SPORTS INFORMATION OFFICE The Florida Gulf Coast University Sports Information Office is located in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in Alico Arena. The Sports Information Office is on the third floor in room 1090.

The sports information staff will assist you to the fullest extent possible in your coverage of the Eagles. Please contact Assistant Sports Information Director Michael Hill with any questions, concerns, or requests. CREDENTIALS A media credential issued by the Sports Information Office is required in order to gain access to Alico Arena on game days. To request a credential, please contact Michael Hill at (239) 590-7064, or via email at mhill@fgcu.edu. Credential requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance for each game. If time permits, the passes will be mailed. If not, the passes will be left at Will Call, located at the front entrance of Alico Arena. PHOTOGRAPHERS Photo credentials should be requested in the same manner as media credentials. NCAA policy establishes that only photographers on assignment will be afforded credentials. Designated areas for photographers have been marked on each baseline, all photographers must remain within the designated areas. GAME DAY SERVICES Complete play-by-play, halftime box scores, final box scores, quotes and out-oftown scores will be provided, along with game programs, media guides and game notes for each team. WIRELESS INTERNET Wireless internet access is available inside of Alico Arena. There is no username or password required to access the internet. PRESS TABLE & MEDIA SEATING Work space at the press tables in Alico Arena is limited. Space for working writers, television, and radio broadcasters and scouts is located in the press section on the north end of the floor. For larger events, media outlets may be assigned to media tables along the baseline. All seating is assigned. POST-GAME PRESS CONFERENCES/ INTERVIEWS The conference room on the third floor of Alico Arena will serve as the interview room for all home games. Head coaches and requested players will be available for post-game interviews after the NCAA-mandated 10 minute “cooling off” period. Please make postgame player interview requests for both teams to FGCU Assistant SID Michael Hill prior to the end of the game. NON-GAME DAY INTERVIEWS All player and coach interviews should be scheduled through the Sports Information Office. We will do our best to coordinate an interview time that is convenient to both the student-athlete or coach and media member. The best time to interview a student-athlete or coach is after practice. Please contact Assistant Sports Information Director Michael Hill to schedule all interviews. GAME NOTES AND STATISTICS Up-to-date statistics are available at FGCUAthletics.com. FORT MYERS

In the late 1800s, Tootie McGregor and Thomas & Mina Edison began the beautification of Fort Myers. Imported Royal Palms were planted along Riverside Drive, later renamed McGregor Boulevard. These magnificent Royal Palms, some towering at 75 feet, give the City of Palms its nickname. Incorporated in 1886, Fort Myers is the center of a popular tourist area in Southwest Florida and the seat of Lee County. It is located about 120 miles south of Tampa at the meeting point of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caloosahatchee River. Fort Myers was the frequent winter home of Thomas Edison and is the current home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins spring training camps. The first known resident of what is now Fort Myers was Manuel Gonzalez, a Spaniard from the province of Asturias, who came via Cuba in the 19th century. Fort Myers, built in 1850 as a military fort to fend off Seminole Indians that were massacring the area’s few settlers, was named after Col. Abraham C. Myers, who was stationed in Florida for seven years and was the son-in-law of the fort’s establisher and commander. In 1858, after years of elusive battle, Chief Billy Bowlegs and his warriors were persuaded to surrender and move west, and the fort was abandoned. Billy’s Creek, which flows into the Caloosahatchee River and runs between The Beau Rivage Condominiums and Alta Mar, was named after a temporary camp where Billy Bowlegs and his men awaited ships to take them west. The fort was abandoned until 1863 when a small number of Federal troops re-occupied the fort during the Civil War. In 1865 the fort was attacked unsuccessfully by a very small group of Confederates. After the war, the fort was again deserted. The first settlers arrived in 1866, but it wasn’t until 1882 when the city experienced a significant influx of settlers. By 1885, when Fort Myers was incorporated, it was the second largest city only to Tampa on Florida’s west coast south of Cedar Key - even larger than Clearwater and Sarasota, also growing cities at the time. Fort Myers first became a nationally known winter resort with the building of The Royal Palm Hotel in 1898. The real spark of the city’s growth was the construction of the Tamiami Trail Bridge built across the Caloosahatchee River in 1924. After the bridge’s construction, the city experienced its first real estate boom and many subdivisions sprouted around the city.The Florida of days long past, with unspoiled white sand beaches, exotic wildlife and lush subtropical foliage, still can be found on The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel in southwest Florida. Known as Florida’s tropical island getaway, this paradise is a favorite vacation spot because of its feel of old Florida that no longer exists in many areas. In addition to the beautiful natural environment, active travelers are pleased to find an abundance of golf, tennis and watersports, as well as some unusual attractions. Lee County embraces nine distinct areas, each with its own unique character. Best known are Sanibel and Captiva islands, connected to the mainland by an alluring three-mile-long causeway and, to each other, by a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bridge at Blind Pass.

