Xavier will be the latest test in a challenging non-conference docket for the Eagles. FGCU has already defeated four 20-win teams from a season ago (UC Santa Barbara, Ohio, San Francisco, Massachusetts) and another (South Dakota State) which won 19 contests. The Eagles – who can add another 20-win opponent to that list with a victory over Xavier – will play five teams in their non-conference schedule which rank in the top 80 of the current RPI (Green Bay (40), Massachusetts (65), Xavier (78), Pittsburgh (78) and Iona (80)). In total, FGCU will play seven non-conference games against teams currently ranked in the top-120 of the RPI (twice versus UC Santa Barbara (117)). FGCU (120) is the highest-ranked A-Sun team in the RPI (North Florida (147)).

FGCU is 35-4 at Alico Arena since the start of the 2012-13 season. The four losses have come to Lipscomb, Iona, Mercer and FIU, snapping – respectively – a four-game home-court winning streak, a nine-game run, another nine-game streak, a 12-game stretch and a four-game run. FGCU is 5-1 this year and went 15-2 last year and 15-1 in 2012-13.

35-4

Furthermore, against non-conference opponents during the regular season, FGCU is 23-2 versus such foes at The Nest since 2011-12. The Green and Blue went 5-0 in 2011-12, 7-0 in 2012-13, 6-1 in 2013-14 and is 5-1 so far this season. The loss to Iona snapped a 15-game winning streak at Alico against non-conference opponents.

FGCU led the Atlantic Sun Conference in defense last year, allowing opponents to score just 66.8 points per game. The Atlantic Sun Conference has been the talk of the college basketball world the last two postseasons as FGCU and Mercer (now a Southern Conference member) have both been responsible for three major upsets in the NCAA Tournament, affectionately turning the A-Sun into the A-Stun.

FGCU is the only school in the Atlantic Sun Conference which has won an A-Sun Men’s Basketball Championship. Conference re-alignment has drastically altered the landscape of collegiate athletics, and the A-Sun is no different. The Eagles joined the league in 2007-08 with USC Upstate, and prior to that North Florida and Kennesaw State both joined for the 2005-06 season. Lipscomb has been a member since 2003-04, Jacksonville since 1998-99 and Stetson since 1986-87. Northern Kentucky is in its third year in the A-Sun after joining in 2012-13 and has two years (including this season) of its NCAAmandated Division-I reclassification period remaining.

Dating back to the 2011-12 season, FGCU has won 26 consecutive games when outscoring its opponents in the paint by at least 15 points. Fueled by their high-flying Dunk City attack, the Eagles were 12-0 when holding at least a +15 margin in the paint in 2012-13, 11-0 in 2013-14 and 1-0 to start this year. FGCU won two such games in 2011-12, with the last loss coming on Nov. 25, 2011, at Maryland (73-67) despite the Eagles out-scoring the then-ACC member in the paint by 16 points, 42-26.

Men’s tennis junior Jordi Vives represented FGCU at the NCAA Championship for the FIRST TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY, winning his first match and reaching the Round of 32. • FGCU’s student-athletes achieved a higher GPA (3.24) than the overall student body in Spring of 2014 for the 11th straight semester. • Backed by four A-Sun regular-season crowns and four more teams that finished in the top 3 of the conference standings, FGCU SWEPT all three of the A-SUN ALL-SPORT races in 2012-13. • After becoming the first team into the NCAA field of 68 by winning the A-Sun Tournament in 2013, the FGCU men’s basketball team became the FIRST NO. 15 SEED IN NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY to advance to the SWEET SIXTEEN. Dunk City became the Cinderella of the 2013 dance, as the high-flying Eagles defeated No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State. • For the second-straight year in 2012, FGCU was the ONLY D-I school to win its conference regular season and postseason tournament in both men’s and women’s soccer.

Broke the program record for blocks in a game with eight against Eckerd on Nov. 18 ... finished third in program history with an average of 1.2 blocks per game … finished STAT CREW SYSTEM fourth in program history withTHE 42 blocks on the season … both his 42 blocks and FGCU Individual Game-by-Game (as of Dec 26, 2014) average of 1.2 blocks per game ranked fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference … his All games eight-block game against Eckerd marked the most blocks in a game by any player in the A-Sun last season.
