let’s recap

SCOUTING THE VISITING TEAM

Led by double-digit scoring performances from four separate players, the FGCU women’s basketball team defeated ETSU 73-58 Thursday night at Alico Arena.

• The Spartans of USC Upstate travel to Fort Myers from Spartansburg, S.C. with a record of 6-8 on the year and a mark of 1-2 in Atlantic Sun play. The Spartans recently dropped a 78-64 loss to Stetson after beginning the season with a loss to Northern Kentucky and win over Lipscomb.

The Bucs and Eagles battled for the lead early in the game before sophomore Whitney Knight singlehandedly put together a nine-point run to give the Eagles the lead midway through the first half. The Eagles extended their lead to 10 points late in the half but allowed the Bucs to challenge them before the break. Six quick points to open the second half gave the Green and Blue a momentum it would never give up. The Eagles extended their lead to a game-high 25 points and ultimately earned a 73-58 victory. Knight led all players with 21 points on the night, while Stephanie Haas added 17. The pair had each had seven made field goals with three made shots from long range.

• As a unit, the Spartans are averaging 64.5 points per game, while allowing foes to score 73.4 points per contest. The team is shooting 37.6 percent from the field with a 25 percent clip from 3-point range. The Upstate defense has held opponents to 40.4 percent from the floor and 30.3 percent from long range. The team has pulled down 40.3 rebounds per game, while turning the ball over an average of 17.6 times. • The group is led by 6-0 sophomore Brittany Starling, who averages 11.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. The post player has converted 51.2 percent of shots this season but leads the team with 33 turnovers. In Thursday’s game against the Hatters, USC Upstate saw strong performances from junior Shelby Hicks, junior Lauren Bogle and sophomore Brittany Clency. After averaging 5.0 points through 13 games, Hicks led the team with 11 points, while the duo of Bogle and Clency each added 10 points in the team’s loss. • The Spartans finished the 2012-13 season with a record of 12-18 and a conference record of 8-10 and missed the Atlantic Sun Championship tournament. The team was selected to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun in this year’s preseason poll.

nonconference competition

nearing the top

The Green & Blue took on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. They went 6-6. Here’s the breakdown.

Sarah Hansen’s accolades and milestones keep adding up. The senior currently ranks 14th among all-time Atlantic Sun players with 1,639 points. She sits two points behind the 14th position and 173 points out of the top-10. Hansen also ranks 29th in all-time rebounds at 741 boards.

giving charity With a new emphasis on hand check rules, there is a common perception this season that there are more fouls called and in turn more free-throws awarded. However, since the transition to Division I in 2007, the Eagles have averaged 18.15 free throw attempts per game, and this season they have gone to the charity stripe an average of 20 times per game. The number of free throws made and attempted each year has fluctuated. Here we see that this year the number is not out of line with past seasons.

hot streak With 37 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles hold the third-best conference win streak in the nation. They sit behind only Baylor and Weber State.

SIMPLY THE BEST In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles have set three separate 3-point records.

•350 made 3-pointers

•342 made 3-pointers

(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)

•22 made 3-pointers

(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)

The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.

Five active NCAA Division I coaches currently hold win percentages of over .800. Smesko joins Geno Auriemma (UConn), Kim Mulkey (Baylor), Tara VanDerveer (Stanford) & Matt Bollant (Illinois) in the elite group.

Hansen’s 28-point performance against Saint Joseph’s was the senior’s 17th 20+ point game of her career. The mark is tied with Mercer’s Briana Williams for the best in the Atlantic Sun.

After travelling to Baton Rouge, La., the Eagles returned to Fort Myers for a lengthy home stand. FGCU hosted the Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic welcomed Saint Joseph’s before opening Atlantic Sun action with home games against Stetson, ETSU and USC Upstate. The Green & Blue won’t wear away jerseys until Thursday, Jan. 16 when they travel to face ETSU.
