game 12 vs saint joseph’s all-time meetings with saint joe’s FGCU and Saint Joe’s have never met before. The Eagles are 101-34 in all-time first meetings.
Let’s recap After earning a 75-68 win over Saint Francis University, the Eagles finished the Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic with an 85-56 loss to Virginia on Dec. 21. FGCU produced an 11-point lead to open the contest but saw as Virginia cut the Eagles’ advantage and took control of the game midway through the first half with stellar long-range shooting. The Cavaliers never relinquished the lead. “Virginia was just really, really impressive tonight,” said head coach Karl Smesko. “The shooting display that they put on tonight was exceptional. You’re never going to win a game when you give up that type of percentage from the 3-point line. I thought Virginia played an excellent game.” Overall, the Eagles shot 36 percent from the floor, while allowing the Cavaliers to convert 50.9 percent of shots and 64.7 percent of attempts from beyond-thearc. The Eagles matched UVA’s 3-point baskets, each with 11, but shot just 33 percent from distance. The Cavaliers outrebounded FGCU, 41-27, and produced 24 points on 19 Eagle turnovers. Individually, sophomore Kaneisha Atwater (Fort Pierce, Fla./Fort Pierce Westwood High School/VCU) led the Eagles with 13 points. Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds High School) and Stephanie Haas (Avon Lake, Ohio/Magnificat High School) also contributed double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

nonconference competition
nearing the top
The Green & Blue will take on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. Here’s the breakdown.
Sarah Hansen’s accolades and milestones keep adding up. The senior currently ranks 16th among all-time Atlantic Sun players with 1,571 points. She sits 27 points behind the 15th position and 225 points out of the top-10.
giving charity With a new emphasis on hand check rules, there is a common perception this season that there are more fouls called and in turn more free-throws awarded. However, since the transition to Division I in 2007, the Eagles have averaged 18.15 free throw attempts per game, and this season they have gone to the charity stripe an average of 19.1 times. The number of free throws made and attempted each year has fluctuated. Here we see that this year the number is not out of line with past seasons.
hot streak With 36 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles hold the second-best conference win streak in the nation. They sit behind only Baylor.
SIMPLY THE BEST In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles have set three separate 3-point records.
•350 made 3-pointers
•342 made 3-pointers
(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)
•22 made 3-pointers
(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)
The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.

UP NEXT: A-SUN ACTION - STETSON After finishing the nonconference slate with Sunday’s game against Saint Joseph’s, the Eagles will begin the Atlantic Sun schedule with a home matchup against Stetson on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Hatters currently top the A-Sun standings with a record of 8-4. Stetson has produced strong wins over Stephen F. Austin, Indiana State, Florida A&M, Charlotte, Murray State and Nicholls State. The team is riding a three-game win streak and will not play again before Saturday’s game. Individually, the Hatters are led by Sasha Sims, a 2013 Preseason All-Atlantic Sun selection. Sims is averaging 18.3 points per game and is shooting over 50 percent from the field. The Hatters add double-digit scoring efforts from four others for a combined points per game of 79.2 for the team. Saturday’s game will bring back strong memories for both teams as the rivals faced off in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship game where the Hatters defeated FGCU 70-64 to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
