Less than 48 hours removed from picking up its second straight win, FGCU begins a streak of four consecutive road games on Saturday with showdown against Conference USA foe SMU at 2 p.m. ET. The trip to the Dallas area is the second of the young season for the Eagles, who dropped a heartbreaker, 7372, at TCU in the season opener. Since then, FGCU has ripped off a pair of victories, the first under head coach Andy Enfield. A win would give the Green and Blue their second-ever three-game non-conference win streak and their most victories in November since joining Division I in 2007-08.
ALL-TIMESERIES
Saturday will be the second meeting between the two schools. SMU took the only meeting on Nov. 21, 2009 at Moody Coliseum by a 79-62 margin. Just a combined four players from the two teams are currently on this year's roster that played in the contest in 2009. The Mustangs are the only Conference USA team that FGCU has ever played, while SMU head coach Matt Doherty spent one season in the Atlantic Sun as the head coach of FAU in 2005-06.
SECONDHALFSURGE
Led by the play of freshman point guard BRETT COMER, FGCU has overcome a sluggish first half in each game by averaging 42.3 points over the final 20 minutes. Comer has been the catalyst to the second half turnaround, averaging 12.0 points over the span while passing out 14 assists that have led to 36 more points. As a team, FGCU is shooting a scalding 60 percent (46-77) in the second half, including 14of-26 from three-point land. Nine of the 10 FGCU players who have taken a shot in the final 20 minutes are shooting 50 percent or better, while Comer has a hand in 57 percent of the points scored.

Led by sixth-year head coach Matt Doherty, SMU enters with a 1-2 record after a heartbreaking 54-52 loss to Fresno State in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-off on Tuesday. The Mustangs are coming off a 20-win campaign in 2010-11 that resulted a run to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Last season, SMU led Conference USA in three-pointers per game and scoring defense, and is back at it again this season. Led by senior sharpshooter Robert Nyakundi, the Mustangs are making 8.3 threes per contest in the young season. Tabbed the Best Shooter in Conference USA by Sporting News, the 6-foot-8 Nyakundi is a preseason All-Conference choice and leads the team in scoring at 11.7 points per contest. Nyakundi made 97 threes as a junior, leading SMU to a program record 277 long range field goals. Nevada transfer London Giles ranks second on the team in scoring (11.0) early in his first official season with SMU. The Mustangs' starting five also sports a pair of impressive freshmen in Jalen Jones and Cannen Cunningham. Jones reached double figures in the first two games, while Cunningham made his first start against Fresno State, going for 17 points and nine rebounds. RECORD (A-SUN)
GAME4 AT SMU (NOV. 19)
LAST GAME: Defense, Freshmen Kick-Start Big Second Half Push
(Box Score on Page 27) FORT MYERS, Fla. - Led by freshman BRETT COMER’S first career double-double and a strong second half defensive effort, the FGCU men’s basketball team picked up its second straight win with a 68-59 victory against Prairie View A&M on Thursday night at Alico Arena. • FGCU outscored Prairie View A&M 38-25 and limited the Panthers to just 8-of-36 from the field over the final 20 minutes en route to improving to 2-1 under first-year head coach Andy Enfield. The loss is the first of the season for Prairie View (2-1). • A trio of freshmen led FGCU in scoring with Comer’s double-double coming on 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals over 35 minutes of action. Comer did a majority of his damage in the second half comeback, scoring 11 points and while dishing out six assists. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON contributed 13 points, while Cvjeticanin was perfect from the field, going 3-of-3, including two from long range, to add 10 points off the bench. • The Eagles held a five-point lead, 59-54, with just under three minutes to play, before putting the game away with eight straight points that gave the home team its largest lead of the game (13), 67-54, and its second home win in four days.
NEW COACH NEW HOPES
On March 31st, the FGCU men’s basketball program got a new look for its 10th season in program history when ANDY ENFIELD was named head coach. Enfield, who spent the previous five years as an assistant with Florida State, is the second head coach in FGCU’s brief history. While at FSU, Enfield was a part of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and back-toback clubs that lead the NCAA in defensive field goal percentage.
