Historical Fiction - Events in the 20th Century HC0419

This workshop will discuss how fictional characters are introduced into historical settings, permitting the reader to experience the emotional and physical demands of living through historical events. Using Thomas Williams' novel, “West into the Rising Sun,” you will hear an abridged historical description of the event and “meet" the key character. Pan Am began flying across the Pacific using Martin Flying Boats in 1937. The steward on the Clipper, as the Martin Flying Boats were called, is the character we will use to experience what it was like to fly to China. This service also permitted the flow of money to China to support the war against Japan. Being a money courier was a dangerous job. What did it really feel like to be in such peril? If you were a woman, did you approach the danger differently? This three dimensional introduction of the human face and emotions is what makes historical fiction so much fun to write and read. He has worked as an editorial writer, city editor, reporter, and columnist for several newspapers. Steven Derfler, Ph.D., is a Professor of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Sharon Fultz is a Tai Chi practitioner and has been an instructor since 1995. Chrisanna Harrington, LMHC, works with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues. She approaches therapy from a scientific stand point that nutrition affects all cellular function. Essentially, without proper nutrition the nerves and brain just do not function properly. Ellsworth John La Coste, Ph.D., is the author of eight books and has over 30 years of experience as a genealogist. Robert N. Macomber is an award-winning and internationally acclaimed author, lecturer, and TV commentator. Carol Mahler is a storyteller, singer-songwriter, author, and teacher. Carol Mahler founded the Peace River Center for Writers and has served as scholar, discussion leader, and project director for public humanities programs. Jeanna Morrow feels as though she was reborn at 50 when her husband introduced her to Latin dance. She had never danced before. She attended classes for 2 years and then earned the Zumba Basic Instructor certification. Cate Peterson has been a Florida Master Gardener for four years. She has also been a member of the Caloosahatchee Bromeliad Society for 2 years. Robert Peterson, Ph.D., has over 30 years of experience in training managers and supervisors of several major Fortune 500 companies. He is a former professional jazz musician. Spencer Pullen began his photography career 14 years ago, having received his degree in Interactive Media and Graphic Design from the International Academy of Design in Tampa. He currently owns Premiere Graphics in Port Charlotte and is a sought-after instructor for anyone interested in learning photography. Jamie Reynolds is a 26-year resident of Charlotte County, now is retired from Edison State College, and teaches as a volunteer in the Florida Master Naturalist Program. She is a Master Gardener and an outings leader for nature walks and paddling trips for the Sierra Club. Lee Stein learned the love of film from growing up in a family that owned a theater. He is the Executive Director on the Board of The Charlotte Chorale. Michael Stevens is an architect, Florida Master Gardner, and the Chair of TEAM Punta Gorda Community Garden Commitee. Roger Strube, M.D., spent thirty-six years in medical education, training, practice, and health care administration. As a health care insider, he developed a unique perspective on medical care delivery and financing. Ralph Temple is a Chartered Life Underwriter with over forty years of experience in the area of member health and life insurance programs. He currently provides advisory services especially for retirees and baby boomers. Sharon Whitehill, Ph.D., earned her doctoral degree in Victorian literature before spending more than 30 years as a professor of English. Thomas Williams is an alumnus of FGCU, graduating in 2003 with a Master of Science Degree. He is a veteran of two wars, and has written five historical novels.
