Care quality is wavering, medical innovation is threatened, businesses are dropping coverage and insurance premiums are increasing. In this talk, Basu will discuss why and what is really needed to fix it. Instructor: Ms. Rituparna Basu

Early Southeast Asia and its Global Interactions
$34 / $39
NC4586 – Naples Center – January 14 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours Southeast Asia is a region at the crossroads, halfway between India and China. The Hindu-Buddhist artistic tradition in Southeast Asia drew its concepts and imagery overwhelmingly from Indian sources. The styles used to give expression to them are, however, multitudinous and little understood. Beyond these Indian derivations is a powerful indigenous aesthetic which generated Southeast Asian styles of religious art which are amongst the most gracious and dignified in the early cultures of Asia. The purity of image and message suggests the artists who produced these works of art did so in direct response to the power and majesty of the Hindu deities, and to the humanist values embedded in the Buddha’s message. Instructor: Dr. John Guy, New York Metropolitan Museum
Flowers Beneath the Snow: Chinese Influences in Japanese Art
$34 / $39
NC4587 – Naples Center – January 21 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours Japanese art and culture experienced influences from continental China throughout its rich history. Buddhism, a dominant religion in Asia, shaped Japan’s formative years during the 6th-8th centuries, providing new perspectives on life and death as well as serving as a political, unifying force within the country. Later, the Chan sect of Buddhism, introduced from China during the 12th -13th centuries, is known throughout the world as Zen Buddhism because of its strong identifying associations with Japan’s dynamic warrior culture. In addition, the Confucian philosophy contributed the respect for scholarship and the cultured gentleman. Once introduced, however, these foreign influences were integrated into existing fertile traditions and inspired new artistic and cultural expressions. Chinese influences, like flowers beneath the snow, experienced rebirth and transformation into the Japanese artistic seasons shaped by time and place. Instructor: Dr. Marjorie Williams, The Cleveland Museum of Art
When China and Persia Meet
$34 / $39
NC4588 – Naples Center – January 28 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours This lecture explores key moments when the art and architectural systems of China and Persia came together. We focus on four sets of monuments to address the subject: I. Unusual motifs in the rock-carved Xiangtangshan cave-temples in southern Hebei. II. Sino-Persian painting of the 13th - 15th century. III. The Observatory near Dengfeng, Henan province. IV. Mosques built in China during the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. Instructor: Dr. Nancy Steinhardt, University of Pennsylvania
Viet Nam and China: Assimilation and Difference
$34 / $39
NC4589 – Naples Center – February 4 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours From the 2nd century BCE, the Han Chinese exerted influence over the closely related peoples of Southeastern China and Viet Nam. In the arts, the earliest evidence of their influence appears in the bronze and ceramic grave goods of the Giao Chi period, goods that include both indigenous Dong Son related objects and Chinese influenced works. From this early period to the

present, the Vietnamese ability to assimilate, then assert their own taste, culture, and values is apparent. During the thousand years of Chinese influence, the Vietnamese adopted Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Yet, a look at goddess worship and the practice of the Cao Dai religion exemplify links with China, while demonstrating the unique quality of Vietnamese art and belief. The Influence of European Culture on China – The Jesuits
$34 / $39
NC4591 – Naples Center – February 18 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours The Jesuits arrived in China in the late 16th century with a mission of spreading religion. Instead, their greatest influence on Chinese culture came from their sharing scientific perspectives and artistic techniques that offered new visual delights in the realms of Chinese art and architecture. This lecture will discuss how the interests of each of three Chinese rulers -- the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors -- resulted in distinctly different relationships and interactions with the Jesuits and subsequent influences on different aspects of Chinese culture. Instructor: Dr. Nancy Berliner, Wu Tung Curator of Chinese Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts
Adoption, Assimilation, Transformation: Korean Art & Its Relationship to Chinese Art
$34 / $39
NC4592 – Naples Center – February 25 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours This lecture is an overview of traditional Korean art from its early, formative phase in the late Three Kingdoms period (57 BC–AD 668) to its maturation in the Unified Silla (668–935) and Goryeo (918–1392) periods and through its flowering during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). The presentation will explore ceramics, Buddhist sculpture and painting, and secular painting. Korean art drew inspiration from Chinese art. Once they had fully mastered Chinese styles, aesthetics, and techniques, Korean artists typically transformed the subjects, formats, and styles adopted from China to meet their own aesthetic needs, thereby establishing distinctive Korean styles that reflect their Chinese origins but stand apart from them. Instructor: Dr. Robert Mowry, Harvard University
Back and Forth, Now Meeting in the Middle: The Complex Interplay between Western Contemporary Art and Chinese Art
$34 / $39
NC4593 – Naples Center – March 4 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours In the 1950s, Socialist Realism—an import from the Soviet Union—became the dominant mode of painting in China. Ironically, around this time, American painters were absorbing Chinese Daoist and Chan Buddhist notions and incorporating them into their art. This is particularly notable in the case of the Abstract Expressionists, sponsored by the CIA as a soft power play against the East. Following the death of Chairman Mao in 1976, China gradually opened up to the West, and in the 1980s and 90s, Chinese artists eagerly devoured information on Western art movements from the early twentieth century on. This resulted in a surge of works of art that superficially resembled Western art ranging all the way from Impressionism to Pop, but often bearing vastly different meanings. A second wave of influence gave rise to the more international modes of installation, video, and performance art. This lecture will examine the tides of art back and forth between China and the West. Instructor: Dr. Britta Erickson, Independent Scholar