Sanibel is known worldwide for its shelling. More than 400 varieties of shells litter the beaches, and particularly can be found after an especially high or low tide. For most visitors, however, shelling is merely a delightful excuse to enjoy hours of sun worshipping along some of the finest shoreline in North America. Interesting shops, restaurants, and art galleries dot the road from the Sanibel Lighthouse to Tarpon Bay Road. On the way to Captiva Island, located toward Sanibel’s northern tip, the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is home to many exotic species of birds and plants. A four-mile drive with access to walking and canoe/kayak trails offers outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities. The refuge occupies more than half the island. The main attraction on Captiva is that there are none. Many people wile away the hours in one outdoor endeavor or another. It was here that Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of the famous aviator, wrote her best-selling book, “A Gift from the Sea.” Further south, Estero Island, home of Fort Myers Beach, long has been recognized as one of the “world’s safest beaches” because of its gently sloping shoreline. The sand is particularly soft and white, akin to powdered sugar. Especially suited for family vacations, Estero offers every imaginable water toy, from windsurfer to catamaran and parasailing. Numerous marinas operate boating and fishing charters. Local restaurants benefit from the catch, which generally includes red snapper and grouper. Inventor Thomas Edison and his friend, automobile manufacturer Henry Ford, decided early on to make their winter homes in Fort Myers. Today visitors tour their neighboring estates with Edison’s botanical gardens, laboratory and museum. During Edison’s winters in Fort Myers, he and his wife Mina hosted well-known house guests like industrialist Harvey Firestone, President Herbert Hoover and cereal king John Harvey Kellogg. Henry Ford purchased his quaint home, “Mangoes,” in 1916 to spend the winter months visiting Edison. The two properties were separated by a fence the two families named “The Friendship Gate.” Other in-town attractions include the Southwest Florida Historical Museum, downtown river cruises, and the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium. Shell Factory in North Fort Myers and Eden Vineyards, the country’s southernmost bonded winery, to the east are also popular stops. For the sports minded, public golf courses and tennis courts make southwest Florida some of the best playing turf in the state.

Florida Gulf Coast University, a member of the State University System of Florida, is a comprehensive university created to address the educational needs of the rapidly growing Southwest Florida population. Classrooms showcase state-of-the-art multimedia instructional systems that feature Internet access, document cameras, and audio and video presentations. The history of Florida Gulf Coast University is a visionary one built on support for providing higher education opportunities in Southwest Florida. Area citizens began the initiative to bring a state university to this part of Florida, and their early requests were quickly supported by elected officials at the local and state levels. With support from the Florida Board of Regents and the full Florida Legislature, a new university was born. The Board of Regents formally recommended in January 1991 the development of Florida’s tenth state university to be located in Southwest Florida; and, in May 1991, then Governor Lawton Chiles signed the legislation authorizing the new university. Southwest Florida’s support for a university was never more evident than during the next year, when private landowners offered more than 20 gift sites for the university campus. In early 1992, the Board of Regents selected the site offered by Ben Hill Griffin III and Alico, Inc. of 760 acres of land located just east of Interstate 75 between Alico and Corkscrew Roads. Roy McTarnaghan was named founding university president in April 1993. Initial staff were hired that summer, and the university’s academic and campus planning began in earnest. Plans for the first phase of campus construction were unveiled in February 1994; and shortly thereafter, the Florida Legislature named the institution as Florida Gulf Coast University. The vision for the university was one which would address emerging higher education needs for the 21st century, including the use of technology in the learning/teaching process and multi-year contracts as an alternative to faculty tenure. The Board of Regents approved an agreement in May 1995 with the United Faculty of Florida allowing FGCU to offer a contract system for faculty members. Campus groundbreaking was held on November 28, 1995, with more than 600 people participating in the celebratory event for Southwest Florida. With aggressive academic programs and campus development schedules slated to culminate in an opening day of August 25, 1997, the early staff and faculty were busy meeting deadlines every month. Inaugural degree programs were approved by the Board of Regents in March 1996. The FGCU Foundation, a private fundraising arm of the university, gained extraordinary financial support for an institution which at the time could only be seen on a drawing board. Faculty throughout the country were attracted to FGCU for the opportunity to offer higher education in new and innovative ways.

The first FGCU student, Mariana Coto, was admitted in January 1997; and she participated in the historic ribbon cutting on the university’s August 25, 1997 opening day. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools awarded FGCU accreditation candidacy later that year, and a comprehensive self-study was launched. The first commencement was held in May 1998, with 81 FGCU graduates. In August 1998, the first phase of student housing opened. In September, Founding President McTarnaghan announced his intention to step down on May 1, 1999. FGCU’s second commencement ceremonies, held May 1999, marked the last official act of the founding president, as well as the graduation of 417 students. The Board of Regents launched a national search held during the spring and summer for FGCU’s second president; and the university received official notification in June 1999 that it had achieved, in record time, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In July 1999, the Board of Regents named William C. Merwin as FGCU’s second president. President Merwin arrived on campus for his first day on September 16, 1999. He immediately initiated a highly participatory strategic planning process for students, faculty, and staff to carry the young institution to its next stage of development. The Florida Legislature established governing boards of trustees for state universities in 2001, and 13 members were appointed to the Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees. This governing board is providing leadership that is community based, responsive to the market, and nimble. In January 2007, FGCU President Bill Merwin retired, and Dean of the Lutgert College of Business Richard Pegnetter was named Interim President by the FGCU Board of Trustees. A national and highly competitive search for FGCU’s third president was launched. On the university’s 10th anniversary of its opening day - August 25, 2007 - the FGCU Board of Trustees selected Wilson G. Bradshaw to serve as the institution’s third president. President Bradshaw has the important responsibility of leading FGCU into its second decade of development and service as an institution offering access to quality higher education in Southwest Florida. As FGCU moves forward, student applications and admissions are dramatically increasing; campus construction of academic and support buildings remains aggressive; new undergraduate and graduate degree programs are being added; our athletics program has moved from NCAA Division II to Division I; the FGCU Foundation’s private fundraising continues to be successful; and the excitement level for FGCU’s future is high.