INSTANT IMPACT
FGCU's freshmen class has wasted little time making an impact, accounting for 50 percent of the scoring, 35 percent of the rebounds and 68 percent of the assists. Point guard BRETT COMER and combo-guard BERNARD THOMPSON rank first and second on the team in scoring at 14.7 and 12.7 points, respectively. Comer is also the team's top assist man with 6.3 helpers per contest. Thompson's 12.7 points are joined by 5.3 rebounds per game. The duo has each scored in double figures the first three games and was joined by classmate FILIP CVJETICANIN in the win over Prairie View A&M on Thursday.
WE'LL PICK YOU UP
Through three games, FGCU owns a 89-54 advantage in bench points, good for a +11.6 margin per game. The bench has supplied a double figure scorer in all three games, including the team's leading scorer on two occasions. Junior SHERWOOD BROWN came off the pine against Ave Maria for a team seasonhigh 19 points in a win over Gyrenes.
SHARP SHOOTING
Fueled by a 60 percent clip in the second half this season, FGCU leads the Atlantic Sun with a 50.6 percent field goal percentage. The Eagles topped the 50-percent plateau in each of their first two games, while also leading the league in three-point field goal percentage (.407) and ranking second in threes per game (7.3). Sophomore CHASE FIELER is 5-of-6 from long range.
FAST START
Ranking among the top 10 in the Atlantic Sun Conference in four statistical categories, freshman BRETT COMER is off to a fast start early in the year. Highlighted by a 10-assist effort against Prairie View, Comer leads the A-Sun in assists per game (6.3). He has reached double figures in all three games, resulting in a teamhigh 14.7 points per game, good for fourth in the conference.
SEEING DOUBLE
Freshman BRETT COMER has taken the reigns of the point guard position in his first season as an Eagle and on Thursday recorded the team's first double-double of the season. The Winter Park, Fla. product, who was the point guard alongside current Duke freshman Austin Rivers, went for 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals in the win over Prairie View A&M.

WITH A WIN ... • • • •
The Eagles would be off to their best start in Division I history. FGCU would own just its second three-game non-conference win streak since joining Division I in 2007-08. Set a record for most wins (3) in November during D-1 era. Would give the Eagles their first road win under new head coach Andy Enfield.
SWEET NOVEMBER
FGCU will play seven games over 17-day span to open the season. Out of those seven games, five will come on the road, including two trips to Texas. The last four games of the month will come away from home in Texas, Miami and Maryland.
D-1 TESTED & APPROVED
On August 12, 2011, all 14 of FGCU’s Division I sports became postseason eligible when the NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved the recommendation from the NCAA Division I Administration Cabinet to elect FGCU to Division I active membership. FGCU began its transition into Division I in 2007-08. The Eagles are now eligible for Atlantic Sun postseason play and NCAA Tournament.
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS
FGCU was predicted to finish in eighth place in both preseason Atlantic Sun polls voted on by the league coaches and media. The Eagles finished with a 7-13 mark in the A-Sun last season, which was good for seventh place and a spot in the postseason tournament, if they were eligible.
BOMBS AWAY
Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL ranked second in the A-Sun in three-pointers per game (2.6) in his rookie campaign, making total of 78 on the season. His 78 threes were the fifth-most by a freshman in the entire country and the fourth-best total in program history. Varidel made three or more trifectas in a game 16 times and accounted for 45 percent of the team’s long range makes on the year. The Versoix, Switzerland product finished second on the team in scoring (11.2) and was named to the A-Sun All-Freshmen squad.
MR. FEBRUARY
Sparked by a career-high 26 points in last year's season finale at USC Upstate, junior SHERWOOD BROWN finished last February (10 games) with a 11.2 scoring average - more than four points above his season mark. Brown reached double figures in each of the final four games, averaging 18.3 points while leading the team in scoring three times. Through the first three games this season, Brown has carried that momentum over with an average of 11.0 points and a team-best 5.7 rebounds. The Orlando, Fla. product came off the bench for 19 points in the win over Ave Maria.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Despite having just four players over 6-foot-8, FGCU has one of the biggest players in the A-Sun Conference manning its frontline in 6-foot-10, 254-lb. forward KEVIN CANTINOL. The senior came on strong over the final 10 months of last season after becoming eligible mid-year after transferring from SEC foe Mississippi. Cantinol averaged 7.9 and 6.3 rebounds over the last 10 games despite making just four starts. Over the final 10 games, Cantinol led the team in rebounding five times and collected 27 offensive caroms.

