SCOUTING THE HOME TEAM
SEASON OPENERS:
The Panthers enter the 2013-14 campaign with three returning starters and 11 returning letterwinners. Led by head coach Cindy Russo, the Panthers concluded the 2013-13 season with a record of 12-8 and a Sun Belt mark of 12-8. The team finished third in the conference in their final year before moving to Conference USA. The matchup with FGCU opens the new season for the Panthers.
The Green & Blue is 8-3 all time in season opening contests. The team has won an impressive eight games when beginning the year at Alico Arena but has fallen in both of its two season openers on the road. The losses were at the hands of Saint Leo (2003) and Seton Hall (2011).
FIU IN THE ATLANTIC SUN As a former member of the A-Sun, the Panthers set a precedent for success in the conference. FIU captured regular season championships each year from 1992-98 with seven Championship titles. Prior to FGCU’s run, the Panthers were the only A-Sun team to ever record more than one perfect conference season.
Notable season openers include: •2007: Florida State (95-53 L) •2008: Florida (88-86 W) •2009: UTEP (66-54 W) •2010: Seton Hall (64-57 W) •2012: Warner (100-31 W)
CLASS BREAKDOWN:
EARLY START: The November 8 start date is the earliest the Eagles have ever began a season. The previous mark was November 9, 2007 when FGCU faced Florida State.
KNIGHT’S NIGHT: Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight will return to action against FIU after sitting out last season with an ACL injury. Knight excelled in rehab and preseason practice and will be ready to help the Eagles this season.

NONCONFERENCE COMPETITION:
SIMPLY THE BEST:
The Green & Blue will take on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. Here’s the breakdown.
In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles have set three separate 3-point records.
•350 made 3-pointers
•342 made 3-pointers
(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)
•22 made 3-pointers
(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)
The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.
HANSEN’S HEROICS: Senior Sarah Hansen already holds two all-time program records and is on pace to set 13 more. Track her progress through each game here.
HOT STREAK: With 36 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles hold the second-best conference win streak in the nation. They sit behind only Baylor.

SHE DOESN’T QUIT: Sarah Hansen’s accolades and milestones keep adding up. The senior currently ranks 27th among alltime Atlantic Sun players. She sits 50 points behind the 26th position and 390 points out of the top-10.
ALICO ARENA Since opening its doors in December 2002, Alico Arena has served as the centerpiece of FGCU athletics. In addition to the 4,500 seat basketball and volleyball facility, the arena houses Athletic Department staff offices, 12 locker rooms, a full suite of luxury boxes, a hospitality suite, the Human Performance Athletic Training Center, a fitness center and an auxiliary gym.
FAMILIAR FACES:
EAGLES AT ALICO
Of 12 nonconference teams on the schedule, the Eagles faced three teams during the 2012-13 season. Those contests resulted in a record of 2-1.
• 163-12 in home games • 161-12 in games at Alico Arena • 85-6 in Division I games at Alico Arena • 54-1 in Atlantic Sun games at Alico Arena
•69-45 win over FIU •79-60 loss to Charlotte •76-70 win over LSU
TIME’S TICKING: 2013-14 marks the first season in which a 10-second back court clock will be instituted in NCAA women’s basketball.
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: In 11 seasons, the Eagles have scored 100 points or more on 10 occasions. Since transitioning to Division I, the team has hit the mark three times.
ALICO FAST FACTS • The Eagles compiled a streak of 42 home wins between 2008 and 2011. The streak was the third longest streak in the nation behind perennial powerhouses UConn and Stanford. That’s 45 straight A-Sun wins at home. • The Green & Blue are looking to start a new run at home.