Solar Field Florida Gulf Coast University, Mitsubishi Electric, and Regenesis Solar Power completed construction of a 15-acre solar photovoltaic array (December 2009) that produces approximately 85 percent of the energy needed to operate FGCU’s Engineering and Business School buildings, as well as AB-7, the newest science laboratory and classroom building for the College of Arts and Sciences. The University’s total reliance on Florida Power & Light Co. is reduced by 18 percent, thanks to the power generated by rows of solar panels that tilt and rotate as they “follow” the sun throughout the day. The field is one of the largest solar photovoltaic projects for an academic institution in the United States. With this two megawatt installation on the FGCU campus, the university demonstrates its long-term commitment to renewable energy, benefiting the environment for generations to come.

Student Union The Student Union is the community center for Florida Gulf Coast University. Since its completion in 2004, it has been the mission of the Union to serve students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests. The Student Union offers a variety of programs, activities, services and facilities that, when taken together, represent a well-considered plan for the life of the university. Many of the essential services a student needs are located in just one location, so whether you need a bite to eat, school textbooks and supplies, or just a place to hang out, the Student Union is the place. The Student Union houses an array of services and facilities including: Einstein Bros. Bagels, the University Bookstore, Real Food on Campus at The Perch, Student Government, Campus Involvement, The Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of Students, and Campus Reservations. The addition to the existing Student Union building, which totals approximately 20,000 square feet, will help the University keep pace with student population growth and provide new student spaces to compliment use of the existing building. For example, the addition will include new space for a large student lounge area that will allow students to socialize or just relax from the pressures of their academic studies.

Lakefront The Outdoors Program at Florida Gulf Coast University encompasses both the Waterfront and Outdoor Pursuits. The Waterfront offers a variety of activities ranging from motorized water sports on the lake, disc golf, kayaking, sailing, and more! Outdoor Pursuits, better known as “OP”, offers a variety of trips and programs for students, faculty, and staff year round.

Cross Currents Albert Paley’s “Cross Currents” is hard to miss. Located in the Central Plaza of campus, the nearly 22-foot tall sculpture is big, bold, and colorful. This 17,000-pound structure plays with positive and negative shape. Though abstract, the jagged teeth of an open-mouthed alligator, shards of sunlight, the fringe of palm fronds and the rough silhouette of a palm trunk are visible. The bright colors are representative of Florida: the pink of flamingoes, blue for the sky and gulf, the reds and oranges of sunsets.

South Village and SoVI Dining Everglades and Biscayne Halls are part of the first phase of the South Village residential community. Everglades Hall opened fall 2008 and Biscayne Hall opened fall 2009. These 5-story, 124,000 square-foot residence halls will each house 406 first-year students. Everglades and Biscayne Halls are home to the First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) Program, designed for first-time in college students who are motivated to have a successful transition to college life living. Adjacent to Everglades Hall, students will find fresh dining options at SoVi Dining. SoVi, or South Village Dining, is a separate, stand-alone facility operated by Aramark. All appliances are Energy Star compliant, and all food selections are freshly prepared right in front of the customer.

Wilson G. Bradshaw, Ph.D. serves as President of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). On August 25, 2007, the University’s tenth anniversary, the Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees unanimously selected Dr. Bradshaw to become the institution’s third President. President Bradshaw came to FGCU from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he served for seven years as President. Bradshaw was also a professor of psychology and a full-time member of the graduate faculty. From 1995 to 2000, he served as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

President Bradshaw leads FGCU at a time of significant enrollment and campus growth. Now in its 13th year since opening in 1997, the University’s enrollment has surged to more than 12,000 students from an initial 2,500. The introduction of new academic programs also is on the rise, with currently more than 80 programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and other advanced graduate degrees. The academic programs are supported by a campus of 70 buildings, as well as more than 1,000 highly qualified faculty and staff. Environmental sustainability and civic engagement are hallmarks of the institution’s mission. President Bradshaw is active in civic, educational, and philanthropic initiatives in FGCU’s Southwest Florida region and beyond. He serves on the Alliance of Educational Leaders Board of Directors as its Chair; Naples Botanical Gardens Board of Directors; Lee County Education Foundation; Searching for Solutions, Inc. Board of Directors; Campus Compact’s national Board of Directors, and American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Board of Directors. Bradshaw is widely published in professional periodicals and journals. His contributions include published articles in USA Today, Florida Neuroendocrine Society and Science 194. In the research arena, Bradshaw has been granted more than one million dollars for academic study in several areas including math, science, computers and technology education; microbiology for health education; and neuroscience. He has been honored with several professional awards including the Spurgeon Award for career excellence, exceptional community service, and serving as role models for young people. His recent awards include the Florida Campus Compact Founder’s Award, and as a 2009 Man of the Year by Gulfshore Life. President Bradshaw and his wife, Jo Anna, have three adult sons, and reside in Estero, Fla.

