STRONG START
comeback of the year
The Eagles earned their third-consecutive win against Charlotte at home before losing three straight on the road. The team bounced back with two wins to increase its record to 5-3 before finishing the nonconference slate with a win over Saint Francis and losses to LSU, Virginia and Saint Joseph’s.
AWAY FOR THE HOLIDAYS The Hardwood Tournament of Hope marked the fourth-consecutive year the Eagles have traveled for a specialty tournament. With trips to Mexico, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands, the Green and Blue holds a record of 6-5 in the last four seasons.
need numbers
After averaging 3.9 points per game in 12 minutes last season, sophomore Stephanie Haas has stepped up her game this year. Haas had a breakout week with two-consecutive career-high scoring performances where she put up 19 points against Charlotte and 20 points at Southern Miss. She followed with 22 points in the win over USF. She is currently averaging 12.2 points per game in 27.6 minutes and has started all 13 games this season.
Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight returned to action this season after sitting out all of last season with an ACL injury. Knight excelled with a career-high 25 points and three blocks in the season opener at FIU and has since averaged a 13.1 points per game with a team-high 37 blocks.
RECORD SETTING NIGHT In the Eagles’ win Dec. 20 over Saint Francis University, the team produced three season highs (rebounds, blocks and steals) and also saw two program records set and tied. Sarah Hansen’s nine steals set a Division I program record, while Whitney Knight’s six blocks tied a record previously set by Knight. The game also saw 12 season-highs set by six different players.
The Eagles’ fast-paced offense has been crucial this season. Five of FGCU’s seven wins this year have come when the team scored 71 points or more. Four of the team’s losses have been at the hands of opponents who have held them to 60 points or fewer.

nonconference competition
nearing the top
The Green & Blue took on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. They went 6-6. Here’s the breakdown.
Sarah Hansen’s accolades and milestones keep adding up. The senior currently ranks 15th among all-time Atlantic Sun players with 1,623 points. She sits one points behind the 14th position and 189 points out of the top-10.
giving charity With a new emphasis on hand check rules, there is a common perception this season that there are more fouls called and in turn more free-throws awarded. However, since the transition to Division I in 2007, the Eagles have averaged 18.15 free throw attempts per game, and this season they have gone to the charity stripe an average of 20 times per game. The number of free throws made and attempted each year has fluctuated. Here we see that this year the number is not out of line with past seasons.
hot streak With 37 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles hold the third-best conference win streak in the nation. They sit behind only Baylor and Weber State.
SIMPLY THE BEST In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles have set three separate 3-point records.
•350 made 3-pointers
•342 made 3-pointers
(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)
•22 made 3-pointers
(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)
The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.

UP NEXT: USC UPSTATE The Eagles will continue Atlantic Sun play on Saturday, Jan. 11 when they host the Spartans of USC Upstate for a 7 p.m. matchup at Alico Arena. The Spartans are currently 6-7 on the season and 1-1 in ASun play after falling to Northern Kentucky and defeating Lipscomb during the conference’s opening weekend. As a unit, Upstate is averaging 64.5 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 73.1 points. The team has shot 38.1 percent from the field through 13 games and has maintained a 27.4 shooting percentage from 3-point range. Spartan foes hold the advantage on the glass, 43.9 to 40.0 rebounds per game. Foes also hold an advantage in ball control as USC Upstate has turned the ball over 17.6 times per game and has forced 17.2 miscues per game. Individually, the Spartans are led by sophomore post Brittany Starling. Starling averages a team-high 11.8 points per game with a team-leading 7.6 rebounds per game and has converted 53.1 percent of shot this season. The Spartans have three others hovering around 10 points per game with Brittany Clency adding 9.3 and leading the team with 21 assists. Freshman Raven Jefferson paces the team with 17 steals on the year, while junior Shelby Hicks adds 15 blocks in the Spartan’s defensive effort. In 11 all-time meetings with the Spartans, the Eagles hold a 9-2 advantage with a win streak of four games. The Eagles’ biggest win was a 102-53 victory over the Spartans in 2009. They have outscored Upstate by an average of 76.2 to 59.4 through the 11 games and have never scored fewer than 70 points in all games.

HANSEN’S AT IT AGAIN
Five active NCAA Division I coaches currently hold win percentages of over .800. Smesko joins Geno Auriemma (UConn), Kim Mulkey (Butler), Tara VanDerveer (Stanford) & Matt Bollant (Illinois) in the elite group.
Hansen’s 28-point performance against Saint Joseph’s was the senior’s 17th 20+ point game of her career. The mark is tied with Mercer’s Briana Williams for the best in the Atlantic Sun.
WE’RE BACK
familiar faces Of 12 nonconference teams on the schedule, the Eagles faced three teams during the 2012-13 season. Those contests resulted in a record of 2-1.
•69-45 win over FIU •79-60 loss to Charlotte •76-70 win over LSU
tough month Of the seven opponents the Eagles faced between November 27 and December 29, five teams appeared in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. After four straight games against tournament teams, the Eagles took on top-tier competition in Saint Francis and Virginia. They finished the streak by playing on a strong Saint Joseph’s team to conclude the nonconference stretch.
HANSEN’S HEROICS Senior Sarah Hansen already holds seven all-time program records (points, total rebounds, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, field goals made, field goals attempted, steals) and is on pace to set three more. Track her progress through each game here.
After travelling to Baton Rouge, La., the Eagles returned to Fort Myers for a lengthy home stand. FGCU hosted the Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic welcomed Saint Joseph’s before opening Atlantic Sun action with home games against Stetson, ETSU and USC Upstate. The Green & Blue won’t wear away jerseys until Thursday, Jan. 16 when they travel to face ETSU.
threes against no. 3 The Eagles faced RPI ranked no. 3 Stanford on Wednesday, Nov. 27 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Green and Blue put up a Hardwood Tournament of Hope single-game record 14 3-point baskets. Although the team fell to the perennial powerhouse, the mark stays as a season-high.
ALL IN All 11 players that have seen playing time this year have put up points for the Eagles. Sarah Hansen currently leads the team with 184 points on the year, while Bethany Murrell has recorded the fewest at nine points.

hitting the century mark In 11 seasons, the Eagles have scored 100 points or more on 10 occasions. Since the transition to Division I, the team has hit the mark three times.
international increase Although the Eagles’ shooting percentage fell during the three-game swing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the Eagles returned to the United States with an increased 3-point shooting percentage.
