Donatello: Master Sculptor of Florence

$20 / $25

TR7956 – The Terraces (Bonita Springs) – June 15 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday Donatello was one of the greatest Florentine sculptors of the early Renaissance. His work truly embodies the principles of Renaissance humanism with figures who are definite individuals in contrast to late medieval art with its far more stylized and generalized figures. Controversies surrounding the death of this 36 year old icon, on the eve of remarrying the one man who truly loved her, Joe DiMaggio, have not gone away, nor has the mystique and mystery of her troubled life. Even her birth presents a mystery; her father unknown, she was abandoned to a life of abuse and foster homes. Hollywood stardom would be closely tied to the Rat Pack, Kennedys, and sadly, drugs. How did she like playing the ditzy blond? We’ll unwrap some of the mysteries but not all. Legends, too, need to keep some secrets. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Instructor: Steven Mutart

John Wayne, The Duke

$20 / $25

NC7969 – Naples Center – June 10 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Friday Nicknamed after his Airedale, “Duke,” Marion Robert Morrison went from handsome stage hand to international superstar and American icon John Wayne over five decades, finally winning his first Academy Award for True Grit in 1969. A bigger than life character, he drank and swaggered for decades with pals like John Ford and John Huston. Stagecoach, Rio Bravo, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The High and Mighty, and The Shootist, film number 170, were some of his achievements. This great actor may be gone, but not forgotten.

Humphrey Bogart (Bogie): One of a Kind

$20 / $25

NC7970 – Naples Center – June 17 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Friday His first and only Academy Award came in 1951 for the grumpy, boozy, skipper of the tug boat “African Queen,” capping thirty years of stage and film. But boat captain Charlie Allnut was just one of the many iconic roles immortalized by this complex and unique talent. Booze, John Huston, the Rat Pack, and Lauren Bacall were all part of his colorful life much like his roles on screen. Dead at 57, his legend lives on in Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, and dozens of other classics.

Joe DiMaggio

$20 / $25

NC7972 – Naples Center – July 14 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday Son of an Italian immigrant fisherman, young Giuseppe (Joe) set the all-time hitting streak of 56 consecutive games in 1941, which is the Mt. Everest of batting and not expected to ever be broken. His 13 years as the Yankee’s center fielder with nine World Series championships is the stuff of legend. Did we mention his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, their very public on-and-off relationship, and her mysterious death? Learn new details about this sometimes prickly, enigmatic, uniquely talented, and ever fascinating, larger-than-life icon.

Babe Ruth

$20 / $25

NC7973 – Naples Center – July 21 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday In an age where the words “legend” and “icon” are often overused, no vocabulary exists to describe George Herman “Babe” Ruth’s enormous and electrifying effect on the public image of baseball. His interests were not limited to baseball, as booze and women were also part of his very open and larger-than-life story: seven World Series championships, “Murderer’s Row,” 714 homeruns, and records that are still unbroken today. The Babe truly was one-of-a-kind.

Mickey Mantle

$20 / $25

NC7974 – Naples Center – August 11 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday What pressure did the young boy from Oklahoma feel when he was handed his #6 Yankees uniform in 1951 following greats like #3 (Ruth), #4 (Gehrig), and #5 (DiMaggio)? By the end of his rookie season, he would change to #7 and enter the Hall of Fame two decades later. Not only did he emulate the Babe’s prodigious home runs but also matched his off-the-field drinking, womanizing, and partying with pals Whitey Ford and Billy Martin.

Willie Mays

$20 / $25

NC7975 – Naples Center – August 18 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday His 0 for 23 first at bats in 1951 did not bode well for the future Hall of Famer but the next at bat home run off another future Hall of Famer, Warren Spawn, began one of the most exciting and spectacular journeys in baseball history. Is Willie Howard Mays, Jr. the greatest all-around baseball player ever? Let’s discuss and debate. (And guess who was in the on-deck circle when Bobby Thomson’s shot was heard around the world?)’ Baseball fans of the 40s, 50s, and 60s don’t want to miss this one.