Ken Kavanagh, 50, begins his second year as Director of Athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University, having accomplished a great deal in his career to date. Kavanagh, the second full-time athletic director in school history, began his duties at FGCU in June of 2009. Kavanagh, who came to FGCU after 13 years at Bradley University, was appointed to his position on May 7, 2009 by FGCU President Dr. Wilson G. Bradshaw. The final year in Kavanagh’s first decade on Bradley’s “Hilltop” will go down as one of the greatest all-around years in BU Athletics history. During the 2005-06 season, a schoolrecord three teams earned NCAA Tournament invitations, beginning with the third at-large selection for the soccer program in the fall and continuing with the men’s basketball team’s historic run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in March that included victories over nationally ranked Kansas and Pitt. In addition, the women’s golf team won its fourth Missouri Valley Conference championship in eight years to gain its third trip to the NCAA Regionals. In 2007-08, Men’s Soccer reached a milestone “Elite Eight” appearance and men’s basketball also achieved a runner-up finish in the 2008 initial College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

Most recently, in 2008-09, the Braves witnessed benchmark success with their first ever Missouri Valley Conference tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth and victory in softball, a runner-up finish in the inaugural Collegeinsider.com (CIT) post-season men’s basketball tournament and a record 21 victories in women’s basketball. While the Braves enjoyed successes on the playing field with Kavanagh, Bradley’s student-athletes continued to excel in the classroom. For eight consecutive years, Bradley led the Valley in federal graduation rate (77 percent) and remained well ahead of the curve in the NCAA’s new Academic Progress Rate, receiving public recognition for its APR success in soccer, men’s golf, women’s tennis and volleyball. During Kavanagh’s tenure at Bradley, the Braves accumulated 31 Academic All-America or Scholar All-America awards. BU also achieved new single game, regular season and attendance marks in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, and volleyball under his direction, as well as record revenue streams from external sources. Under Kavanagh’s direction in 1996, Bradley Athletics established the BU B.L.A.S.T. (Building Leadership And Supporting Teams) NCAA Life Skills Program, which is designed to enhance the total being of Braves’ student-athletes. It involves activities ranging from personal, social and career development to community service projects and leadership opportunities. Also, Bradley was commended in March of 2002 by U.S. News & World Report for having the seventh-best College Sports Program in terms of gender equity and the athletic department’s effort for equality was further recognized in 2007 when Bradley received an “A” from the Women’s Sports Foundation for its gender equity performance. One of the founders of the I-AAA Athletic Directors’ Association in 2000-01, Kavanagh is the First Vice-President for the organization, which is comprised of the 101 non-football playing Division I member institutions and nine related conferences. In recognition of his accomplishments at Bradley and as a leader in college athletics, Kavanagh was named the Central Region Division I AstroTurf Athletic Director of the Year during the 2008 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention in Dallas. A member of the 1999 Peoria’s “40 Leaders Under Forty” class, Kavanagh also maintains active membership with the Knights of Columbus. Kavanagh went to Bradley from Bowling Green State University, where he steadily moved up the administrative ranks in nine years. After starting as an assistant athletic director in 1987, Kavanagh left BGSU in 1996 as the senior associate athletic director. In his final position with the Falcons, Kavanagh was the administrator for football, men’s basketball and hockey while also acting as event manager. Responsible for facility management, he also supervised the staffs for sports medicine, equipment and strength and conditioning. Kavanagh also served as the chief liaison for the financial affairs area. Kavanagh began his administrative career by working in the athletic department at Yale University from 1982 to 1985, then worked as a graduate assistant in the athletic department at the University of Notre Dame from 1985 to 1987 before joining Bowling Green. Athletic administration runs in Kavanagh’s bloodlines: his uncle, Kevin Kavanagh, is the former baseball coach and athletic director at Loyola College in Baltimore, planting the seed that athletic administration would be his nephew’s calling. Likewise, Ken Kavanagh’s father, John, coached a highly-successful high school summer baseball program in Connecticut for 25 years that produced former Major Leaguer Tim Teufel and NFL Hall-of-Famer Steve Young.

Alico Arena, located in beautiful Fort Myers, Fla., is a 120,000 square-foot complex and serves as the centerpiece of Florida Gulf Coast University's NCAA Division I athletics program. Opened in the fall of 2002, Alico Arena also serves as the home of the Campus Fitness and Recreation and Intramurals, as well as the Human Performance and Athletic Training programs in the College of Health Sciences. It is also home to the FGCU volleyball and basketball programs. A naming rights gift by Alico Incorporated significantly enhanced the facility. Alico Arena has 4,500 seats in an oval configuration and a permanent hardwood floor. It includes four full-sized basketball courts and six suites. In addition to the arena, the facility includes offices for the Athletics Department and arena staff, as well as 12 locker rooms, and a hospitality room. FGCUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s locker room is conveniently located in Alico Arena just steps from the court. The locker room recently underwent an upgrade with the addition of a new entertainment center, couches, and new paint scheme.