FGCU’s roster will not only have a new look on the sideline, but also on the court as first-year head coach Andy Enfield ushered in six new players. Included in the six newcomers are five freshmen, giving the Eagles a total of nine underclassmen. The talented freshmen class includes a quartet of guards and 6-foot9 small forward FILIP CVJETICANIN from Croatia.

YOUTH MOVEMENT
The 10-member Atlantic Sun Conference was lauded by CBS College Sports as the 17th-best Division I men's basketball conference, according to the media outlet's preseason rankings. Last year, Belmont represented the A-Sun in the NCAA Tournament, while Jacksonville and ETSU played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The second half of the 2010-11 season was a youth movement for the Eagles, as underclassmen led the team in scoring 18 of out the last 20 games. Then-freshman CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL was the catalyst, leading the team in scoring eight times over the 20 games. Redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS, who transferred out, led the team in scoring six times over the span. Then sophomore SHERWOOD BROWN used a 26-point outing in the season finale at USC Upstate to cap a run of three of four games he led the team.
HEATING UP
Not equipped with a lot of size in the paint, FGCU made up for it by staying active on the offensive glass in 2010-11. The Eagles finished second in the A-Sun in offensive rebounds per game (13.2). FGCU has grabbed double figure offensive boards in 52 of its last 59 games (last 2 years), including 26 last season. The Green and Blue finished 2010-11 with a streak of eight straight games with double figure offensive caroms.

Just two nights before his first official game as FGCU men’s basketball coach, ANDY ENFIELD announced that DAJUAN GRAF (Charlotte, N.C./Phillip O. Berry Academy) has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) on the first day of the early signing period and will join the Eagles in 2012-13. Graf, a 6-foot point guard, is a rising senior at Phillip O. Berry Academy where he has led the Cardinals to a 51-11 record and a pair of North Carolina Section 2A Championships over the last two seasons. “We’re excited to add a player of DaJuan’s caliber to our program,” said Enfield. “His quickness, ball-handling ability and decision-making skills are exactly what we are looking for in a point guard. We expect him to fit in well with our other talented players and look forward to him joining our FGCU family.” As a junior last season, Graf averaged a team-highs of 15.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game en route to leading Phillip O. Berry Academy to a 27-3 record and its second straight N.C. Section 2A Championship. Graf was named the Rocky River Conference Player of the Year and an All-Western Region squad selection. His 15.4 points per game were fueled by 22 double figure outings and seven 20-point performances, including a career-high 36-point outing in the season opener against Garinger. A multi-faceted guard, Graf also average 4.5 rebounds, had three double-doubles, seven performances of six or more boards and reached the foul line 10 times in a game five times. Graf’s starting point guard duties began his sophomore season when he led the Cardinals to a 24-8 mark and the first of his two Section 2A Championships. He burst onto the scene by averaging 13.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.1 steals per contest. Graf reached double figures in 25 of 32 games, scoring 20 or more points three times to go along with a trio of double-doubles.

