Demystifying Modern China

$34 / $39

NC3681 – Naples Center – January 8 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours A newly emerging world power, China has undergone epic changes during the late 19th and 20th centuries. In the span of less than 200 years, it has witnessed colonial incursions by multiple Western powers; the demise of an imperial system more than 2,000 years old; a period of widespread political and social fragmentation; a debilitating war against Japan; a communist revolution that dwarfed the Russian revolution in size; and a tumultuous period of communist rule that has itself fluctuated between periods of chaos and those of unprecedented economic growth. Now, with its unique synthesis of communist government and capitalist economics, China is emerging as an undisputed world power. In this lecture, Dr. Mullaney charts the major historical transformations that have shaped China over the past two centuries. Instructor: Dr. Thomas Mullaney, Stanford University

Transformation of Tradition

$34 / $39

NC3682 – Naples Center – January 15 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours At the dawn of China’s Republican era in the 1910s, modernizers proposed reviving their country’s national power and international reputation by adopting Western technology and political structures. As part of that effort, they demanded that Chinese art be reformed in similarly Westernizing ways. Soon they were countered by artists who sought to demonstrate that innovation did not require rejection of China’s own artistic language. This lecture will trace how the forces of internationalization and tradition have pushed and pulled Chinese art over the course of twentieth century, culminating with recent developments, when the success of globally oriented artists in the West has paradoxically stimulated a revival of traditional themes and materials at home. Instructor: Dr. Julia Andrews, Ohio State University

Architectural Transformations of China During the 20th Century

$34 / $39

NC3683 – Naples Center – January 22 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours The years from 1900 to 1978 were dark ones indeed with all of China “mired in the bog of existing, sustaining itself for another year, another month, another day.” Then the famous 1978 billboard appeared – riders on horses with manes flying, proclaiming, “We will take advantage of every minute, every second to race to the year 2000!” Warfield stated, “The plans that were explained to me were to reinvent Shanghai. It would be…the ‘head of the dragon,’ the new financial center of the East—and an architectural wonder to rival cities of the West. The first physical sign of metamorphosis was already in place, the elegant, new, first bridge across the Huangpu…” Instructor: Dr. James P Warfield, University of Illinois

From Mountain Songs to Symphony: The Role of Music in Chinese Cinema

$34 / $39

NC3684 – Naples Center – January 29 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours In Chinese cinema, musical melody and lyrics have often played a role that comes right out of ancient classical traditions and might be compared to the Greek chorus: it not only shapes the mood of the audience with melody but guides their understanding with instructive lyrics at critical moments of the film. This lecture will discuss examples of Chinese film music, how it has worked and how it has changed over the decades and in recent years, illustrated with film clips from the 1930s to the 21st century. Instructor: Dr. Jerome Silbergeld, Princeton University

Chinese Film Presentation & New Year Luncheon (luncheon is an additional fee) $8 / $10 NC3685 – Naples Center – February 5 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours

Feast and Famine – Foodways in China

$34 / $39

NC3686 – Naples Center – February 12 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours “The Chinese have probably fed more people, more successfully, than any other culture in world history. How they developed the cultural capital to do this is well worth our study.” This statement by David Keightley, Professor emeritus of Chinese History at Berkeley, refers to the remarkable characteristics that shaped the food culture of China over thousands of years. This presentation will investigate aspects of the rich cultural ways in which food is celebrated in China. In this chronologically structured journey through China’s food culture we will begin our exploration with the early beginnings of food offerings to the ancestors and end with Lu Wenfu’s novel ‘The Gourmet,’ which in fine irony tells the story of a glutton and his tactics to survive the political campaigns of the twentieth century in China. Instructor: Dr. Ina Asim, University of Oregon

The Meaning of Religion in Modern China

$34 / $39

NC3687 – Naples Center – February 19 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours Connoisseurs of Buddhist and Daoist art and visitors to the lively temples of Chinese communities around the world can testify alike to the depth of Chinese religious life. So how did it come to pass that the 19th century’s preeminent intellectual, Kang Youwei, complained bitterly, and with reason, that Westerners claimed that China had no religion? We will discuss the impact of a global, modern view of “religion” that excluded many of the everyday devotions and well-developed institutions found in Chinese society. Ironically, it has also enabled a succession of governments to

claim to honor “freedom of religion” while attacking or curtailing various aspects of that religiosity. Throughout the twentieth century and to today, however, we can also find numerous examples of individuals and communities in the Chinese world engaging with modern public life through religion. These show that the dominant model in the West of “church and state,” “secular,” and “religious,” need not be the only way of understanding the relationship of religion and the public. Instructor: Dr. Rebecca Nedostup, Brown University

Some were saying this was proof of the failure of capitalism and by extension the American way of life.