In 2004 FGCU began play in Alico Arena posting an impressive 8-1 mark in that debut season. Since then the Eagles have averaged exactly nine wins a season at Alico Arena. The Blue and Green are 54-7 all-time in Alico, winning nearly 89-percent of their home matches. FGCU hosted over 5,000 fans during the 2009 season, with an average attendance of 391 per match. In 2006, FGCU set a singleseason attendance record, averaging 788 fans per contest. In addition to recreation and athletic functions, Alico Arena is designed to host music and entertainment events, concerts, speakers, road shows, trade shows, and corporate events. Since its opening, Alico Arena has already hosted several special events including the Hillmyer-Tremont Classic, the National Independent Basketball tournament, the 2007 NCAA Division II South Regional, and multiple WNIT basketbll games. Each summer basketball and volleyball camps are also held in this state of the art facility. The arena has also been the site of several concerts, including Dierks Bentley and the Beach Boys. Alico Arena has also hosted events for U.S. Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev, retired General Colin Powell, and acclaimed poet and author Maya Angelou.

SPORTS MEDICINE

The goal of the FGCU sports medicine-athletic training staff is to provide the student-athletes, participating in intercollegiate athletics at FGCU, the highest standard of medical care possible. This care is provided both on the field and in the athletic training facilities. The health of every student-athlete at Florida Gulf Coast University is the primary concern of the FGCU Sports Medicine-Athletic Training staff, a group that covers every facet of comprehensive healthcare. From emergency medical care through the functional return to play, the Sports Medicine-Athletic Training staff serves the many needs of the FGCU student-athletes. The staff is constantly updating knowledge on the latest in sports medicine and athletic training techniques through seminars and clinics. The Athletic Training Staff consists of National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATA) certified and Florida state-licensed practitioners in cooperation with orthopedic, podiatric and internal medicine physicians. Under the guidance of Director of Sports Medicine Michael Estes, MS, ATC, LAT, and Head Team Physician Dr. James Guerra, the FGCU sports medicine-athletic training staff offers the most comprehensive health care with a special emphasis placed on injury prevention (Prehab) methods. The sports medicine-athletic training facilities offer daily services and care for all FGCU intercollegiate athletes. FGCU student-athletes receive highly specialized medical care when required from orthopedist and head team physician Dr. James Guerra. Aside from the team physicians, FGCU student-athletes have priority access to all services of the NCH Healthcare System and other consulting specialty physicians. They provide a comprehensive team approach in the delivery of health care service to FGCU student-athletes. Located on the first floor of Alico Arena, the spacious main sports medicine-athletic training facility offers the finest equipment available for the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Located in this facility are a hydrotherapy area, treatment/rehabilitation area, functional rehabilitation area, private physician exam room, and a taping/first aid area. The opening of the second Athletic Training facility occured in Jan. 2008 within the FGCU Outdoor Sports Complex. Located in this facility is a taping/first aid area, treatment/rehabilitation area, hydotheraphy area, as well as a private office/physician exam area, along with the Sports Medicine staff. Together these two facilities provide FGCU student-athletes with the finest in comprehensive health care while competing at FGCU.

FGCU provides all students and student-athletes with state of the art strength and conditioning equipment. Alico Arena’s workout facilities include free weights and machines, an array of treadmills and elliptical bikes, an aerobics room, and a power lifting room. FGCU’s weight room is open to all students and faculty, free of charge, seven days a week. The Strength and Conditioning staff prepare all workouts and conditioning schedules for FGCU’s student-athletes.

For more than 30 years the Atlantic Sun Conference has stood for achievement with integrity in both the academic and athletic arenas with a focus on the balance between the two for its student-athletes. The A-Sun boasts a blend of the most dynamic and prestigious private and public institutions in the region, with all committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life.

Building Continuing a tradition of academic achievement, a record 60 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2009-10 academic year. Lipscomb edged out Belmont, the seven-time winner of the All-Academic Trophy, to win its first such trophy with close to 72 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better. Several Bisons teams received national recognition for their success in the classroom. Both the men’s and women’s track & field teams posted team GPAs among the top five in the nation - the only school in the country to boast that distinction. Jacksonville’s women’s track team received their ninth straight USTFCCCA All-Academic honor. Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team posted the ninth best GPA in the country and the conference champion volleyball team led five A-Sun schools in receiving an AVCA Team Academic Award. The Stetson men’s tennis team led the nation with nine student-athletes earning the honor of Scholar Athlete from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. A total of five A-Sun schools and 24 student-athletes received recogntion from the ITA. Stetson and Belmont joined only 16 other Division I schools considered an All-Academic squad in both men’s and women’s tennis. For the first time the NCAA released single-year APR for Division I head coaches in six sports dating back to 2003-04, the beginning of the program. All 11 A-Sun schools produced a coach who had a year of a perfect score of 1000 and the league produced a total of 25 seasons with scores of 1000. Seven of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball recorded at least one score of 1000 and five teams had a score of 1000 in 2008-09, the most recent year recorded by the NCAA.