Join us as we look back at their lives, stats, and remarkable careers that truly were “the stuff of legend.” Instructor: Steven Mutart

Koufax the Colossal

$20 / $25

BR7977 – Brooks Commons Club – August 9 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Tuesday Describing a Koufax pitch, the batter offered advice to the next hitter: “You can’t see the ball; you just have to go by the sound.” Later, sadly, Sanford “Sandy” Koufax, a Jewish boy from Brooklyn, retired at 30. His left arm, the envy of every schoolboy and the bane of every major league hitter, was shot and a career that many considered the greatest ever by a left-handed pitcher was over. We will cover the highlights and the quiet, private moments of this humble man.

Ted Williams is still revered today, more than 55 years after his retirement in 1960.

Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis

$40 / $47

NC7947 – Naples Center – March 17 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday Norman Lewis (1909–1979) was a pivotal figure in American art, a participant in the Harlem art community, an innovative contributor to abstract expressionism, and a politically-conscious activist. He was also an African American artist whose work engages deeply with modernist trends at a time when that aesthetic choice presented particular tensions in his professional career. This lecture will focus on Norman Lewis’s life, body of work, and the heart of his artistic practice from the early 1930s through the late 1970s. The “procession” in the exhibition’s title evokes Lewis’s evolving painterly process and highlights a prominent thread that runs through his oeuvre: the procession ritual. Processions were both celebratory and terrifying for Lewis, equally carrying allusions to Carnivale and Ku Klux Klan marches. In discussing Procession, this lecture will consider how Lewis integrated social issues of the 20 th century with abstraction and will highlight the surprising and expressive palette the artist championed throughout his career. Instructor: Monica Zimmerman, Director of Museum Education, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

After the Camera: Remaking Reality & the Make-Believe in Our Post-Internet Age $40 / $47 NC7948 – Naples Center – April 7 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday Over the past two decades the photographic image has seen a tremendous transformation due in no small part to the use of computers by artists in the service of their art. Today’s computer software enables the manipulation and even fabrication of realistic images. This raises the age-old question: What is photographic veracity? While posing an equally important, but more contemporary one: What is photography? In this digital age how do we comprehend the shift of the photograph from a realistic image packed with authenticity to a hyper-realistic image that is short on truth? Instructor: Charles Stainback, Director, Philip & Muriel Berman Museum of Art, Ursinus College.

Saluting Our Veterans: The Story of Collier County Honor Flight

FREE

Honor Flight strives to show these soldiers their monuments while treating them to the highest degree of honor, respect and gratitude they so richly deserve. Join us as we discuss why Honor Flight came to be, how they operate and who they serve. Collier County Honor Flight was established on September 25th, 2013 to bring this program to the Collier County area. A very successful inaugural flight took place on November 9th, 2013, just six weeks after forming. Prior to the Honor Flight Network, many veterans had given up all hope of ever seeing the World War II Memorial. Now they have hope, and this is our very small way of saying, “thank you.” Program presented by Collier County Honor Flight board member.

American Presidents in Hard Economic Times: Lessons for Today?

$30 / $35

NC8086 – Naples Center – July 13, 20 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Wednesdays Participants may register for the entire series (NC8086) or for any of the individual lectures below. From Revolutionary War days, when Washington was struggling to pay his troops, to Obama’s inherited wars and massive deficits, booms and busts have been part of the American economic fabric. Many 19th century presidents confronted depressions, but believed the business cycle of boom or bust was strictly a business affair. Causes of the depressions and how each affected the sitting president and his people will be explored. What do these economic disruptions have in common with the situation today? American Presidents in Hard Times: 1776 – 1929

$20 / $25

NC8087 – Naples Center – July 13 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Wednesday Congress had no power to tax as the Revolutionary War wore on. So desperate was the situation that George Washington went out of pocket to pay his troops. One hundred and fifty years later, after a half dozen or so significant economic booms and busts, Herbert Hoover was faced with a financial collapse of almost Biblical proportions. Some said this was proof of the failure of capitalism and, by extension, the American way of life. We will explore the surprisingly similar causes of the panics of the 19th century and how they affected the sitting president and the country; and what, if any, effort was made to prevent them in the future, and if the root causes still exist today.

