Thompson entered the game just eight points shy of 1,000 for his career, and far surpassed that as he broke Fieler’s record of 30 set last month. The junior became the fourth player in program history reach the milestone and just the second in the D-I era (2007-08), with the other being 2013 graduate Sherwood Brown. Thompson matched Fieler’s D-I record of 13 made field goals, coming on 23 attempts, as the 32 points are the 8th most all-time and just five shy of the all-division record of 37 set by two players on three occasions during the first two years of the program’s existence (2002-04). As for Hicks, the redshirt junior matched the all-time program record for rebounds and set the D-I program record as all 19 of his boards came on the defensive end. The Georgia Tech transfer did not score a point, but added five blocks and helped guide the Eagles to a 51-43 rebounding edge over the taller Bulls. Hicks matched the 19 boards Adam Liddell pulled down in FGCU’s final Division-II season in 2006-07.

FGCU is coming off a 68-66 double-overtime loss at USF, which has been talked about nationally for the past two days because of the manner in which it ended. The game concluded on a full-court heave by Jamail Jones and basket by Chase Fieler with .3 seconds remaining, but officials ruled that Fieler’s shot was not a tip-in. With a 7-3 defender guarding Jones on the in-bounds play, the Marquette transfer heaved a pass nearly 100 feet with his right hand perfectly onto a cutting Fieler along the baseline. FGCU’s lone senior leapt in the air, turned his body to face the basket, received the ball and tossed up an effort which hit the side of the rim and bounced through the net.

• Mississippi State is coming off a 78-65 win at home Tuesday against Florida A&M as part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic. • This is the first-ever meeting between FGCU and Mississippi State. FGCU is 0-1 all-time against the SEC, losing last year’s game in the Sweet Sixteen to Florida. • MSU is 1-0 this year against the Atlantic Sun Conference, having beaten Kennesaw State, 78-55.

Officials immediately ruled the basket no good, but then looked at the replay to see if – in their judgment – Fieler had caught the ball and then shot it, something not allowed with .3 seconds or less remaining. Using the replay, officials upheld their original call. Fieler’s shot left his fingertips before the light on the backboard came on; however, NCAA rules dictate that a player cannot catch and shoot a ball with .3 seconds or less on the clock – it can only be a tip-in. If the clock had .4 on it, Fieler’s shot would have counted, forcing what would have been FGCU’s second triple-overtime game in history. YOUTUBE SEARCH: FGCU Men’s Basketball Final Play vs. USF

FGCU ATHLETICS DID YOU KNOW?

• FGCU has won a combined 32 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 6+ years in Division I as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference & Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. • In just 2+ years of Division I postseason eligibility, FGCU has sent 7 teams to the NCAA Tournament, while men’s golf and women’s

swimming have had an individual participate in their respective NCAA Championship each year. • Backed by four Atlantic Sun regular season crowns and four more teams that finished in the top 3 of the conference standings, FGCU swept all three of the a-sun all-sport races in 2012-13. The four A-Sun regular season titles were tied for a league-high, while the Eagles are just the second A-Sun member to sweep the three All-Sport races. • After becoming the first team into the NCAA field of 68 by winning the A-Sun Tournament, the FGCU men’s basketball team became the first no. 15 seed in nCaa tournament history to advance to the sweet 16. The Eagles became the Cinderella of the 2013 dance, as they defeated No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State. The team’s up-tempo style and refreshing charisma resulted in Fort Myers being called “Dunk City.” A

O

• FGCU women’s basketball was just the second A-Sun team to produce a perfect conference regular season in 2011-12, going 18-0, but it became the first to do so in back-to-back seasons with its second straight 18-0 mark in 2012-13. The Eagles A-Sun regular season crown was their third in the last six years. • FGCU’s 53 combined wins in men’s and women’s basketball in 2012-13 was the 9th-best total in the nation, while it joined Duke, Louisville and Gonzaga as the only schools with at least 26 wins in both. • In the fall of 2012, FGCU swept the A-Sun team sports regular season, taking home the men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball crowns. For the second straight year, FGCU was the only Division I school to win its conference regular season and postseason tournament in both men’s and women’s soccer. • FGCU’s student-athletes achieved a record 3.31 Cumulative Gpa in the Spring of 2013 semester.

Set a D-I program record and tied the all-time program record with 19 rebounds - all defensive - while rejecting five shots but did not score at USF (Dec. 17). All six of his games with a block have been multi-rejection contests: 2/2/8/2/4/5. Recorded his first career double-double with a career-high-tying 12 points and thencareer-best 11 rebounds against Ave Maria (Nov. 23). Was one rebound and two blocks shy of the program’s first triple-double versus Eckerd (Nov. 18) as he had a career high in points (12), rebounds (9) and blocks (8), with the eight rejections setting the single-game program record. Played his first game with FGCU since transferring from Georgia Tech, earning the 2013-14 #DunkCity Basketball start at Nebraska (Nov. 8) and grabbing six rebounds and tallying four points. FGCU Individual (as All-ACC of Dec 18, 2013) (2011-12 at Georgia Tech) NamedGame-by-Game to the Academic team (Management major) All games ... saw time in 23 games, missing six games late in the season recovering from mono.