Winners Four A-Sun teams received Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association All-Sports Trophies in recognition of their performances in NCAA postseason play. Lipscomb’s softball team, ETSU’s men’s tennis squad plus UNF’s men’s golf team and women’s tennis carried the conference to the third-highest total by any one conference. Golf continued to boom in the conference as three league members on the women’s side advanced to NCAA play for the first time in conference play. Women’s golf became the first sport in the conference to produce three NCAA participants since baseball in 2003. At the NCAA Regionals, ETSU’s Nina Muehl opened with an 8-under 64, the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf and became just the second golfer from the A-Sun to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships. The Ospreys’ men’s golf team spent the year ranked among the top programs in the country alongside ETSU. Both advanced to NCAA postseason play

and the Ospreys made the nationals for the first time as a conference member. Sophomore Sean Dale earned All-America honors and qualified for the US Amateur, as did his teammates Kevin Alywin and Kevin Phelan. Phelan opened his summer by qualifying for the US Open at Pebble Beach. ETSU’s Rhys Enoch tied for the individual title at the NCAA East Regional and his play carried into summer as he made his second Palmer Cup team and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the British Amateur. Individual performances stood out on the diamond as FGCU’s Chris Sale became a consensus All-America en route to becoming the conference’s fourth firstround pick in the last two years. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman contended for the national triple crown and burst onto the national scene by winning the first-ever home run derby competition - contested at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Mercer’s Jacob Tanis finished one RBI shy of the national lead in pacing the Bears back to the top of the A-Sun for the first time in more than 25 years. In softball, two hurlers established themselves among the best in the nation. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers each topped the 30-win mark - a first for the conference. The two traded the national lead in ERA throughout the season and when the year came to a close, Kiihnl finished with the best mark in the nation with Childers taking a close second. Kiihnl and Childers ranked second and third in the country in fewest hits allowed per seven innings. For the first time in league history, the conference’s last remaining charter member, Mercer, hosted the General Shale Brick Basketball Championships. The hosts advanced to the final of the men’s event setting up a standing-room-only event at the University Center against ETSU. In the end the Buccaneers won back-to-back titles. Jacksonville advanced to the NIT for the straight second year and provided the league’s first win in the event since 1996 when Ben Smith connected on a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds to stun top-seeded Arizona State. On the women’s side ETSU became the third A-Sun school to win three straight titles, FGCU advanced to the WNIT for a third consecutive year and USC Upstate registered its first 20-win season as a Division I program.

For Life Alums from the Atlantic Sun, both recent and historic, continued to excel at the highest levels. Within the span of three days, FGCU produced its first two major league baseball players. Two pitchers of the Eagles’ 2008 A-Sun Championship squad, Casey Coleman and Sale, took their talents to Chicago as Coleman broke in with the Cubs and Sale soared through the White Sox system after spending less than two months in the minors. In late June, former Stetson AllAmerican Chris Johnson returned to the Astros lineup and hit over .380 his first two months as a regular. On the links, former ETSU star Rhys Davies has posted a solid rookie season on the European Tour. In the spring he picked up his first win and added back-toback runner-up finishes to move into the top 50 in the world for the first time as a professional. One of his second-place showings occurred at the Wales Open where he closed with a record nine-under-par round 62 on the Ryder Cup course at the Celtic Manor. His stellar play placed Davies eighth on ESPN’s “Top 25 Golfers Under 25” list. The conference will have representation at the Ryder Cup as former league individual champion Colin Montgomerie (1985 with former member Houston Baptist) will captain the European team. Montgomerie will be the second conference alum to lead a Ryder Cup squad. Hal Sutton (Centenary) served as captain for the United States in 2004.

COMPLIANCE Some FAQs when dealing with Student-Athletes What Is Compliance? At Florida Gulf Coast University, the Office of Compliance works within the department of athletics and the University to ensure FGCU’s compliance with all applicable NCAA, Atlantic Sun, and institutional rules. In doing so, the compliance office is charged with the following tasks:

• Educating administrators, coaches, staff, prospective student- athletes, current student-athletes and boosters about NCAA, Atlantic Sun, and institutional rules; • Developing monitoring systems to ensure compliance with NCAA, Atlantic Sun, and institutional rules (e.g., recruiting, academic eligibility, financial aid, awards and benefits, amateurism and agents). • Investigating and reporting violations of NCAA, Atlantic Sun, and institutional rules.

Are You A Booster? You are a booster if you are or ever have:

• Been a member of a booster organization that supports FGCU athletics; • Made any financial contributions to the athletics department; • Been involved in promoting FGCU’s athletics program; • Been a season ticket holder; or • Provided benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their relatives or friends.

WHAT ARE EXTRA BENEFITS? An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an FGCU employee or booster to provide a prospect, student-athlete, or their relatives or friends a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Examples of impermissible benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Gifts of cash, clothing, equipment or any other tangible item; • A special discount, payment arrangement or credit on any purchase or service; • Loan of money or cosigning of loans; • A vehicle, use of a vehicle, or any transportation expenses; • Free or reduced-cost services, purchases or rentals; • Entertainment on- or off-campus; or • Free or reduced-cost rent or housing.

You can become a booster if you provide benefits to prospects, student-athletes, their relatives or friends and if any of the following statements are true:

• The relationship between the athlete (or parents of the athlete) and the individual providing the benefits developed as a result of the athlete’s participation in athletics or their reputation as an athlete; • The relationship began only after the athlete became a prospect; • The relationship began only after the athlete had achieved notoriety due to his or her athletic ability or reputation; • The pattern of benefits increased after the athlete attained notoriety as a talented athlete.