American Presidents in Hard Times: 1930 – Today

$20 / $25

NC8088 – Naples Center – July 20 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Wednesday Despite President Hoover’s best efforts, in 1933 President Roosevelt inherited an economic collapse that only got worse as continuing bank failures and mounting unemployment sank the nation to new depths. Unprecedented governmental action, WWII, and a revival of the natural business cycle saw prosperity return. The rest of the century saw its share of boom and bust, but nothing close to the depressed times of the 1930’s, that is until the so-called Great Recession of 2008. What comparisons can be made between these economic events and the reactions of the various presidents in office at the time?

The History & Stories Behind the Hymns

$20 / $25

MP8097 – Moorings Park (Naples) – August 10 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday Hymns have long been a part of church services. They were born out of the need to teach theology. Join Dr. Cindy Gomez as she shares the evolution of the hymn and the stories behind some of our favorites. You might even recognize a song or two. Instructor: Cindy Gomez

Henry VIII and the Tudors

$20 / $25

Option #1 – TR8098 – The Terraces (Bonita Springs) – August 17 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday Option #2 – AR8099 – The Arlington (Naples) – September 20 at 1pm – 2:30pm, Tuesday Choose one of the course options above. On the death of King Henry’s daughter, Elizabeth, after her 45 year rule, the Tudor dynasty came to the end of its 120 year run, followed by 100 years of Stuarts. King Henry VIII’s almost 40 year firm rule changed forever England’s history, culture, and religion and introduced the divine power of kings to his countrymen after telling the Pope to go to hell. Barely 18, in 1509 Henry took the reins from his deceased father, Henry VII, married the widow of his brother, Arthur, then Anne Boleyn, then—well, four more, while waging war in France, Italy, and Scotland, separating the church from Rome, and finally producing a male heir, Edward, who would become king at the ripe age of nine. Did we mention two of the wives were executed and Edward died at 15? Instructor: Steven Mutart

Five Best and Worst U.S. Presidents

$20 / $25

MP8100 – Moorings Park (Naples) – September 12 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday Like naming the greatest baseball player or actor, selecting the best or worst President is a very subjective business, but over many decades and dozens of surveys, a consensus of the top and bottom 5 can reasonably be made. Selecting the criteria to make the choice is almost as subjective as the final selections themselves. We won’t let the cat out of the bag so come to our meeting and talk to learn and weigh in on this fun session. This is far less controversial than the new leader we are choosing this fall! Instructor: Steven Mutart

Jonathan Pollard: Avarice or Ideology?

$20 / $25

Option #1 – AR8101 – The Arlington (Naples) – September 13 at 1pm – 2:30pm, Tuesday Option #2 – TR8102 – The Terraces (Bonita Springs) – September 20 at 10am – 11:30am, Tuesday Choose one of the course options above. Pollard, a U.S. intelligence analyst, was arrested while spying for Israel. Israel refused him asylum and then denied knowledge of his spying. For years, they have sought his release. Despite a life sentence, he was eligible for parole in November 2015 and was ultimately released. We will address the facts behind this highly debated and political case. Was he motivated by love for Israel and its security, or was his aim more sinister – greed? Also, did he spy only for Israel? Additionally, we will discuss other Mossad operations (Eichmann, the Hangman of Riga, other assassinations) and Israeli intelligence organizations. $20 / $25

NC8104 – Naples Center – September 14 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Wednesday The world was about to change on Sunday, May 13, 1787, when George Washington stepped off the ferry in Philadelphia, the day before the Constitutional Convention. For 120 sweltering days, Washington presided over 55 fractious delegates from 12 equally fractious states (Rhode Island did not send delegates) who argued, fought, cajoled, and ultimately compromised in drafting a blueprint for a new nation and one of the most significant documents in history. The ratification process was to be yet another story.

