AUSTRIAN WEAPON In addition to returning 1,737 points from last year’s team, FGCU head coach Karl Smesko has added Vienna, Austria native Lisa Zderadicka to the roster. The 5-6 guard led Houston Baptist with 11 points per game last year (276 total points). Thus, with her addition, the Eagles have over 2,000 NCAA Division I points from last year available. In addition to her scoring, Zderadicka averaged 4.5 rebounds last year, which was second on the team at Houston Baptist and would have tied China Dow for second on the FGCU roster last year behind Tytionia Adderly.

NEXT UP IN THE NEST In addition to Zderadicka, FGCU added four transfers who will sit out this year due to NCAA Division I transfer rules - three of which either led their school in scoring or finished in the top three last year. Davion Wingate tied for the team-high in scoring at 11.8 PPG for Stony Brook; Keri Jewett-Giles tallied 9.0 PPG for Southern Miss; and Kerstie Phills poured in a teamhigh 13.1 PPG for Wagner en route to NEC Rookie of the Year recognition. Kerstie is the daughter of the late Bobby Phills, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets. The fourth transfer is Tyra Cox, who joined the team mid-year from William & Mary.

UPPERCLASSMEN PRESENCE

BUSINESS TRIP

Among eligible players, this year’s roster features six upperclassmen, including five seniors and one junior. Taylor Gradinjan is the elder statesman on the team with this being her sixth year following two ACL tears to start her career. Jessica Cattani and China Dow are both fifth-year seniors, while Erica Nelson and Rose Julien are in their second season at FGCU following two years at Johnson County CC and Chipola College, respectively, and each player won an NJCAA national title. Lisa Zderadicka, who is a graduate transfer from Houston Baptist, is a fourth-year junior.

Earlier this year, FGCU completed an 8-game, 19-day road trip that saw the team produce a 6-2 record. Included were victories over No. 21 DePaul, FIU, Akron, Kent State, Siena and two-time defending Southland Conference champion Abilene Christian. The lone 2 losses came to No. 8 Ohio State and Belmont, both of which made the NCAA Tournament last year. The team also finished 4th in the Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas Nov. 23-25.

OVERTIME HISTORY FGCU is now 7-6 all-time in the NCAA Division-I era in overtime games following the 89-84 win over No. 21 DePaul on Nov. 23. Three of those games have come against Stetson, and the Eagles hold a 2-1 record in those.

HOME SUPREMACY FGCU is 13-0 in Alico Arena this year. They are one of just 17 NCAA Division-I women’s basketball programs with an unblemished home record, and they are just one of 14 left to do so with 10 or more wins at home.

CONSISTENT SUCCESS FGCU is just one of six programs at the NCAA Division I level to win 25 or more games in each season since 2010-11. The others include: UConn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Stanford and James Madison.

BIG TIME FGCU head coach Karl Smesko, who earned his 400th career victory on Feb. 21, 2015 with a win over USC Upstate, is now 11 wins away from 500. He won his 400th in just 493 games. That’s two faster than legend Geno Auriemma. In his 19th year overall and 16th at FGCU, he has compiled a 489-113 record. In fact, by winning 81.2 percent of his games, he is one of just four active coaches at the NCAA Division I level with at least an .800 career winning percentage - joining UConn’s Geno Auriemma, Baylor’s Kim Mulkey and Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer.

RAINING THREES The team’s moniker Raining Threes isn’t just for show. The team has made an incredible 4,729 3-pointers in 15+ seasons for an average of 9.20 per game. The Eagles are riding a 397-game streak with at least one three ball and have made a long-range shot in 513 of 514 games in program history.

POWER 5 PLIGHTS 2017-18 marks the 11th-straight season FGCU faced an opponent from a Power 5 conference and the 4th-straight season the Eagles took on a B1G foe. This year’s schedule includes Illinois and Ohio State (B1G) and Kentucky (SEC). FGCU is 2-1 in those three, having defeated Illinois and Kentucky.

POWERFUL WINS FGCU has secured a win over at least one team from each of the Power 5 conferences including: ACC: Wake Forest (‘16) Clemson (‘14), VT (‘10, 11, 12) Big 10: Illinois (‘17), Michigan (‘16), Michigan State (‘11), Indiana (‘10) Big 12: Oklahoma State (‘15) SEC: Kentucky (‘17), Auburn (‘15), LSU (‘12), Florida (‘08) Pac 12: Arizona (‘15)

BIG DOGS IN SWFL FGCU has previously hosted 12 teams from a Power 5 conference including Illinois, Michigan, Wake Forest, Auburn, Virginia, Virginia Tech, LSU, Michigan State, Indiana, Florida State and Florida. Of those 12 previous contests, the Eagles earned wins in 10 - defeating Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Auburn, VT, LSU, Michigan State, Florida and Indiana.

Whitney Knight celebrates the final seconds of FGCU’s win over Michigan in the 2016 WNIT semifinal.

State and Belmont along with WNIT teams South Dakota State, Kent State, Abilene Christian, Harvard, Jacksonville and Stetson. The Eagles are 9-3 against those teams so far.

SUNSHINE-STATE SERIES The Eagles hold an impressive record of 151-24 (.862) against in-state opponents through 15+ seasons following the win over North Florida. The team went 11-3 against Sunshine State foes last season and FGCU is scheduled to face Stetson on Feb. 24 for its 10th and final Florida matchup of the season. The FGCU assistant coaching staff, which is all comprised of former Eagles women’s basketball players.

PREPPED FOR THE SIDELINE The ‘Coach Smesko Coaching Tree’ grows bigger each year with a strong group of former players and/ or assistants now among the coaching ranks. On the FGCU sideline alone you’ll nothing but former players: Chelsea Banbury ’07, Chelsea Lyles ’10, Jenna Cobb ’15, Stephanie Haas ‘16 and Amanda Pierce ‘08. Kate (Schrader) Bruce ’07 was on staff at Ohio, but is now the head coach at Walsh University where Jenn Conely ‘07 is in her first year as an assistant. Shannon Murphy ’07 is an assistant at Embry Riddle, and Jaime Gluesing is on staff at Milwaukee. ATLANTIC SUN SUCCESS

FLYING HIGH

The Eagles joined the ASUN for the 2007-08 season and immediately saw success among the ranks. The team has won 6 of the past 7 regular-season championships with a record of 117-7 over that span. The Eagles have won 7 total regular-season championships and have never finished lower than 2nd in the final standings. FGCU holds a record of 167-16 all-time in conference games and maintains a 90-2 record in ASUN games played at Alico Arena.
