When Smesko added neckware, the Eagles average 81.5 points per game and outscore foes by 23.5 points per game. This season, Smesko started the year with a tie and picked up a win over George Washington and has since led the team to a 1-1 record with neckware this season.

Things are quiet back at the nest this week as the semester winds down. Just men’s and women’s basketball are in action for the remainder of the year. • MEN’S BASKETBALL: The men’s team travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on UMass at the Basketball Hall of Fame Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

BACK IN ACTION

TOGETHER AGAIN

The Eagles return 10 players from last season. That group accounts for a strong percentage of last year’s statistics and will be crucial this season.

FGCU alum Brittany Kennedy and recent grad Sarah Hansen both signed pro contracts last week and joined Forssan Alku in Finland! That’s right. Two Eagles on the same team.

81%

FGCU returns of its scoring from last season in 56.5 points per game.

80%

The Eagles return of their rebounding from last season in 28.5 rebounds per game.

NEED NUMBERS The Eagles’ fast-paced offense was crucial last season as 22 of FGCU’s 26 wins came when the team scored 69 points or more. Six of the team’s eight losses were at the hands of opponents who held them to 60 points or fewer - including the final contest against Oklahoma State.

ATLANTIC SUN ACTION The Eagles hold the best record among all A-Sun teams in the recent history by an impressive mark. FGCU is 117-13 all time in conference play.

GOING-GOING-GONE

88%

The team will travel a total of 14,200 miles for competition this season. The nonconference slate includes 8,950 miles on the road before the team will trek another 5,250 miles for Atlantic Sun action.

FGCU brings back of its assists from a year ago. Returners dished out 433 of last year’s assists.

81%

The longest trip of the year stands as the New Years’ swing to Philadelphia and Boston (2,955 miles), while the shortest distance will be to Stetson in DeLand (400 miles).

The Green & Blue return of its steals from last season with 263 accounted for by returning players.

SMESKO’S PREPERATION Smesko’s game preparation is one of the most crucial factors in the Eagles’ all-time success. Last season, the team went 14-2 in games when they had four or more days to prepare. In 12+ seasons, Smesko holds a record of 109-20 in games with that much time for preparing for a win percentage of 84.3 percent.

DOUBLE DUTY Ten different players have scored at least 10 points in at least one game so far this season, with four currently averaging double-figures.

THE HISTORY Despite just a 12-year presence, the FGCU women’s basketball team boasts a rich history. Led by 12th-year Head Coach Karl Smesko, the Eagles have produced a program record of 319-65 for a remarkable win percentage of 83 percent. Smesko has produced ten 20-win seasons since the program’s inception with two seasons that eclipsed the 30-win mark.

Since opening its doors in December 2002, Alico Arena has served as the centerpiece of FGCU athletics. In addition to the 4,500 seat basketball and volleyball facility, the arena houses Athletic Department staff offices, 12 locker rooms, a full suite of luxury boxes, a hospitality suite, the Human Performance Athletic Training Center, a fitness center and an auxiliary gym.

After a four-year transition period, the Eagles made the NCAA Tournament in their first year of postseason eligibility. Since making the transition to DI, the Eagles have compiled a record of 180-42 and have finished atop the Atlantic Sun standings four times in five years. In the last three seasons, the Eagles have lost just one Atlantic Sun game.

My biggest concern is which five kids are on the court in the final seconds. Which five kids are out there when it all comes down to that moment?

The Green & Blue took on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. They went 6-6.

In 12+ seasons, the Eagles have scored 100 points or more on 12 occasions. Since the transition to Division I, the team has hit the mark five times including Sunday’s 102-54 win over Ave Maria

This season, the team will face teams from 13 different conferences. Let’s take a look.

TIME’S TICKING 2013-14 marked the first season in which a 10-second back court clock was utilized in NCAA women’s basketball. The Eagles were called with a 10-second violation ZERO times last season.

#HASHTAG SMESKO’S OFFENSE The Eagles run a motion offense with five equal parts constantly moving to create the best shots. Don’t be surprised to see five ‘G’s in the starting lineup as 12 of 16 players are listed as guards.