Has America been progressing toward the crushing pain of social turmoil and economic collapse? America has become, in this 21st century, a society of mega business, mega politics, mega government programs, mega institutions and mega doubt that these can be sustained through to mid-century; the era of our children and grandchildren. Join the lively discussion of the loss of common sense in America. Moderator: Dr. William Dietzel
Meeting an Unforgettable Woman in Paradise
$20 / $25
NC4756 – Naples Center – October 29 at 10am – 11:30am, Tuesday – 1.5 hours Over the past two years, as I bought my morning newspaper and latte at Starbucks, a middle aged woman cheerfully got my coffee. She was efficient, unflappable and quick with brief repartee. As the months trudged along, she revealed several important, and very unusual parts of her life. One of the major aspects was that a film about her and her unusual profession/life was to be a major part of an hour on prime time television. My promise to her was that I wouldn’t reveal anything about her until the television event. However, by the time I present this lecture, her film will have been on TV and she will no longer be among us. Moderator: Dr. Morris Shepard

Three books on the subject populate the New York Times Nonfiction Best Seller List. Thousands of people have had near death experiences but scientists have argued that they are impossible. NC4818 – Naples Center – November 6 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday – 1.5 hours Our new country was finally official: the Constitution was ratified by 12 of the 13 previously independent colonies but more daunting tasks lay ahead. Jefferson and Adams were ready to join Hamilton, Madison, and other leaders in helping put the nation on its feet and prepare to live in a dangerous world. But the Founding Fathers found it difficult. Friendships turned to enmity; petty jealousies and genuine differences made a very unhappy team of super stars. Our leaders today could learn much from these powerful, passionate, and brilliant men who saw the world very differently from one another but ultimately compromised for the greater good of the country.

Many 19th century Presidents confronted depressions, but believed the business cycle of boom or bust was strictly a business affair. Causes of the depressions and how each affected the sitting President and his people will be explored. What do these economic disruptions have in common with the situation today? Instructor: Mr. Steven Mutart
American Presidents: 1776 – 1929

So desperate was the situation that George Washington went out of pocket to pay his troops. One hundred fifty years later, after a half dozen or so significant economic booms and busts, Herbert Hoover was faced with a financial collapse of almost Biblical proportions. Some said this was proof of the failure of capitalism and by extension the American way of life. We’ll explore the surprisingly similar causes of the Panics of the 19th century and how they affected the sitting President and the country; and what, if any, effort was made to prevent them in the future, and if the root causes still exist today.
American Presidents: 1930 – Today

What comparisons can be made between these economic events and the reactions of the various Presidents in office at the time?

Voyage to Sicily: A Journey of Discovery
From $3,895 (Land Only)
SP4875 – May 7 – May 18, 2014 – 12 days “To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not having seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the key to everything.” Sicily - theatre of lights and winds, of epic battles and sublime architecture; the southernmost bridge to Africa; and indulgent cradle for different civilizations. The sun kisses the blazing sands and the low cliffs; the sky is tinged with strong colors, especially at sunset; the sandy, golden beaches dance with the bright, blue sea; silver olive trees mix together with palms; everything invites you to enjoy life, experience nature and revel in a rich and extraordinarily diverse past. Lying as it does between Europe and Africa, Sicily, the oft-called “melting pot of the ancient world,” has been touched, changed and marked by a myriad of cultures - first the Greeks and the Romans, then the Arabs and Normans, and finally, the French, Spanish and Italians, all of them contributing to an unparalleled historical legacy. Nature and history have combined to give Sicily its most striking feature: impressive monuments of the past set against backgrounds of astonishing natural beauty. On this excursion, the treasures of Palermo, Erice, Cefalú, Monreale, Selinunte, Taormina, Modica, Ragusa Ilba, Noto, Catania and Syracusa will all be explored.