The New Nation Struggles (1790 – 1800)

$20 / $25

NC8105 – Naples Center – September 21 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Wednesday Our new country was finally official; the Constitution was ratified by 12 of the 13 previously independent colonies, but more daunting tasks lay ahead. Jefferson and Adams were ready to join Hamilton, Madison, and other leaders in helping put the nation on its feet and preparing it for a dangerous and unfriendly world. However, the Founding Fathers found it difficult. Friendships turned to enmity; petty jealousies and genuine differences made for a very unhappy team of superstars. Our leaders today could learn much from these powerful, passionate, and brilliant men who saw the world very differently from one another but ultimately compromised for the greater good of the country.

The Miracle Continues (1800 – 1820)

The nation’s first financial panic takes place during Monroe’s administration.

She traces social and political events that led to Woodstock, the music inspired by those events, and how those songs, in turn, inspired the movements. Our instructor will narrate her photographs with songs that will take us back, provide perspective, and challenge us to continue to change the world. Instructor: Carlene Thissen

$20 / $25

AT8108 – Atrium (Ft Myers) – September 14 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday In 2010, the FBI arrested 10 long-term Russian spies. They had posed as Americans for years developing intelligence sources. Within days, these spies pled guilty and were swapped for Western assets held in Russian prisons. We will examine what they did, how they were caught, and the prisoner exchange. Most Americans only read the headlines, but we will discuss the fascinating details. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood

MUSIC Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Outer Limits of Genius

$20 / $25

BR8113 – Brooks Commons Club – June 16 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday What does a five year old do with the rest of his life after mastering violin and piano? Mozart would go on to compose 41 symphonies, 27 piano concertos, five violin concertos (by age 18), many operas, countless small concert pieces, and hundreds of live performances for royalty throughout Europe. But the musical darling of Europe would die penniless and join the paupers in their graves at the young age of 35. Adored by millions, he would become a hero to the many musical giants that followed him. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Beethoven’s Ninth: The Struggle, Despair and Triumph

$20 / $25

BR8114 – Brooks Commons Club – September 22 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday Famed conductor Riccardo Muti said when he picks up the baton to conduct Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony he feels a chill knowing he will be in direct communication with God for the next ninety minutes. Join us as we “listen and learn” about this titan whose powerful sound cast an enormous shadow across the 19th century. “Papa” Hayden called his pupil a child prodigy whose music “will one day shake this earth.” While battling hearing loss in his thirties, fighting his sister-in-law over custody of his nephew, and suffering the lost love of the mysterious “Immortal Beloved,” Beethoven created some of the greatest music ever, crowned by the monumental Ninth Symphony. Afraid to touch a button or worse yet, touch one by accident and can’t undo what you have just done? Do not be embarrassed! Gain control of your digital camera in this easy-to-understand class. In this lecture-style class, you will learn what all those buttons do, when to use them, how to use them, and why to use them. Ansel Adams said, “You don’t take a photograph, you make a photograph.” Photography is a very subjective endeavor. There are no hard-and-fast rules to follow that always assure your picture will be, well, “picture perfect.” However, an understanding of light, exposure, and compositional guidelines that can be applied to virtually any scene will enhance its impact and quality. Understanding these principles will help you to capture more compelling images, turning your snapshots into works of art. This class would be for all photographers, regardless of the camera they use. We all love to travel, and capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments to share with friends and family, or for personal memories, is part of the experience. Our photographs need to bring the sensations of sight, sound, and smell back to trigger our memories and to communicate how we felt to others. To do this, we need to think and feel, as much as look, when setting out to take photographs. Travel photography expresses the feeling of a time and place, portrays a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state, and has no geographical limitations. Learn how to create the images that are only seen in magazines. Instructor: Frank Berna Register online at http://RegisterRA.fgcu.edu or call 239-425-3272 / 239-434-4737