Once A Booster Always A Booster. Once an individual is identified as a booster, the person retains that identity FOREVER! This is true even if the individual no longer contributes to, or is no longer involved with FGCU’s athletics program.

Who Is A Prospective Student-Athlete? A prospective student-athlete (prospect) is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade. Student-athletes enrolled in preparatory schools and two-year colleges are also considered prospects. An individual remains a prospect even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent.

• Jeopardize the eligibility of prospective and current student-athletes; • Result in the FGCU athletics program being penalized by the NCAA and/or Atlantic Sun Conference; and • Cause you to lose benefits or privileges associated with the athletics department (i.e., booster club membership, ticket privileges).

With a made-over roster highlighted by the return of two key outside hitters lost to knee injuries last year, as well as the addition of former FGCU basketball stars Chelsea Lyles and Adrianne McNally, the 2010 edition of the FGCU Eagles is optimistic heading into the program’s fourth year of Division I competition. After entering last season anticipating it would be the first FGCU sport to make an NCAA tournament appearance, the Eagles struggled to endure multiple injuries. Losses of Caitlin Shawver, injured pre-season, and Jelena Simic, injured in the conference semifinals; seriously hampered FGCU’s hopes of an NCAA tournament appearance. The Eagles would ultimately suffer a heart-breaking loss in the title match of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament at Alico Arena to wrap up the 2009 season. The 2010 FGCU volleyball squad, one of two FGCU “fast-track” sports designated by the school for NCAA and A-Sun tournament eligibility (after only two transitional seasons to Division I in 2007-2008), will have more depth and talent to overcome such issues. With the return of Shawver, Simic, and a trio of starters (Jacqueline Cowden, Emma Racila, Holly Youngquist), as well as the addition of Lyles and McNally, the Eagles have a renewed confidence heading into the 2010 season. FGCU’s depth, talent, chemistry, and commitment to excellence leave the squad hopeful it will improve on last season’s result when the A-Sun tournament returns to Alico Arena this season, November 18-20.

SETTERS/DEFENSE With statistically one of the best setters in the A-Sun during the 2009 season lost to graduation, the Blue and Green have big shoes to fill. Setter Chandra Lefever, a second team Atlantic Sun All-Conference selection, finished second in the A-Sun in assists/set with 10.22 and eighth in aces/set with 0.32. The team will turn to talented freshman Camil Dominguez and junior Alisha Hoffman for its setting duties in 2010. Both players will need to have a quick learning curve and are both newcomers to FGCU. Dominguez brings tons of experience from playing on the Dominican national team. The Santo Domingo, D.R. native led her country to a silver medal at the 2009 Junior World Championship. Hoffman, a transfer from South Florida CC, tallied 695 assists (7.81 assists per set) last season for the Panthers. Junior libero Holly Youngquist, frequentlly called â&#x20AC;&#x153;one of the top five liberos in the countryâ&#x20AC;? by Coach Nichols, will anchor the FGCU defense. The 5-6 veteran, hampered by a shoulder injury for the majority of the season, was one of two Eagles to play every set in 2009, finishing fifth in the A-Sun in digs/set with 4.06

BLOCKERS The Eagles must replace departed senior Ashley Yance at middle blocker, but have three capable options at the position. Senior Jacqueline Cowden was a starter alongside Yance last season, and finished as the team’s leader in hitting percentage (.279) and was second in blocks. The Blue and Green’s blocking corps received a boost when it was announced that Ashley Noble and former FGCU basketball standout Chelsea Lyles would be joining the program. Noble, a two-year starter at Wall HS, led her young squad to a pair of state tournament appearances and led the Shore Conference in blocks as a senior. Lyles, a first team Atlantic Sun All-Conference performer for the FGCU women’s hoops team, played volleyball and basketball at Western Nebraska CC where she was named first team All-Region in both sports. While at Western Nebraska she was also named Honorary Captain of the first team All-Nebraska Jr. College team. She played high school volleyball at Harrison HS, where she earned first team All-Area and second team All-State for volleyball during her high school career.

HITTERS FGCU returns a pair of starters from last season while welcoming a few reserves and a couple newcomers who will help provide depth at the position. Leading the way is senior Jelena Simic, who earned first team Atlantic Sun All-Conference and All-Tournament team accolades last season. Simic started 29 matches for the Eagles and finished second in the A-Sun in kills/set with 3.81 and third in points/set with 4.18. She recorded three of the top 20 kill totals in the A-Sun, including 25 in a 3-2 loss at Jacksonville. Redshirt-senior Emma Racila, a returning starter, looks to build upon the success she had in 2008. Racila appeared in all 31 matches and recorded 2.51 kills/set, the second-most on the team. Redshirt-senior Caitlin Shawver returns after sitting out all of the 2009 season with a knee injury. Shawver, a smart and powerful hitter, finished second on the team with 207 kills as a junior. Adrianne McNally, a first team Atlantic Sun All-Conference performer for the FGCU women’s hoops team, will help the Eagles with her all-around play. McNally’s size, live arm, and quickness give the team optimism that it will surpass expectations they set for themselves.