HEADCOACHANDYENFIELD BIO
Andy Enfield was appointed the second-ever head coach in Florida Gulf Coast men’s basketball history on March 31, 2011. Enfield will lead the program into its 10th season of existence and first as Division I postseason eligible in 2011-12. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Andy, Amanda, and the rest of the Enfield family into FGCU, Southwest Florida, and our Eagles’ athletics family,” said Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “A quality individual, Andy is a proven winner and brings to FGCU a tremendous wealth of experience and coaching success, on the both the collegiate and professional ranks. “In particular, he possesses a background of demonstrated commitment to excellence both on the court and in the classroom. In turn, we look forward to him providing energized daily leadership to our student-athletes, quickly getting engaged with our growing fan base and rapidly putting us in pursuit of the upper echelon of the Atlantic Sun Conference and beyond.” Enfield spent the previous five years as an assistant coach at Florida State, helping FSU to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (2009-11), including the Sweet 16 in 2011. Enfield joined head coach Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Florida State in 2006. The Seminoles appearances in the last three NCAA Tournaments were the program’s first since 1998, as they accumulated 31 wins in ACC action over that span – second-most behind Duke – and advanced to the program’s first-ever ACC championship game in 2009. With three straight 20-win seasons to its credit, FSU advanced to the 2011 Sweet 16 in the Southwest Region by defeating No. 10 Texas A&M and No. 2 Notre Dame in Chicago. 14
Recruiting and player development were chief among Enfield’s responsibilities at FSU where its 2010-11 roster boasted 11 top 100 recruits and a pair of McDonald’s All-Americans. In 2009, Basketball Times named Enfield the nation’s “Most Visible Assistant Coach” for the summer recruiting period, while ESPN The Magazine donned him one of “Five Super Assistant Coaches in College Basketball” during the 2008-09 campaign. Enfield’s prowess on the recruiting trails helped the Seminoles produce three straight top 25 classes, highlighted by the 2008 group that ranked in the top 10. A former NBA assistant with the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, Enfield’s influence helped FSU develop five NBA draft picks over five seasons. Al Thornton (2007) and Toney Douglas (2009) were both selected in the first round and earned Associated Press All-American status while leading the ACC in scoring. In 2011, Chris Singleton became the Noles’ third first round pick in the last five years when the Washington Wizards took him with the 18th overall pick. A key ingredient to FSU’s success was its ability to play defense, as the Seminoles became the first team since the 1990-92 Georgetown clubs to lead the nation in defensive field goal percentage two straight seasons from 2009-11. In 2010-11, the Seminoles limited their opponents to 36.3 percent shooting from the field to lead the nation for the second year in a row. With Singleton and Douglas, FSU had the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in two of Enfield’s last three seasons, while 2010 NBA second round pick Solomon Alabi was runner-up.
GAME4 AT SMU (NOV. 19)
Prior to his five years in Tallahassee, Enfield began his coaching career in the NBA from 1994-1996 where he served as the shooting coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and head coach Mike Dunleavy. While in Milwaukee, Enfield worked with four-time NBA All-Star Vin Baker and No. 1 overall pick Glenn Robinson. Enfield continued his NBA career as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics under head coach Rick Pitino from 1998-2000. Enfield worked closely with then-rookie Paul Pierce who went on to win the 2008 NBA Finals MVP award. With the Celtics, Enfield increased his duties on the bench to developing game plans and scouting reports, assisting in practice strategies and offensive player development. Known for his shooting expertise, Enfield helped the Celtics shoot 74.5 percent from the free throw line in 19992000, a 5.3 percent increase from the previous year for the biggest improvement in the league. After his stint with the Boston Celtics, Enfield became a player development consultant for several NBA teams, while running his own company called “All Net Basketball” which focused on improving shooting technique and offensive skills. Over his time as a consultant and shooting instructor, Enfield coached more than 100 NBA players. During his collegiate playing career at Johns Hopkins University, Enfield set the all-time NCAA career free-throw percentage record with a mark of 92.5 percent (431-466). Enfield still holds nine career records at Johns Hopkins and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He led the team in scoring in all four seasons en route to a program record 2,025 career points thanks to the top two single-season point totals in school history with 606 points in 1990 and 610 points in 1991.
As good as he was on the court, he was just as sharp in the classroom, as the economics major earned GTE Academic All-America first team honors as a senior and second team honors as a junior. He was the first basketball player at Johns Hopkins to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was named the NABC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1991. Enfield and his wife Amanda, have two daughters; Aila and Lily, and son, Marcum. FGCU - 78 Saint Leo - 59
TCU - 73 FGCU - 72
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Behind a decisive 15-0 run midway through the second half and a 48 percent shooting night, the FGCU men’s basketball team defeated Saint Leo 78-59 in an exhibition game on Saturday at Alico Arena. Led by a game-high 16 points from senior KEVIN CANTINOL, (pictured) three FGCU players reached double figures and two more scored nine points to highlight the balanced scoring attack. Cantinol’s 16 points came on 8-of-12 from the field, while he also added a team-high eight boards. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON added 14 points and sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL poured in 12 off the bench. The Eagles hit 31-of-65 from the field for the game, including 10-of-23 (44 percent) from long range as six different players registered a three-pointer. All nine of freshman Filip Cvjeticanin’s points came on threes (3-6), while Varidel and junior Sherwood Brown hit a pair of treys each. It was a game of runs, as the Eagles reeled off four scoring spurts of seven or more consecutive points finished off by the 15-0 run that turned a two-point lead, 48-46, with 11:01 on the clock into 63-46 advantage with 5:46 remaining. The FGCU defense was the difference during the decisive run, as the Eagles held the Lions without a point for eight straight possessions thanks to six turnovers. Thompson scored the opening five points and assisted on a three-pointer.
