ALL-TIME MEETINGS WITH USM Saturday’s game will be the first time the Eagles and the Golden Eagles meet. The Green and Blue have won 99 games against opponents in first meetings since 2002 with just 30 losses in introductary meetings.
LET’S RECAP The Eagles earned a 78-73 win over Conference USA foe Charlotte on Wednesday, Nov. 20. After starting the contest with a 7-0 deficit, the Green and Blue responded to take control of play. The Eagles were challenged several times through the game but never relinquished the lead. In a scoring frenzy that ended the game, the Eagles outscored the 49ers, 17-14, in the final four minutes of play to seal the fivepoint win.

SCOUTING THE HOME TEAM
HOME OPENERS:
Southern Miss will welcome the Eagles to the Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday evening with a record of 3-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles have picked up wins at home against West Alabama, South Alabama and Arkansas-Little Rock but lost to Hampton, 74-58, in their only road game this season.
The Green & Blue is 9-3 all time in season opening contests. The team holds an impressive record of 11-1 in all-time home openers with just one loss at the hands of Florida State (2007).
As a unit, the Golden Eagles are shooting .462 from the field with a .278 shooting percentage from beyond-the-arc. They have outscored opponents, 81-61.5 through four contests and have outrebounded foes 40-37.8. USM has forced an average of 25 turnovers, while turning the ball over 16 times per game themselves. Individually, senior point guard Jamierra Faulkner has facilitated a strong offensive attack with 47 assists through just four games, while also adding 14.3 points. Faulker leads the team in 3-point shooting percentage, assists and steals. Junior forward Tamara Jones leads all players with 23.5 points per game this season and recorded a career-high 41 points against Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday. Jones also leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per contest.

KNIGHT’S NIGHT: 3-0: The Eagles earned their third-consecutive win against Charlotte at home to open the seasonw ith a 3-0 record. 2013-14 marks the first time the Eagles have started the season at 3-0 since 2010, when the squad started the season with a 14-game win streak.
Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight returned to action against FIU after sitting out last season with an ACL injury. Knight excelled with a career-high 25 points and three blocks and has since averaged a team-leading 18 points per game.

The Eagles picked up numerous preseason awards with senior Sarah Hansen leading the way. Hansen was named the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, the Atlantic Sun Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year and the College Sports Madness Preseason Player of the Year. Sophomore Whitney Knight earned Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference nod, while DyTeisha Dunson was voted by the fans as the Defensive Preseason Player of the Year. Head Coach Karl Smesko was named the Preseason Coach of the Year by College Sports Madness to begin the year.
After transferring from VCU this summer, sophomore Kaneisha Atwater filed a waiver with the NCAA in hopes of playing immediately. Atwater’s appeal was approved by the NCAA on Nov. 1, eliminating the mandated waiting period.
EARLY START: The November 8 start date was the earliest the Eagles have ever began a season. The previous mark was November 9, 2007 when FGCU faced Florida State.

FGCU has paced the A-Sun in 3-point shooting in recent history. The team recorded the top 3-pointers per game in the last six seasons and maintained the highest 3-point percentage in five-straight years.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Eagles’ offensive ability is evident in their style of play, but the team has also led the A-Sun in defense in each of the last four years. FGCU has held foes to an average of just 55.3 points per game in that span.

SHE DOESN’T QUIT: Sarah Hansen’s accolades and milestones keep adding up. The senior currently ranks 27th among alltime Atlantic Sun players. She sits 16 points behind the 26th position and 332 points out of the top-10.
ALICO ARENA Since opening its doors in December 2002, Alico Arena has served as the centerpiece of FGCU athletics. In addition to the 4,500 seat basketball and volleyball facility, the arena houses Athletic Department staff offices, 12 locker rooms, a full suite of luxury boxes, a hospitality suite, the Human Performance Athletic Training Center, a fitness center and an auxiliary gym.

ALICO FAST FACTS • The Eagles compiled a streak of 42 home wins between 2008 and 2011. The streak was the third longest streak in the nation behind perennial powerhouses UConn and Stanford.