Dave Nichols, who enters his third season as the Head Coach at Florida Gulf Coast University, has enjoyed 14 years of success as a collegiate volleyball coach. Nichols has registered an astonishing 314-121 record in his career. Last season, Nichols and the Eagles posted a 15-5 conference record, to secure the No. 3 seed in the 2009 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Championships. In the program’s first conference tournament since making the move to Division I, the Blue and Green defeated No. 6 Campbell and No. 2 Jacksonville, before falling No. 1 Lipscomb in the championship match.

In his first season with the Eagles, Nichols led FGCU to the 2008 Regular Season Atlantic Sun Championship with a 20-8 overall record and an 18-2 conference record. His guidance led to a pair of First Team All-Conference selections and a All-Freshman team selection.

PLAYING EXPERIENCE

Nichols was one of the premier coaches in NCAA Division II as he won two national championships and finished as the national runner-up once. He guided teams to three Sunshine State Conference titles and 11 trips to the NCAA tournament in 12 years as a head coach at Barry. Nichols was named National Coach of the Year in 2001 after guiding Barry to the national championship with a 32-2 record.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

In his second season at Barry, he led the Buccaneers to their third trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 1997 where they eventually lost to West Texas A&M in the championship match. That season, the Bucs finished with a 28-5 record.

COACHING HONORS

In 2001, Nichols and the Bucs would go on to capture the school’s second national championship with a 32-2 record. The Bucs were dominant in the Elite Eight, losing only one game in three matches, as four players were named to the All-Elite Eight Tournament team.

NICHOLS’ CAREER YEAR BY YEAR

In 2003, Barry set an NCAA Division II record with 55 consecutive games won. The Bucs finished that season with a 24-4 record and a Sunshine State Conference championship. In 2004, Barry captured their third national championship (second under Nichols) with a 34-1 record. That season, the Bucs became the only team to defeat FGCU in Alico Arena. The Bucs finished the season with 33 consecutive wins, going five games only one time during the season. In his 12 seasons at Barry, Nichols coached 13 AVCA All-Americans, five Volleyball Monthly All-Americans, four Daktronics, Inc., All-Americans and three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. He also helped develop 29 AVCA All-Region selections and 40 AllSunshine State Conference selections as well. Nichols was named SSC Coach of the Year three times (2001, 2003, and 2004) as well as the AVCA South Region Coach of the Year in 1997, 2001 and 2004.

Prior to Barry, Nichols was an assistant at Arizona State where he helped lead the Sun Devils to their most successful season in program history finishing the year ranked #10 in the nation. He was also an assistant at Cal from 1988-92, and helped lead the Bears to the post season on three occasions. Nichols, a native of southern California, grew up playing volleyball on the beach with the likes of Ron Von Hagen, Greg Lee, and Wilt Chamberlain. He graduated from UCLA in 1976 after helping the team win three national championships. Nichols enjoyed a successful professional career before beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Bruins, where he tutored volleyball legend Karch Kiraly . He and his wife Kalam have two children, Travis and Tyler.

NELSON Assistant Coach

Fernanda Nelson is entering her third season as a member of the Eagles volleyball coaching staff. Nelson came to FGCU after spending nine years at National American University in Rapid City, SD. Nelson worked extensively at NAU since arriving as a freshman in 2000. She was named assistant coach for the Mavericks prior to the 2004 season at NAU. A native of Brazil, Nelson has 13 years of playing experience in her native country. In 1997, she was named the top setter in Brazil. She went to National American in 2000 as a freshman and immediately made an impact, earning second team All-American (NAIA) honors during her rookie season. She helped lead NAU to a national championship in 2002, and by the end of her collegiate career she was a three-time 1st team All-American selection and twice named the National Player of the Year (2001, 2003). She was inducted into the National American University Hall of Fame in 2007 and the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2008. Nelson along with her husband, Ethan, and daughter, Bella, reside in Estero.

Danny Mahy begins his fifth year as a member of the FGCU volleyball coaching staff. Mahy returned to FGCU in 2008 after two years away from the program. He spent the 2007 season as a member of Coach Nichols’ staff at Barry University, and brings several years of experience with winning programs to FGCU.

Danny is an incredible resource for me. I call him ‘Mr Can Do’ because not only is he extremely knowledgeable about volleyball, but he also handles any number of the details that have to be done on a daily basis. Mahy served as an assistant coach at FGCU during the first two years of the program. He helped build the first-year program into a national power in just one season, helping guide the Eagles to the 2004 regional semifinals during their first year of competition. In 2005, the Eagles advanced to the regional finals. Prior to his stint at FGCU, he served as an assistant coach at MiamiDade CC under Llida Medero. During his tenure with MDCC, the Sharks won the 2002 NJCAA National Championship and finished 2003 as the NJCAA National Runner-up. He also served as an assistant coach to the USA South Volleyball Club from 2003-2005 and a variety of other club teams in South Florida. Mahy spent two years as the assistant varsity girl’s coach at his alma mater, Miami Sunset High, from 2000-2001, and was also head coach of the boy’s JV program at Miami Sunset. As a player, Mahy played at Miami Sunset High where he was named team MVP in 2001, and led the team to the 2001 Miami-Dade County Championship. Mahy currently resides in Fort Myers.