FORT WORTH, Texas - Despite trailing by as many as 16 early in the second half, FGCU fought all the way back and had several chances to take the lead in the final seconds, but came up short in a 73-72 seasonopening loss at TCU on Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Freshman point BRETT COMER quickly pushed the ball up the court and executed a dribble-handoff to Brown, who knocked down a three with 4.8 seconds on the clock to make it a one-point game, at 73-72. FGCU quickly fouled Thorn on the ensuing inbound pass after a timeout to put the All-Mountain West point guard at the foul line. Thorns’ front end of the 1-and-1 missed to the right and the rebound was tipped into the corner where FGCU failed to get off a desperation shot. Three different players reached double figures for the Eagles, led by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON’S (pictured) 15 points off the bench. Thompson poured in 11 of his 15 in the first half, while adding six rebounds and four assists. The catalyst of the second half comeback, Comer had a hand in 24 of FGCU’s 41 points in the final frame. Comer finished the game with 12 points and five assists with all but two of the points coming over the final 20 minutes. Sophomore CHASE FIELER turned in a clean stat line with 12 points on 4-of-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from long range, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Sparked by 15 second half points from freshman BRETT COMER (pictured) and SHERWOOD BROWN’S 19 points off the bench, FGCU picked up its first win under head coach Andy Enfield against Ave Maria, 79-64, in front of 1,547 fans in the home opener at Alico Arena Monday night. FGCU created its first real separation of the game midway through the final frame, going on a 17-2 run over a seven-minute period that took what was a six-point lead and turned it into a the largest edge of the game (21), 58-37, for the Eagles with 9:02 play. Brown scored 10 of his 19 points in the first half, sinking 3-of-6 from three-point land, while also adding six rebounds and three steals. It was Comer’s turn in the second half, as the Winter Park, Fla. product reached double figures over the final 20 minutes alone for the second straight game. Comer finished 7-of-10 from the field for 17 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and four assists. After shooting just 31 percent in the first half, the Eagles shot a sweltering 69 percent (18-26) from the floor in the second frame en route to 48 points. FGCU’s finished above 50 percent for the second consecutive contest with a 52 percent clip (31-60). FGCU took advantage of its superior size to own a 44-27 advantage on the backboard and a 34-16 edge in points in the paint.
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Led by freshman BRETT COMER’S first career doubledouble and a strong second half defensive effort, FGCU picked up its second straight win with a 68-59 victory against Prairie View A&M on Thursday night at Alico Arena. For the third straight game, Comer reached double figure points in the second half alone, sparking a 12-2 run that turned a 39-33 Panther lead into a 45-41 FGCU advantage that it would never relinquish. Comer accounted for four points during the run and assisted on both three-pointers by classmate FILIP CVJETICANIN and sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL. The Eagles held a five-point lead, 59-54, with just under three minutes to play, before putting the game away with eight straight points that gave the home team its largest lead of the game (13), 67-54, and its second home win in four days. FGCU outscored Prairie View A&M 38-25 and limited the Panthers to just 8-of-36 from the field over the final 20 minutes. A trio of freshmen led FGCU in scoring with Comer’s doubledouble coming on 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals over 35 minutes of action. Comer did a majority of his damage in the second half comeback, scoring 11 points and while dishing out six assists. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) contributed 13 points, while Cvjeticanin was perfect from the field, going 3-of-3, including two from long range, to add 10 points off the bench.
