The Paladins, members of the Southern Conference, have started the season 2-0 with home victories over Sewanee and Gardner-Webb. The 2013-14 campaign marks the 100th season of intercollegiate basketball at Furman University. The Paladins welcome back four of their top six scorers from last year’s team which went 7-24, led by point guard Stephen Croone. Furman features a pair of players with familiar names that have strong roots in sports. Junior guard Aaron O’Neill is the son of former Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees outfielder Paul O’Neill, while William Gates, Jr’s father, William Gates, was the focus of the well-known basketball documentary Hoop Dreams. With its victory over Sewanee in the season opener, Furman is 35-0 against non-NCAA Division I opposition since the beginning of the 1998-99 campaign.

NATIONAL EXPOSURE FGCU already has 10 regular-season games in 2013-14 slated to appear on national or regional television. Prior to this year, the Eagles only had three such games – and only one on national TV – in their six previous seasons as a Division-I member. Additionally, for the first time ever, all home games not on TV will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Friday’s game will be the third consecutive contest on national or regional TV to start the year for the Eagles as it will air live on CSS. FGCU’s first game appeared nationally on the Big Ten Network before Tuesday’s Breakfast at the Beach earlymorning affair was broadcast live on ESPN2.

FGCU ATHLETICS DID YOU KNOW?
• FGCU has won a combined 30 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 6 years in Division I as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference & Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. • In just 2 YEARS of Division I postseason eligibility, FGCU has sent 7 TEAMS to the NCAA Tournament, while men’s golf and women’s
swimming have had an individual participate in their respective NCAA Championship each year. • Backed by four Atlantic Sun regular season crowns and four more teams that finished in the top 3 of the conference standings, FGCU SWEPT all three of the A-SUN ALL-SPORT races in 2012-13. The four A-Sun regular season titles were tied for a league-high, while the Eagles are just the second A-Sun member to sweep the three All-Sport races. • After becoming the first team into the NCAA field of 68 by winning the A-Sun Tournament, the FGCU men’s basketball team became the FIRST NO. 15 SEED IN NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY to advance to the SWEET 16. The Eagles became the Cinderella of the 2013 dance, as they defeated No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State. The team’s up-tempo style and refreshing charisma resulted in Fort Myers being called “Dunk City.” A
O
• FGCU women’s basketball was just the second A-Sun team to produce a perfect conference regular season in 2011-12, going 18-0, but it became the first to do so in back-to-back seasons with its second straight 18-0 mark in 2012-13. The Eagles A-Sun regular season crown was their third in the last six years. • FGCU’s 53 combined wins in men’s and women’s basketball in 2012-13 was the 9TH-BEST total in the nation, while it joined Duke, Louisville and Gonzaga as the only schools with at least 26 wins in both. • In the fall of 2012, FGCU swept the A-Sun team sports regular season, taking home the men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball crowns. For the second straight year, FGCU was the ONLY Division I school to win its conference regular season and postseason tournament in both men’s and women’s soccer. • FGCU’s student-athletes achieved a record 3.31 CUMULATIVE GPA in the Spring of 2013 semester.
